The AFL Sydney Round 3 Rising Star nominee is Campbell Luscombe of Pennant Hills.

In 2013, he graduated to the Senior Club and played two seasons and 35 games of under -age footy. He was a member of the 2013 Under 18 Division 1 premiership side which he regards as the highlight of his footy career so far. His coaches have described Campbell as a consistently high performer with a high work rate and strong attack on the footy.

Campbell made his Premier Division debut in Round 1 this season, aged 18, against St George. This game and the round 2 clash against 2014 Premiers Manly, were stirring come-from-behind victories, a fantastic initiation for the debutante. Campbell admitted to a nervous excitement in his first game, a condition made worse when one of his team- mates suffered a broken limb in the first minutes of the match and an hours delay be- fore he had the opportunity to take the field.

Premier Division Coach, Chris Yard, is pleased that Campbell has quickly made the step- up from under-age footy to the higher intensity of senior football. Playing mainly on the wing, he has pace and a willingness to put his head over the ball. In the round 3 match against Western Suburbs Campbell got lots of game time, took several marks and double -figures in possessions. So far, Campbell has acquitted himself well and is developing into a valuable addition to the senior side. Expect to see a lot more of Campbell in games to come.

AFL SYDNEY WOMENS ROUND 2 RISING STAR

The Round 2 Rising Start nominee is Kiona Vance from Macquarie Uni- versity.

Kiona ‘Keys’ Vance is an 18 year old from Perth, who previously played with the Joondalup Falcons in the Junior Womens competition. After an impressive showing throughout pre-season training, Kiona made her senior debut for the Warriors on April 18 against Newtown Breakaways at University Oval. The first round saw a lot of debutants take to the field and Kiona attacked the ball relentlessly, communicated perfectly and was a superb role model for the other rookies. She has brought extra defensive pressure to the table for the Warriors Womens team.

Having already shown much promise in round 1, in round 2 against Southern Power, Kiona showed great poise and skill while gathering many contested possessions and crucial marks, assisting the Warriors in a solid win. Kiona was named among the team’s best players on the day. Highlights include numerous vital marks polished off with accurate delivery to the mid field- ers and forward line. The Warriors look forward to helping Kiona develop her football skills and knowledge throughout 2015.

Four unanswered goals and a 25-point margin was already a break too big for the Bulldogs to a chance to recover from. The second quarter would be similar. The Bulldogs didn’t get enough of the ball to launch any sort of sustained pressure, and for much of the quarter it looked too big an ask to even get the ball inside the attacking 50 metre line. Meanwhile at their attacking end, the Giants were scoring goals with enough regularity to compound the opposition’s scoring deficit. With a return of five goals to one in the second term, the margin was a comfortable 46 point lead at half time. The relentless pressure that forces turnovers and sees scoring chances created with regularity continued in the third term. At times the Bulldogs would look like finally breaking the shackles, and they did manage three goals for the quarter. But the Giants had all the answers with six goals of their own; and it could have been even more but for some wasteful finishing in front of goal. But with a 72-point lead at the last change, it was clear that this would be a day to celebrate for the defending champions. www.sydneyafl.com.au www.sydneyafl.com.au 8 29 Round 4 - 2nd—3th May Round 4 - 2nd—3th May CLUB NOTES ROUND 3 REVIEW After pulling off an unlikely comeback in the first round and then being defeated last week, this was the first chance this season for NEWTOWN the Giants to record a big win; and with the Bulldogs on the ropes, they weren’t going to let this chance slip by. Campbelltown 68 Manly Warringah 68 Seniors fronted up at Picken Oval for the traditional ANZAC Day match against Western Sub- urbs. Penno was 2 & 0, Wests 0 & 2 going into the round 3 clash, but nothing was being taken for granted.

Western Suburbs 60 UNSW 62 After a poignant pause to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign of WWI, the footy got underway in warm and sunny conditions. Despite an early goal by Wests, assisted by the first of a number of 50m st St George 52 Cronulla Sutherland 56 penalties, the Demons got out of the blocks well and at the 1 change were up 5 goals to 1. Penno appeared to have control of the game at this stage and a big win was in anticipation. To their credit, Wests stepped up their defence in the 2nd term and the match became an arm wrestle. The Dee’s added a single goal in the 2nd quarter North Shore 44 Wollongong 52 and kept Wests goal-less. The margin at ½ time was now 5 goals to Penno. Wests had their best period in the third quarter, out-scoring the Dees 3 goals to 2. The margin was 4 goals at the final change and one sensed Pennant Hills 32 Hawkesbury 40 Penno was probably home with the final term still to be run. When Nick Hey kicked a goal in the opening moments th of the 4 quarter, victory seemed likely, however, an immediate response from Wests kept the game alive. Holroyd Parramatta 24 Bankstown 32 Penno’s defence remained resolute, as they made scoring by the opposition difficult all day. King Carey had his silky skills on display and was a potent target up forward, kicking 4 goals and was best on ground. The Dees ran Sydney University 20 Liverpool Anzacs 24 the game out to the final siren, finishing with 7 goals to 2 in the last, the final margin just shy of 10 goals. Go Bombers!!! considered to be far under that to cover expenses after the Ballarat press first suggested the attendance might top 15,000.

The party of forty Roosters players and their fans travelled to Sydney by coach. The players were accom- modated in the Olympic Hotel, Moore Park Road, Paddington while the supporters were quartered in the Sir John Young Hotel, corner of Liverpool and George Streets, Sydney. They were lavishly entertained firstly by an official reception at the Sydney Town Hall and later a harbour cruise together with official dinners and bar-b-ques.

An added attraction to the game, was the inclusion of Hawthorn captain, Graham “Mort” Arthur, in the Newtown team wearing jumper number 21 – just for the day. A series of athletic events were held before and at half time of the match. Olympians, including long distance runner, Ron Clarke and sprinter, Bobby Lay, the Australian 100 yard champion, were amongst those who participated.

Newtown had won the premiership the previous year under the guidance of former VFL and Tasmanian footballer, Gordon Bowman who was still in charge in 1968. North Ballarat, on the other hand, had failed to make the four in the Ballarat Football League in 1967 but this was soon redressed.

The game was played in relatively hot weather which taxed the Victorian players and at the same time had a severe effect on the Newtown side who had only just started training a few weeks before. North though, had undertaken one of the most strenuous early training schedules seen in Ballarat.

They ran out victors in a close and ‘firey clash’ 12.8 (80) to 9.14 (68). The crowd attendance was not as high as expected, however there was so much enthusiasm, a return match was promised for the following year. The game was a forerunner to success for the Roosters who finished runner-up in their competition in 1968 to Maryborough. Newtown also had a great year and took out their second successive premier- ship.
