Combating Terrorism Center Guest Commentary The Late Sheikh Abdullah Azzam’s Books Part III: Radical Theories on Defending Muslim Land through Jihad LCDR Youssef Aboul‐Enein, MSC, USN The Combating Terrorism Center United States Military Academy West Point, NY http://www.ctc.usma.edu Please direct all inquiries to Brian Fishman [email protected] 845.938.2801 Introduction Sheikh Abdullah Azzam is a name that only gets attention among true students of Islamist militancy, yet he has had a tremendous impact on Usama Bin Laden and left him with the tools needed to establish a global jihadist network. Azzam was born in Jenin, Palestine in 1941, and was evicted from his hometown of Jenin in the 1967 Six‐Day War. He spent years pursuing his studies in Islamic jurisprudence attending university in Syria and graduating with a doctorate in Islamic studies from the prestigious Al‐Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt. He was nicknamed the fighting cleric for his obsession with jihadist ideology and the militant works of ibn Taymiyyah (1258 AD). Azzam believed the only way to reclaim his lost homeland was through violent jihad which later became his bsession. On or about 1980, Azzam realized that the Arab jihadists fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan required organization, safe house, and structure. He established Maktab al‐Khidmat lil Mujahideen (The Services Offices for Arab Jihadists) which attracted Usama Bin Laden, then graduating from King Abdul‐ Aziz University to join his new venture. Azzam convinced Bin Laden that his financial connections, business experience, and dedication would be of great use to his new organization in Pakistan. -

E-mail Address: [email protected] ℡+2348032477652 Abstract The Fulani Jihad (1804-1810) led by Shehu, Uthman Dan Fodio was successfully prosecuted against the established Hausa dynasty in Northern Nigeria. It led to the emergence of a theocratic state, the Sokoto Caliphate, which was administered largely as a federation, due to its wide expanse and diverse composition of its people. The causes, management and impact of the Jihad as well as important lessons for national integration and development in contemporary Nigerian political life form the basic themes of this paper. Key words: Jihad, Integration, Theocracy, National Development, Caliphate Introduction The Fulani Jihad (1804-1810), had its heart and beginning in Gobir. It should be noted that the very essence of the Jihad against established Hausa dynasty was in itself a revolution in relationship between the Hausa and the Fulanis. It is informative to note that Islam was introduced into Hausa land about the 14 th century by foreign Mallams and merchants, such as Wagara Arabs and the Fulanis (Adeleye 1971:560; Afe 2003:23; Hill,2009:8). ARTICLES Localizing Fulbe Architecture Mark Dike DeLancey, DEPAUL UNIVERSITY DOI: 10.5192/21540993050101 ABSTRACT Fulbe architecture of the Adamawa Region, Cameroon, and the Fouta Djallon region, Guinea, bear many formal similarities. Fulbe in Cam- eroon often point to architectural form as a marker of ethnic identity. Scholars have also perceived ethnicity, as well as Islam, as central to an- alyzing Fulbe architecture, drawing upon a now-outdated understand- ing of pulaaku, or Fulbeness. Instead, the Fulbe should more appro- priately be perceived, especially in the realm of permanent architecture, as extraordinarily adaptive. The focus on ethnicity and Islamic faith has in fact blinded scholars to the much stronger connections that can be drawn with local architectural traditions, irrespective of religion or ethnicity. Having just traveled through nine Muslim countries, ranging from Pakistan and Bangladesh to the Gulf States, Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon, I would answer that it is leading, slowly but surely, to reassessment and change.' Attempts to accelerate the pace of this change, however, without full understanding of its complex topology, and the deep-rooted commitment by most Muslim women to spiritual and cultural authenticity, could halt or even reverse this process at great cost to women particularly and Muslim societies as a whole. -

In the first chapter I deal with the fixed punishments or Mal hududrl; four punishments are discussed: the punishments for theft, armed robbery, adultery and slanderous allegations of unchastity. The other two punishments which are usually classified as "hudud11, i.e. the punishments for wine-drinking and apostasy are dealt with in the second chapter. The idea that they are not punishments of "hudud11 is fully ex- plained. Neither of these two punishments was fixed in definite terms in the Qurfan or the Sunna? therefore the traditional classification of both of then cannot be accepted. -

For National Open University of Nigeria 4 Module One: Unit 1: The Concept of Tajdīd and its Development 1.0 Introduction There is a strong tradition of revival and reform in Islam. The concept of Tajdid (renewal/revival) is a fundamental concept within Islam, based on the Qur'an and Sunnah of the Prophet. The preaching of Islam itself is presented in the Qur'an as the revival of the true religion of God and reform of corrupt practices that had crept into the practices of religion by earlier peoples. Islam regards itself as both the corroboration and the purification of the original faith as held by prophet Ibrahim, father of monotheism. Thus, Islam is not a new religion but a re-affirmation and renewal of the ancient Ibrahimic belief.
