AFL FROM THE EDITOR

Who would believe we are nearly halfway P W L D % Pts through the season, with Representative Geelong 9 9 0 0 144.4 36 football kicking off next weekend. Collingwood 9 8 1 0 167.0 32 Hawthorn 9 7 2 0 131.4 28 Carlton 9 6 2 1 126.0 26 This time of season also means Representative football is almost upon us. Next weekend, the cream of the crop in football will be taking the field representing the League in Newcastle and . Essendon 9 5 3 1 133.1 22

Sydney 9 5 3 1 100.0 22 The Senior squad will be playing at Cazaly Stadium against the best players from the Cairns competition. A strong side, under the tutelage of Michael Cousens, is expected to represent the League with only a few players unavail- West Coast 9 5 4 0 119.5 20 able. The side picked will be looking to post a win after falling short against the Victorian Amateurs last year in Mel- Fremantle 9 5 4 0 119.5 20 bourne.

Richmond 10 4 5 1 90.6 18 The Under 23 Development squad will also have a tough assignment against the Riverina League at Newcastle‘s No. 1 Sportsground, which recently hosted the Swans Reserves and Ainslie, in the NEAFL competition. The Under Melbourne 9 3 5 1 98.8 14 23‘s come into the fixture in winning form after taking out last year‘s Regional Championships in Wagga Wagga. St Kilda 9 3 5 1 96.6 14 Riverina will be keen to avenge for their round-robin loss in the Championships to the Sydney squad. Both sides have been training well, with this weekend‘s Premier Division matches also acting as the last chance for 9 3 6 0 90.0 12 individuals to impress in club colours. Final squads will be announced next week- stay tuned to the AFL Sydney Adelaide 9 3 6 0 83.3 12 website for further details.

North Melbourne 9 2 7 0 88.0 8 In Premier Division action on the weekend, most matches went to script, with the top three sides winning and remain- ing locked at the top of the ladder on ‗Match Ratio.‘ Brisbane 9 2 7 0 86.0 8 Sydney University arguably face the toughest assignment of the ladder-topping sides against North Shore at home Port Adelaide 10 2 8 0 70.7 8 this weekend. Uni were not at their best against Western Suburbs, and were held goalless for over a quarter in their 45-point win. Impressive, however, was the fact they had eleven individual goalkickers in their fifteen-goal final tally. Gold Coast 8 2 6 0 53.2 8 The ‗bye‘ has been a poisoned chalice for the majority of sides in the AFL, so it will be interesting to see if it has a negative impact on North Shore, as they were in strong form before the break.

At the Village Green, UNSW/ES will need their best performance of the season to topple the top-placed East Coast Carlton 13.15-93 def. Melbourne 6.10-46 on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs were challenged in their 18-point win over St George, with midfielder-cum- forward, Max Collett influential on the final result. The Eagles have been deadly in front of goal, with the top two Sydney 10.12-72 def. North Melbourne 9.17-71 goalkickers on the competition set to line up on Saturday afternoon. St Kilda 15.12-102 def Fremantle 7.14-56 Geelong 21.13-139 def Gold Coast 10.13-73 At North Dalton Park, will start favourites against Western Suburbs, who have struggled with only one win to Port Adelaide 13.11-89 def Richmond 10.14-74 their name. A loss could be the final blow for the Magpies, but will have a chance against Illawarra, who were flat last week after a resurgence in form in recent weeks, against Pennant Hills. Brisbane 15.11-101 def Adelaide 8.13-61 There are also two Premier Division matches on Sunday, including one at , where Balmain host St Collingwood 16.9-105 def West Coast 7.11-53 George. St George were more competitive last week, registering more scoring shots against the Bulldogs, and they will need to convert every opportunity to stretch Balmain who comfortably won a high-scoring affair against Camp- Hawthorn 13.13-91 def Western Bulldogs 9.8-62 belltown. In the final match, the two bottom sides face off with the Blues playing off against UTS. One side will sign Essendon Bye their club song for the first time in 2011.

Last weekend‘s action again showed the evenness of the competition with the previously undefeated sides in Divi- sion One, Two and Three suffering their first losses of the season. ROUND 11 ROUND 12 On the other end of the table, the club song was sung loudly at Camden, with the Cats Senior side notching up their Friday Friday Essendon v Melbourne @ MCG St Kilda v Western Bulldogs @ Etihad first win in Division Two against Balmain. Do you think NEAFL will help raise the profile of AFL in Sydney and across NSW/ACT?

For sure, having more local sides playing a higher grade of football will definitely draw more interest. Since moving to Sydney in 2007 I've seen AFL in Sydney getting bigger and better every year and the NEAFL is the next step.
