The Stance of Sultan Kilij Arslan I towards the 1st. Crusade Expedition : A Study on the Relation of The Rum Seljuk Sultanate and the First Expedition (487-500 H./1094-1107 A.D) 1097 ADE) Prof. Fuaad Abd al-Raheem al-Duwaykat Dept. of Social Sciences - Faculty of Arts & HumanitiesTaibah Univ.- Al-Madinah Al-Munawarrah. K.S.A. Abstract: This study focuses on the stance of the sultan Kilij Arslan I towards the 1st. crusade expedition, especially his cautious and worried reaction from the very beginning when he was acquainted with the news concerning the crusader orientation towards his country. Since his sources informed him with a very important and specific information about the crusaders’ moves. This research deals also with the Sultan’s efforts to protect the sultanate from the crusade threat. Thus the work disclosed the elements of his defense plan. He proposed to protect his capital from defeat by the crusaders. The study dealt with the analysis of the attacks; that done by Arslan against the Byzantine crusaders, which besieged Nicaea. It sheds light on the fighting operations done by the crusaders against Nicaea. Moreover, the study highlighted the efforts of Arslan to conpansate his defeat in Nicaea and the confrontation of Byzantine crusaders in Dorolium. His defeat there oriented him to change his strategy from the military option to the policy of the burned land, to deprive the crusader’s troops from the recourses of the territories they pass by. That may weaken and cost them massive losses in their man power. Finally the study highlights the factors of defeat through the analytic approach. key words: Kilij Arslan, Crusades, Rum Seljuks, Crusaders, Byzantine. املقدمة : لسلطنة سﻻجقة الروم )470 -708هـ/ 1077- Prof. Dr. Mehmet Kalpaklı January 2018 In the early 17th-century Ottoman Empire, a series of sociocultural, administrative, political, and economic changes were underway that left their mark on how the learned and cultural elite viewed the empire and themselves. Though contemporary sources reflect these shifts in many ways , this period’s rich corpus of invective verse , centering around the poet Nefʿī , has been understudied as a historical source. This dissertation rectifies this neglect by examining this invective corpus as a locus of rivalries and enmities revealing how those involved agonistically defined and were defined by their others, thus necessarily defining themselves in the process. Observing this process of definition and self-definition in the light of contemporary historical developments and sources, the dissertation examines invectives produced against both patrons ( i.e., vertical invective) and fellow poet/clients ( i.e., horizontal invective) in such a way as to demonstrate how the ferocity of the period’s invective verse, and reactions thereto, laid bare how Ottoman elites’ imaginary of themselves was in fact a marginalizing construct.

In preparing the thirteen volumes of the Catalogue of Oriental and Indian Coins I was frequently at a loss for chronological lists. Prinsep’s Useful Tables, edited by Edward Thomas, was the only trustworthy English authority I could refer to, and it was often at fault. I generally found it necessaiy to search for correct names and dates in the Arabic historians, and the lists of dynasties prefixed to the descriptions of their coins in my Catalogue were usually the result of my own researches in many Oriental authorities. It has often been suggested to me that a reprint of these lists would be useful to students, and now that the entire Catalogue is published I have collected the tables and genealogical trees in the present volume. : VI PREFACE The work is, however, much more than a reprint of these tables. I have not only verified the dates and pedigrees by reference to the Arabic sources and added a number of dynasties which were not represented in the Catalogue of Coins, but I have endeavoured to make the lists more intelligible by prefixing to each a brief historical introduction.

My thesis, however, aims to focus specifically on the military aspects of these confrontations, an area which for this period has been surprisingly neglected in the existing secondary literature. My intention is to give answers to a series of questions, of which

  • Turkish Response to the Christian Call for Dialogue
TURKISH RESPONSE TO THE CHRISTIAN CALL FOR DIALOGUE A dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY By Kenan Cetinkaya December 2014 Examining Committee Members: Prof. Leonard J. Swidler, Advisory Chair, Department of Religion Prof. Khalid Blankinship, Department of Religion Prof. Umeyye Isra Yazicioglu, St. Joseph's University, Theology & Religious Studies Prof. Peter Gran, External Member, Department of History ABSTRACT After the Second Vatican Council, which took place in 1962-1965, the Catholic Church reached out to both co-religionists and non-Christians. As the second largest religion in the world (after Christianity), the Muslim world began to react to this call for dialogue. Without a worldwide religious authority, Muslim scholars and communities have tried to understand and respond to this call for dialogue in their own way. Turkey, as one of the most influential and modern Muslim majority states, joined the discussion about interreligious dialogue, especially with Christians. Very diverse in culture, religion, and thought, Turkish scholars’ discussions and critiques of the dialogue requested by the Christian world have clearly contributed to interreligious dialogue on a global scale in the last decades. This dissertation examines the development of interreligious dialogue in Turkey and the works of prominent and widely recognized Turkish theologians as a response to the Christian call for dialogue. It explores the problems, challenges, and future of the perception of interreligious dialogue in the Turkish context, in particular, the views of three influential Turkish scholars: Abdurrahman Küçük, Mahmut Aydın, and Davut Aydüz. The conclusion proposes the Turkish Model for interreligious dialogue.

  • Coins of the CRUSADERS
Coins of the CRUSADERS The Crusades were a series of military conflicts of a religious character waged by much of Christian Europe against external and internal threats. Crusades were fought against Muslims, pagan Slavs, Russian and Greek Orthodox Christians, Mongols, Cathars, Hussites, and political enemies of the popes.[1] Crusaders took vows and were granted an indulgence for past sins. The Crusades originally had the goal of recapturing Jerusalem and the Holy Land from Muslim rule and were original- ly launched in response to a call from the Eastern Orthodox Byzantine Empire for help against the expansion of the Muslim Seljuk Turks into Anatolia. The term is also used to describe contemporaneous and subsequent campaigns conducted through to the 16th century in territories outside the Levant usually against pagans, heretics, and peoples under the ban of excommunication for a mixture of religious, economic, and political reasons. Rivalries among both Christian and Muslim powers led also to alliances between religious factions against their opponents, such as the Christian alliance with the Sultanate of Rum during the Fifth Crusade. The Crusades had far-reaching political, economic, and social impacts, some of which have lasted into contemporary times. Because of internal conflicts among Christian kingdoms and political powers, some of the crusade expeditions were diverted from their original aim, such as the Fourth Crusade, which resulted in the sack of Christian Constantinople and the partition of the Byzantine Empire between Venice and the Crusaders. The Sixth Crusade was the first crusade to set sail without the official blessing of the Pope, establishing the precedent that rulers other than the Pope could initiate a crusade.
