PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Season 2010 resembled life really, some good, some bad, trials and tribulations and some special times. The management still has gaps but continues to strengthen.

We have been certified by the AFL to Bronze Level in its Quality Club Programme, one of a few in Sydney to be so recognised. In fact the club is not far away from reaching Silver Level. We have achieved Level I in the Good Sports Programme initiated by the Government and supported by St George Masos and the AFL. Sydney AFL’s AUDIT of our administration and management has placed us in its top ranking for which we received over $1700.

Importantly by mid next season we will be free of all debts

On the field we have improved from last year. Of particular note is the increasing number of recent and present Under 18 players making their mark in First Grade and Ressies. Together with our more mature players I get the feeling we are heading in the right direction.

We have a large number of people to thank.

No club can survive without sponsors. So to Presfast, Jenny & Gavin Bloor, to St George Masos and to Danny and Enid Dwyer, a very big thank-you particularly in these tough economic conditions .

Our coaching staff has been terrific. To Shane Demir, Vinnie Stevens & Geoff “Bear” Axford; your commitment, your drive and your leadership have helped in the development of this young squad of players .

Each side has managers and we also have medical staff. To Minnie Demir, Kevin Wilsen, Alan Pandelis and Steve Lowden we do appreciate all that you do even though we do not say it often enough. A similar thank –you to Jim Kazaglis for all your help. The boys are very confident in your ability and this makes a big difference. Not so sure about your kicking!

To everyone who is involved in the club from the canteen, to the BBQ, to the goal umpires, to the water carriers, to the drivers and to all who just offer a word of encouragement. Thanks.

We have a wonderful committee who quietly, except for Ross Bowen, go about their business. They are the back bone of the club and even though they may not know it yet, all have agreed to stand for re-election and hopefully to be joined by more supporters .

Also we are indeed indebted to Sydney AFL particularly, Garry Burkinshaw, our local members, Darryl Melham and Kevin Greene, Hurstville Council and its mayor Philip Sansom.

And to our players. We could not do it without you and there is no reason to do it if you are not there.

Well what does all this mean and where are we going? I HAVE A VISION!

The Administration is in place. The Management is in place. We will be debt free in the middle of next year.

My Dream, My Passion is to by no later than the end of season 2013 have this club in a position to win the First Grade Premiership Flag.

NOT ONLY because it would feel good, NOT ONLY because of the success but because it would mean that we have succeeded in getting a group of young men to be;

• Committed;

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2010 Annual Report 5 • To work hard; • To do what you say you will do; and • To establish life long relationships.

These are called values and they will carry you in the rest of your life away from football.

My question is: “ARE YOU GOING TO BE THERE TO RAISE THE PREMIERSHIP FLAG?”

Brendan Donohue President 2009

VICE-PRESIDENT'S REPORT

I was privileged to be asked to fulfill this role at the club. Having began my playing career nearly 40 years ago with Penshurst and having an active role in Junior football as a coach and administrator over the past 11 years it was time to move on to Saints, yet still maintain a positive connection with ALL St George junior clubs.

Without our junior clubs, the senior club would not exist.

Our numbers for the Under 18’s were strong; some boys would miss out on playing regularly this year. A working relationship was established with Southern Power and Moorebank in that players who were not selected with Saints in a particular week were then given the opportunity to play in the Challenge cup on a weekly loan basis

Our Under 18’s performed well this season and many played in the senior teams. In fact • 21 boys played with our reserve grade side; • 11 boys played 1 st Grade, including 4 who were 1 st year Under 18’s (born in 1993); and • 5 Under 16’ played Under 18’s this year including a 1 st year Under 16 (born 1995).

I am proud of the fact that in our 2 nd last game 21 out of the 22 First Grade team had played their junior footy as St George locals.

Junior Grand Final day was held at Bangor and congratulations must go to the Tigers for a well organised event. It was good to see so many past and present Saints turn up to watch the stars of the future. Congratulations to the Premiers in the following Grades:

Under 11 Miranda Under 12 Cronulla Under 13 Miranda Under 14 Bangor Under 16 Cronulla

St George Junior representative teams from Under 12’s to 16’s performed very well and many boys gained higher representative honours in being selected for the Pigeons at the NSW State championships for Under 13’s through to Under 16’s.

Wet weather didn’t help our plans for Saints players to return to their junior clubs when we had our mid season break, but it was good to see many players assist Bankstown juniors one session at Kelso.

Many thanks go to the 18’s coach Geoff Axford, manager Steve Lowden and Football Manager John Addison for looking after the younger players. Also to Shane Demir and Vincent Stevens for giving the guys the opportunity to play senior footy and gain experience.

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2010 Annual Report 6 Special mention to Gavin Bloor and Brendan Donohue in their off field efforts in helping the boys become better citizens and looking towards their future employment.

Ross Bowen Junior Vice-President

SECRETARY’S REPORT

There are 3 components to the running of St George AFC, viz, Management, Football Operations and Administration. The reports for each of these components appear separately in this Annual Report. The primary role of the administration is to give effect to decisions of the Management Committee through-out the year and support the Football Operations during the term of its training and playing programme.

In the execution of these duties there has been liaison and interaction with the AFL, Hurstville Council, the local community as well as schools and Junior Clubs in the Southern area. In the latter part of the year the Management Committee conducted a review of each of the components of the Club, using parameters set down by, as well as personnel from the AFL. That report to the Committee has been the basis of some changes at all levels of the organisation and in so far as they reflect on improvements to the administration, these are included in the body of this report.

PUBLIC OFFICER As an Incorporated entity there is a requirement to appoint a Public Officer who is primarily responsible for compliance with the relevant Commonwealth and State Legislation. The Secretary of most Clubs holds that position and this is the case for St George AFC. All those legislated requirements were met within the scheduled procedural and time limits. The AFL and regulatory authorities have drawn our and all other Clubs attention to changes that will affect the nature of reporting in the future.

LIQUOR LICENCE During the year St George AFC sought and was granted a Limited Function Liquor Licence. As Secretary I am the Licencee, a position held on behalf of this Club. By its nature the licence is limited in the main to the sale of liquor on a limited number of (home game) days and for the duration of the match and brief “after-match” social drinks. The granting of the licence will also meet the requirement of the AFL and enable the Club to progress in the performance rating against the AFL requirements.

MEMBERSHIP Membership of the Club has in years past included players at the varying levels as well as supporters who paid an annual subscription for which they received “a cap and a shirt” and the “right to vote”.

MEDIA While we were able to cover major points of interest as they arose, one of the short comings of the administration during the year lay in our inability to provide regular and timely copy to the local media St George and Sutherland Leader. The solution to this lies in having some person who has a small amount of IT talent to collect and condense the results of weekend matches into a simple format each weekend and to send (email) to the press on a Sunday evening.

REGISTRAR The functional role of the person keeping the register of eligible players is in the main completed by Easter each year and that person often retains an interest in the administration by becoming the Assistant Secretary. This year John Addison & Brendan Donohue and other committee members performed those duties, though it is clear that we need to have one person actively pursuing the tasks to “lighten the load”.

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2010 Annual Report 7

PROPERTY OFFICER In the absence of an appointed Property Officer, the task fell to the Secretary. This is not a particularly onerous role as each Team Manager generally runs their own race once the competition starts, around Easter. During the year and once again with thanks to Danny Dwyer, we have another white alternate strip which gives us more flexibility where clashes occur with other Clubs.

VOLUNTEERS During the year the AFL and the NSW State Government through Communities NSW, initiated a programme designed to identify roles that members of the community, not necessarily members of an existing organisation, might fill in not for profit organizations. Hurstville Council also promoted the same programme. This programme called “Hands-up” will be adopted in St George AFC. At our Club level, as usual, it was the parents of U18’s, particularly where the player has not yet “won his P’s”, who provided most of the early match-day support, though an old system, recycled after discussions last year with Wollongong Lions, saw the development of four (4) internal teams, made- up of players across all grades that provided an spark for a longer term process to shed the “volunteering” for club duties among a wider section of the player strength.

CANTEEN With the retirement of Fran McBride as Canteen Coordinator we adopted a three pronged approach, whereby the Secretary ordered and picked-up the product, Jenny Bloor and the U18 Mum’s prepared the salad rolls while Gavin Bloor and the Dads ran the BBQ. In the main the “4 team” system picked up the voluntary labour difference, though this will have to be fine-tuned before next season.

RELATIONSHIP WITH STAKEHOLDERS Family and Friends.

The AFL and NSW State Government have been keen to promote sport as part of community participation and in the Southern Sydney AFL region, St George sits atop of the AFL community and in the absence of a mature schools programme, the Southern Sydney regional juniors are the only base for support. Sydney South comprises the old St George and Sutherland Association covering the Local Government Councils of Rockdale, Kogarah, Hurstville and Sutherland and following the NSWAFL’s review in 1987/8 the Bankstown area. The region is bound to the East by the Pacific Ocean, the South by the Royal National Park and on other boundaries by other AFL zones and unlike the development areas taken-over by the GWS franchise such as Macarthur, Nepean and Castlereagh areas, it has little if any dormitory or Greenfield sites for further development. In the mid 1980’s the NSW Community Welfare Association surveyed the voluntary labour component in community welfare services to have an indicator of the “value” in $$$ terms of the voluntary labour being used in the community. As a rounded indicator that was put at three (3) times the recurrent costs of administering that organisation. At about the same time and for similar reasons the Sydney Junior Australian Council put the voluntary labour in one (1) team at 100 hours/week. Both bodies put the immediate impact in the community at between 4 and 5 times the number of participators.

While these surveys were conducted some considerable time ago, they are still good indicators of the interest that these stakeholders have in their community organisations. In the Report that directed Bankstown to the Southern Sydney Region, the basis for the current junior association, it was proposed that there be a minimum of 6 and preferably 8 junior clubs underpinning each 1 st Div. Club. While this was not achievable at the time and has been put to bed for the moment, seemingly for sake of the clubs that have no juniors, we need to realise that this may awaken at any time in any review of Sydney Football and, at all levels, we need to expect and encourage the formation of new clubs wherever and whenever the opportunity arises. For these reasons, and in the absence of a mature schools based programme, we must protect, nurture, maintain and develop these finite player and support resources. Similarly we need to continue our support for Colts level teams in our area and to extend that to Open Age teams in the Southern Sydney area. Indeed we should expect and encourage movement to and from colts and all age sides as player capacity dictates.

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2010 Annual Report 8

Past Players and Friends. As in the past we have held a “Back to St George” day and a Reunion Dinner, each with some degree of success, but from the mid-season administrative review it would seem that a little more ex-player structure needs be put in place and that will be the subject of the annual administrative workshop.

RELATIONSHIP WITH THE COMMUNITY The Southern Sydney Region covers many Federal, State and Local Government areas, with as many elected representatives. For the purposes of involving those levels of Government, the Club has opened relationships with the elected representative whose area covers Old’s Park and each of them, being The Hon. Kevin Greene MP Minister for Sport, Gaming And Racing and Member for Oatley, Daryl Melham B.Ec. Ll.B MP Member for Banks and Councillor Phillip Sansom Mayor of Hurstville have accepted rolls as Patrons of the Club and been very supportive in meeting with and supporting the Club during the year.

Since the relocation of St George AFC from Hurstville Oval nearly 50 years ago, (though the inadequacies of the playing surface), Aussie Rules has been the dominant user during the football season with both senior and junior groups using the facilities, while in more recent years the embryo schools participation has begun to show itself. Where ever possible the change room and Club facilities have been made available although the need to supervise other users is a time constraint. Old’s Park is becoming amore community used resource with not just other sporting bodies such as Cricket, Netball little athletics and Soccer, but also walkers and children’s activities. When requested by the Library we are also happy to open the Club facilities to book-club and similar library bases activities for children in the community.

Over past year, we have developed our relationship with Lions and other service groups to use the Club Rooms for a base and support for their community programmes on Old’s Park. This is not “spin” for the purpose of fattening-up an application for community funding, but actual services offered AND delivered. In years past there had been proposals to develop an Old’s Park Users group to develop the community use of the area and as a base for better leverage of those who the capacity to develop the resource. In the coming year it is proposed to redevelop this concept.

SOCIAL The three major socials of the year, the Jumper Presentation, Past and Present Player Reunion and the Presentation Night would have been considered successful by any judgment, but not with-out the constant haranguing of players by the Club President: A process that is simply not able to be repeated next year and must be replaced by either a n expansion of the “internal team” administration or an upfront levy to cover all similar activities, at the time of membership. In the past year, with three(3) games at Blacktown and with wet weather relocations of “home matches” it became increasingly difficult to organise socials, not only as after match drinks with opposing teams, but also to arrange similar functions at Maso’s Club, a strong supporting sponsor. These impediments to the social aspects of amateur footy were aggravated by the splitting of the Club “every other” week, sending half the adult footballers in a different direction to the remainder. During the year the “Danny’s ( Dwyer) Pie Night” developed into an arrangement whereby members of the Committee and Football Staff “put-on” a pasta night after training on each Thursday the Club had a home match. One blessing and a definite “plus” out of the difficulties with social organisation was Kieran Donohue stepping into the breach and assuming the Social Organisation for the latter part of the year.

FACILITIES At the end of the 2009 season a proposal was before Hurstville City Council to transfer the St George Club to Hurstville Oval, which it left in 1964 due to safety factors of the surrounding bike track and non-conforming dimensions. This proposal was contingent on a number factors, not the least of all the funds, being sought from the Commonwealth and State Governments as well as the AFL and Cricket NSW under the proposal that both sports have to jointly develop suitable oval facilities. In the end, “all the ducks could not be lined-up”. The major issue being that, while funds appear to have been available to bring the playing surface dimensions to requirements, the player/umpire and officials facilities could not be bought to standard within the funds available. In the result, focus shifted

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2010 Annual Report 9 to developing Old’s Park to AFL standards. While the Hurstville Oval position was under consideration, little attention was given to the state of Old’s Park, in the result that at the commencement of the 2010 season the playing surface was not up to standard for Premier Division football.

The Club held a number of meetings between the AFL Officers and our thanks go to Garry Burkinshaw and Joe La Posta in that regard, as well as Council management, both in chambers and at the ground that resolved the short term solution and set up a three (3) phase plan, to fit within Council’s programme, to bring the change-room/club rooms and playing surface to standard. Council has approved a development application and it is now up to the Club to find the funds. This is continuing.

IMPACT OF DIVISIONALISATION Divisionalisation appears to be a process whereby, promotion and relegation takes place in the evolving or contracting AFL clubs in Sydney. While it has not applied to Premier Division sides, i.e. the 1 st grade Seniors and Colts, it does, and has, impacted the reserve and lower grades within a Premier Division designated Club. Such is the position with St George ,(and I might add, other Premier Clubs), resulting in the reserve grade team playing at different venues to the seniors and colts on “away matches”, though the NSWAFL have been able to schedule all home teams at the same venue for “home matches”.

No doubt the NSWAFL had a vision, plan and Key Performance Indicators when devising this process. Further they will have evaluated these KPI’s against expectations, as they will have regularly scanned the football and community environment in which this process operates and conducted impact assessments of its impact particularly at this time when they chose to promote another non community based team into the Premier Division. As divisionalisation affects us at St George and for that matter teams we play against, I have listed some of the areas that concern St George and it’s management and administration. • Reduced patronage through the canteen as “third party teams” don’t stay around to “watch their mates”. At St George we have been able to offset some of this through an increased range of products and extended hour of operation; • Increased medical/physio costs when playing away from the rest of the Club; • A divided support base and associated loss of Club identity; and • Loss of flexibility in team selection in the event of belated illness or injury.

Doubtless these and other concerns, not only affecting this Club but others, will be addressed by the AFL in its regular reviews, but until then, members and stakeholders should be aware of these factors.

CLUB HOUSE MANAGEMENT Bob Sterling, with the assistance of Marcia, manages the Clubroom area, not only for general cleanliness but also for internal maintenance and functionality. It would seem that with the late Bob McConnell we have had “more than our two bobs worth”, or however that translates into decimals, The Clubhouse facilities are used not only by the St George Premier Division, but also by the Junior Club, Penshurst, whose “plant and equipment” relating to their training and competition are of a different standard and nature to that of a Senior Club: This aggravates the already limited storage. Many of the facilities and equipment such as the BBQ, stretcher and kitchen can be and are shared though there is always a need for coordination.

The facilities are also used, by arrangement, by the Library, local schools and community groups (Lions) at which either the Clubhouse Manager or Club Secretary attends. Similarly, though without need for supervision, Council staff use the facilities as needed for a “crib room” work - centre or shelter.

While the visitors change rooms become the club gym (dream room) during the off season the lack of storage in season is a problem hopefully addressed in the proposed improvements.

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2010 Annual Report 10

Of concern of late is the proliferation of access keys resulting in bodies other than those mentioned above using the facilities, often with gay abandon (can we use that phrase??). This matter will need attention in the new year.

Richard Orton Club Secretary

TREASURER'S REPORT It is pleasing to report that St George again made significant inroads into its outstanding deficit in 2010. This is in large part thanks to the tireless work of the Committee, in particular Brendan Donohue, Gavin Bloor and Richard Orton.

In July the club repaid a further $10,000 owing to the AFL and only one payment of less than $5,000 is due in July 2011. Other outstanding debt remains at $35,000 which is a significant burden but represents a huge improvement from where the club was at the start of last year. As was the case in 2009 the club incurred no new debts and has a bank balance of approximately $12,000 with and just under $10,000 in sponsorship due before the end of financial year.

Canteen revenues of approximately $16,000 were down significantly from 2009 even once the one off increase from the 2009 finals series was excluded. The impact of promotion and relegation has been felt across all club’s canteen revenues. Reserve grade teams which traditionally hang around and watch first grade play do not do so when playing away from the rest of their club. If they’re not hanging around to watch then they won’t be in the canteen spending money. Additionally in 2010 St George lost an entire canteen against Campbelltown due to last minute rescheduling of matches due to wet weather and the Balmain canteen was also significantly reduced due to similar circumstances.

Most pleasing was the signing of Presfast Pty Ltd as major sponsor for 2010 and a further commitment has been received for the 2011 season. The club was ably supported by the St George Masonic Club who is now a valued long term supporter. Significant support was also received from individual benefactors whose sole reason for contributing is to see the boys take the field each week.

Running a football club requires significant resources and without the sponsors mentioned above the club wouldn’t exist. The challenge for 2011 and beyond is to eliminate the club debt, grow and diversify the sponsorship base and build an asset capable of supporting the club well into the future.

Gavin Raper Treasurer

FOOTBALL MANAGER'S REPORT

I would like to congratulate all 3 coaches Shane, Vinny and Bear on the way they handled a very frustrating year due to injuries and relocations. This made selection of 3 competitive and balanced sides very difficult.

All this aside we made the finals again in U18s. First year and elite u16 players figured in our top group again.

A number of our u18s again were exposed to senior football and illustrated that they will be stars of the future. Congratulations to Bear on another successful year not only with what he achieved with the team but on his improvement as a coach.

Ressies had an unfortunate start with Avio having to step down. But to the Clubs advantage Vinny agreed to take on the job. Vinny’s enthusiasm and people skills created a team spirit that saw the side just miss finals. Although there were some games that simply got away, there were a lot of

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2010 Annual Report 11

results that had the club song sung as loud as I have ever heard. Vinny moved on positively after every game and never stopped and dwelt on lost chances. The boys responded to this and had an improved 2nd half to the season-

Shane moved into his second year as senior coach. As I have already said injuries were a major factor at the selection table and affected the performance of the team. Full marks to Shane and Minnie for not letting the situation overwhelm them; they had confidence in the selected team every week. Shane was always organised and this was tested with many training nights affected by the weather and Olds Park closed on a number of occasions. Shane’s contribution on the ground even with the pressure of coaching is still a bonus to the club.

The Club is proud to have had 3 coaches who have all worn the red and white into battle.

St George AFC values highly the access we have to the best collection of youthful talent in Sydney. Over the last 3 years the Club has rekindled the relationship with the local junior clubs. We have mended our image that had been tainted and now I feel our local juniors want to be a part of the red and white team of St George.

John Addison Football Manager

SPONSORSHIP & FUNDRAISING REPORT St.George AFC is the premier senior AFL Club for the Sydney Southern Regions representing over 1,100,000 people from Botany Bay to Bankstown and south to Heathcote. There are 7 Junior AFL Clubs in the area with over 1,000 players dreaming of wearing Red and White. A steady stream of new players, their families and friends joining St.George AFL Club life each year.

It is exciting to acknowledge that our club St.George AFC through its management team has positioned itself well to substantiate itself to potential sponsors and now looks forward to capitalising on all the opportunities a strong, well managed 82 year old AFL club can offer its corporate partners.

MAJOR SPONSORS St.George AFC wish to acknowledge the continued financial support by Danny Dwyer; our players look resplendent in their away strip; thank you. Also to Maso’s; thank you for your sponsorship and providing us with such an iconic watering hole and meeting place.

Directors of new Club sponsors Presfast Pty Limited have tabled this summary report for their inaugural sponsorship season;

“Compliments are extended to the President and his committee. The very management excellence that attracted our business to sponsoring the club has only been enhanced during season 2010. It is very exciting being associated with such a progressive club and the future is very promising. The benefits for Presfast have been fundamental, time is money. In the past it has always been difficult to find the time to access the constant requests for charitable donations. Now we have a system which consolidates donations into a substantial sponsorship that we know makes a difference to the development of our youth and future community leaders. As a time saver thanks to the St.George AFC we now have a positive response to all the organizations seeking charitable donations, “thanks but no thanks we are all ready committed to supporting our community’s youth through the mighty Dragons AFL club”.

DRAGONS DRAW The Dragons Draw for season 2010 was simplified to benefit associate sponsors. Thank you to all that participated and congratulations to all the winners. A directory of all the sponsors can be found on our website.

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2010 Annual Report 12

BUSINESS CONNECT This new St.George AFC business networking breakfast initiative was launched in season 2010.

Objectives of the meetings are to: 1) Develop career opportunities for players by exposing them to local businessmen. 2) Provide a dynamic relaxed networking opportunity for business. 3) Topical speakers on all things business.

This Business Connect concept has been successful in providing jobs for 5 players ranging from Hospitality work experience to Apprenticeships. The evolution of the meetings has been toward all things Red and White not just the extended St.George family. This fantastic development broadens the appeal and community relevance. However continued success will depend on the formation of a sub-committee to help run and maximize the programs potential.

PLAYER LABOR EXCHANGE Connections with the Green V’s Jones World Championship Boxing fight gave our players the opportunity to sell programs at the event, earn some money for the club and get to see the fight for free. This method of fundraising has been highly successful and underlies the potential the Dragons have as an organized labor exchange. More development work will be done in this area to exploit this opportunity during 2011.

HISTORICAL COMMITTEE – ANNUAL REPORT 2010

I refer all St George AFC colleagues to contents in 2009 Annual Report under this heading, regards background of operations of this committee and its charter. The aim of this voluntary body of people is to collect research and record the overall history of St George AFC. The make up and members of our committee has not changed during season 2010; names and contact points are shown below.

During 2010 the main achievements were as follows -

1 David Green - commenced conducting vast research in many different locations for background information on the book he is writing covering first 50 years of St George AFC – period 1928 to 1978. To progress this project, David and I met a few times during the year to collate, exchange information and correspondences, with assistance from records provided by Terry Heenan, for period 1958 to 1966, when Terry was St George’s “Publicity Officer” – see details below. 2 Scott Richmond - has been gathering information where he can from 2000 to present, regards any aspect of St George’s general Club and Football activities. 3 Bob Sterling - has been resourceful where he can, providing or certifying history and contributions, amongst all other activities he is involved with at St George.

During the year my contributions were a little down on past years activities, due to my health; now best it has been for years due to new drug I am injecting for the disease I have in my body. I was still able to conduct research and finalise files for a number of seasons, based on Terry Heenan’s structure – see below!

Terry Heenan’s Files – For the record; in May 2007 when we celebrated [the first ever] 1964 premiership reunion, was when I first became aware of Terry’s binders, which I now hold [Terry freighted these to me in late 2009]. They are a massive source of reference for period, approx 1958 to 1966; covering vital statistics and details on players and matches. They are a credit to Terry’s then recording & gathering of Club’s history. Terry was St George’s publicity officer, in an era when good daily/weekly publicity for Aussie Rules was provided in Sydney’s daily and local papers. Terry kept copies of all he had published, plus more!

I have since used Terry’s binders as the structure for recording all seasons we are researching and recording. I have compiled another six binders for various seasons outside of what Terry compiled; and the binders are all uniform! In essence we are gathering for St George a good compilation of history/structure for each season prior to 2000 [when I left Sydney for the Gold Coast]. Post 2000; we are relying on Scotty Richmond to compile and record.

One project not followed as proposed; placing historical content on St George’s web site, as is being upgraded and monitored by Brendan Donohue [along with many other responsibilities].

We welcome contributions from any person or party who may have the smallest piece of history relating to St George AFC. If any person would like to contribute in any way, please feel free to contact any one of –

* Bob Sterling 02 9771 6729 * Scott Richmond 0410 534 122 * David Green 0408 882 757 * Patrick McCourt 0418 273 594

Finally – thanks to Brendan, and his executive for the way they managed the Club during season 2010. A wonderful performance in planning St George’s path back to the top, where it belongs!

HALL OF FAME [HOF] COMMITTEE REPORT - 2010

I refer St George colleagues to content in this section in 2009 Annual Report, for background, workings and responsibilities of this committee. The structure of the committee during season 2010 remained the same as 2009; names and contact details are shown below.

As a committee, we adhere to a schedule of conditions and qualifications [set by Club’s Executive] any inductee has to meet to be considered for induction. We gather names for review; assess potential inductee’s qualifications and contributions to St George. Then submit names and their credentials for approval by Club Executive.

During 2010, colleagues with good qualifications, background and past services with St George were considered. As guidelines limit two inductions, and as Gavin Raper was away overseas, three committee members agreed on two colleagues for Club’s executive to ratify; Percy Symons and Michael J Clift were inducted. A brief summary of their achievements with St George AFC -

* Percy Symons Playing Career 1947 to 1965 Senior Games Played 235 Life Member [admitted 1961] Reserve Grade Premiership 1951 Reserve Grade Coach 1965 Reserve Grade Captain 1964, 1965, 1966

* Michael Clift Playing Career 1982 to 1997 Senior Games Played 205 Total Club Games 264 [includes 59 Third Grade ] Life Member [admitted 1992] First Grade Premiership 1993 Third Grade Premierships 1983 and 1985 SFL Leading Goal Kicker 1993 – 119 goals; 1994 – 95 goals Holds club record for most goals 119 goals [In First Grade in a season]

At the conclusion of season 2010 we now have a total of 18 colleagues who have now been inducted into our “Hall of Fame” since 2005 to 2010 [incl]. All 18 inductees are worthy of their induction; a great honour to bestow on a colleague. Their credentials speak volumes of their contributions during their football careers and present involvement, where possible, with St George AFC – refer list of HOF Inductees under Life Members in this annual report.

Structure of our committee , three of which are HOF inductees –

• Tony Quinn – President contact # 0421 057 741 • Bob Sterling – Member contact # (02) 9771 6729 • Gavin Raper – Member contact # 0424 232 467 • Patrick J McCourt – Secretary contact # 0418 273 594

As Secretary, it is my responsibility to coordinate the actions of the committee, under directions of my fellow committee members, which is assisted by my involvement with the Club’s Historical Committee. We invite St George members and colleagues to submit names to us for assessment and consideration as; we may not be aware of, or may overlook the credentials of a possible HOF candidate.

Comments

This is the first time we have included this heading in our annual report. Another aspect of reporting on history of St George AFC, in the Club’s approach to have the best professional presentation, covering all areas of operations of any Club in SFL!

2010 Induction – Bob Sterling - St George AFC was successful with Bob Sterling’s induction during 2010; a reward for a well credentialed St George colleague. Bob’s football record speaks for itself! Bob’s ongoing weekly activities, contributions are the passion he has for supporting his beloved St George AFC, post football career.

Past inductees include -

• Colin Harris – holds club record for most number of Club games @ 347. A premiership player in 1964 – played in losing Grand finals 1965/1966. Won B & F 1960 - First Grade Capt/coach 1960/1961/1962 and coach 1965, 1966 and 1970. Leading Goalkicker 1951. St George Hall of Fame inductee 2005.

• Anthony ‘Tony’ Quinn – His Phelan medal win in 1993 was complemented by being a Premiership Captain and player and 1993 B & F winner, one of four times he won a B & F. Quinny captained the Club 1992 to 1996 [incl]; 2007 St George HOF inductee. A representative player; one of the best local juniors to ever play with St George.

• Simon Wilson - whilst playing with St George was a premiership player [1993] – won B & F [1997] same year as winning Phelan Medal – coached First Grade 1998 to 2000 [incl]. Then transferred to North Shore where he was again a premiership player and premiership coach. His combined contributions at St George & North Shore led to Simon’s induction.

During 2010 we also submitted Geoff Green for consideration for induction and in past years had submitted Syd Felstead and Bob McConnell. For political reasons and present guidelines as Syd and Bob were not prominent players, they cannot be considered for induction. We have been advised the guidelines are under review, to include administrators and others.

If I may say; without the past efforts and contributions from Syd and Bob to the cause of Australian Rules throughout Sydney and NSW we would possibly not have some of the present structures we all enjoy in this great game. Both Syd Felstead and Bob McConnell are Life Members of NSW AFL. The above are my personal views; not those of St George AFC.

If any person would like to contribute in any way or nominate a colleague for consideration, please feel free to contact me.

SENIOR COACH'S REPORT 2010

This season has been another challenging one for our club in which we played 50 players in the senior side this year, 11 of whom were still under 18 and 5 being in their first year out of under 18’s.

Our results were not the best but this may also reflect that our work rate was not up to scratch.

Both seniors & reserves results were disappointing, unfortunately, due to the lack of experience, commitment and several injuries. Overall things did not go as planned.

We suffered badly from injuries with 9 strong senior players missing most of the season whilst 2 others (Bennett & Maddern) did not play a senior game. This meant that a number of players got an earlier than expected opportunity to play senior football which also created a loss of numbers to our second & third grade teams.

I believe that we all (players & coaches) will have learnt a number of valuable lessons during the course of the year. This together with the big number of players that tasted senior football this year should assist us in our endeavours next year. For us to go forward as a club we need to take action with what we learnt this year and not just talk the talk.

I would like to thank Minnie my assistant for all of his hard work and advice during the year and Kevin Wilsen who certainly made my job as a coach easier. He never missed a training night. I would also like to thank Vinny who started the year off as a player and then committed to coach the seconds just before the season started. Finally thank you to my professional runners Jamie, Scoot (who stayed involved after a serious injury) and Vinny.

Last of all I look forward to seeing all players at pre season training in preparation for season 2011. Let’s put in the hard work and make it the YEAR OF THE DRAGONS.

Cheers

Shane Demir St George Dragons Senior Coach

RESERVE GRADE COACH'S REPORT

2010 was a tough year by all accounts in reserve grade. Initially there was to be another reserve grade coach that was organised prior to the beginning of the season. Unfortunately due to personal commitments he was unable to coach the first six rounds of the season, and subsequently I was asked to assist. It was to be my first time coaching, and ultimately it was a rewarding experience.

Due to the poor numbers of players at pre-season training it was no surprise that the results of the first few weeks of the competition were a little disappointing. After some help from others around the club including the first grade coach Shane Demir & the father of one of our players Mark Maunder, the boys fitness improved greatly and our first win was achieved in round six.

The original coach was to return the following week, and I was offered the coaching job for the rest of the season, which I happily accepted. Throughout the year I had a lot of assistance from others around the club including Shane Demir, Al Pandelis, Mark Maunder, Scott Richmond, Geoff Axford, Kieran Donohue and Patrick McBride. I would like to formally thank them for all their help throughout the year.

There were over seventy players that played for the reserve grade side during the season, and with this amount of player turnover it was quite difficult to maintain consistency. Having said that there St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2010 Annual Report 17 were a few players that excelled and they are well represented in the team awards. As the season progressed there were many positives from within the playing group and a lot to build on for the coming seasons.

With the calibre of a number of players that passed through the side during the season and a number of promising juniors, I have no doubt that our reserve grade side is more than capable of returning to Division One and challenging for a premiership there. This will not come easily and requires discipline and hard work from all involved which was lacking at times.

One huge positive for the year was the introduction of Adam Pearsall to AFL Football. Having never played before, he started the season slowly but improved dramatically to take out the Best & Fairest award. If he continues improving at this level, I look forward to watching him play First Grade next season.

With a better structure next year and some of the U/18’s being available for senior football, I look forward to the future success of the St George Dragons in all grades.

I want to thank everyone involved for giving me the opportunity to coach and the assistance I received, and hope that one day in the future I can repay everyone with a premiership.

Vinnie Stevens Reserve Grade Coach

UNDER 18 COACH’S REPORT

2010 had one priority. Stop the slide of our ressies. While this took a little longer than desirable, I would like to thank to all the ressies players who stuck with it and to the 18’s who provided support all year. Vinnie took the job under difficult circumstance and has reaped the reward for his persistence. He also put the body on the line when required.

This year started with great optimism following on from a very successful 2009. With a list of 36 players and about 16 backing up from 2009 the ultimate goal seemed to be beckoning. We soon however encountered the effects of a very long club injury list, player development in seniors, support for the ressies, the couple of long term 18’s injuries and GWS and other rep duties. At our low point we played a vital game with only 21 players. (we lost). Despite all this we toughed it out, came up with two great wins mid season and were on track for the finals.

The 18’s are an important part of the clubs direction. The memorandum of understanding with Moorebank and the Power took a lot of effort from Brendan and Rosco and put the club in a good light now and into the future. I have mentioned the Ressies priority and I am very proud of the clubs success in this matter. We took 3 U16’s and made them an integral part of our team and watched proudly as they performed as leaders for their clubs at 16’s finals time. We know the work they put in with us this year will see them hit the ground running in 2011. Addo and Rosco continued to forge the link with our Juniors. This work is vital for the club and no amount of help will be too much to make it work.

The positives for the season were many. Making it to equal 3rd spot and ending up with a finals berth, thereby satisfying our team goal for 2010, was great. Showing that we can beat all our opposition was a great boost. Pity about the snag with Sydney. Undeniably the best thing again was the support from everyone for the 18’s. I know this gives the young players a feeling of belonging and recognition for their hard work which then ensures they will be back next year.

The negatives were few, but ending in the first week of finals was hard. Sydney’s weather again intervened especially late in the season when we were trying to ramp up for the finals. The draw denied us points, % and goals. Of the bottom three sides we played only UNSW once. We did however play all the top sides twice. As they say you have to beat them all to win the flag. Finally, it took a while to get some of the young players on the senior football wavelength but we got there in the end.

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2010 Annual Report 18

Thanks firstly to Brendan for his great leadership and especially his 2013 flag goal. Please everyone give it everything you can to make it work. Love the chats with Richard on all things football even if it means we lock up a little late on Thursdays. Thanks Kev for your whistling. Thanks John and Rosco for the great work with the juniors. Thanks to all the Physios for their efforts in a year that was difficult for them and to the rest of the coaching staff, especially Shane for his leadership. Thanks to all the parents and all the great supporters of the 18’s in 2010, to Gadget for his late return to the 18’s coaching staff and finally to Steve for his commitment, passion and enthusiasm all year. Everyone at times needs a shoulder to cry on.

In summary boys please plan your football year and give appropriate priority to your fitness. You can’t serve your team or yourself fairly if your fitness is lacking. We need more players with elite fitness to make a big impact in 2011.

Let’s build on this good year, I hope I’m part of a successful 2011.

Thank you everyone.

Bear (Geoff Axford).

SYDNEY AFL RISING STAR

Rd 5 - Blake Guthrie

A stellar performance in St George's win over Wollongong earned Blake Guthrie the Round 5 AFL Sydney NAB Rising Star Nomination.

Blake played a major part in St. George’s win against Wollongong last Sunday. His work rate around and inside the stoppages was skilful and courageous. His second half contribution ensured that the Saints finished strong enough to take the game from a determined Wollongong side.

Blake had played the previous two weeks with the Swans Reserve Grade side and his decision making with his disposal under pressure has improved as a result.

Blake started playing AFL at Bankstown Sports JARFC when he was 11 years old, playing all of his junior football with the Bombers. He was lucky enough to have a “home grown” role model to follow, in Dylan Addison, who was just starting his rise to senior AFL.

Playing primarily as a midfield/on baller, Blake has enjoyed a stellar junior career, his achievements including selection in the St George and Sutherland Junior Reps, Zone for Pigeons, Sydney Swans Academy at 13, NSW Combined High Schools at 15 (receiving a NSW “Blue” Award), and a RAMS squad member at 16.

Recently turned 17, Blake is now in the second full year of a scholarship with the Sydney Swans under the NSW Scholarship Program. He was a member of St George’s Grand Final U18s side last season, and is one of a host of local juniors grasping the opportunity to step up to seniors this season.
