AFL FROM THE EDITOR

The halfway point of the season gives us a P W L D % Pts chance to reflect on the season to date. Geelong 11 11 0 0 143.3 44 Collingwood 11 10 1 0 178.3 40 Carlton 11 8 2 1 137.6 34 Hawthorn 11 8 3 0 126.9 32 Few sides across the grades can rest on their laurels at the halfway stage of the AFL competition. Only four Sydney 11 7 3 1 108.9 30 out of the seventy-eight teams in the League remain unbeaten; Macquarie University (Division Four), Southern Power (Division Five), (Under 18 Premier Cup), and Campbelltown (Under 18 Challenge Cup). West Coast 11 7 4 0 123.1 28 On the flipside, only two sides are yet to register a win in 2011; Campbelltown (Premier Division) and Holroyd- Parramatta (Division Five). Fremantle 11 6 5 0 98.8 24

Essendon 11 5 5 1 119.1 22 The season has also thrown up some exciting moments. Some moments that come to mind include UNSW kicking a goal after the siren to defeat Campbelltown in Round 2 of the Premier Division competition, and Camden producing a St Kilda 11 4 6 1 94.0 18 twenty-plus goal turnaround to notch their first win in Division Two, against Balmain. The Round before the June long weekend also saw the first draw of the season, where Illawarra and St Ignatius, Riverview, could not be separated in Melbourne 11 4 6 1 93.7 18 their Under 18 Premier Cup clash. That weekend also saw a couple of notable milestones being achieved– with Richmond 11 4 6 1 90.4 18 Tony Mance playing his 300th club game for Holroyd-Parramatta (Division Two), and club-captain, Alan Kymantas bringing up the century for UTS (Premier Division). Both sides did the right thing and win for these two champions. North Melbourne 11 4 7 0 99.7 16 11 3 8 0 84.2 12 Last weekend, the best players of the competition represented Sydney in Interleague matches in Cairns and Newcastle. Unfortunately, neither side was able to register a win against tough opponents. The Under 23 Develop- Adelaide 11 3 8 0 78.9 12 ment Squad were beaten to the tune of ten goals by the Riverina League, while the Senior side matched it with AFL Cairns, only to fall short by 16 points. Full match reports can be read on Pages 4 and 5 of the Record. Brisbane 11 2 9 0 77.6 8

Port Adelaide 11 2 9 0 68.3 8 So, to this weekend, where matches are spread over three days. The first is a Friday night fixture with UTS hosting Balmain at . The venue is a happy hunting ground for the Bats, as it was the scene of their first Premier Gold Coast 10 2 8 0 54.7 8 Division win over Campbelltown. Their forward line was potent on that day with Hamish Turner starring, with Andrew Davis playing a strong supporting role. Balmain, themselves, sit equal top with East Coast, and, fair to say, have exceeded everyone‘s expectations to date. They should regain Troy Luff and Nic Fosdike, while in-form, Daniel Turner is expected to miss after pulling a hamstring. St Kilda 12.9-81 def. Western Bulldogs 8.9-57 Pennant Hills will fancy their chances against Sydney University, who are coming off a loss to North Shore, at Mike West Coast 15.16-106 def. Before that, they were in strong form, with Sebastian Parker and Tim Wales, among the Geelong 13.10-88 def Hawthorn 13.5-83 players hitting their straps. Sydney Uni are crippled, somewhat, by a number of injuries, and will be out to prove the Carlton 19.10-124 def Brisbane 9.9-63 loss against the Bombers was a minor hiccup. There is plenty of class, with players such as Tim Barrett and Adam Campbell. Sydney 9.21-75 def Richmond 9.11-65 St George were unable to overcome a slow start against Balmain before the break, eventually going down by four Fremantle 15.8-98 def Essendon 9.10-64 goals. They could hold their heads high with the effort they showed, and will be favoured to beat Campbelltown at Olds Park. Nils Williams was brilliant up forward against the Bats, but might not get enough supply with Stephen Collingwood 19.15-129 def Melbourne 6.5-41 Wilsen and Declan Donohue keen to re-start their charge toward the finals. Port Adelaide Bye The last Saturday match sees another tough prospect for Western Suburbs against UNSW at Picken Oval. UNSW sit just outside the top five, and will need to win to stay in touch. The Magpies have endured a tough first-half to the season, and a loss could spell the end of their season. With a fresh approach, they could challenge the Bulldogs.

ROUND 13 ROUND 14 The Sunday game sees Illawarra host North Shore. The home ground advantage will no doubt aide the Lions, who Friday Friday Western Bulldogs v Adelaide @ Etihad Hawthorn v Essendon @ MCG defeated Western Suburbs last start. AFL Sydney Development vs Riverina FL U18 PREMIER CUP MATCH RESULTS — ROUND 9

A nine-goal opening quarter paved the way for Riverina to register a 60-point win over the Sydney Under-23 Devel- opment Squad at Newcastle No. 1 Sportsground on Saturday afternoon. ILLAWARRA 3.6, 6.8, 10.11, 12.13 (85) ST IGNATIUS, RIVERVIEW 2.3, 6.8, 10.10, 12.13 (85) As part of a double header which saw Black Diamond defeat Farrer in the earlier encounter, Riverina were keen to avenge defeat at the hands of the Under 23 outfit at last year‘s NSW/ACT Regional Championships at Wagga Wagga, and were irrepressible in the opening quarter. Gohl, J. Davis, P. Ferguson, D. Gross It was a clear tactic of the Riverina side to play a physical brand of football and use their experience and bigger bodies to give them first use of the football.

The tactic worked and the going didn‘t get much better for the Sydney side for the remainder of the quarter, as Riverina won all the key statistics and were finding targets easy to come by in the attacking half.

The match was effectively over at quarter-time with Riverina boasting a 54-point lead.

Sydney found some improvement in the second quarter courtesy of greater accountability and ball movement, which saw them register three goals, yet to be outscored again by their rivals. OTHER DIVISION MATCH RESULTS—ROUND 9

Pennant Hills‘ product, Jarred Mobbs typified the greater accountability with an effective tagging display, but there DIVISION THREE were too many contributors for the Troy Maiden-coached side, with Jarrah Maksymow, and eventual best-on- ground, Jamie Maddox, proving particularly dangerous.
