DOCUMENT ARTISTIC AWAKENING IN ANKARA (1953)1 BÜLent ecevit Until very recently, we Ankara residents were as jealous of Istanbul’s artistic awareness as we were of its sea and its trees. Our trees have yet to reach maturity, and we are as distant from the sea as ever, but an artistic awakening has now begun in Ankara as well. Concert tickets have begun to sell out in the blink of an eye, as soon as they are available. Curiously enough, tickets to the opening night of the opera reportedly sometimes sell out even before they are released.2 I say “reportedly” because this is a story I heard from one of the people interested in opening nights at the opera. Our opera no longer admits people to the concert hall who are ungroomed or who lack a formal dinner jacket. There are frequent balls at the opera. You’d think you’re in 18th-century Vienna. Because, as far as we know, this kind of dandyism no longer exists in any 20th-century city. The aim of Sufism is also to educate self-ego and to preserve the belief within this moral axis. Seyyid Burhaneddin Tirmidhi is an important Sufi who was born at the end of the XII century and lived in the first half of the XIII century. His significance comes from his being the first master of Rumi by teaching him theological and mystical aspect of Islam for a long time. This article examines theological opinions of Seyyid Burhaneddin who has a significant place in the Sufi circles and the Anatolian Islamic culture. Introduction Science of Kalam, first of all explores the vahdâniyet among the God's essence and attributes.1 It also determines the principles of Islam about faith and actions through nass (the Qur‟an and the Sunnah) and builds them on the basis of rational method.2 Sufism brings the truths of Islamic Theology toward general issues into very simple level which let also everyone will be satisfied. -

WOMEN PATRONS IN MEDIEVAL ANATOLIA AND A DISCUSSION OF MĀHBARĪ KHĀTŪN’S MOSQUE COMPLEX IN KAYSERI PATRICIA BLESSING* At the center of Kayseri, facing the well-preserved citadel stands a large architectural complex, consisting of a mosque, madrasa, mauso- leum, and the ruins of a double bathhouse [See figure 1]. The building, known locally as the Hunad Hatun or Huand Hatun Complex, was built in the second quarter of the thirteenth century. Inscriptions on both por- tals of the mosque date to 1237-38, while the other parts of the complex remain undated. At the time of construction, the patron of the complex, Māhbarī Khātūn, was the mother of the ruling Sultan Ghiyāth al-Dīn Kaykhusraw II (R 1237-46) and of the widows of the Sultan ‘Alā’ al-Dīn Kayqubād (R 1219-37).1 With her intervention in Kayseri and the con- struction of two caravanserais near Tokat and Yozgat, Māhbarī Khātūn is one of the most prolific female patrons in medieval Anatolia, and the one who is best documented inmonumental inscriptions, although not in much detail in other written sources of the period, such as chronicles and hagiographies. * Dr., Stanford Humanities Center, Stanford University, 424 Santa Teresa Street, Stan- ford, CA 94305, USA; [email protected]. 1 In modern Turkish, the name is more commonly spelled as Mahperi Hatun. Access for many seems barred by various ideological platforms and walls. Some are deemed too much of this, another too much of that: liberal, religious, anti-Trump, anti-Brexit, pro-life, anti-gay—whatever the label or brand—and some access points are opened, others closed. Gatekeepers are many, deeming who really counts, who really represents. The public square, of course, should be big, bustling, semi-chaotic “places”, rife with ideas, questions, passion, and curiosity, yet measured by standards of decorum, listening, and mutual respect. Most importantly, it should be characterized by a robust (or spunky) humility, aware of its strengths and its weaknesses. It is fair to say that in 2019, our public square could use a little uplift. While certainly not a miracle cure, nor the only possible salves, interfaith dialogue, religious pluralism, liberation theology, and secular humanism have much in their favor to nuance, challenge, and yes, purify our present polarized, and so sometimes catatonic public square. After a brief overview first explaining the title, along with what is meant in this paper by the secular and humility, it will then be argued how interfaith dialogue, religious pluralism, liberation theology, and secular humanism can liberate and purify our public square discourse—namely by practicing and promoting a robust humility. -

The author, Professor Abdul Azim Islahi, is a well-known specialist in the history of Islamic economic thought. In this respect, we have already published his following works: Contributions of Muslim Scholars to th Economic Thought and Analysis up to the 15 Century; Muslim th Economic Thinking and Institutions in the 16 Century, and A Study on th Muslim Economic Thinking in the 17 Century. The present work and the previous series have filled, to an extent, the gap currently existing in the study of the history of Islamic economic thought. In this study, Dr. Islahi has explored the economic ideas of Shehu Uthman dan Fodio of West Africa, a region generally neglected by researchers. He has also investigated the economic ideas of Shaykh Muhammad b. Abd al-Wahhab, who is commonly known as a religious renovator. Perhaps it would be a revelation for many to know that his economic ideas too had a role in his reformative endeavours. -

In the heated debate on Islamic dogmatics, Maturidi school unswervingly protected the authority of the Book and the reason and became the one of the founders of the Sunni theology. Maturidi school successfully applied dialectical principles to ensure the supremacy of the Scriptures and at the same time upheld the role of the reason. They maintained a more rational and tolerant attitude toward many issues, and it is called "Moderatism"by the Sunni scholars. The thought of Maturidi school spread all over Central Asian countries, Afghanistan, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Rome, Persian, Turkey, Egypt and China ,etc.. In today's globalized and diversified international situation, it is of great significance to enhance the study of Maturidi school's theological thought, especially it's theory of God's Science in order to promote ideological and cultural exchanges between our country and Muslim world and to enhance the mutual understanding. 1. Introduction Muslims began to argue about the fundamental principles of Islamic belief after the Prophet passed away. Although the reason of terrorism has been come down to difference between civilizations and religions; that is not the case. Another reason which is argued is that Muslims are unable to integrate into Western societies. However this is not unique to Muslims, it is also a problem for non- Muslim immigrants. Another problem is whether Islam is compatible with democracy or not. Most of the Islamic countries have despotic and oppressive regimes which are economically, politically and socially unstable. However this has nothing to do with Islam. Hundreds years of colonization did not let democratic values and institutions to develop in these countries. Lack of non-governmental organizations in Islamic world; caused these countries to become either a secular despotic or an Islamic oppressive regime. Both situations create an environment for radical groups to exist. To eradicate terrorism, one has to look for its political and economical reasons. The despotic regimes in Islamic countries have to be removed and some Western countries should change their mentality while dealing with terrorism. Although Muslims were blamed for being terrorists; they are the ones who get more damage from terrorism. -

Although accession talks between the EU and Turkey officially began on October 4, 2005, the topic is anything but new.1 In fact, Turkey has been a hotly debated issue with the EU since 1959, when Turkey first applied to become a full member of what was then known as the European Community (EC).2 Why has Turkey been denied membership in the European Union thus far, and what are some of the issues involved? In this chapter, I will briefly introduce the main topics at hand in an effort to give the reader a grasp on the overall picture. I will then use the later chapters as in depth studies of these issues. The purpose of this paper is not to argue one way or another as to whether or not Turkey should be admitted, but rather to provide the reader with information from both sides of the argument. After providing all arguments and weighing them, I will be able to settle some of the issues at hand.
