1. Public Diplomacy: Theory and Practice Course Instructor Dr. Yan Zhen is an assistant professor in the School of International and Public Affairs Course Description The purpose of this course is to explore the origin, development, theoretical debates, mechanisms and practices of public diplomacy of major countries, social groups and individuals. The revolutionary economic globalization and the advent of information society, together with the rise of non-state actors, emerging global challenges and changing international order have arguably changed the practice of public diplomacy in the 21st century. The course involves major concepts and draws inspirations from the studies of international relations, foreign affairs, international communication, international marketing, public relations as well as social psychology.

2. Contemporary China’s Diplomacy/Foreign Policy (1979-2016) Course Instructor WANG Li, Professor at School of International & Public Affairs, Jilin University. Course Objective This course offers a general but advanced treatment of China’s foreign policy since 1979. As a cliché argues, two driving forces—ancient glory and modern humiliation—have aspired China to be a great power in the 21st century. Considering this, the course is designed to cover two major parts: a historical review of China; and a thematic analysis of China’s foreign policy toward 10 areas: e.g. China with the great powers; China with Africa; China with its neighbors; China with Latin America; China with the Central Asia and the Middle Asia; and China with the international organizations.
