Round 10 - 16 June 2018 2 Round 10 - 16 June 2018 39 www.bdafl.com.au www.bdafl.com.au PREVIEW—ROUND 10 BARTV MATCH OF THE WEEK

In the Hunter Haval Black Diamond Cup Round 10 fixtures on Saturday, Bombers legend Dane Amidy plays his historic 300th First Grade for Killarney Vale as they host Central Coast rivals Gosford at Adelaide St Oval; Nel- son Bay, after a heart-stopping win over Wyong Lakes last week, have a massive clash against ladder rivals Singleton at Dock Burwell Oval; Warners Bay host Lake Macquarie at Feighan Park; Wyong Lakes have a must- win fixture at Max McMahon Oval in Rutherford against tenth-placed Maitland; and in the match of the season so far, fierce rivals and league heavyweights Terrigal Avoca and Newcastle City do battle in the BARTV Match of the Round at Hylton Moore Oval. Cardiff has the Bye. In the BARTV Match of the Round great rivals and the dominant force of the BDAFL over the past decade, Terrigal Avoca & Newcastle City, do battle in what will be a pivotal fixture if the winner of this game can knock off Cardiff later this season. City have been terrific since a close Round 1 loss at Hillsborough. Patrick Gillingham has been in scintillating form up forward for City, and who Panthers Coach Chris Bishop elects to start on Gillingham will be fascinating, given Gillingham’s speed and ground level skills. Youngsters Reed van Huisstede and Max Quinlan are showing the City hierarchy that they are definitely up to City’s very high Cup standards, with the return of talented ruckman Chris Jackson (knee) a great boost for influential Blues followers Conor Haswell and veteran Mitchell Knight. The Panthers have been unstoppable in recent weeks and just love playing against Newcastle City. The sublime James Webster, hobbled over the last 12 months with a debilitating knee injury, has found his best form and that spells trouble for the entire competition, not just City. With Jasper Davis performing much of the ruckwork around the ground, Bishop has been able to free up Sam Ellis to go forward, to good effect. Although Lachlan White (ankle) is a long-term injury, Bishop has plenty of options through the midfield, including repre- sentative rover Jack Grimmond, Bishop himself and Sam O’Brien. How the Panthers back six manage City’s potent forward line will be ket to the outcome of the contest. Killarney Vale celebrate their fortieth anniversary and Amidy’s 300th First Grade game in a very important fixture for both clubs. Gosford have four wins so far this season and Killarney Vale three, so this pivotal Round 10 clash is hugely important for both teams’ aspirations of finishing inside the Top and indeed in the Top 5, thereby avoid- ing League powerhouses Cardiff, Terrigal Avoca and Newcastle City in the first round of the finals. The return of veteran full- forward Bryce Singleton has been massive for Bombers Coach Scott Reed. With Singleton playing out of the square, this has freed Reed up to alternate between centre-half forward and ruck-rover, often to devastating effect. The continuous improve- ment of League ruckman Tim Oosterhoff, a fully fit Josh Mifsud, Singleton’s influence and the class of Kyall Walford give Reed much optimism of a Finals berth after a tough couple of seasons at Adelaide St. The Tigers will have circled this date as a fixture vitally important to their chances of finishing fifth or higher on the ladder. The expected return of Tigers Coach Josh Barty will be key for the Tigers to provide a second target up forward next to key forward Tim Eather. Follower Daniel White has been excel- lent all season for the Tigers, alongside the versatile Tim Paavola and Lewis Baker. Nelson Bay, who restored faith and confidence with a great, come-from-behind victory over Wyong Lakes last Saturday, host Singleton in a huge fixture at Dick Burwell Oval. This Weeks Broadcast match Billy Barton has been a shining light in the ruck all year for Coach Sean McGrath, and the timely return from illness of stars Jay- Terrigal Avoca vs Newcastle City den Rymer and Chris Eddy could not have come at a better time for Nelson Bay as they seek a return to finals footy. Mark Spen- cer’s four goals last week were massive, and the addition of rugged Andrew Last has given McGrath a solid presence around the Watch the match live, or on replay at: ground. Singleton, after an away win last week, head to the Tomaree Peninsula knowing they must win to keep their hopes of a www.bdafl.com.au Top 5 finish well and truly alive. Follower Sam Brasington and lively utility Cam White have been in very good form over the last Subway Player of the Match—Rd 9 month, with Brasington sure to enjoy the wide open spaces at Dick Burwell Oval. Coach Andrew Scott is has been simply superb over the past month, both in the centre for his Roosters and at representative level. Warners Bay, who were looking at having 12 N/A players out last week before a timely wet weather cancellation, have had good news on the injury front, with only Josh Rainieri likely to be a long-term casualty. Despite missing ruck-rover Jake Roach (wedding) this Saturday, coach Marty Reiman has an excellent back six led by Linc Stewart and Lachlan Deverell, a solid midfield led by Ben Hunter, Nick Turner, Matt Spinks and Jack Hardman, with Kayne Gibbs hopeful of a return up front this week. Lake Macquarie has a talented top of younger players, led by Damon Tually and Riley Janissen. A lack of depth has hurt the Dockers all season, with Daniel Zuzek and Oliver Bunny consistent SOCIAL MEDIA contributors all season for coach Tom Croft. Wyong Lakes have a crucial away fixture in Rutherford as they play the struggling, injury-depleted Maitland Saints. Fullback Carter Jones, rover Leigh Moore and ruckmen Brendan Charlton & Brayden Tos have consistent all year for Michael Tos, especially in the long absence of Chris Koop-Folkes (cheekbone). Key forward Justin McPhan has struggled all year with a persistent leg injury and his four goals last week was a positive sign for the Magpies moving forward. The Saints had a tough day last week at East Gosford against a rampant, ruthless Panthers outfit, and will look forward to the familiar environs of Max McMahon Oval this week. Andrew Wilmott and Mitch Greaves, along with Dylan Bennett, have shown good form as the Saints have had a wretched run of injuries and unavailability. In the GE Womens Competition, the first ever w w w. b d a fl . co m . a u Port Stephens derby takes place at Dick Burwell Oval, with the Marlins hosting the Port Stephens Power. Killarney Vale are at home to Gosford in a crucial match for both sides, hopeful of finals berths; Wallsend-West Newcastle are at home to Cardiff; Warners Bay host Lake Macquarie at Feighan Park; the Newcastle City Novas head to East Gosford to play hosts Terrigal Avoca; The Entrance Bateau Bay head to Rutherford to play the Maitland Saints; the undefeated Newcastle City Stars host Singleton at No.1 Sportsground and Wyong Lakes make the journey to Weeraman Field to play the Muswellbrook Cats. Round 10 - 16 June 2018 38 Round 10 - 16 June 2018 3 www.bdafl.com.au www.bdafl.com.au AMIDY PLAYS 300TH FIRST GRADE GAME

This weekend will see Killarney Vale celebrate a significant mile- stone not just for the clubs (40 year anniversary) but also one of their favoured sons, Dane “Draino” Amidy who will play his 300th 1st Grade game for the club and which will also see him overtake club legend Peter Kelleher’s record of 366 club games.

'Draino' came to the Bombers in 1993 as an U17s player. In 1995 the spritely 17 year old kid won the Central Coast AFL Reserve Grade Best & Fairest award and a Reserve Grade Premiership.

In 1996 and 1997 Draino won a scholarship and attended the Carey Baptist Grammar College in Melbourne. Draino returned to the club in 1998 and was part of the Bomber 1st Grade Prem- iership side, before spending the 1999 season in the Tamworth AFL where he played in the representative team that year.

Draino again returned to the club in 2000 and has become a regular 1st Grader for the club since.

Throughout his career, Draino has proven an elusive midfielder / forward who has racked up a good tally of goals over the years. Draino was a key member of the clubs 2007 Premiership side.

Now, 25 years since his arrival, Draino will become the clubs games record holder.

During this time Draino has won two 1st Grade , has been three times Runner Up, won two 1st Grade and one Reserve Grade Premiership, represented the League on six occasions and was named in the Bomb- ers 30 year ‘All Star’ team in 2008. Draino was made a Life Member of the Killarney Vale Australian Football Club in 2013 and a Life Member of the Black Diamond AFL in 2016.

Draino’s milestone is not the only milestone that the club will celebrate this week with Scott Reid (below right) to play his 350th game for the club and Justin Daley (below left) his 250th game for the club.

We congratulate them on their achievements and wish them all the best for the day.

Round 10 - 16 June 2018 4 Round 10 - 16 June 2018 37 www.bdafl.com.au www.bdafl.com.au KILLARNEY VALE, 40 YEARS YOUNG

This weekend Killarney Vale Bombers will be holding their 40th anniversary. Former players and officials are converging on Adelaide Street from Friday to Sunday with a formal dinner to be held at the Diggers Club, Long Jetty on Satur- day Evening. There, the club will conduct an ‘On the Coach’ interview with the three players who have gone onto the AFL: Mark & Jarrad McVeigh along with recent GWS recruit, Daniel Lloyd. The Club will also be naming their best players over the past 40 years in a cere- mony at the function. As a background to Killarney Vale we bring you a bit of their history. Football was first played here on the Central Coast in 1971 when enthusiasts formed a club at Gosford. Initially there were going to play in the Sydney second division but changed their minds and affiliated with the Newcastle League. They built the side up and to a first and reserve grade club. Initially they played Avoca Oval, then when the tip site at Adcock Park, Woy Woy was filled and prepared they played their last one of two years there. In late 1975 they decided to withdraw from the Newcastle League and form their own competition. The club at that time had players from all over the Coast. From Woy Woy to Toukley so a meeting was held at the Gosford Sailing Club to form five separate clubs. Gosford, Narara-Wyoming, Terrigal, Woy Woy and The Lakes or Wyong as it later became. There were several meetings in and around the Entrance/Killarney Vale area to get a team off the ground but received little or virtually no support. Bowing to pressure if not encouragement, late in 1977 posters were stuck in shop windows and businesses along The Entrance Road from the intersection of Wyong Road. A meeting to form the Killarney Vale club was held in late October with about a dozen people turning up. Most of them stayed and many played in the first year and some in the second of the club but by then they were not exactly young men. Nevertheless, they filled the ranks. An under 17 junior team was formed a few months later. While the club have always trained at Adelaide Street, for the first two years they played their home games at Don Small Oval, formerly known as Tacoma Oval, Wyong’s home ground. At that stage there was adjacent rugby field and soccer fields running north south on the Adelaide Street venue. Following negotiations with Council and the Rugby club, Killarney Vale played their first game at Adelaide Street in 1980 and had the Mayor of the Wyong Shire, Tim Farrell, bounce the ball to start the match. And now the rest is history.

Round 10 - 16 June 2018 36 Round 10 - 16 June 2018 5 www.bdafl.com.au www.bdafl.com.au FIVE BDAFL WOMEN NAMED IN GIANTS SQUAD

Pippa Smyth has no doubt there is plenty of talent in the Black Dia- mond AFL women’s competition. Opportunity, however, to showcase that talent has been limited. But a new second-tier representative series is set to propel three more Hunter-developed players into the eyes of AFLW selectors. Last year, 22-year-old Smyth became the first woman drafted to the national league from BDAFL when she was picked up by the GWS Giants. Now, she is one of four Hunter- grown players selected for the Northern Giants to contest the inau- gural AFLW Winter Series for north-eastern states. Her former Nel- son Bay teammate Lisa Steane, who is now playing alongside Smyth for Macquarie University in the Sydney competition, plus Newcastle City pair Meghan MacDonald and Sarah Halvorsen are also in the squad. Reigning, BDAFL Women's Best & Fairest winner Alison Par- kin, now with UNSW/ES has also been included. The squad trains together over a two-month period and features 12 AFLW listed play- ers, including , Ellie Brush, Erin McKinnon and . Their first of three games is against the at Tom Wills Oval on Saturday. They also play the and Southern Giants throughout the series. “There’s as much talent in Sydney as there is in Black Diamond, it’s just a bit more developed I suppose,” Smyth said. “There’s enough talent in the Black Diamond AFL, they just need exposure. They’ve just got to get to know of them and watch them, so this is perfect for that. “For me, this winter is just about developing as a player and in other positions.” Steane has been a stand-out player in the Hunter-Central Coast competition since it began and has relocated to Sydney to pursue her dream of playing at the elite level. The 23-year-old plans to make the most of any game time in the winter series. “A lot of us for have been com- plaining for a while that we don’t really get many opportunities to play at a higher level,” Steane said. “It’s just such a perfect opportunity for that. “In ACT and NSW we don’t get a lot of exposure, we don’t have a lot of representative football and the level isn’t as high as the VFL, so I think this is a really good stepping stone.” Seeing Smyth drafted for the Giants was also pivotal for Steane, who was GWS a train-on player in the first AFLW season. “There were so many times I heard people say, ‘They don’t look at the Black Diamond’, and ‘No one is going to get picked from the Black Diamond, we’re too far out and don’t have enough exposure’,” Steane said. “Then she got picked and it gave everyone hope. She put in so much work and so much effort. If you put the work in then you can get rewarded.” Smyth, Steane and 29-year-old MacDonald have all played AFL since the Black Diamond women’s competition began in 2015 with six teams. Twenty-two-year-old Halvorsen, who is also a stand- out rugby sevens player, is in just her second season. “Already, just that experience at a higher level of coaching has been really good,” Halvorsen said. “The girls are a really good standard down there, so it’s just good getting the experience and improving my own game. “At the moment, I’m just seeing where it takes me and not getting ahead of myself.” Parkin, who won the 2017 BDAFL Women’s Best & Fairest award, returned to AFL Sydney this year after two years with Gosford in the BDAFL with the aim of being drafted by the Giants, and she is pleased to have taken the first step to achieving her goal. The BDAFL women’s league has swelled to 16 teams this year and football operations manager Garry Burkinshaw said the winter series was a “fantastic opportunity” for the four players but was also “a little disappointed at we didn’t get more named”. “The Giants are running it, so if Alison, Sarah and Meaghan, Lisa and Pippa have strong series, then that puts them right in under the nose of [AFLW] selectors,” Burkinshaw said. Burkinshaw said there would also be a new BDAFL women’s representative tri -series contested at Medowie next month between Newcastle, Central Coast and Hunter sides.

This great initiative is driven by a local committee of volunteers partnering with the Newcas- tle City Blues (AFL) and FightMND. The aim is to raise funds to find a cure for MND, along with building awareness and having fun at the same time! Big Freeze Newcastle will take place at Newcastle’s Number 1 Sports Ground on Saturday 23rd June. There will be AFL games, a parade of runners com- pleting a run, and other fun activities. Of course, the main event is the giant slide leading straight into a pool of ice water, where approximately 20 local personalities, who have committed to raise $5,000 each, will be dunked for their commitment to freeze MND. Over $100,000 raised so far!
