  • Vilosell 2015 Tomàs Cusiné
TOMÀS CUSINÉ VILOSELL 2015 TOMÀS CUSINÉ || In 2003, Tomàs Cusiné decided to embark on a new wine producing project; one into which he could put all of his passion and knowledge for producing the finest wines. His extensive experience in the DO (with Castell de Remei) enables Tomàs to create wines of the highest character and elegance, marking the beginning of a project with great hopes and ambitions His aim, as always, was to elaborate wines full of character that were capable of fully reflecting the characteristics of the soils from which they were produced. He also wished to take up the challenge of producing wines that reflected his personal wine-making philosophy. COSTERS DEL SEGRE || The Costers del Segre DO was created in 1986 and it have seven subzones with several different micro climes. It is a unique zone with both indigenous, native varieties and more recent plantings of many other varieties. Tomàs Cusiné is located in the village of El Vilosell, province of Lleida subzone Les Garrigues, in the totally south of the DO, calcareous area on the north side of the Sierra de la Llena bordering by the province of Tarragona and the regions of Priorat and Conca de Barberá. VILOSELL 2015 || BLEND | 55% Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo), 25% Syrah & 20% Garnatxa VINEYARDS | Vineyard parcels are located on slopes, with older vines planted ‘en vaso’ and other varieties (planted in 2004) on a high density trellis system. Soils are mostly calcerous clay, with gravels and good drainage. WINEMAKING | Hand harvested and cooled in cold-storage rooms before going through the selection table.

Columbia Restaurant & the Gonzmart Family’s Wine Philosophy At the Columbia Restaurant we believe the relationship of wine and food is an essential part of the dining experience and that two aspects of elegant dining deserve specialized attention: The preparation and serving of the cuisine and the selection of the finest wines and stemware to accompany it. In keeping with our tradition of serving the most elegant Spanish dishes, we have chosen to feature a collection of Spain's finest wines and a selection of American wines, sparkling whites and Champagne. Our wines are stored in our wine cellar in a climate controlled environment at 55° Fahrenheit with 70% humidity. The Columbia Restaurant’s wine list represents 4th and 5th generation, owner and operators, Richard and Andrea Gonzmart’s lifetime involvement in their family’s business. Their passion for providing guests the best wines from Spain, as well as their personal favorites from California, are reflected in every selection. They believe wines should be affordable and represent great value. Columbia Restaurant's variety of wines illustrates the depth of knowledge and concern the Gonzmart family possesses, by keeping abreast of the wine market in the United States and by traveling to Spain. This is all done for the enjoyment of our guests. We are confident that you will find the perfect wine to make your meal a memorable one. • Spain Is a Viticulture Miracle Waiting to Happen, and Has Been in This Pregnant State for Longer Than Seems Decent
SPAIN In a nutshell: Land of American oak, sherry, and loin-yielding bush vines. Grapes: Tempranillo, Garnacha (Grenache) (RED), Airen, Viura (Maccabeo), Verdejo, Albarino (XMITE) Spain is a viticulture miracle waiting to happen, and has been in this pregnant state for longer than seems decent. Proud possessor of more land devoted to vines than any other, Spain is only just beginning to capitalize on this resource in any consistent or cohesive way - which is perhaps not surprising. If it had Germany's love of efficiency, or France's respect for bureaucracy, Spain might be sending us oceans of judiciously priced wine made expressly for the international market. But Spain is an anarchic jumble of districts and regions, just as its landscape is an anarchic jumble of staggeringly raw scenery and heartbreakingly awful human constructions, and has to be treated as such by the wine enthusiast. There is real treasure to be found by those prepared to dig, however and, as a connoisseur class develops in Spain itself, all manner of ambitious investors are planning to change the image of Spanish wine. A look at the map suggests just how much climatic diversity there is likely to be between Spain's many wine regions, from the soggy vine yards of Galicia on the north Atlantic coast to the baked Mediterranean south east. Spain's saving grace, viticulturally, is the altitude of her vineyards, many over 650 m (2000 ft). A high proportion of Spanish vineyards therefore manage to produce grapes with good levels of color and acidity simply because night-time temperatures are relatively low, and grapes do not ripen until the end of a usefully prolonged growing season.

  • De Beroz White from Somontano
DE BEROZ WHITE FROM SOMONTANO VARIETAL: Gewuztraminer VINTAGE: 2015 ALCOHOL: 14% WINEMAKER: Nicolás Brull WINEMAKING: The time of harvest is carefully chosen to get as much of varietal aromas. Once in the winery, maceration lasts for four hours at 10 degrees. Subsequently, the drained juice ferments at medium temperatures (18 degrees) to respect the varietal character of the wine, when finished, the wine rests on its lees to extract the last aroma and gain complexity.. With a lively and elegant shine shows shades of yellow and COLOUR: steely, denoting youth and freshness of the wine. TASTING NOTES With floral aromas, rose petals and violets, fruits, especially lychees and ripe banana, also citrus, it is a distinctly AROMA: varietal and complex wine, with a reminiscent of yeast and baking at the end, as well as with own limestones notes beacuse it rest on its lees. Spectacular attack and very expressive. Bulky, dense and fat PALATE: in its path and with an aftertaste to merengue, very ripe banana and ginger. Somontano is unique in Aragón, if not Spain, in that its wines defy pigeonholing. The name means at the foot of the mountains and perfectly defines the THE REGION: SOMONTANO geographic area where it sits this designation of origin, since it is a transition zone between the Ebro River valley and Pirineos. The DOs Costers del Segre and Navarra are about equidistant, east and west, respectively, and yet Somontano owes nothing to to either of them. Its altitude, climate, soils and native grape varieties are all contributors to the uniqueness of the area.

CASA DEL CANTO CASA DEL CANTO CASA DEL CANTO DO YECLA A wine singing with the great personality of Monastrell • Award-winning, Mediterranean-style, Monastrell- based wines. • Yecla is a small D.O. with very few wineries. Particularly well thought of by Robert Parker. • The cockerel weather vane symbol is expressive of the area’s rural ambience and links with the name Canto which also refers to the crowing of a cockerel. Sun-drenched days and low rainfall contrast with cool nights, providing excellent grape growing conditions. • Two sub-regions: Campo Arriba: the northern part of Yecla between 700-800m. Soil: 70% limestone, 15% clay, 15% sand, poor in organic material, dry.

Likewise, Spain is incredibly rich in culture, with a wide array of languages, histories, cultures, and cuisines found throughout the nation. The sheer number and variety of Spanish wines and the incredible variety of cultures found in Spain may be daunting to the uninitiated. Thus, a guide to Spanish wine and culture, which not only details the two but links them, as well, may prove very helpful to the Spanish wine newcomer or perhaps even a sommelier. This thesis-guide was compiled through the research of the various Denominaciones de Origen of Spain, the history of Spain, the regions of Spain and their individual histories and cultures, and, of course, the many, many wines of Spain.
