Closed Waters Rottnest Island hosts a number of high profile events each year that result in significant boating activity. Visitors are reminded to adhere to requests or instructions from Rottnest Island Rangers, Police, or Officers from the Department of Fisheries and Department of Transport to assist in the management of these events. Water closure maps will be available on RIA website.

New Year’s Eve and the Rottnest Channel Swim During these events RIA will provide a designated area for tenders to be beached, and will restrict beach anchoring, beaching and anchoring in Thomson Bay in front of Samphire Rottnest. This measure has been introduced to assist in crowd management and safety during this time. Appropriate signage will be placed onsite and an area will be provided for the proper use of tenders.

Visitors to Rottnest Island value the clear water and unique marine environment. What goes in your recycle bin We have a commitment to keep Rottnest Island waters clean, and have strategies in place to manage waste. Glass bottles and jars (clean & empty) Why care about waste? The discharge of waste from vessels has the potential to damage the marine environment and Rottnest Island’s amenity. It also poses a public health risk. Aluminium and steel (clean & empty) Liquid Waste All the waters within the Rottnest Reserve are protected. No liquid waste can be discharged anywhere in these waters, including waste from marine sanitation devices Plastic containers and bottles (clean & empty) (MSD’s). Ensure you store your liquid waste appropriately and discharge to a suitable mainland facility or outside the marine reserve. Paper (not shredded) Solid Waste Cardboard (please flatten) If possible, help to reduce carbon emissions and carry your own waste and recycling off the island.
