St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated - 2018 Annual Report 4 PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Season 2018 was a mixture of sweet and sour. After the on-field successes of season 2018, it was quickly evident that the general results would not be replicated. Off-filed the club goes from strength to strength.

At pre-season the number of players not returning from the previous year told us that we would be back into the re-build phase which turned out to be the case. But we did field 5 sides and had the addition of a wonderful Masters sided which not only won the Premiership but more importantly re engaged a large numb er of players back to the club. Also we started the development of the womens side with very promising results.

Off field with the Council engaging a full time groundsman the field was the envy of the competition and for that matter most field sports in the area. It is a credit to the Council and the groundsman. In addition with the success of the Red & White 90th Anniversary Ball and the provision of catering at the AFL Blacktown finalsd series, the club is in a sound financial position to start season 2019.

I again acknowledge the wonderful contribution that both Enid and Danny Dwyer and the St George Masos have made financially in season 2018 and over a number of years previously. Long may their involvement continue. I also thank the Guthrie family from Mortgage Choice, Glenn Jones from President Body Repairs, Mracia Sterling, Chris Raper and Chris Ryan.

This year we welcomed a new sponsor being Sura who specialize in insurance underwriting.Angie Zissis was instrumental in arranging this partnership and it is one that we hope will last for many years.

Our coaching staffled by Club Coach Terry Mudge and supported by Derek waters, Stephen Wilsen, Gavin Raper, Lachlan Ryan, and Warren Tegg deserve high praise for their dedication and ability to teach. Support from Football Manager Andrew Wynn and his team of Kev Wilsen, John Addison, Ian Ford, Tom Cleray and Dale Widders was delivered every week. The professional behavior from our physio staff led by Michael Koutzoumis and their team made us the envy of most clubs..

The introduction of the Masters side I believe was a great success mainly due to the work of David Fletcher, Shane Demir and Noel Hopkins.

Our Vice-President Andrew Wynn continues to expand and improve the St George Academy looking after both Under 17 and Under 15 juniors in the St George area. I hope that we can expand this for our female juniuors. Thank you also to all of his helpers.

We do have a small but hard working inner circle of volunteers. Chief amongst those is Kerry Wynn who beside being the club photographer was instrumental in organizing the Red & White Ball which along with the Annual Golf Day are major contributors to our finanaes. The latter event was run by Nath Mackenzie Hicks and he also organized the Comedy Night.

Also thanks to David Lycakis who published our weekly newsletter and Angie Zissis and Dale Widders for keeping our ground well marked.

Mentioned must be made of Marion Sterling Richard Orton who were joined by Kerry Wynn on Friday mornings before home matches. They scrubbed and polished the showers, toilets, change rooms and main club area and did a wonderful and often unacknowledged job.

We were blessed with our canteen ladies, Patricia Jones and Maureen Ford with help from Richard Orton. Not only do they organize a financially successful canteen but they engender a spirit of fun and co-operation into the clubhouse. Thank you to all of you and your helpers.

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated - 2018 Annual Report 5 This year we were given the huge task of providing canteen service for the AFL Finals series at Blacktown. This was a huge undertaken that was very successful. The leaders of the planning were Paul Dawson, Angie Zissis, Richard Orton and Dale Widders. The canteen was run by Kate Lee, Trish Jones and Maureen Ford and we were blessed with the best turn out of volunteers in my time at the club. Thanks to everyone.

If I have forgotten any volunteers please accept that my dementia is increasing and the oversight was unintended.

To all of the committee members who run the club in a most professional and unobtrusive way. We certainly need more volunteers to help you but what you do is most appreciated.

Finally thanks to the players and your partners and families. I am sure that you would have felt an increased demand on your time and effort.

And now it is time to say thanks and good bye.

Brendan Donohue President

VICE-PRESIDENT'S REPORT My main focus as VP for the last 5 years has been to support Brendan to ensure the long term viability & success of St. George AFC. In particular focusing on junior club and player liaison so as to attract more players to the club, with the ultimate goal of running more teams at St. George. So it was very pleasing that we were able to maintain our 2nd U 19 team and our 3rd senior team in Div 2 thanks in particular to the hard work of Tom Cleary and Lachy Ryan.

The St. George Academy once again ran well, thanks to the coaching support of Gavin Raper & Alexander Wynn. Numbers were. not as strong this year due to fewer junior clubs having U15s teams. Plus maybe it is a sign of the times of how busy people are these days that we did not have as many players signing up in the initial intake. However the sessions were well regarded by those that attended. One pleasing aspect was to see former Academy players represented in all 5 St George teams at various stages this year.

Other activities that I was able to support across the year included Red & White Ball, Comedy for a Cause, finals catering at Blacktown, and supporting Warren with U19s Div 2.

Late last year Brendan and I were involved with a number of discussions with Sydney AFL regarding the future structure for Sydney AFL including the Player Points System, U19s competitions structure, and senior competition structure. It was pleasing to see that a number of the ideas we proposed were incorporated in their plan.

Congratulations to all the teams for strong seasons, and with a steady flow of juniors coming to the club in the ensuing years the future is very bright for St. George AFC.

ANDREW WYNN VICE-PRESIDENT 2018

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated - 2018 Annual Report 6 SECRETARY'S REPORT As we close out 2018, we review another year of growth both on and off the field. A formal note of thanks to all those who supported the club both on and off the field in 2018. To the Committee, our coaches, playing group and countless volunteers who ensure the club runs successfully. A brief reflection upon some key highlights for the 2018 season: We saw the inaugural Sydney AFL Masters Competition launched and successfully won by St George AFC. This was our only on field premiership success in 2018 which was a credit to David Fletcher, Noel Hopkins and Shane Demir in bringing together a lot of familiar and new faces to St George who truly embodied the DNA spirit of the club. This also saw David Fletcher formally recognised within the broader Sydney AFL circles with winning a "Volunteer of the Year" award. A tradition has begun, and now a legacy to protect.

Off the field, the club successfully delivered the Finals canteen catering which was a lucrative exercise. The hard work or Tricia Jones, Margaret Ford, Kate Lee, Paul Dawson, Angie Zissis and Dale Widders to name just a few of those who were the driving force behind the success. A large number of volunteers who gave up their weekends to ensure the success are duly noted and formally thanked. This is a great representation of our offfield Dragons DNA.

Our 90 Year celebration was held in 2018. We are a proud club with a proud history and Kerry Wynn and her team pulled together a fabulous event celebrating the historyof the club. Thank you Kerry and team in delivering a truly fantastic event. An event that celebrated our Dragons DNA.

You will see a theme, Dragons DNA. The cornerstone to who we are, how we operate and what we represent. As we move into 2019 we will face further growth on and off the field. We will see the inaugural St George Women's AFL team spring to life which brings our playing roster to 7 teams and we are excited about our club growing and developing further in this aspect. This will not run on its own and we need more volunteers to support.

The end of season 2018 also brings the retirement of two of our driving forces over the past decade. Our Senior coach Terry Mudge and our President Brendan Donohue.

To our retiring senior club coach of eight years Terry Mudge. You came to the club with a vision, a strategy to create success and you leave the football club in a very strong position. It has been the most successful period of the football club in its history with multiple premierships, the development of its junior base and your loyalty, commitment and hard work is a true testament to you. You have driven the Dragons DNA mantra, developed 'boys into men' and built bonds that will last a life time. We thank you and your family for all the sacrifices you have made over the past ten years to ensure St George AFC was successful.

To our retiring President Brendan Donohue. There are no words that can truly capture what you have done and what you mean to this football club. Simply put, without you, there would be no St George AFC. Through your tireless hard work, dedication and sheer determination you have raised this football club into one of the truly leading amateur sporting clubs in the country. From securing critical government grants to presiding over multiple premiership victories and our growing playing roster from 3 teams to 7 including the launch of Women's AFL. We have one of the best playing surfaces in the country, change room facilities that are continually being upgraded and a clubhouse that makes St George a fantastic club for player and supporter alike. A true visionary with a 'can do' attitude. You are a truly humble man in all your success but rest assured, the legacy you leave is one that will always be remembered and we are indebted to you for your service. Thank you Brendan.

We take stock, 2019 will race around and with key retirements we face new challenges. It is time to call upon new leaders on and off the field. Time for others to take the reins, put their hand up and take ownership of your time as protector of the Dragons DNA. We head into 2019 excited about what the future brings. Stephen LORDING Club Secretary

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated - 2018 Annual Report 7 TREASURER'S REPORT St George improved its financial position in 2018 with the 90th anniversary and Sydney AFL finals canteen catering making a significant boost to our coffers.Absent these one off windfalls we nevertheless again just managed to cover our expenses.

The 90th anniversary dinner grossed almost $48K which is a tribute to the hard work of Kerry Wynn and the organising committee. $8K of this was from the sale of the limited edition jersey and club ties. Thank you to Scott Richmond for designing the jersey and to Shane Demir for overseeing this. Likewise Trish Jones, Kate Lee & Maureen Ford ran the finals canteen which grossed almost $57K and made a profit of just over $30K.

These two events provided the cub with approximately $47K in profit and are the reason why we're in the good position we are. Fundraisers like this come around once a decade and it is only thanks to all the volunteer support we received that we were able to capitalise on these opportunities. Remove these our bank balance goes back to close to zero.

Nathaniel Mackenzie Hicks did a fantastic job organizing the Golf Day which again raised several thousand dollars ($4K). The normal home and away canteen brought in $21K in sales against $10K in costs.

Total turnover for the year was $232K against expenses of $191K. Excluding the finals canteen and the figures become $175K and $165K respectively. Adjusting for the extra ticket sales that the 90th dinner brought in over a normal year and we're back to break even or a little worse.

Players probably don't appreciate how much it costs to run the club. Registration fees (35K) do not cover the cost of umpires and affiliation fees (40K). On top of this are physics (20K), medical supplies (2.5K), footballs ( 4K), jerseys, shorts etc ( 16K), and coaching (15K).

The shortfall between registration fees and running costs is made up by long time sponsors such as St George Masonic Club and supporters like Danny Dwyer. We owed them a big thank you. Thank you also to Glenn Jones and President Body Repairs, Sura Pty Ltd and Craig Guthrie and Mortgage Choice.

We are now in the unusual position of having $65K money in the kitty but 11K of this is committed grant funding to improve the change rooms. This is the best position the club has been in for over a decade.

Less than a decade ago, heavily indebted the club almost folded. If we're smart, watch our expenses, improve our sponsorship and invest some of our gains we could sow the seeds of long-term financial security for the club and ensure we're around for the 100th year anniversary.

A big thank you to the St George AFC Committee, volunteers and players who make the club such an enjoyable place to be around. Lastly, the strong state of the club both on and off field is a due in a large part to the hard work and commitment of Brendan Donohue who retires from the Presidency this year. He couldn't be leaving the club in better shape.

Gavin Raper Treasurer

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated - 2018 Annual Report 8 FOOTBALL MANAGER'S REPORT As with any season there are always positives and negatives in terms of on-field performance, and although we didn't have the on-field success that we were after, there were many positives that indicate a strong future for the club on the field in coming seasons.

After winning 3 premierships in 2017, there was always going to be a departure of players as many of the older players saw that success as a good opportunity to hang up their boots. As a result the teams we fielded were often young and light bodied. So with the exception of our Masters boys there were no premierships this year but plenty of other positives.

Some key numbers that indicate a bright future are as follows:

• 180 players played 1 or more games (excluding Masters) • 27 junior players (U 17s) played at least 1 game for the club. • 35 players made their Premier grade debut • 66 players got to play U 19s Div 1

What these numbers indicate are that we were able to give opportunities for a lot of players to play at a high level this season which will help with their development, and hopefully will motivate them to strive to play at a high level in the seasons to come.

The biggest struggle for the year was at times fielding full teams in senior Div 2 and U 19s Div 2. This was driven by a high injury toll across all teams from about half way through the season as well as players making themselves unavailable to play for large chunks of the season. Injuries can't be helped, although regular training can make a difference when it comes to soft tissue injuries, and other more important commitments will arise from time-to-time but we do ask all players to place supporting their mates to play AFL as a higher priority over the winter months.

Special mention to 2 people in particular who will be stepping down from their roles at the end of this year:

• Terry Mudge - who over 8 years gave opportunities to many young men to play at the highest level in Sydney AFL, introduced structures and game plans that helped achieve success for all our teams, and not only achieved success as a coach, but helped develop many of those young men in terms of their playing ability and leadership qualities.

• Brendan Donohue - 10 years ago took on the Presidency of the club when it was financially on it's knees and about to be kicked out of the AFL senior competition. 10 years later we have grown from 3 teams to 6, with a woman's team to be added in 2019, $2 mill has been invested in facilities at Olds Park, we have the best playing surface in Sydney AFL, we are financially in the black, a culture that develops young men as they grow from youths to adults, and we are now one of the most respected clubs in Sydney AFL.

Thank you to all the coaches & managers for their great enthusiasm and commitment to their teams and the club.

ST GEORGE AFC - HISTORICAL COMMITTEE- ANNUAL REPORT 2018

In business I learnt two relevant sayings: • Once its written it becomes part of history, words, comments etc • Or, if not recorded, how can it be tracked back to the original source [documenVs]

In earlier reports, we reported on generalities of Club's [overall] history, as we took possession of long time past [written/recorded] facts. Some were my own compilations -some David Green's - from documentation we sourced or, been passed onto us. We're on a path of checking, reviewing recorded facts, whilst still searching records for lots of unknown data. In past twelve months we've located, been provided with following errors on Club's history:

1 First Grade Minor Premiers in season 1935-Never been recorded in AR even though c. 82 years has passed. 2018 AR should reflect adjustment; South Sydney defeated St George in G Final even though we finished two games clear [of Sth Sydney] at end of H & A season.

2 Sanders Medal-1940 Jack Mullaney-misspelling -A R now adjusted to Jack Mullany - advised by his daughter, M/s Liz Woodbridge [written correspondence August 2018]

3 Runners-Up -Reserve Grade -1942 & 1943 - not shown on Club's current records - yet to be adjusted - waiting confirmation - see P Mccourt email 19/2/2018 to NSW History Society

4 Trotman Family Historical Papers [referred as-Trotman Papers] Paul Trotman - life long friend, former colleague at Miranda juniors, St George AFC, recently produced these papers -to be returned in due course. A treasure trove of historical documents about our Club's history; data, photos, newspaper clippings et al, gathered by his father, Jack Trotman (2007 HOF Inductee) during his playing career mid 1940s to 1960s; assist us complete many unknown historical facts.

5 Result of above -see attached paper of 29 September 2018 - relative to 1953 season

Historical Committee -A voluntary body working behind the scenes to; research, collect and record overall history of St George AFC, to the best of its ability.

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated - 2018 Annual Report 11 Succession Plan - We, Dave Green and I are two active members of this committee; only two colleagues having contact, back to club's 1928 foundation, through to c.2000. We need a colleague or two to research, record Club's history from c. 2000 to present. Having an interest in researching/recording of historical matters will be advantage. Please make enquiries to me. There is not a lot involved as Dave's & my aim? Have our exercise completed with accuracy, prior to our departing (both aged in our 70s) to the football heaven.

Seeking Information - there are many voids to be filled, on Club's history; period 1928 to 1960. We welcome any colleague holding the smallest piece of 'Historical Information' to contact us.

Thanks to Ian Granland, members of NSW Historical Committee, providing us historical data of St George, assisting our research, over past twelve months.

SENIOR COACH'S REPORT Season 2018 commenced with 4 losses where we had 62 goals kicked against us and had a return of 21 goals. This was telling as the pre-season training which was attended very poorly had shown what you put in is what you get out in terms of playing. After our opening round loss, we set about having an 8 week period of high intense running and training, irrespective of who was available. Our successes over the past seasons had shown that teams won't and don't take us lightly and trained and played accordingly.

From rounds 5 through to round 10 we had 2 wins, 4 loss record. What we learned was that we had kicked in our 4 losses 29-48 for a conversation rate of below 35%. In 3 of the 4 losses we had been defeated by 4pts, 24pts and 34pts by the eventual premiers. Interestingly, we had kicked ourselves out of 2 of these results - UTS 10-21 and EC 4-17. But it showed we were starting to be become competitive again.

Round 11 through to R 14 we started to reap the benefit of the 8 week training period. We went on a 4 game winning streak kicking 60+ goals against 33 goals an identifiable turnaround from the first 4 weeks of the year. We had defeated the 2018 runner-up and the reigning premieres in this 4 week block. Spirits were high and we had positioned ourselves for finals football again.

R15 and R16 really sat us back losing collectively by 15pts (3 and 12pts)-2 critical losses and losses that we directly contributed to. We then finished the season off with a win in R18.

Our time in 2018 was an incredible experience and to equate this - In 2016 we had used 36 players with 9 debutantes - in 2018 we had used 69 players with 34 debutantes. On 2 occasions we played with 21 players (sufferedour heaviest losses for the year) and a further 4 occasions where we had to have 2 or more players back up!

We had beaten last year's premiers and had defeated 2 of the top 4 teams in 2018. Had lost 4 games by less than 4 goals. UTS x 2 (4 & 12pts), Manly x 1 (3pts) and EC x1 (24pts after kicking 2goals 9 in the last qtr. ). So it was a season were we didn't take the opportunities presented to us and/or create them.

The table above proves if you focus on both defense and offense you can reap many benefits as a team.

Of the 8 years the prems have played in 6 of the 8 finals series playing in 15 finals matches. We have never finished in the bottom 3 and have finished in the top 3 on 4 occasions.

When I joined 8 years ago we had 3 teams and we now have 6, with the addition of a women's team coming on board in 19, making 7 teams. What a turnaround. We have won multiple 19's flags with the 19's not missing a finals series in this time. Our development team had won 2 flags in this time also. Along with our Div 4 also winning a flag.

1 thing I remember to this day was when Brendan was interview by Sydney AFL and was asked what the plan was. He replied with - we have a 5 year plan where we want to have the "opportunity 'to play for a premier division flag. Well mate the boys surely did that. We gave it one hell of a mighty shake and along the way made opposition clubs stand up and take notice of our "DNA".

The journey has yet again proved to me what a great place a football club is, when you collectively have a common goal and that being building young boys into men with the foundation of a club community behind you.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank -

Andrew Wynn - what a job you have done. Your academy is the back bone to the club. You have single handily provided the club with a future. Your constant backing of selections has made for an enjoyable time together, even though you do barrack for the Tigers?

KerryWynn - what an infectious person you are. As has Andrew, you have been there for every step we have taken over the 8 seasons with your camera and smile. Thank you

Derek Waters - your kind heartiness and mateship along the way has been invaluable to me. You've made the year understandable and was always there for a chat at all hours. Thank you.

Kev Wilson for the past 8 seasons you have had to put up with me BUT you have taken every training/game day step with me. Even with your health problems you were still there every week during training and game day. Your DNA is wonderful (and by the way so is your whistling) thank you mate for sticking with me and the boys. You have made it a really enjoyable time at the club. A big thank you mate.

Gavin Raper - I wish I had met you earlier than 8 seasons ago. I can truly say that when I introduced the DNA slogan it was based on what you had shown me in the later parts of your playing career and more importantly what you continually preform at the club and for the direct benefit to all the players. I have learnt a truck load from you Gadge and I will generally miss that. Thank you for your total support over the past 8 seasons. We have had a great ride.

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated- 2018 Annual Report 13 For the players - It's been a long enjoyable road from where we started. We collectively over the journey have given our foundations and that of Sydney AFL an all mighty shake. Congratulations to all.

I wish to thank all the players over the past 8 seasons but in particular Ben Jones - Alexander Wynn - Bryce Addison - Nick Ryan - Declan Donohue - David Lycakis - Ben Hodgson - Stephen Wilsen all these boys have played since day 1 collectively they have played over 1100 games of football for the club.

All these guys have spilt blood for the club - Thank you

And lastly

Brendan Donohue - Having you back me in and be side by side with me every step of the way gave me the drive to push the group each week. What you have completed for a community club is outstanding. You single handily had new rooms built, you single handily had the ground upgraded to be the best in Sydney and you single handily took the club from financial ruin to financial freedom of today.

You taught me about longevity and the bigger picture BUT more importantly taught me to be considerate and constantly build something for all to enjoy. There has only been 2 men in my life that has pushed and probe to make me a better person. I can now say I have a 3rd in you. From the bottom of my heart thank you.

To your wonderful wife Colette and sons Kieran, Dees, Liam and Gareth thank you for allowing me to learn from your husband/father.

Kieran who would have thought 8 years later and some 150+ games of football that we all would have achieved what we have? Thank you for introducing me to the ST. George AFC

Terry Mudge Senior Coach

PREMIER DIVISION RESERVES COACH'S REPORT After a successful 2017 season hopes were high for 2018 but we all knew it was going to be a lot more difficult this time round with a number of players departingthe club due to various reasons. From round one it was obvious reserve grade were going to find it difficult to field a competitive team each week without depleting the under 19s teams.

Whilst we finished 7th on the ladder after the regular season we were only one win outside the top five, with a few narrow loses and a few games where we were leading at three quarter time but ended up losing probably costing us our opportunity at finals in 2018.

The 2018 season was one of the toughest in terms of senior player availability, which tested our club's depth. The positive from this was that many young players were given an opportunity to play senior football and none of them disappointed as they showed class, determination and courage above their years. All of the under 19s players chosen to play senior football contributed to the team on the day and throughout the season. This puts the club in a great position moving forward and shows we have an abundant amount of quality under 19 players coming through the St George AFC system.

Whilst 2018 was not a season to put up on the highlights board, there were plenty of lessons learnt, whether be as a player or as a coach. As a first year coach I now have a better understanding of the difficulties of coaching as well as still wanting to play senior football and would like to thank all the people who helped out throughout the year, especially Shane Demir. Hopefully the players who had

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated - 2018 Annual Report 14 the opportunity to play Reserve grade football this year took something away from the season, and whilst we didn't get the wins on the board that we wanted, every game is an opportunity to learn something new and to make you a better player in the future.

It is now a matter of making sure we keep these talented footballers at the club to ensure our club is at the top of the ladder next year and beyond.

Stephen WILSEN

DIVISION 2 COACH'S REPORT Coming off a premiership in 2017, the expectation was set high for the senior Div 2 side in 2018. As things got underway for the season it was clear that numbers were going to be an issue throughout the season.

We set about not letting that be an issue throughout the year though. We started well with wins in our first two games including a superb win at home against Pennant Hills which could well have been the best win of our season.

However through the middle of the season the losses started to pile up and it was looking touch and go as to whether the boys were going to get a place in the finals series we so desired.

Crucial losses away from home to Pennant Hills and North Shore cost us our chance as we ended up missing out on finals on percentage alone.

Despite missing finals, it was a phenomenal effort to win so many games this year with the limited numbers, three of those wins at home by less than a goal including one over the eventual premiers!

Looking ahead to 2019, I believe the side can definitely be back in finals and even contending for the flag. With some more players back, the future is bright.

Lach Ian RYAN

UNDER 19 DIVISION 1 COACH'S REPORT Firstly I'd like to thank Dale Widders for taking on the Manager duties for the season, Andrew Wynn for all his efforts recruiting players, working with the junior clubs and organising last minute replacements, and Warren Tegg for his coaching contribution and always having a positive approach to facing the challenges of u/19s coaching. Between us all we managed to get every player a game each week, sometimes two games.

Every year new players come into U/19s and getting a read on where a player is likely to make the best contribution can be hard. A latecomer to the 19s role I was pleased to discover that we had a the makings of a strong team with dominant ruckmen in Wyatt Horbury and Nelson Carey and skilful midfielders in Jack Jones, Caleb Felton, Wilson Mudge and Eray Selvi to name a few. Down back we unearthed tall defenders in Callum Nash, Lachlan Macks and Will Lourey, whilst Bailey Johnson stood out in head gear as a player that just didn't quit. Around that were some good ball users in Riley Tracey, Keegan Quinn, Anthony Lombardo, Harry Challen and Lachie Querzoli. Meanwhile up forward players like Brad Uglow, Kirian Ayres, Dan Widders, Ethan Maher, and Noah Casalini, were all strong overhead and capable of kicking multiple goals in a game.

Add names like Joshua Masters, Jack Dawson, Andrerw Stelze, and William Hack plus a few others and we clearly had some depth. Successful teams need 30-35 capable players to get through a season. Each week we had a number of players in higher grades and needed the depth to win games. Unfortunately this also had a negative effect on Division 2 19s which lost players and resulted St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated - 2018 Annual Report 15 in them being undermanned in many games. U/1 ?s that came into the side all showed they were capable as did all the u/19s that played seniors. It bodes well for the future of both the 19s and senior sides.

Looking through our results we only dropped games to the grand finals sides and were the most competitive team against the eventual premiers UNSW, one the best 19s team I've seen and deserving winners. We showed fighting spirit when we snuck home in close games against Sydney Uni and Camden and our get out of jail win against East Coast after being 5-6 goals down at half time. I still don't know what triggered the revival, because there was nothing revolutionary in the half time chat, but kick goals we did.

As a coach I enjoyed the general banter between players, got confused at times about which Selvi, Lombardo or Challen I was coaching, had the pleasure of watching players like Travis O'Grady and Dan Travers get better as the season progressed and was repeatedly reminded of how short the teenage male attention span can be. Having to leave deserving players out of sides, especially finals sides is the downside of coaching but it reveals a player's true character. Players that persevere in adverse circumstances, or support their team mates when they have a strong argument to be playing themselves, display traits that will take them far in life.

Congratulations to Caleb Felton on the Best and Fairest, a deserving winner and runner-up Eray Selvi. Congratulations also to Noah Casalini for winning the league medal despite playing only half the season and to Nelson Carey and Eray Selvi who were a vote behind. Twenty players attracted votes from their teammates in the Player's Player award and the joint winners, Caleb and Nelson, dominated the voting. The last 3-2-1 votes I received tied the count.

Thank you to the Committee who have turned Olds Park into the best playing surface in Sydney. That other clubs are jealous is probably the best indicator of how good we've got it.

Lastly I want to thank Terry Mudge for all his efforts over the years at St George. He taught a lot of us how to play and coach. Until he arrived I didn't realise how much I didn't know about football. In eight years he rarely missed a session and I suspect he put more hours into St George than his business. He'll be a hard act to follow.

Gavin Raper Under 18 Div 1 Coach

UNDER 19 DIVISION 2 COACH'S REPORT 2018 was a tough but rewarding year for the U19 Division 2 side. While we didn't get the results that we wanted, we were able to develop our skills and build our level of experience in senior football.

The leadership at training and on the weekend was all a coach could ask for - we had a number of young men who were willing and able to step up and lead by example. With leaders like this, our club has a bright future. In particular, Mitch Amey, Daniel Travers, Harrison Blacker, Anton Amalfi, Jacob Merlino and Josh Higgs deserve particular mention for their contribution to the side this season.

My approach was to operate a leadership group for each game, with three players chosen to perform the various duties of a captain on game day. Each of these players were called on to join that leadership group numerous times during the season and on each occasion, they lead their team with distinction.

We finished the season in 8th place, winning 3 games (including one forfeit). Due to the persistent issues with player numbers across the club, we were forced to forfeit the last few games of the season ourselves. Despite those issues, the dedication from our players meant that we had good numbers at training and high spirits all season long.

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated - 2018 Annual Report 16 Our core squad of U19 players was supported by juniors from the surrounding clubs, all of whom stepped up to the higher standard. This valuable experience will help these young players develop their football, but also help us to maintain our strong links with local clubs and encourage more players to make the leap to U19 football next season. Given the issues that we had all season with numbers, these relationships are more important than ever.

All in all, it was a disappointing season, we only got the sing the song twice and our numbers meant that we weren't able to finish the season as we would have wanted. Despite that, this season from our U19 Division 2 team shows that our club has a bright future.

Warren TEGG U19 DIV 2 COACH - 2018

Masters First Game V Southern Power 14 April 2018

While enjoying a quiet beer at the pub Brendan, Fletch and Shane formed the idea for St George to enter a team in the Masters Competition. When good people have a good idea, surely great things can happen!

The word went out and a combination of past players and new players to the Club provided us with a strong nucleus to form a well rounded team.

St. GeorgeAustralian Football Club Incorporated - 2018 Annual Report 17 From our first training run (walk for some) the players formed a strong bond which allowed myself and the coaching panel to plan and execute a strong attacking type of football from the first bounce.

Our first hit out against Sutherland proved we had a strong combination of players. Also a large gathering of past players supporting the team from the boundary made for a great start to the season. As the year progressed the individual personalities started to combine into an even stronger team. We were now on the hunt to win the Grand Final.

On game day of Round 6, the day of the 9QTh Anniversary Ball of St George AFC, the President informed me that we had to win this game. With a strong gathering of past players on the boundary line to lend support a victory was had. Later that night at the Ball it was a proud President announcing that St George would be hosting and playing in the Grand Final at Olds Park. Again this was Brendan working quietly behind the scenes.

On Grand Final Day we were primed and ready to go from the first bounce with our forward line playing open fast moving football. With the early loss of Chappy to a shoulder injury the boys turned defence into attack and converted many scoring opportunities. With a strong overall performance we were able to transform Fletch into a Grand Final winning Captain. Best players on the day were J Shineberg, T McHardy, G Bain, S Lording, F Lonergan, R Corser. Best Aftergame performance Roger The Dodger for his national TV exposure of his Grand Final medallion

I would like to congratulate the season's Best and Fairest and all award winners. To the Committee for the insight to allow us to form a Grand Final winning team, THANK YOU To my fellow coaches, Chris Ryan and Ray Brennan, THANK YOU To Craig Guthrie for his help and support in doing the goal umpiring when required, THANK YOU To Shane Demir, for all your behind the scenes work and input on team selection, THANK YOU To Ben Baudinette, for your much anticipated match report postings on Facebook, THANK YOU To David and Lynda Fletcher, for all your work this season in the background before and after the games all of which contributed greatly to our success, THANK YOU

Ron Kemp Memorial Trophy - Club Person of the Year Trish JONES, Maureen FORD & Kate LEE Donated by Mavis Kemp and Ron Kemp Junior in memory of their husband and father who was a prominent player of the Club. The Kemp family werehard workers of the Club with both Ron Senior and Ron Junior having successful careers. The winners of this award we really put to the test throughout this season but as is the standard for the winners of this award they displayed true St George DNA. When the opportunity came to run the finals canteen out at Blacktown 3 people bore the brunt of the pre-event and event day work loads. But with their professionalism, resilience, and determination they carried out their responsibilities superbly. The end result was the largest single fundraising event of the year, as well as recognition by Sydney AFL of the best finals catering ever! Congratulations and thank you to our Club Persons of the Year Trish Jones, Kate Lee, and Maureen Ford.

Bill Lawler Memorial Shield - Rising Star Liam BOGNAR Dedicated to the memory of former President and Life Member. Bill was very prominent in the promotion of junior football in the St George and Sutherland districts and a tireless worker for the St George senior club. Bill passed away suddenly in January 2001. If the player is in their second senior season they must have played no more than 7 senior games in their first year.

Given the strength of our juniors, and that for some games we had 10 U19s playing in Premier Division, this year's winner had to beat a star studded list of eligible players. Although still eligible for U 19s he chose to play seniors all year. Playing mostly out of the backline he clearly displayed his skills, poise, and footy smarts to put together a wonderful first season playing senior football, which culminated in a Rising Star Award nomination by Sydney AFL. Congratulations to this year's Rising Star, Liam Bognar.

John Bester Memorial Award - Encouragement, Endeavour & Commitment Miles BRIDGLAND Dedicated to the memory of a fine player and leader of our First Grade side during the 1970's and 1980's. John was always respected by his teammates especially the younger players because of the encouragement he gave them. Unfortunately, he lost a hard battle with a terminal illness and the Club lost a great player and teammate.

One of the most talented players on the St George list, this player had an immediate impact on the Premier Division team. His speed, goal kicking acumen, and tackle busting style of play made him an exciting player to watch and a valuable contributor across the full season. Even though still eligible for U 17s, this player will be a big part of the Dragons rise up the ladder in the years to come. Congratulations Miles Bridgland.

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated - 2018 Annual Report 25 Colleen J Wadling Memorial Award - Courage Ben HODGSON Donated by a former President, John Wadling in memory of his wife. John presided over the extensions to the clubrooms and contributed significantly towards the raising of funds and gaining development approval. Colleen and John's son David was a fine First Grade player in the 1970's and 1980's.

This year's winner of the Courage Award is a respected leader of the club who, despite his short stature, was always prepared to throw himself in to the middle of packs or tackle the opposition's biggest player. Quick, skillful on both sides of the body, a natural leader both on & off the field, and prepared to play through injuries, congratulations to our 2018 Courage Award winner Ben Hodgson.

RM McConnell Memorial Award- Best Playing Club Person Nathaniel McKENZIE-HICKS Dedicated to the memory of one of the Club's greatest stalwarts. Robert "Apples" McConnell was Mr Football of the Sydney football scene. A Life member of the St George Club, he worked tirelessly for St George for 36 years in many official capacities, donating many untold hours to his beloved Club. Bob was honoured with the Merit Award of the National Australian Football Council in 1976. He was also made a Life Member of the NSW AFL the same year. In 1977, the NSW AFL recognised Bob's contribution by naming the Bob McConnell Club Championship Trophy for competition by all clubs in the Sydney Football League and Sydney Football Association. For many years Bob was the timekeeper for the at their SCG matches. Bob's photograph hangs above the clubroom door as he still proudly watches each batch of new Dragons grow.

Many awards are tough to choose, however this selection was one of the easier one's to select due to the leadership and involvement in so many off-field activities by this year's winner. His list of leadership & involvement includes organizing both the Golf Day and Comedy for a Cause, as well as working hard to achieve success for Red & White Ball, & End-Of-Season Players Trip. That is on top of fulfilling all his regular off-field duties and responsibilities. Plus of course he had his best season on field cementing a spot in the Premier Division team. A future leader, and perhaps President, of this club, congratulations Nathaniel McKenzie-Hicks.

Bob McConnell Memorial Trust Award- for Junior Development Jacob DOL Established when Bob passed away in 1995 by the caretakersof his trust fund. It was agree at this time that the Club would honour this award towards the development of localjuniors with significant representative achievements.

This club is built on developing it's local juniors and no club in Sydney has better juniors than ours. As an U17, this player played both U19s and Premier Division across the season. Such was his ability to adapt to the pace and intensity of Premier Division football that instead of being just an outside player, he was soon a regular being positioned as a midfielder and competing against the best midfielders in Sydney AFL in centre square contests. And he performed superbly, especially in the second half of the season, when we scored wins against clubs placed higher up the ladder. This player has a huge AFL future ahead of them. Congratulations Jacob Doi.

Chelsea Phillis Award for Outstanding Junior Callum NASH Donated by Darren & Lisa Phillis and the Adelaide Crows Football Club. Dedicated to the memory of Chelsea Phillis, who as a two year old succumbed to an illness, the cause is still unexplained by medical science. The family chose to donate Chelsea's liver and kidney's to the organ transplant unit to assist in saving the lives of others. Chelsea's short life would not be in vain as a result.

Another one of our outstanding juniors, this player was another U17 that was able to progress from juniors, to U19s, to Ressies, and then Premier Division, playing 8 Prems games across the season. Tall and athletic defenders are hard to find, and despite often playing on much bigger bodied opponents, this player acquitted himself really well in every game. He reads the game very well, is brave, and has safe hands. We are very excited about the player this person will develop in to over the next few years. Congratulations Callum Nash

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated - 2018 Annual Report 34 SYDNEY AFL RISING STAR AWARD

AFL Sydney would like to congratulate St George Dragons player Liam Bognar who has been adjudicated as the Men's Rising Star for Round 14.

Name: Liam Bognar Nickname: Boggie AFL Sydney Club: St. George Dragons AFC Position: Half Back Flank Junior Club: Miranda Bombers JAFC Favourite activity to do outside of football: Liam is a part-time barista. On top of this he spends a lot of time with his family and his girlfriend. What is one thing that we don't know about this Rising Star that they are well known for around the club? He was an outstanding soccer player beforeswitching to AFL. But he makes the best cup of espresso coffee of any player at the club. All the boys want him to make their coffeespre-game. What role do they play for the club both on and off the field? On field he plays as a rebounding defender. Off the field he is a reliable & popular clubman, often helping out with tasks and duties around the club, including making coffee for the coach.

St. George Australian Football Club lncorporated-2018 Annual Report 35 The night before the game what will they most likely be doing? Have a large bowl of his mum's home made pasta with her secret sauce handed down through 3 generations of her mum's family, then relaxes by watching the Friday night AFL game. Do they have any pre-game superstitions? He must shake the hands of the first person he meets when he enters the clubrooms. Reason for nomination this round: Liam joined St George in season 2017 after coming through the clubs Academy system. He played U19s last season and was a important part of the premiership winning team, playing mostly in the backline. This year, despite still being eligible for U19s he has found a spot in our Premier Division team each week playing mostly off a half back flank. As he has got used to the tempo of senior football his confidence has grown as has his impact on the team's performance. He reads the game extremely well and has a very safe pair of hands combined with good disposal skills. This culminated in last Saturday's game vs Camden where he made 16 disposals, including 5 intercept marks and even sneaking forward to score a goal. Coach quote on Performance: "Liam has been one of the young U19s that has really impressed me, not only in pre-season but also how much he has improved over the course of the season. I remember seeing him play as a 16 year old in our U19 Division 2 team and was impressed with his skill and composure even back then. In particular what impresses me playing seniors is how clean his hands are. He rarely fumbles a mark".

Congrats Liam!
