SYDNEY AFL FINALS WEEK 3 2016 — Article by Michael Shillito

The stakes were high on Sunday evening as St George took on North Shore in the Preliminary Final at Blacktown. For the winner, a spot in the Grand Final; for the loser, time to put the jumpers in mothballs for the off-season. But in the end, there was a clear gulf in class between the two teams and the game would end in a blowout.

St George had finished third after the regular season. A win over UTS and then a loss to East Coast had got them into the Prelim Final. For the last three years the Dragons’ season had ended in the Prelim Final; but this year they had hopes of it being fourth time lucky.

North Shore’s home and away season finished with them in fourth place; with wins over Pennant Hills and UTS getting them to the penultimate game of the season.

The Dragons burst out of the blocks in the opening minutes of the game, their lightning start mean- ing that North Shore would be forced to chase the game. Three goals in the first five minutes, as loose men were everywhere and the route to goal was uncluttered. The Bombers managed to tighten the game up after that, but the damage was done and the Dragons already had an impres- sive lead. Each side would score one more goal for the quarter; but the Dragons were holding an 18 -point advantage at the first change.

North Shore played better in the second half, but coming from behind was always going to be chal- lenging; and at no stage of the quarter were the Bombers able to take the lead. There was some attractive, running footy being played; and with North Shore putting in a good workrate during the second term were looking set to get themselves back into the contest. The Bombers won the quar- ter by four goals to two, and hopes were rising of a close finish.

But after being jumped at the start, the Bombers were again caught napping at the opening of the third quarter, as Paul Sain was left on his own within an easy kick at goal to take an uncontested mark and goal. Nick Ryan added another just a couple of minutes later; and all of North Shore’s hard work in the second quarter was undone.

North Shore had been major improvers in 2016, coming from a second-last finish last year to make it to the second last game of the season. But this was as far as their challenge would go. Having worked so hard all season, they had nothing more to give. Increasing numbers of Bomber players on the bench were sporting ice-packs; and a sense of inevitability of the end of the season had set in.

www.sydneyafl.com.au 8 Grand final—17th September 2016

It was four goals to one for the third term, with the Dragons’ lead out to 29 points at the last change. But the Bombers can be thankful for some missed Dragon shots at goal for being even that close. But the vibe had set in; and there was no doubt where this game was going.

The Dragons were on fire, the run of play on the field matched only by the St George crowd on the northern hill. Their ghetto blaster was pumping out the music after every Dragon goal, their raucous chorus of “I’d rather be in Baghdad than North Shore” the atmosphere in a final quarter that would be a Dragon benefit show.

North Shore would be disappointed in their final quarter capitulation, leading to what was their heaviest defeat of the season. But this was St George’s night, as they dominated all facets of the game during a one-sided term of footy. Finding loose men at will, and facing little more than token resistance, the goals flowed with regularity. Having fallen at the last hurdle in the quest for a Grand Final berth in the last three years in a row, a spot in the premiership decider was secure. And the one-sided final quarter will give them some handy momentum for next week’s match. In the end, it was ten goals to one for the quarter, with the Dragons taking out a comprehensive 85- point win. There were no shortage of players willing to step up and score goals; but the standout contributors on the forward line were Nick Ryan with five goals and Paul Sain with four. Around the ground, Ryan Mercer, Nick Shipley and Michael Milner featured prominently. But it was a subdued singing of the song in the rooms after the game; with the knowledge that the toughest test is still to come. Sam Carruthers, Will Bradley and Ned Campbell were best for the Bombers. But their season, one that had delivered some substantial success, is over.

And so we’re down to the last two teams. Next Saturday at Blacktown, East Coast Eagles will play St George for the right to hold the premiership silverware. The Eagles were top after the regular sea- son, and have beaten the Dragons three times this season already. But all of that counts for nothing unless they can win on Saturday. Will the Eagles be able to get the job done in the Grand Final, going one step further than last year, and drink from the premiership cup? Or will it be the Dragons to break a 24-year premiership drought? All will be revealed next Saturday.

This page is provided by the NSW Australian Football History Society. The Society’s aims are to preserve the memory of NSW football. Tomorrow this game you are at will become history. Who won this, why did they do that, what does that mean? The Society wants to preserve those memories. Your club can help by designating a club historian to work with the Society. As well you or the club can join, the details of which are on their website: www.nswfootballhistory.com.au SYDNEY FINALS As the season closes and so do the results, events and in some cases, participants. At 5:00pm all those things will then be- come dedicated to history.

So while the results turn to history let us not forget and that’s what the NSW Australian Football History Society attempts, to not so much retain, but record so that everyone has the opportunity of reading and acknowledging the respective achieve- ments.

Check out the Society’s new website: www.nswfootballhistory.com.au Football was first played in Sydney competitively from 1880 and but it wasn’t until nine years later that an actual competition, The Flanagan Cup was introduced. This also saw a structured competition with rules. Australian Football only lasted until 1894 when the Association folded. Finals like we know today were not played for a num- ber of years after the game was established in Sydney. Whoever finished at the top of the competition won the premiership. A real final series of a type was only after the introduction of the Flanagan Cup. Then, a ‘finals’ match was played at the end of the season to determine the premier but that was as far as it went. The game went into decline from 1895-1903 but was thankfully was revived with eleven first grade teams, nine seconds and in the that first decade in the 20th century, a flourishing schools competition in the first year of the revised competition.

Sydney football very much followed the VFL model and played an eight team final series in 1903-04 but then revised this to a final four in the following year. By then there were nine teams in the senior competition.

The manner of playoffs varied. Sometimes first place would play third and second versus fourth. The two winners would play off for the premiership however if they minor premier was defeated they had the right of a challenge replay. Positions were always based on win-loss record, with percentage as a tie-breaker. The VFL went through seven different finals scenarios between 1897-1924. Without the benefit of historical information it is difficult to say if Sydney followed suit, but they most probably did.

In 1931 the VFL introduced the Page-McIntyre finals system, where third played fourth in the first semi final (game 1), first played second in the second semi final (game 2). The winner of game 2 went straight into the grand final whilst the loser played the winner of game 1 (preliminary final). The winner of this match then played the winner of game 2 in the grand final.

They kept this system for the next 69 years. Sydney adopted the Page-McIntyre finals system in 1933

Today the grand final is played at Blacktown but what about before that. Where were the grand finals played? It would amaze you to read what grounds were used and one of the projects for the History Society is to list all the grounds used in NSW over the years.

One grand final early in the piece was played on Kensington Pony Track because all other grounds were unavailable because, for one reason or another, the season extended into October and the grounds were taken over by cricket.

Kensington Pony track is where the University of NSW is now located.

And yes someone will ask what was the biggest crowd at a Sydney AFL Grand Final? That is hard to say because when people did attend Sydney footy numbers, and that was PS (pre-Swans) in 1982. No firm figure were maintained about the numbers at games. There were some records kept by the League Secretary of the time as to gate takings but actual crowd numbers were more of a guess.

In 1963 the then League Secretary, Rhys Giddey told the press that over 11,000 attended the Trumper Park Grand Final. Many years later he announced the figure was vastly over estimated “but it all made for good reading.”

One thing is for sure, Sydney footy crowds certainly are not what they used to be.

The Phelan Medal is awarded to the AFL Sydney Premier Division player judged as the in a season on votes of the field umpires who cast 3, 2 & 1 votes at the com- pletion of each game. Unnamed the award was first presented in 1926 and then in 1932 tagged the “Provan Med- al” after the donor, Mr Aubrey D.S Provan, the President of the NSW AFL. In 1937 the name was changed to the Phelan Medal perpetuating the work of Mr James E Phelan (1860 – 1939) a man who devoted much of his lifetime to the interests of Australian Football in Sydney. VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR— BRIAN AND LORRAINE CLONEY

Brian and Lorraine Cloney have been involved with the Southern Power football clubs since 1997 and are the lifeblood of the club. The club would not be where it is today without these two wonderful servants of our great game.

During their 20 years, Brian has held just about every position within the football club, except President while Lorraine has been the ever reliable canteen manager during this time.

Both Brian and Lorraine have remain committed to the club, long after their sons finished playing and they have always been amongst the first to get to the ground each match-day morning and last to leave. They do all of this without fuss or request for thanks and fittingly the presitgous Club Man and Club Woman of the Year Awards are named in their honour.

It is also fitting that they are jointly awarded the AFL Sydney Volunteer of the Year Award for their service.

AFL SYDNEY LIFE MEMBER INDUCTEE— IAN PARKER

Ian’s involvement in the Sydney AFL scene spans more than 26 years, including 8 years at Westbrook Juniors and 18 years at Pennant Hills AFC. Ian’s contribution to the League as a leader of one of the most successful and well organised Club’s in Sydney is significant. Ian has taken on most roles at Pennant Hills Football Club during his time at the Demons and there is a not a single part of the clubs administration today that has not been due to the work of Ian Parker.

A familiar and popular face around AFL Sydney, Ian has given up his own time to assist as a timekeeper for the league, has been a recipient of the AFL’s prestigious Merit Award, is a Life Member of the Pennant Hills Demons Football Club and it is only fitting that tonight he be inducted as an AFL Sydney Life Member thanks to the signifi- cant contribution he has made to the league.

www.sydneyafl.com.au 18 Grand final—17th September 2016 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE—SYD FELSTEAD

Born in 1919, Syd’s involvement in Sydney football began in 1938 when he arrived at St George AFC where he went on to play 128 senior games. His most significant contribution to Australian Rules Football however was off the field with St George including being Club president for an amazing 20 year from 1955 to 1974. His contribution to the development of local junior Aussie Rules cannot be underestimated and he was instrumental in the acquisition of Olds Park as an AFL venue, the ground which the Dragons still play at.

A Hall of Fame and Life Member of St George AFC, it is only fitting that Syd be inducted into the AFL Sydney Hall of Fame for his contribution over many years to our great game.

Ben has risen from the successful under 19 team that won back to back titles in Wests won back to back in 2014 and 2015 to push for a spot in Wests premier division team.

Ben played representative football in the juniors before gaining a spot in the Academy as an under 15 year old. After a number of seasons interrupted by injury, 2015 was Ben's first full season of senior footy.

Still only 18 years of age Ben has shown some glimpses of brilliance in the trial matches and Wests first game against Sydney Uni where he bagged 5 goals and a spot on the Sydney AFL team of week. However his finest per- formance so far happened in Round 4 when Ben kicked 4 Goals in the ANZAC Day clash against Pennant Hills.

Congrats Ben from everyone at AFL Sydney!

2016 AFL SYDNEY WOMENS RISING STAR—

Angela played with Auburn last year as a junior permit player and has signed on this year as a permanent senior player. Despite being one of the youngest players in Premier Division, Angela has an outstanding footballresumé, repre- senting Sydney Harbour and NSW/ACT numerous times, and last year being selected as an U18 All Australian. Her maturity, support for her team mates, dedication to training, and commitment to the improvement of her team has seen her appointed captain for the 2016 season. Precision and determination allow Angela compete, and win, against larger and more experienced opponents. While spending most of her time as a rover, usually contributing the majority of our inside 50s in a match, she is also able to kick goals on the run, competes well in the air, and is also known to try and sneak into ruck contests when she is first to the stop- page.

Angela is a gifted young footballer whose remarkable abilities will continue to grow over the season, as she gains valuable experience playing against the best female footballers in AFL Sydney.

www.sydneyafl.com.au 25 Grand Final—17th September 2016 EAST COAST NOTES

Season 2016 has been a varied one for East Coast. Whilst our performances in the lower divisions have been less than satisfactory, the Premier Division side sealed a second top of the ladder finish at the end of the minor round. The reward was a week off before de- feating St George in the second semi-final to head straight to today’s Grand Final where we will meet the Dragons for the fourth time this season. The match score sees the Eagles with a 3-0 win record, but as all sporting teams know, Grand Finals are won and lost on the day.

Our premium sponsors in 2016 have been marvellous. All have given their full support to the Club since coming on board after our departure from the NEAFL. Vesta Homes, Stone- masons & Landscapers, Mansfield Corporation, Jatec Trucking, KFC, the Fiddler and last, but by no means least, our ground naming rights sponsor in Kanebridge Limited. Thankyou so much for your loyalty and confidence in the Eagles to be able to return to AFL Sydney football and be competitive in a very strong league in 2016.

To all those players who give up so much of their time to play footy with the Eagles, we thank you too. Most of you will be here today to cheer on the Michael Sankey’s First Grade boys as they pursue the quest to win the Club’s fourth Premier Division premiership. To our members and supporters we express our thanks to you all for your continued alle- giance to the Eagles and we invite everybody to return to the Fiddler tonight from 7.00pm for the Club’s post Grand Final function.

And finally please keep the date of Saturday evening October 22nd free in your diaries for the always great event at the East Coast Eagles Club Champion night in the Atrium Room at the Castle Hill RSL Club.
