Perceptions of the Mediterranean have long been shaped by European perspectives. It has been seen as an idyllic space of civilization, of exchange and mobility. This view is rooted in re-translations of the Roman mare nostrum, in nostalgic visions of nineteenth and early twentieth-century colonial cosmopolitanism, and in modern practices of tourism

It is connected to the tradition, religion, art as well as the social and economic life of the inhabitants ever since civilization started leaving its mark on the island. Today, olive orchards constitute one of the most dominant elements in the natural environment of the island, covering 65% of the farming land, and offer employment to almost the majority of its farming families. Oliviculture together with tourism make up two of the most important economic resources in Crete. It offers a significant income to the island and constitutes an interesting and cherished activity to a large part of its inhabitants. The aim of this study was to identify the problems, to come up with ways to take advantage of new possibilities-opportunities and to apply modern proposals – trends in the field of oliviculture. The main topics of this study are: • Identification and study of oliviculture systems.

  • Alternative Spatial Arrangement of Small-Sized Municipal Solid Waste Bins
ALTERNATIVE SPATIAL ARRANGEMENT OF SMALL-SIZED MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE BINS I. KARAGIANNAKI, E. GIDARAKOS SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING, TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF CRETE, POLITECHNIOUPOLIS 73100 CHANIA, GREECE SUMMARY: Solid waste management stategy that every cosiety adopts is of the utmost meaning. The object of this study was to evaluate quantitative and qualitative the existing solid waste management of survey area, which is Old Harbor of Chania, Crete. In terms of quantity, the max total capacity of small-sized solid waste bins adequates to cover the demands of study area's visitors. Unfortunately, in terms of quality, it has been observed many points devastate the ergonomy and safety of urban surroundings. So, without changes in operating cost, two different scenarios of alternative spacial arrangement of small-sized municipal solid waste bins were designed, compling with principles of Neüfert (Ernst Neüfert, 2003). According to results, both of scenarios improve the servicing level of area, in comparison with the existing situation. However, in first scenario it ιs observed bigger dispersion of bins not only in central roads but in these with medium traffic too. 1. INTRODUCTION Increasing evolution of society affect and definately will continue to influence the prodused solid wastes not only quantitatively but also qualitatively (Liolios, G.2014). However, countries has adopted different solid wastes management strategies to maintain the high standarts of public hygiene. The basic stages of a solid waste management system are waste generation, waste disposal, collection, transport, treatment, recovery and disposal in landfills (Rada, E. Et al.2013). • Chapter 3 Canea and Suda1
3: CANEA AND SUDA CHAPTER 3 CANEA AND SUDA1 Foundation of Canea Canea was founded by the Venetians to keep the Greeks in subjection in the middle of the 13th century. Pashley quotes an interesting passage recording this from the entry for the year 1252 from a manuscript Cronaca Veneziana:i “The Greeks of the island of Candia have always been badly disposed towards the Venetian Government, not content to dwell under it. With this knowledge the Venetian Government planned to found a city between Candia and Retimo2 and in this way the site of Canea was made a city, and many men of noble birth were sent to dwell there on the terms on which the rest of the men of noble birth were sent to Candia.” The error of the chronicler as to the position of Canea is curious. Canea Siege Canea is still surrounded to some extent by its Venetian fortifications, though the gates have disappeared since the Turk left and especially on the south the wall has been sadly diminished and is still more threatened. Their historic charm is antipathetic to the Greek. The best stretch of walls is that to the west of the town, which is in general form an oblong, with the two short sides on the east and west, one long side to the north along the sea and the other to the south where the gate stood; this side has been much destroyed and on the site of a part of the wall a large market erected, doubtless more sanitary than the old bazaars, but of a painful ugliness.3 But it was these walls which sustained the siege of 1645 when the Turks took the town after attacking it for [60] days and thus got their first footing in the island, after the preliminary occupation of the island of Saint Theodore.
