The Council of Regency is the highest institutional ranking body: it is composed by the two Regents – Capitani Reggenti, who act collectively, whose role corresponds to that of the Head of State. The first Regents were appointed in 1243. They remain in office for six months and every year, on 1st April and 1st October, a suggestive investiture ceremony is celebrated.
