St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2014 Annual Report 3

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

2014 will go down as a very successful year in the history of St George AFC.

For the second time in three years, the Dragons have one a premiership flag. This one was in the Division 1 Under 19 competition. Great credit must be given to coach Derk Waters, his support staff and the players. While there were a few hiccups during the year, including loss in the semis to North Shore, this side was clearly the best in the competition.

In addition the Premier Division side again made the Preliminary Final being the only side all year to beat the premiers and the Division 1 side came home with a flourish to just mis the semis in the Division 1 competition.

I again acknowledge the wonderful contribution that both Enid and Danny Dwyer and the St George Masos have made financially in season 2014 and over a number of years previously. Long may their involvement continue. We have increased our number of sponsors this year and I thank Todd Sanderson from MI Linings, Watergrill Restaurant at Cronulla RSL, the Guthrie family from Mortgage Choice, David Querzoli from Guardian Funerals, Chris Raper, Chris Ryan from AustraIia Post at Edgecliff, OPSM, Lowes and St George Bottle-O. Many of these wre due to the enthusiasm and work of our Sponsorship Manager Jack Scully.

I publically thank and praise our treasurer Gavin Raper who has overseen our finances to the point that the club is now debt free having repaid all its debts and loans and has a small cash surplus to begin season 2015 with. Our single biggest need is to diversify our income and create a regular income stream.

Our coaching staff led by Club Coach Terry Mudge and supported by Ben (BJ) Merson, Damian Bruty, Derek Waters, Gavin Raper and Kieran Donohue deserve high praise for their dedication and ability to teach. Support from Football Manager Todd ‘Rabbits” Sanderson and his team of Kev Wilsen, John Addison and Ian Ford was delivered every week. The professional behavior from our physio staff of Jess Calderara, Brett Liu and when called upon Jim Kazaglis made us the envy of most clubs. Bobby Sterling made sure we were on time and we valued the many volunteers who did jobs such as boundaries, umpires escort or water boys and in particular David Watts, Jono Ford and Lachlan Ryan who were regular contributors.

And of course a special thanks to the players who trained hard and bought into the St George Dragons DNA.

I must make note of two milestones. Popular Life Member Jon Shineberg played his 250th senior match for the club. Not only has Jon been a great player for the club but he also has contributed at committee level over a number of years and he adds enormously to the Dragons DNA. His mate Shane Demir another tireless worker for the club played his 200th senior game. These 2 players along with their mates Gavin Raper, Vinnie Stevens and Rick Talbot are what a club is about.

Off the field the achievements were no less impressive. They included: • The further development of the St George Academy • Achieving Level 3 in the State Governments Good Sports Program • The 1964 Premiership reunion and Back to St George Day • The improved club newsletter • The club financially out of debt

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2014 Annual Report 4

Our Vice-President Andrew Wynn expanded the St George Academy to look after both Under 17 and Under 15 juniors in the St George area. In years to come I have no doubt that this will be one of the pillars that is seen as central to the role the St George Dragons plays in the Sydney SAFL competition. Thank you also to all of his helpers.

We were blessed with our canteen ladies, Patricia Jones, Mandy Tomlins and Maureen Ford with help from Mandy Bnnett. Not only do they organize a financially successful canteen but they engender a spirit of fun and co-operation into the clubhouse. Thank you to all of you and your helpers.

To all of the committee members who run the club in a most professional and unobtrusive way. We certainly need more volunteers to help you but what you do is most appreciated.

Finally thanks to the players and your partners and families. I am sure that you would have felt an increased demand on your time and effort. There are a number of improvements that we must make on and off the field as we strive to win the Premier Division flag in season 2015.

Brendan Donohue President

VICE-PRESIDENT'S REPORT

My main focus as VP is to support Brendan to ensure the long term viability & success of St. George AFC. To achieve this we need more players so we can create more teams, and raise more income to ensure we can provide the best coaching and club experience for all players and supporters.

To attract more players for future seasons we have: • spent considerable time liaising with the Sydney South Junior clubs and players to support them in their activities and make them realize that St. George is the best alternative for their post-junior AFL career, and • updated the St. George website and various facebook pages to present a professional image to potential recruits.

In addition to the running of the St. George Academy, we also had every junior club U17 squad, except one, come to Olds Park and train with our U19s which I think works better than sending players out to the junior clubs. The one club that couldn’t come to us, myself, Derek, and some players went to that club to run a training session. Plus I have attended each junior club’s presentation event to encourage those finishing U17s to come to St. George next season.

My goal is to have two U19 teams at St. George next season and we have a specific plan to attract as many ex-junior players in the off-season from our area as possible. However it will take additional support from all players to attract & retain U19s in record numbers to fill a 2nd team. I hope everyone can do their part.

On the income generation side we have had some success in attracting some new sponsors to the club. Jack Scully did a great job in this respect. Plus the Jones family helped us gain Watergrill, Todd Sanderson brought his company MI Linings on board, and through one of the Academy parents, Guardian Funerals also came on board as new Platinum sponsors.

This has been a good start, but with the ever increasing cost of playing in the Sydney AFL, we will need even more sponsors for 2015 and beyond.

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2014 Annual Report 5

Having more players and more teams also supports our income generation goals. With more people at our social events we can raise more money as well as offer greater exposure to our sponsors. So the two are definitely linked.

Thank you to the support of all the committee and coaches in our 2014 activities, but in particular Brendan & Richard who supported me in every request I made.

Congratulations to all the teams for strong seasons, and with a steady flow of juniors coming to the club in the ensuing years the future is very bright for St. George AFC.

ANDREW WYNN VICE-PRESIDENT 2014

SECRETARY’S REPORT

As we develop the facilities and football development programs through the Academy, there is increasing pressure on the administrative resources and it has only been because the president, Brendan Donohue has been able to incorporate much of the “follow-up”, on matters at any time current to action, and the usual “band of brothers and sisters” that we have “got through the year” in some sought of equilibrium.

Statutory requirements of the PUBLIC OFFICER have been met as have the requirements regarding the Liquor Licence, though recent changes regarding RSA qualifications need to be reviewed before next season. Further, the Liquor Admission Board has put us (and all similar Limited Licensees) on notice of increased fees next year.

The Club has reached the NSW GOVERNMENT’S GOOD SPORT PROGRAMME , Platinum level, during the year, the highest available.

PROPERTY management, particularly football kit and equipment has been a cooperative venture with Kevin Wilsen as “ring-master”.

CANTEEN management has quietly shifted to Trish Jones and her “three witches” and any-one she can rope-in on any day. This has taken considerable pressure off the administration, though the “duty roster” among the player group could do with a little “how’s your father”.

CLUBHOUSE management has as usual fallen to Bobby “Steptoe” Stirling, assisted by Marcia (his boss) and Bill Kazaglis. Presenting themselves every week to steam clean the thoughtless mess some footballers seem to leave behind.

THE NSWAFL have as usual, been of particular help, with special note to the efforts of Matt Graham and Joe La Posta.

With the improvements to the playing arena and facilities, has come an increasing interest from other sports and commercial activities to use Old’s #1, with the inevitable “over-use” of the ground. The playing surface “needs to have a rest” so that the heavily used areas can be rejuvenated. This is particularly evident in the “goal squares” and the point of entry to the playing surface.

At the end of last year’s Secretary “grumble” I expressed the hope that we might get a management approach to Sydney Football, rather than the administrative model that prevails. Sadly that was not to be with the changes at the top, though the coming year might see those matters develop, particularly with the Council amalgamations , voluntary or enforced, next year.

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2014 Annual Report 6

In the case of amalgamations, the NSW Government has “floated” 5 LGA’s for Sydney, most likely as an “ambit” offering. Though I suspect, from previous community involvement, that 8 Super LGA’s is the most likely. Where does that leave the NSWAFL who’s Sydney structure is in dire need of review.

Every year, for as long as I can remember I have put Club membership on notice the “grey haired old wrinklies “ can’t go on for ever . While Jon and Ian Ford and the likes of A.B. are always on hand, we really need the next generation of “Clubbies” to step-up at the Annual General Meeting

Richard Orton Club Secretary

TREASURER'S REPORT Six years ago St George was in the red by about $80K which was closer to $100K once a few extra surprises that had arrived in the mail were accounted for. Since then we’ve paid all our bills on time and paid out all liabilities.

In 2014 we spent almost $20K on building redevelopment work and received a further $25K in grants to install terracing on the hill. Each grant is a vote of confidence in the Club by local and state government authorities and the AFL. Because of these grants Old Parks is slowly developing into a true community asset and once new light towers get installed in 2015 Olds Park will have received over $900K in investment since 2012.

Long-term St George needs to consider how to develop an asset base that can generate an ongoing income and help reduce our reliance on key benefactors like Danny Dwyer. The Sydney football league certainly isn’t getting any cheaper to run with umpires and administration fees now costing over $31K per year. St George can’t be reliant on one person for its ongoing financial viability and this risk needs to be mitigated.

If players are not already aware their registration fees cover about 20% of the Club’s total expenditure. The rest is raised through long term sponsors such as Maso’s, generous donors such as Danny Dwyer, canteen takings and social events.

The Club took in approximately $111K and had outgoings of $143K; however debt reduction ($5.5K) and expenditure on the redevelopment of Olds Park ($18K) accounted for $23.5K of this difference. In October we also paid out $3.5K in GST on grant money received that can be reclaimed once the terracing is built. What remains is a differential of a little over $5K and I am confident that a few small improvements to social events and sponsorship, described below, will bridge this gap.

Jack Scully’s efforts to bring in new sponsors and the pre-season golf day organised by Kieran Donohue and Jon Shineberg were two developments that will strengthen St George’s finances in the years to come. Sponsorship income rose from $13K in 2013 to almost $24K in 2014 in part because of these developments. Increasing sponsorship is another indicator of the confidence that local businesses have in the Club.

Congratulations to Jack Scully for using his initiative in getting new sponsors on-board and from businesses that would not necessarily have ever thought of being involved with St George. Any sponsorship, no matter how big or small makes an important contribution to the Club’s success. Feedback was positive so hopefully Jack can continue on from his good work in 2014 and grow his list of local business supporters.

The golf day was a great success, all the more so considering this was the first time it was run. By all accounts those that took part had an enjoyable day and financially it raised several thousand dollars which helps pay for jumpers, physios, ground hire and medical supplies. The basic model is in place and with a little fine-tuning the opportunity exists to grow this into a successful long-term fundraiser.

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2014 Annual Report 7

Canteen sales ($18.5K) were broadly similar to last year’s ($20.7K) despite having the first home game of the year transferred away from Olds. Trish Jones, Maureen Ford and Mandy Tomlins put in many hours in running this important function. I might add Trish Jones also managed to bring on- board Watergrill Cronulla as new sponsor too.

To conclude, St George’s financial position has improved year on year for the last five years and there is reason to believe that 2015 will be a further improvement. A big thank you to all those who volunteered their time to support St George as it continues to go from strength to strength.

Gavin Raper Treasurer

FOOTBALL MANAGER'S REPORT Upon review Season 2014 proved to be a successful year on many levels. The U19's secured the clubs first "Colts" Premiership in 10 years, the utilisation of the Division 1 team as a development path for our younger players provided over 130 games of valuable senior football experience, whilst our Premier Division side finished 3rd for the second year in a row.

Kudos to Derek Waters and the 19's boys for winning the premiership, overcoming a very good North Shore side in the decider. Throughout the year the boys played an exciting brand of football which culminated in them losing only 4 games on their way to premiership glory. With 10 members of the full time squad still at U17 level (plus the other 6 top up U17's used throughout the season) the possibility of going "back to back" is not beyond the realms of belief.

As mentioned above the Division 1 side this year was used as a development pathway for some of our younger players in order for them to experience the step-up to senior football. After a shaky start to the season the team mix of "youth and experience" started to gel mid year and the boys were unlucky not to make the finals in the end. Ably coached by Ben Merson & Damian Bruty (and assisted on field by club stalwarts Jon Shineberg, Rick Talbot & Shane Demir) the valuable experience gained by the younger players will no doubt bear fruit for the club in the seasons to come, with quite a few of the younger players having already gone on to play Premier Division.

The Premier Division boys did both themselves and the club proud again in Season 2014 by making the Preliminary Final for the 2nd year running. Considering the bulk of the 40 man squad used throughout the year are still under the age of 23 (and 15 of the 40 were eligible to play 19's!) the future of the club looks bright. With other clubs in Sydney able to dish out the big bucks to attract quality players it is a testament to Terry Mudge and his coaching staff of Kieran Donohue & Gavin Raper that we are even able to compete with these clubs, let alone beat them. Ultimately the only difference between ourselves and the top 2 sides of Pennant Hills & Manly this year is big match experience, but as the next few years unfold and our squad gains more experience I'd expect hopes of winning our first Premier Division premiership since 1993 could soon be fulfilled.

A massive shout out to Brendan and the rest of the committee for showing faith in me in my role as Football Manager. It's a job I love and hope to continue in for many years (provided you'll have me!). To Brendan in particular; thank you for mentoring me and reigning in my (over) enthusiasm at times haha. It's an honour to serve you. Thank you also to the entire coaching and management staff for making my job easier, although at times I have no doubt I made decisions that may not have been in your own personal best interests, but ultimately were in the best interests of the club. Hindsight would suggest I got most of them right. A big thank you also to Jess & Brett (and Michael) for taking care of all things related to the physio/first aid requirements of the players throughout the season.

In closing I'd like to thank all those other individuals (too many to name) who give of their time to ensure the club continues to run. From the top down we are blessed to have so many good people doing their bit, whether it be filling water bottles, setting up on game day, washing jerseys or manning the canteen at home games. Without these people a club cannot exist and with the possibility of us

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2014 Annual Report 8

fielding an extra side next year we will be seeking more help, so please put your hand up and have a crack.

Bring on 2015!

Cheers Rabbits

Todd Sanderson Football Manager

ST. GEORGE ACADEMY REPORT

2014 was the second year of the St. George Academy and proved successful again in cementing this club as the premier club for coaching, player development, and junior club support in Sydney South.

At our monthly Academy sessions we had 20-30 junior players come along and receive some senior club training. Plus almost as importantly we were able to introduce their parents to the St. George club and facilities. Feedback we have received has been excellent so the Academy is definitely seen as a benefit to junior player development as well as recognition for the invited players.

Highlights in 2014 included:

• the inclusion of U15 players from the local clubs in to the Academy, • ex-St.George player and current day GWS Giants player Dylan Addison attending Academy training & talking to the boys about his AFL journey, and • another victory in our end-of-season game vs Knox Grammar.

In particular I want to thank Derek Waters, Kieran Donohue and Gavin Raper for their coaching of the Academy players. Plus the support of quite a few players who helped out with the training sessions throughout the year who presented a very professional and friendly image for all St. George players.

Plus thank you to Todd Sanderson and MI Linings for become the major sponsor of the St. George Academy in 2014.

The test of the success of the Academy will be determined by how many of those players come and play at St. George next year and beyond. But I have no doubt that we certainly have attracted quite a few players to St. George that previously would not have considered us.

In 2015 my plan is to expand the number of U17 Academy players so that we will find it easier to fill two U19 teams in the coming years.

Thanks again to all the coaches, players, and committee members that supported the Academy in 2014, and I look forward to a bigger and better Academy in 2015.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP

At the Annual General meeting held in November 2013, there were no members appointed as Life Members. MILESTONE

On 2 August against Holroyd Parramatta St George Dragon’s legend Jon Shineberg played his 250th senior game for the club placing him in 10th position in the club’s 86 year history for the most number of senior games played.

Jon joined the Dragons in season 1997and has played with us for 14 seasons. Of the 250 senior club games 167 were in first grade and 83 are in Ressies with an additional 44 in Under 18’s.

Jon has played in 6 Grand Finals, being an influential member of the Dragon’s side that won Division 2 in 2012. The others were in Under 18’s in 1999, Ressies in 2001 and 2002 and First Grade in 2004 and 2007.

Jon has been the club’s leading goalkicker in all grades, in 1998 and 1999 in Under 18’s, in 2002 and 2012 in Ressies and in 2009 in First Grade. In 1999 he was the leading goalkicker in the Sydney Under 18 competition and in 2012 he lead Division 2 in goalkicking.

Jon has also been on the committee for a number of years as the Secretary. He has been a major organiser of the Presentation Nights, the footie trips and other social occasions many of which he also hosted.

In addition for many seasons he would begin home matches marking the field, buying food and drink for the canteen and for functions and anything else that was needed.

Occasionally he played football!

Jon has won a combination of the Bob McConnell Best Playing Clubman and the Ron Kemp Best Clubman on at least 5 occasions.

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2014 Annual Report 10

SENIOR COACH'S REPORT For the first time in several years we had a playing fixture where we played each team twice through- out 2014. The 2014 season produced a far more competitive competition than in previous years. Our win/loss record for the home away season was 65%. For every 3 games played we won 2 of them.

Six times throughout the season we kicked over 100+ points with highest being 164 against Sydney Hills.

On two occasions we had 100+points kicked against us (101v P/Hills &102v Manly). Our overall goal accuracy rate was at 55%. Offensively our spread of goal kickers in double figures improved to 10. These 10 kicked 75% of all our goals for the year. These changes allowed for us to win 3-4 close games as opposition were re-acting to the obvious structure we had in years gone by. Our backline was the glue that held all this together once again.

We were the only team to defeat the eventual premiers in 2014. (54-46)

For the 2nd year in a row we were 5 quarters away from realizing our ultimate goal. We kept the winner of the preliminary final to the second lowest score in over 25+ years. The problem was they kept us to the lowest score in 25+ years. (27-56)

The table below shows our stats of the past 4 years. It also doesn’t highlight that fact the playing squad in 2014 had 6 genuine under 19’s (Tomlins, Gilbert, Mudge, Shaw, H.Green & Mackenzie- Hicks) playing 100+ games of senior football. We can only imagine what damage they would have inflicted in the 19’s age group if they played there.

I wish to thank Kevin Wilsen for his tireless work as team manager.

Greg King for his support off field and his continual support of the club and boys. Kieran Donohue for his drive to make us a more successful group on field and above all his friendship. It’s the off-field stability that you all provided which provided for our successes in 2014. I sincerely thank you all.

And finally Brendan Donohue & Gavin Raper; thank you so much for your continual support of me and friendship that we have built together over the past 4 years. You both make St.George AFC a enjoyable place to be a part of.

Terry Mudge Senior Coach

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2014 Annual Report 11

RESERVE GRADE COACH'S REPORT

The 2014 season began with a narrow two point victory over , which seemed to set the scene for the rest of the year. Our final tally of 7 wins and 11 losses could have been much different if we were able to close out more games had we have had the experience and composure to do so. Given that a total of 69 players pulled on a jumper in Division One, with only 13 playing more than 10 games, this may account somewhat for the lack of consistency and team cohesion.

Despite all this we did manage to play a high standard of football and we were rarely well beaten. The mix of younger players, Under 19’s and some older heads combined well to put together some solid wins and trouble our often more fancied opponents. The Development side proved to be a good introduction to senior football for many of the younger players and will continue to serve them well as they forge careers at St George.

This season also saw two significant milestones reached for the club. Congratulations to Jon Shineberg on playing his 250th Senior game and to Shane Demir on playing his 200th Senior game. Both players have been long time servants of the club and their continuing input on the field has been invaluable to the development of the younger players. Damian Pratt also celebrated a milestone in playing his 100th Senior game for the club. He always plays with the heart of a true Dragon.

Alex Brooks and Chris Windle were both deserving winners of the Best & Fairest award after great seasons respectively. Alex was a mainstay of our midfield and enjoyed a purple patch through the middle of the year that saw him put his name up for higher selection. Alex is a smart footballer with clean skills and rarely wastes a possession with ball in hand. Chris drifted between First Grade and Division One, and often showed he was a class above in the lower grade. Used in a variety of key positions, his sure hands and ability to read the play repelled many opposition attacks or provided for his teammates down field. Congratulations to two well-deserving clubmen.

It would be remiss not to mention the many volunteers that have assisted in getting the team on the park each week. To our team manager Ian Ford, thank you for all of your efforts behind the scenes in making sure we have what we need on game day. Thank you also to the club committee and personnel, especially Todd Sanderson in his role as Football Manager for the support and legwork undertaken in the organisation of the Division One team.

Thanks must also go to the coaching staff in Ben Merson and Damian Bruty. Their commitment to developing the team and club culture played an important role in the club’s overall success in 2014.

UNDER 19 COACH’S REPORT 2014 will be a year we will all never forget. Back in November we set ourselves the goal of a top two finish. To win the minor premiership was a great thing for the boys and to go on and win the Premiership was an even greater milestone.

Some of the players had been a part of the journey over the last 3 years and most the last two years. We had a lot of new faces arrive at the club this year to top off our list.

To win 14 games and only lose 4 games in the season is a great achievement for the players. Our defence was rock solid all year and only gave up 45 points per game on average and our attack put on 80 points per game on average per game.

During the year we used a total of 39 players and 16 of these were still eligible to play under 17’s football. The future is very bright for the club with the talent coming through with our own academy a great platform to all of the boys who participate in it. St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2014 Annual Report 12

Some facts that during the year. We got around 120 games of senior football into the group of under 19’s. When it came down to the crunch I believe it made a big difference in the back half of the year. During the year we did learn if we took any team lightly it would come back and bite us. When we played team footy and stuck to our structures we won all of our games.

In the second semi-final we did the opposite and tried to play dry weather footy in the rain and we were beaten by better side in North Shore. I could see the hurt in the player’s eyes. They knew what they had done. Role on a week and we played Manly it was a tough hard grind for ¾ quarters. My message at ¾ time was simple either you want to come back next week or this is your last quarter for the year. They responded with a 7 goal last quarter and sent us into the Grand Final against our rivals Nth Shore.

Like most coaches I had to make some tough decisions around selection for the grand final side and it was tough to tell guys they were not going to get a game. The Grand Final was a typical hard physical contest. The first quarter was an even contest and it just a point the difference at quarter time. In the second quarter North Shore kicked the first two goals and then we switched on and kicked the next 5 goals to open up a 21 point lead at half time. The rooms were relaxed at half time. The third quarter was like the first tight and physical and a goal each meant the margin was the same at the last change. 4 goals to 1 point in the last quarter was a great way finish the game.

To Brendan and the committee, thank you for giving me the opportunity to coach such a great group of young me who all love the club.

To Terry Mudge thanks for your ongoing support and all of your help over the past 3 years you have taught me so much.

To Gavin Raper, Kieran Donohue, Ben Merson and Damian Bruty thanks for all of your support during the season.

SYDNEY AFL RISING STAR AWARD NICK SHAW was nominated after Round 10 for the Sydney AFL Rising Star Award

“Nick Shaw is the product of the strong Sydney South Junior Competition having played a starring role in many premierships as part of a very strong Bangor Tigers team. Nick first came to St George as a top-up player for the U18‘s in 2012 making just the 1 appearance be-fore cementing himself as a permanent fixture across the midfield in a very strong Dragons U18 squad in 2013. His good form saw him also make several appearances in Division 1 before being selected to make his first grade debut, chalking up 2 appearances in Premier Division before season end. To cap off an already stellar year Nick was selected to play for the Swans Reserves against a very strong Brisbane Lions outfit and handled himself with aplomb in a heavily beaten team. After a strong 2014 preseason that saw Nick feature at the top of the time trial and agility tests, he has been a permanent fixture in the St George Premier Division side having played all 9 games this year. With elite endurance and speed his greatest attributes Nick has provided the Dragons with plenty of run and rebound and has been an integral part of the young Dragons outfit. Nick is just one of many young local juniors that the Dragons have nurtured and with the St George Academy now in full swing it is hoped he is the first of many more that go on to represent the Dragons in the Premier Division.”

DRAGONS CELEBRATE PAST SUCCESS DRAGONS SUCCESS By Caitlin Arnold

Fifty years of history will be on show this weekend at Olds Park as the St George Dragons host their annual “Back to St George Day” while their current Premier Division side take on the Western Suburbs Magpies.

Celebrating the 50 year reunion of the 1964 first grade premiership, the 40 year re-union of the 1974 Under 19s premiership and the 10 year reunion of the 2004 Under 18s premiership, Dragons President Brendan Donohue says that the club is looking forward to revisiting their past achievements. “It is our chance to have those involved and other supporters reminisce about their playing days and see what the present group can deliver” says Donohue. “It also gives us the opportunity to thank our sponsors, present our plans for the coming year and get the local politicians involved.”

In a big weekend for the Dragons, two club Life Members will reach major milestones as Jon Shineberg plays his 250th game and Shane Demir plays his 200th. As a club with a proven record of cultivating successful juniors and talent beyond its bounds, St George‘s 2014 campaign can only been seen as yet another step forward for the local, yet highly professional club.

With six Dragons selected across the Senior and Under 23 Sydney AFL Representative squads, it is clear that St George play a major role in the Sydney competition. As names that consistently pop up as sturdy performers, Bryce Addison, Karl Merson, and Alexander Wynn‘s selection in the Senior Representative side was a great thrill for the club, and for the players themselves. “The club fully supports the representative program as a means of showcasing the competition and the individuals, allowing them to test their skills. The players really want to be part of it and we see it as a vindication of what the club is trying to achieve - allowing everyone to be the best that they can be.”

Young guns Harrison Green, Tom Green, and Dominic Killworth were also chosen to display their talents for the Under 23s. As a club that prides itself on junior development, Donohue proudly notes that many of the top performers for St George this year are still in their teens or early twenties, providing a promising future for the club. “We have a very good group of young players including Karl Merson, Alexander Wynn, Ben Jones, Dominic Killworth and Thomas and Harrison Green, all of whom are 20 or younger.” It is unsurprising that St George have managed to blood as many outstanding players as they have, as their club academy continues to mould the malleable youth coming out of the local area. “Over the last two years St George has built a close association with all the local junior clubs through initiatives such as the St George Academy and having the junior clubs train at St George. Our Academy is working really well for us. Once a month we have 30-40 of the best local juniors training with our coaches. This not only demonstrates our coaching expertise to them but also makes them comfortable around the club and with our people. The test will be how many come to play at St George next season but we are very confident of a best ever retention of junior players through to the senior club.”

With three main pillars for long-term success outlined for the club in the coming years, the Dragons will look to improve on their already flourishing stance within Sydney AFL. Upgrading facilities remains a large priority for St George alongside building the club‘s coaching depth under the guise of Senior Coach, Terry Mudge. Continued development of their playing group is also a major goal for the Dragons who strive to produce talent worthy of the main AFL stage. “We want to give an AFL pathway to all who want to play the game. This involves our relationship with the Swans Reserves, the St George Academy and our junior clubs.”

Despite humbly beating the previously undefeated (for well over a year) Manly-Warringah in Round 12 of the Premier Division competition, Donohue admits that the Dragons still have a long way to go in terms of producing consistent football on par with the best of the best. However, with all signs St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2014 Annual Report 33

pointing to a fruitful future for the club, the St George Dragons look set to continue to breathe fire down the necks of the competition for quite some time.
