Stamatoiu argues that in addition to the artistic sophistication of his work, Caragiale anticipated the impact of new media revolution and its forms as an imitation of "patho- logical situations" of public discourse and communication per se. Caragiale is, therefore, a writer of surprisingly up-to-date relevance today because, despite his air of the belle époque , in his gro- tesque farces and in his short stories we discover mental structures found in and characteristic of manipulations of and in the world of media in the time of Caragiale as well as today. These texts are also, as Stamatoiu argues, examples of ambitious ignorance which becomes public via journal- ism. In this study analyzed via examples from nineteenth-century newspapers and Caragiale's framework of thought, Stamatoiu highlights the systemic resemblances within a corrupted struc- ture of media communication animated in contemporary Romanian media. This char- acteristic of Caragiale's work is based in the evolution of Romanian literature in its European con- text. Owing to less than favourable circumstances of history, Romanian culture began to flourish after the 1848 revolutions in Europe and thus the founders of Romanian literature asserted them- selves by 1870. In a general way, one can say that their works represent a fusion between previ- ously opposing artistic movements in the West and their own Romanian versions and development of a national literature. Consequently, these "classics" were not classics proper, but romanticist texts with classical influences, such as those by the national poet Mihai Eminescu and realist texts such as by Ioan Slavici or Ion Creanga, or realist texts with classical and naturalist influences such as by Caragiale. These examples of four rivals and friends at the same time asserted themselves on their own but within the aesthetic environment created by the spiritual leader Titu Maiorescu around the "Junimea" ("The Youth") literary circle and his journal Convorbiri literare (Literary Con- versations). Maiorescu preached a Hegel-based aestheticism adapted to Romanian artistic and cul- tural conditions. According to the principles of l'art pour l'art , he also favored the gratuitousness of the artistic act while this did not prevent him from criticizing the production of form when without content from social life. He had the appearance of a liberal, but in practice he was, rather, a mild conservative who was determined to modernize Romania according to the European standards of the nineteenth century. In his vision, this process had to gain shape by means of a systematic as- similation of European values while maintaining the national traditions of Romania. This approach was in contradiction with those of his liberal contemporaries who were convinced that it was enough to formally implement democratic institutions thus to obtain authentic democracy almost automatically. As party leader, minister, prime minister, and political journalist, Maiorescu wanted to draw attention to the malfunction of modern Romanian institutions which in his opinion repre- sented a still flourishing feudalism. As a cultural personality, he managed to gather around him (relatively) young writers and intellectuals who would become the founders of modern Romanian literature. He also impacted with their writing with a sense of anti-urbanism, for example in the case of Creanga and Slavici), social criticism based on romantic notions such as in the case of Eminescu, or cruel ironical realism driven to the absurd such as in the case of Caragiale. Caragiale was born in 1852 at Haimanale, near the city of Ploiesti, in a family of Macedo- Romanian origin and a family whose paternal line was deeply involved in the emancipation of Ro- manian theatre. His father, Luca, an actor in his youth, and his uncles Costache and Iorgu, were actors, playwrights, and patrons of theatrical groups and contributed to the development of young Luca towards the world of theatre. Consequently, Caragiale attended rhetorical and miming cours- es taught by his uncle Costache at the Academy of Music in Bucharest in 1868-1870. Afterwards, he would make his debut as a literary and music critic while making a living among other things as the maître d' of a restaurant which of course provided him with excellent character studies for his later work and that allowed him to observe various social strata of the city involved in the process of modernization. Thanks to his restaurant experience, Caragiale was able to synthesize some of his most prominent protagonists in his wor such as that of Mitica: this popular diminutive for Mihai (Michael) would become an exponent for an entire class of good-for-nothing, superficial, and moody characters who added to the

    SLOVO, VOL. 31, NO. 2 (SUMMER 2018), 17-47 DOI: 10.14324/111.0954-6839.081 The Discourse on Humour in the Romanian Press between 1948-1965 EUGEN CONSTANTIN IGNAT University of Bucharest INTRODUCTION Once the official proclamation of the Romanian People’s Republic takes place, on the 30th of December 1947, the process of imposing new cultural values on society gradually permeates all areas of Romanian social life. Humour also becomes part of this process of transforming the social and cultural life, often regarded as a powerful weapon with which to attack ‘old’ bourgeois mentalities. According to Hans Speier, the official type of humour promoted by an authoritarian regime is political humour, which contributes to maintain the existent social order, or plays its part in changing it – all depending on those holding the reins over mass- media.1 Taking the Soviet Union as a model, the Romanian new regime imposes an official kind of humour, created through mass-media: the press, the radio, literature, cinematography, and television. This paper analyses the Romanian discourse on humour, reflected in the press, between 1948-1965,2 in cultural magazines3 such as Contemporanul (1948-1965), Probleme de 1 Hans Speier, ‘Wit and politics. Arthur Schopenhauer came into the world on February 22, 1788 in Danzig [Gdansk, Poland] in a Dutch family implied in international business trade both as a merchant and as a ship-owner. As a translator in Romanian of Arthur Schopenhauerřs work (1788-1866), Titu Maiorescu opened new knowledge tracks to the work of one of the most important thinkers of the time, whose philosophy, with an aesthetic perception of life, more musical and literary in the ability of expression and in the styles of understanding had been widely influential in the 20th century thinkers. Both scholars, Arthur Schopenhauer and Titu Maiorescu stated that the highest purpose of art is to communicate Platonic Ideas. The subject matter and stylistic arrangement of the Aphorisms were significant influences on the work of Titu Maiorescu whose later work exploresŕfollowing Schopenhauerŕ the relation of man to himself, the universe, the state, and women through the art of aphorism. ' VEDERE DIN INTERIOR Liliana-Nicoleta Hanganu A treia în seria manifestărilor pe care Cabinetul Numismatic al Muzeului Municipiului Bucureşti le organizează anual, după „Portretul în medalistică" ( 1998) şi „Monumente şi edificii în medalistică" (1999), expoziţia „Eminescu şi epoca sa" s-a înscris în amplul program naţional dedicat Anului 2000 - Anul Eminescu. Aceasta a reprezentat o noutate prin colaborarea dintre două instituţii - Muzeul Municipiului Bucureşti şi Monetăria Statutului, care au prezentat colecţia col. (r) Ioan Dogaru, precum şi piese din colecţiile regretatului Nicolae Curdov şi Aurel N. Curdov. La acestea s-au adăugat medalii, plachete şi machete din patrimoniul celor două .instituţii organizatoare. De asemenea, expoziţia s-a deosebit de altele de acest gen prin criteriile de abordare a tematicii, susţinută de o varietate de piese medalistice şi de cartofilie. Pornind de la subiectul central - Eminescu - s-a încercat reconstituirea unei întregi epoci, cuprinsă între 1850 şi 1889, fie în ceea ce a avut ea ca evenimente istorice, politice şi militare majore: Unirea Principatelor Române, Războiul de Independenţă, Proclamarea Regatului, fie ca personalităţi marcante ale spiritualităţii româneşti, care, într-un fel sau altul, şi-au legat numele de cel al lui Eminescu: prieteni şi susţinători - Titu Maiorescu, Ion Luca Caragiale, Ion Creangă, Petre P. Carp, A. C. Cuza, dar şi ne-prieteni şi adversari politici, criticaţi în publicistică - C. A. Rosetti, Mihail Pherekyde, Eugeniu Carada. Organizată în spaţiul generos al elegantei Săli de comunicări a Muzeului Municipiului Bucureşti, expoziţia a cuprins 214 medalii şi plachete, dintre care 178 de medalii şi 14 machete cu tematica „Eminescu'', la care s-au adăugat o serie de litografii, cărţi poştale şi fotografii.

Åldersmässigt spänner urvalet från klassikern Ion Luca Caragiale och den rumänska avantgardiska litteraturen till författare som är födda i början av 60-talet. Programmet binds samman av att alla dessa författare har sina rötter i Rumänien, har skrivit på rumänska och har översatts till svenska.
