Grand Final— September 20, 2014 MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER As another football season draws to a close, the final day of competition has arrived for AFL Sydney with Premier Division Finals here at Blacktown International Sports Park.

In an extraordinary result, eight clubs will compete for the four premierships on offer, capping off another fantastic season in Sydney’s premier AFL competition. It’s been an exciting year of football for everyone, and well done to those who still remain at the business end of the season.

Each year we see AFL Sydney evolve and improve, and we are committed to ensuring that the competi- tion remains a high quality league at the fore of our football community here in NSW/ACT. Our represen- tative football program was a highlight this year - which included the first ever women’s team playing under the AFL Sydney banner. Over the June long weekend both senior teams travelled to Canberra to take on AFL Canberra at Manuka which resulted in two great wins for the Sydney sides.

We’ve seen six Premierships already decided for 2014; congratulations to all the clubs involved, in particu- lar to the winners of the Women’s Division 1 – Sydney University. It was a fantastic weekend of football out at Blacktown, and all the clubs who were involved should be commended for the quality of the matches and the way they were conducted.

Congratulations to Blacktown (Division Five), UTS (Division Four), Randwick(Division Three) and Sydney Uni (Division Two) who claimed titles over Penrith, Wollondilly, Penrith and Blacktown respectively.

Today looks to be another fantastic day of football, and the rematch of last year’s Premier Division Grand Final between Pennant Hills and Manly will no doubt be an exciting contest. Manly-Warringah, in their first year as the GIANTS, have continued their stellar run in Premier Division in just their second year of inclu- sion. Pennant Hills will be buoyed by the inclusion of Phelan Medallist Alex Goodall, awarded earlier this week, who will look to cap off his milestone year with a big win.

The finals race for Premier Division came down to the final game of the season when the East Coast Ea- gles upset UNSW/ES to bundle them out of finals and give Sydney University fifth position, a testament to the genuine competitiveness of the league.

The AFL Sydney Women’s competition went from strength to strength in its second year of multiple divi- sions. Sydney University prevailed in a tightly-fought contest with UNSW-ES in the Premier Division Grand Final, which exemplified the skill, athleticism and toughness of the women’s game. Sydney University followed on from their victory with midfielder Stephanie Walker taking out the Premier Division Best & Fairest at the Phelan Medal presentation earlier this week. Southern Power won the local derby over the Wollongong Saints to earn them the Division 2 Premiership for 2014, in another enthralling encounter.

A very exciting day of football is ahead of us and I look forward to watching all the action from the stands.

Thank you also to everyone who has played a role in making this season a success - players, supporters, club sponsors and the countless volunteers that go into running a club. Your contributions are vital to the health and success of our wonderful game.

Craig Bolton—General Manager AFL NSW/ACT

www.sydneyafl.com.au 3 Grand Final— September 20, 2014 MANLY WARRINGAH NOTES The Manly-Warringah Australian Football Club 2014 season is now nearing the end with Premier Division Grand final the last game, and a huge grand final replay it is - and for the Club a defence of this crown is the ultimate prize. The 2014 season has been a successful one for the Club, starting with the inauguration of the Manly-Warringah Women's team who from a standing start of 6 players in preseason have managed to bring together a team week in week out and come away with 4 wins for the season - an incredible feat for a group of women who in the main have not played AFL before, and certainly not played together as a team. Our U19s team was promoted to Division 1 for the first time in the Club's history - and the boys exceeded expecta- tions falling one game short of the getting into the Grand Final - an achievement further impressed that they were leading going into the last break of the preliminary final; the future is bright as majority of the boys are young enough to play U19s in 2015. Our senior mens Division 4 side had a solid year, though missing out on finals showed some real exciting glimpses during the season beating 3 eventual finalists sides from Round 9 to end of the H&A season. Our senior mens Division 2 side like the U19 fell one game short of the Grand Final, and throughout the season showed they were genuine finals contenders. Premier Division maintained the rage in 2014 retaining the minor premiership, and through to the Grand Final this weekend as genuine favourites, and mindful of keeping the lid on this. The success for the 2014 season across all teams culminated in the Club - for third year running - winning the AFL Sydney Club Championship. The Club is proud of what it has achieved in 2014 and has a steely eye on the ultimate prize this Saturday. Off the field the Club is indebted to the many committed and selfless volunteers who hold our Club fabric together; to the GWS Giants for aligning with our Club for the first time this year, allowing the club access to the profession- alism of their know-how and to their world class facilities; and to all our sponsors, our major sponsor being Hotel Steyne - for their long terms support for the Club and community football. Finally to the Manly- Warringah players and coaches themselves, irrespective of outcomes of this weekend, what an incredible result you have achieved this year. Very well done to all involved in the Club.

The Demise of Newtown

Newtown was a club which most probably still holds the record as the most successful in the League’s history. It was formed in 1903 and folded at the end of the 1986 season. During this period, unlike some clubs which came and went, participated in every season and never changed its colours or name; the club played 1,531 games, winning 973 losing 542 and drawing 16. Ten percent of the losses were incurred between 1983 and 1986 when the club was on its way out. In 1983 it lost ten games, thirteen in 1984, sev- enteen and finishing last in 1985 and a further fifteen in 1986, one of which against Campbelltown, was a forfeit. The club also finished last in that sea- son.

Newtown had never finished last before 1985 and in fact was never out of the top four between 1915-42 and 1944-63. Additionally, from then to 1981 it was in and out of the top four or five in the competition. Over the years, Newtown First Grade participated in thirty-eight grand finals, of which it won nineteen. Between 1945 and 1950 they collected six consecutive premier- ships and as well, during their time, the club won twenty reserve grade flags.

Besides its on field successes, Newtown also spawned a number of League Presidents and officials, of which Jim Phelan, recognized as the father of foot- ball in Sydney, was one. www.sydneyafl.com.au 14 Grand Final— September 20, 2014 PHELAN MEDALLIST—ALEX GOODALL Pennant Hills midfielder, Alex Goodall has claimed the highest individual honour in AFL Sydney- the Phelan Medal- at a gala ceremony last Monday night.

Goodall was named best on ground by the umpires on a remarkable eight occasions on his way to a total of 28 votes to record a comfortable four-vote win from Manly- Warringah midfielder, Connor Pettersson. Selby Lee-Steere of North Shore rounded out the top three on 19 votes.

Affectionately known as "Cheese," Goodall has been a long term member of the Demons midfield, notching over 100 senior games, and has built his reputation on a great defen- sive, close checking focus.

A no-fuss, tough as they come midfielder, it is hard to miss Goodall not only for his stocky frame and red hair, but also for the fact he is often at the bottom of every pack. Like Simon Black, he has great vision with both hand and foot in traffic.

A perennial member of the representative arena for the past three seasons, where for the second year running the coaching staff named him as best afield in AFL Sydney's big win over AFL Canberra in June (to go with his best on ground against AFL Cairns last year).

He was named as Number 2 in the AFL Sydney’s Top 20 players and has been named in the AFL Sydney Team of the Year in 2012, 2013 and 2014. He was named Pennant Hills Best and Fairest in 2012- the year he recorded his previous best Phelan Medal result; fourth behind current Sydney Swan, Dane Rampe on 15 votes.

Goodall was arguably the Demons’ best player in 2013 and his absence from their Grand Final loss to Manly-Warringah last season could well have been the difference.

'Cheese's' ability to perform on the big stage is unquestioned and he will be a vital player for the Demon's chances as they look for redemption in Saturday’s Grand Final rematch against Manly-Warringah.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR— GREG CORLESS

Greg is the Senior Operations Manager for the Penrith Australian Football Club. He has been in this role for the past 5 years. In addi- tion Greg has also undertaken other roles, usually concurrently, which include Ground Manager, Canteen manager, Purchasing offi- cer, Webpage/Facebook maintainer, Publicity officer and Planning and Development officer. Greg is the type of volunteer every club wishes they had. Nothing is too much trouble and the amount of work he puts into the club is astounding. With the club fielding five teams for the past few years – training has had to be spread over four nights. Greg attends every training night unless he is at a club or AFL Sydney meeting. Home games are usually spread over both Sat- urday and Sunday and Greg is the first there to set up and still there to pack up at the end of the day. Greg would easily spend 30 - 40 hours every week undertaking football club duties. His commitment to the club means there are often times when he does not get to watch his son or daughter play their own games. Most times he is usually at another venue supporting whichever team needs help the most. The Penrith club has enjoyed tremendous success in the past five seasons and this is largely due to the dedication, commitment and tireless work of Greg Corless. Greg is quite simply the hardest working person within the Penrith club. The Penrith club is extremely appreciative of Greg’s commitment, enthusiasm and drive.

AFL SYDNEY LIFE MEMBER INDUCTEE—IAN WRIGHT

Ian was introduced to Australian football when he watched the 1966 Grand Final between St George and Western Suburbs at Trumper Park. From there he was hooked and has had a continuous relationship with the game in Sydney ever since. It was in 1975 that he began his involvement with Macquarie Uni AFC first as a player, and from there a committee member, or volunteer for 39 years. He played 101 games for the club between 1975 and 1992, nearly all games in the then 2nd Division Reserve Grade competi- tion. Ian’s activities were and still are:-

· He has held every administrative position and operational within Macquarie Uni Football Club, except President - although he says, he did assume the President’s role one time when the incumbent was overseas. · Macquarie Uni FC’s time keeper for all home games which often involves four games on each day. He also usually undertakes timekeeping for most of the club’s away games. · AFL Sydney Finals & Representative Football timekeeping · He was a founding Committee member of the NSW Australian Football History Society where he is still involved and was for- merly the Secretary and the Treasurer. · Involved with the NSWAFL Umpires Association as a Goal Um- pire for fours years and in that time was Assistant Secretary of the Umpires Association for two years and Secretary for one

www.sydneyafl.com.au 27 Grand Final— September 20, 2014 WEEK 3 FINALS REVIEW Article and Photos by Michael Shillito

Pennant Hills vs St George With Manly having already qualified for next week’s Grand Final, Pennant Hills met St George at Blacktown on Sunday afternoon for the other spot on Sydney footy’s biggest stage. The Demons and Dragons had played off a fortnight ago in the Qualifying Final, in what was a cracker of a contest. This time round the quality of football wasn’t anywhere near as high; but the end result was the same. A Pennant Hills win. The weather in Sydney lately hasn’t been great, but Sunday was the best day we’ve had for weeks. The first sign of spring, with the sun shining and the mercury hitting 24 degrees, with a slight wind picking up at unpredictable intervals. Blacktown International Sportspark was looking a treat. Great conditions for footy.

The stakes were high and the pressure was intense in a first quarter in which scoring shots were hard to come by. Tom Angel got one early for Pennant Hills, and Tom Green had a reply for the Dragons. But for much of the quarter the ball was closer to the boundary lines on the wing than to the goal squares; and those goals would be the only ones to be scored in a low-scoring and evenly-matched first quarter. The Dragons held a two-point lead at quarter time; but the Demons emerged from the quarter time huddle full of running and wasted no time in getting on top in general play. Kicking to the railway end in the sec- ond term, the midfield pumped the ball forward with regularity, with the defenders pushing forward to prevent the Dragons from getting anywhere near their scoring zone. So dominant were the Demons around the ground that the Dragons would not get an inside 50 until the 17 minute mark of the quarter. Peter Barnes found the big sticks early in the quarter to give the Demons the lead. But for all their domi- nance around the ground, the Demons struggled to find the goals that the run of play suggested they should. Although the St George midfield was badly beaten, the defenders stood tall and repelled Demon attacks time and time again. And the Demons let themselves down with some wasteful finishing on the forward line.

Finally the Demons achieved some reward for effort as Aaron Crisfield sharked a boundary throw-in and snapped truly. And with the clock in time-on, Tim Angel was ridden in the back 40 metres from goal. Al- though Angel’s feet may have slipped, his goal-kicking wings hadn’t as he steered the ball through the big sticks.

The Demons may not have achieved as much scoring as the run of play suggested they should; but the Dragons were unable to get close. Their best chance came in the dying seconds, Dom Killworth going for a run and two bounces before the siren sounded. The Dragons had been held score-less in the second quar- ter; and the Demons’ lead was 21 points at the long break. After taking 17 minutes to get inside 50 in the second quarter, the Dragons got the centre break to start the third and were within the circle within 17 seconds; but the Demons had the numbers back to clear the ball out of danger.

Already more than three goals ahead, the Demons searched through the quarter for a decisive further blow; but it would take a while in coming. Not for a lack of chances. Marks within striking distance weren’t paid, shots sailed across the face of goal or didn’t make the distance. But eventually, with the clock not far short of time-on, Sam Zikman marked in the pocket under the shadow of the behind post. It was a tight angle, but running around, Zikman landed the goal and struck a key blow in the race for the Grand Final berth.

Zikman’s goal was the only major score in the third term, and the De- mons enjoyed a 25-point lead at the last change. The Dragons only had one goal on the board, having been comprehensively outplayed for the last two quarters.

Will history repeat and the maroon and white reign supreme? Or will the team of the red and the blue raise the grand old flag? All will be revealed at Blacktown next Saturday as we reach the culmination of this season’s Sydney AFL season.

www.sydneyafl.com.au 28 Grand Final— September 20, 2014 WEEK 3 FINALS REVIEW

But early in the last quarter, suddenly the Dragons had a lifeline. Ten- sions had boiled over with some push and shove in the early moments of the final term. And when another bout broke out when Nick Shaw had the ball in the forward pocket, a 50 metre penalty turned a tough shot into a certainty. Suddenly the margin was back to 22 points, and a minute later Bryce Addison found himself with a free kick 20 metres from home and for a fleeting moment the prospect of an unlikely comeback was raised.

As quickly as the idea of a comeback appeared, it was gone. Addison’s shot missed. The Demons went coast to coast. And Damian Dell’Aquila played on, 25 metres from home, and the ball found the target to deliver the knockout blow.

The Demons’ place in the Grand Final was assured. They would continue to create chances, missing most of them; sometimes due to the wind, but more often because of pressure and poor finishing. Tom Angel landed his third goal to put icing on the victory cake; and a 50 metre penalty gave Daniel Napper a conso- lation goal in the dying seconds.

But when the final siren sounded, it was the Demons who would enjoy the spoils of victory. Their fourth win over the Dragons in 2014, and just the second time in 12 seasons that the team that lost the Second Semi has bounced back to win the Prelim Final. But it was a subdued victory song back in the rooms after the game. The toughest test is yet to come, and the Demons will need to put in a much stronger perform- ance next week if they are to challenge the Manly juggernaut.

The final margin was 29 points. Tom Angel, Ranga Ediriwickrama and Ben Urwin made pivotal contribu- tions to the Demon success. Bryce Addison, Nick Shaw and Michael Milner were St George’s best. It’s a sense of déjà vu. Last year Manly were the first to qualify for the Grand Final and then Pennant Hills beat St George in the Prelim Final. And this year, the same.
