What a Start to the Year for Swan CHAMPION/DATA/ISSUE 2 Hi and welcome to the second edition of the Fantasy Freako’s rave for 2011. Regardless of how you’re faring after two rounds, this is the week to offload the underperformers and snap up those boom cash cows. If you’ve nailed your side and have all cash cows playing and performing well, then there’s no need to trade just for the sake of it. Conserve your trades and use them only when needed. Good luck to all coaches for the upcoming round, as it will be the last head-to-head round for three weeks. WHAT A START TO THE YEAR FOR SWAN If you took the captain’s arm band off Dane Swan last week, then you would have felt sick in the guts when he came out an racked up a lazy 18 disposals in the second term against the Kangaroos – the most ever recorded in a second quarter. If you were playing against him, you would have felt even worse. His start to the season has been remarkable, collecting 34 and 40 disposals from his first two games, scoring 137 and 162 points respectively. This gives you an average of 149 points per match and we have to go back to 1989 to find a more productive Dream Team start to the year. That year big Tony Lockett let loose, scoring nine goals and 153 points in Round 1 against the Brisbane Bears and he followed it up with another 10 goals and 160 points the following week against Carlton. Average DT points in first two rounds since 2000 NOT BUDDY GOOD ENOUGH! Season Player Club D M T G Pts I think we all agree that there is no better player to watch when on song than Lance Franklin.     Scandals in sport AN ACCOMPANIMENT TO ON THE TAKE TONY JOEL AND MATHEW TURNER Contemporary Histories Research Group, Deakin University February 2020 he events that enveloped the Victorian Football League (VFL) generally and the Carlton Football Club especially in September 1910 were not unprecedented. Gambling was entrenched in TMelbourne’s sporting landscape and rumours about footballers “playing dead” to fix the results of certain matches had swirled around the city’s ovals, pubs, and back streets for decades. On occasion, firmer allegations had even forced authorities into conducting formal inquiries. The Carlton bribery scandal, then, was not the first or only time when footballers were interrogated by officials from either their club or governing body over corruption charges. It was the most sensational case, however, and not only because of the guilty verdicts and harsh punishments handed down. As our new book On The Take reveals in intricate detail, it was a particularly controversial episode due to such a prominent figure as Carlton’s triple premiership hero Alex “Bongo” Lang being implicated as the scandal’s chief protagonist. Indeed, there is something captivating about scandals involving professional athletes and our fascination is only amplified when champions are embroiled, and long bans are sanctioned. As a by-product of modernity’s cult of celebrity, it is not uncommon for high-profile sportspeople to find themselves exposed by unlawful, immoral, or simply ill-advised behaviour whether it be directly related to their sporting performances or instead concerning their personal lives. Most cases can be categorised as somehow relating to either sex, illegal or criminal activity, violence, various forms of cheating (with drugs/doping so prevalent it can be considered a separate category), prohibited gambling and match-fixing.

In the club’s victory over Sydney in the 2006 AFL Grand Final he was awarded the Norm Smith Medal as the best player on the ground. Andrew is a very approachable and engaging speaker who draws on the potent parallels between business and sport in his presentations. He knows what it takes to be part of a successful team and understands the effort and determination required to rebuild an organisation. He understands the importance of having strong leadership as well as how to form and implement a vision to ensure that any team or organisation is aligned to the goals they want to achieve. Outside football Andrew has a passion for food and is high profile as a celebrity chef. He hosts his own degustation nights called ‘Cooking with Embers’ which have become extremely popular with West Coast Eagles fans and corporate clients and he also in demand for cooking demonstrations at events. He is an apprentice chef at Beluga, a restaurant in the Claremont Quarter, which he co- owns with West Coast Eagles team member Dean Cox. The nI ternational World of Sport and the Liability for Off-Field Indiscretions Abstract The recent terminations of the contracts of NRL player, Joel Monaghan and the AFL’s Brendan Fevola, for off-field indiscretions, has highlighted the significance of the bringing the game into disrepute clauses contained in standard player contracts. Tiger Woods’ extra-marital affairs received extensive world wide media attention, and the outcome of this negative coverage was the loss of millions of dollars in sponsorship deals. This indicates that such contracts can be terminated on the basis that a sportsperson’s behaviour was having a negative impact on the sponsor’s image. It is for the same reason that sponsors have put pressure on the governing bodies of team sports to take appropriate action for off-field indiscretions. The Court of Arbitration in D’Arcy v Australian Olympic Committee, has also held that a competitor’s behaviour in an incident where criminal charges were laid, may, in itself be sufficient to bring a sport, or themselves, into disrepute, regardless of whether the competitor is later found guilty or innocent.
