Term 2 Week 7

PSW – Year 1 Term 2 Life Orientation Studying at home during COVID-19 Week: ______Name: ______Date: ______

After a few weeks away from the school and classroom, the national lockdown may start to feel like a holiday. But if you are a learner it is important to remember that the academic year is still ticking along.

The majority of schools have encouraged learners to continue studying at home, but this can get extremely hard for some, so here are some tips to help you study at home.

1. Tips for studying at home during the COVID-19 lockdown.

1.1. Get changed out of your pajamas

It will help you to get in the right headspace for working and studying throughout the day.

1.2. Create a morning routine

Take responsibility. Set yourself a daily schedule that includes studying, relaxing, spending time with family and some physical activity.

Even though your parents / guardians may also be at home, they shouldn’t have to remind you every day to do your work.

1.3. Don’t hesitate to ask for help, especially now.

Ask your parents, siblings, friends and teachers to support you.

Look around you and see whose talents or experience you can tap into. If your older brother is good at maths, ask him to help you for 30 minutes a day.

If you don’t have access to a laptop or mobile phone, ask a parent to allow you to use theirs for you study periods.

Remember if you ask people for help, prove to them that you are committed to doing well.

1.4. Team up with others

Studying at home can become really boring after a while. If you find that you have your motivation, join or create a study group on WhatsApp with your friends. Share links to helpful videos and share daily tips and new alerts.

REMEMBER that while study groups are great, they need rules. Keep them small enough to manage and ask people not to flood the group with jokes, songs and other things that can be distracting. Also agree on times, for example between 10h00 and 14h00, so that you don’t get messages all day and night.

Limit your social media and social use of devices. Schedule your time to be on social media with your friends outside your schoolwork hours

Don’t panic or lose heart if you cannot fully access the digital learning that has been provided so far on our Website kwaggasrand.co.za. Try to maintain a positive attitude as that will help you to be open for catching up with your work once we return to our school.

1.5. Take care of yourself

In order to study well you need to be well rested and have energy. Pay attention to your physical health by getting a good amount of sleep and exercise.

If you are worried about the COVID-19 pandemic and how it’s impacting your life, find ways to reduce anxiety such as exercising, skipping rope, dancing or talking to an adult you trust.

2

1.6. Have a dedicated study place

Ensure your place is quiet, organised and distraction free. If you have to work from your bedroom, try and make a space for sleeping and studying.

Look at some ideas on how to make a study place by using cardboard.
