Perceptions of the Mediterranean have long been shaped by European perspectives. It has been seen as an idyllic space of civilization, of exchange and mobility. This view is rooted in re-translations of the Roman mare nostrum, in nostalgic visions of nineteenth and early twentieth-century colonial cosmopolitanism, and in modern practices of tourism

It is connected to the tradition, religion, art as well as the social and economic life of the inhabitants ever since civilization started leaving its mark on the island. Today, olive orchards constitute one of the most dominant elements in the natural environment of the island, covering 65% of the farming land, and offer employment to almost the majority of its farming families. Oliviculture together with tourism make up two of the most important economic resources in Crete. It offers a significant income to the island and constitutes an interesting and cherished activity to a large part of its inhabitants. The aim of this study was to identify the problems, to come up with ways to take advantage of new possibilities-opportunities and to apply modern proposals – trends in the field of oliviculture. The main topics of this study are: • Identification and study of oliviculture systems.

The Distribution Of Obsidian In The Eastern Mediterranean As Indication Of Early Seafaring Practices In The Area A Thesis By Niki Chartzoulaki Maritime Archaeology Programme University of Southern Denmark MASTER OF ARTS November 2013 1 Στον Γιώργο 2 Acknowledgments This paper represents the official completion of a circle, I hope successfully, definitely constructively. The writing of a Master Thesis turned out that there is not an easy task at all. Right from the beginning with the effort to find the appropriate topic for your thesis until the completion stage and the time of delivery, you got to manage with multiple issues regarding the integrated presentation of your topic while all the time and until the last minute you are constantly wondering if you handled correctly and whether you should have done this or not to do it the other. So, I hope this Master this to fulfill the requirements of the topic as best as possible. I am grateful to my Supervisor Professor, Thijs Maarleveld who directed me and advised me during the writing of this Master Thesis. His help, his support and his invaluable insight throughout the entire process were valuable parameters for the completion of this paper. I would like to thank my Professor from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Nikolaos Efstratiou who help me to find this topic and for his general help. Also the Professor of University of Crete, Katerina Kopaka, who she willingly provide me with all of her publications –and those that were not yet have been published- regarding her research in the island of Gavdos.

However, this thesis, like any other one, would not have become reality without the contribution of a number of individuals and institutions. First of all of my academical mother, Leslie Brubaker, whose constant support, guidance and encouragement accompanied me through all the years of research. Of the National Scholarship Foundation of Greece ( I.K.Y.) with its financial help for the greatest part of my postgraduate studies. Of my father George, my mother Angeliki and my bother Nick for their psychological and financial support, and of my friends in Greece (Lily Athanatou, Maria Sourlatzi, Kanela Oikonomaki, Maria Lemoni) for being by my side in all my years of absence. Special thanks should also be addressed to Mary Cunningham for her comments on an early draft of this thesis and for providing me with unpublished material of her work. I would like also to express my gratitude to Marka Tomic Djuric who allowed me to use unpublished photographic material from her doctoral thesis. Special thanks should also be addressed to Kanela Oikonomaki whose expertise in Medieval Greek smoothened the translation of a number of texts, my brother Nick Panou for polishing my English, and to my colleagues (Polyvios Konis, Frouke Schrijver and Vera Andriopoulou) and my friends in Birmingham (especially Jane Myhre Trejo and Ola Pawlik) for the wonderful time we have had all these years.

It’s only a “stone throw” away from Rethymno. Our problems are the already known bad signs together with the “incompe- tence” to read and understand the signs in time while driving through the turbulent city of Rethymno. Therefore, as already several times before, we take the wrong branch und find ourselves short time after in a village named Anogeia (B at the map – see right). So, stop the car at the roadside, unpack the map and search. No drama – “there’s more than one way to skin a cat” – also this route is leading towards Myli (see map). Coming from Roussospiti, short before Myli, we see a relatively new and large sign at the intersection (no [bullet]holes, no dents and the colour seams to be fresh and new) pointing to a Military Museum in Chro- monastiri.

  • ERT Pollution Monitoring in Areas of Olive Oil Mills' Wastes (OOMW): Preliminary Results from a Disposal Site in Crete (Greece)
©Geol. Bundesanstalt, Wien; download unter www.geologie.ac.at Berichte Geol. B.-A., 93, ISSN 1017‐8880 – Poster and Company Presentations ERT pollution monitoring in areas of olive oil mills' wastes (OOMW): Preliminary results from a disposal site in Crete (Greece) 1 1 NIKOS PAPADOPOULOS and STEFANOS CHATZIATHANASIOU 1 Laboratory of Geophysical – Satellite Remote Sensing & Archaeo-environment, Institute for Mediterranean Studies, Foundation for Research & Technology, Hellas (F.O.R.T.H.), Rethymno 74100, Crete, Greece. [email protected] Introduction and Problem Statement The Mediterranean region accounts for no less than 97% of the world's olive oil production due to the favourable climatic conditions. Especially, Greece holds the third place worldwide in olive oil production and the island of Crete contributes approximately 5% to the total world olive oil production. The production procedure of olive oil generates large volumes of Olive Oil Mill Wastes (OOMW) with high organic load and rich in-inorganic constituents which lead to pollution of soil and water resources and therefore environmental degradation The OOMW are usually disposed in evaporation ponds which are rarely of proper size and wastewaters often overflow affecting neighbouring systems (soil, surface and groundwater) and other professional activities of the residents (agriculture, livestock farming). The base of the ponds is permeable and thus, the probability for groundwater and deep soil contamination is high. Consequently long-term disposal of waste, without necessary monitoring and protective measures may cause changes in the physico-chemical parameters of the surrounding ecosystems, with the risk of future non-tissue degradation of the environment. Moreover, older waste sites often lack reliable geological or artificial barriers and depositional information, to minimize the possibilities of further environmental damages.
