www.sydneyafl.com.au FROM THE EDITOR

It has been 196 days since held aloft the Bill Hart Premiership trophy how- ever all that will be forgotten this weekend when the 2011 AFL competitions com- mence.

It has been a hectic pre-season with many new and exciting developments taking place.

Luke Turner has taken on the role of Football Operations Co-ordinator for AFL Sydney. Luke comes from Coffs Harbour and we wish him all the best in this position.

On-field, UTS have been promoted to the Premier Division after being a dominant force in the lower divisions over a number of years. Given that the club is just 11 years young. There inclusion means that there will be eleven teams in both the Premier Division and the Division One competitions.

Overall 79 teams have nominated for the 2011 competitions, this is an increase of eight teams from 2010 and for the first time we will have a Division Five competition which means there will be six senior competitions and two Under 18’s competi- tions. With promotion and relegation taking effect all competitions look as though they will be keenly fought.

Highlights of this weekends opening round of matches include East Coast Eagles raising their 2011 Premiership flag prior to the Grand Final replay with Sydney University at Bruce Purser Reserve. UTS will make their Premier Division debut against arch rivals UNSW/ES at historic Trumper Park. Western Suburbs will also make a return to the renovated Picken Oval when they host St George. North Shore are at home to (formerly ) whilst Pennant Hills and Balmain Dockers will do battle under lights at University Oval as part of a Super Saturday.

2011 will also see the commencement of the North Eastern Australian Football League (NEAFL) which will involve teams from Canberra, Queensland and Northern Territory as well as the GWS Giants and the , and reserve grade sides. It is anticipated that in 2012, AFL Sydney will be represented in this competition. The NEAFL has been established to significantly enhance the pathway for players and the opportunities for clubs in the ACT, NSW, QLD and NT.

East Coast Eagles will also be representing AFL Sydney in 2011 Foxtel Cup. The Foxtel Cup is a knockout competition involving 16 teams from VFL (3), WAFL (3), SANFL (3), AFLQ (2), NT, TAS, Sydney, Canberra and GWS Giants. All matches will be televised live on Foxtel on a Saturday twilight with most matches to be played as curtain raiser to AFL matches. East Coast Eagles’ round one match will be against SANFL club Port Adelaide at the SCG on Saturday, 14 May. This is a fantastic opportunity and provides great exposure not just for East Coast Eagles but also to AFL Sydney.

Representative Football will gain have a major focus in 2011 with the senior representative travelling to Cairns to take on AFL Cairns whilst the Development team will take on Riverina FL at Newcastle. Both games will be played on the June long weekend.

A number of clubs have appointed new coaches and we wish them all well in what is a demanding, yet rewarding job. There are also a number of players and umpires who will be taking to an AFL Sydney field for the first time. I would like to welcome you all and wish you and your families an enjoyable time with AFL Sydney.

To all existing players and umpires, welcome back and I hope you have a successful and injury free season.

Finally to all the volunteers, who without their contribution our competition would not survive, I hope you have a fulfilling season. If you are reading this article and would like to get involved with your club I am certain they would welcome you with open arms.

Enjoy the footy.

3 Round 1— April 2-3, 2011 www.sydneyafl.com.au EDITORIAL UTS BATS ARE ON THE RISE

It is little wonder the UTS Bats have been elevated to premier division in 2011 given the commitment the club has put in over the past decade.

It’s not only the 16 grand finals the Bats have been involved in since their inception in 2000 – winning ten premierships – but it’s the way the club presents itself off the field.

The Bats have a culture. It’s been their culture ever since they were formed and it will remain their culture heading into their debut season in premier division.

Their culture is simple but effective: being a social, inclusive football club will result in on-field success.

“How the club started out actually ended up being something we’ve really protected and stayed sacred to the club,” Bats President John Colbert said.

“So the social aspect – the fun, the mateship side of it – has been something that’s been at the core of the Bats since the very beginning and to the point where it is actually our strategy.

“So our point of difference and positioning is that it’s culture before football and what that’s actually done is it has made us successful on the field because what happens is you build an environment that people love to be part of.

“You attract guys that just enjoy being around it, there’s great mateship and there’s a good sense of inclusiveness and belonging and as a result of that guys actually go out and do everything they can to be successful on the field.

“Who you are as a person is actually more important than what you’re like as a footballer.”

The Bats have worked tirelessly over the past two years to make sure their administration is of a high standard to compete with the other premier division clubs.

If their strong culture is anything to go by, it is only going to be a matter of time until the club holds up the coveted Bill Hart Cup.

“We’re going into the season with the belief and very strong view that the culture is still going to be number one,” Colbert said.

“We believe that we can be successful in premier divi- sion and ultimately win a premiership with the culture that we’ve got.

“It doesn’t detract from having a strong football focus and a desire to be successful. I’d like to think we can start contesting for finals in the next two years.”

4 Round 1— April 2-3, 2011 www.sydneyafl.com.au EUGENE KRUGER

Sydney Swans surprised many people when with their final pick in the AFL Rookie Draft they chose East Coast Eagles youngster Eugene Kruger to fill the final spot on their roster for the 2011 season. The records books will show that Kruger was taken as pick number 88 in the 2010 Rookie Draft.

What is surprising is the fact the Kruger,19 has only played Australian football seriously for less than two years.

Kruger came to from South Africa with his parents and younger sister in 2000, when he was eight years old.

At the time, his only language was Afrikaans, but he settled quickly into the Australian way of life and forged a promising junior sporting career in rugby union and athletics while at secondary school in Sydney.

Kruger was playing representative rugby and didn’t pick up an Australian Rules ball until he was 15.

"Coming from South Africa, rugby union is everywhere and that was my love. But then a few of my mates played AFL for Westbrook so they asked me to have a run around with them when I was 15. I played about 10 games but it was just social,’’ Kruger said.

But after he finished Year 12 at Sydney’s Barker College, where he had been in the First XV rugby team, Kruger decided to spend more time playing the Australian game.

"I love the camaraderie of AFL and being here at the Swans. I love the fact that the game tests you mentally and physically in so many ways. I just like every challenge that is coming my way at the moment. The unpredictable nature of the game is what attracts me most.’’

He played U18s at East Coast Eagles, and then played in the senior side in the Sydney football league in 2010, helping the Eagles to the premiership.

He also played a few games as a top-up player in the Sydney Swans Reserves, kicking four goals in one game and bringing him to the attention of Swans coaching staff.

In October, Kruger was asked to train with the Swans and a month later he found himself a rookie-listed player.

"I was nervous when I first came down to train but I’ve worked really hard to get this one chance,’’ he said.

"When John Longmire told me they were going to put me on the rookie list, I smiled so much I was a bit embarrassed. I was like a kid in a chocolate factory!’’

Kruger impressed the Swans with his standards of fitness which was highlighted early in the New Year when he won the club's gruelling 3km time trial in a time of 9min 51sec, finishing just ahead of last year's AFL rising star winner Dan Hannebery.

"I am really happy with my fitness and it is helping me push forward with improving my skills," Kruger said at the time.

"My main focus is to learn the game plan and just absolutely try to put 100 per cent effort in to my skills. I want to get up to scratch.

"My main aim is to improve and soak up as much information as I can. I am still young to the game ... I am trying not to put my mind on a senior game now. My aim is to just improve."

"I have had a chat to Lewy [Roberts-Thomson]. What he has been through is so inspiring. It's amazing the different footy players they have at the club. It's a great mix. It's just awesome."

I'm loving it," Kruger said. "It all came around really quickly. Everyone has made me feel really welcome. It's just awesome."

Kruger has played on the half-back flank and on the wing and the Swans' coaching staff have been impressed by his athleticism and ability.

Kruger will spend the season honing his skills for the Sydney Swans Reserves who will play in the newly formed North Eastern Australian Football League.

Kruger comes from a sporting family. His sister, Zane, 16, is the number one ranked tae kwon do player in Australia, and his mother Valme was a top ranked 800m runner in South Africa.

5 Round 1— April 2-3, 2011 www.sydneyafl.com.au

6 Round 1— April 2-3, 2011 www.sydneyafl.com.au PLAYER PROFILE JON VLATKO—EAST COAST EAGLES

How was the club’s pre-season?

It’s been pretty good. Numbers have been good and we’ve had a couple of trial matches against the Swans and some hard fought internal trials so everyone’s fitness levels are pretty good. After winning it last year we had a bit of a break but we all got back into after Christmas and it’s been great.

Are there any signs of a premiership hangover?

There wasn’t one last year so I wouldn’t think there would be one this year either. We’re aware of expectations but at the same time it’s business as usual. We’re a pretty professional unit so we don’t really worry about last year now – we worry about this year.

Do you think the club can claim their third straight flag?

I think we can, but we need to work hard and keep improving. If we don’t then we’ll find another side that is improv- ing beside us. So we’ve just got to keep improving each week.

What will the team need to do this year in order to win the flag?

It’s just a matter of keeping professional both on and off the field. We’ve just to continue to improve. We’ll have a couple of young players this year coming through the mix. We’ve had a really good under-18 side over the last couple of years so they’ll need to learn as they go, which will be challenging. The success that we built around the main leaders of the group will need to remain and if we can all pull our fingers out then we’ll be a chance again.

Eugene Kruger joined the Sydney Swans at the end of last year, does this provide some extra incentive for up and coming players progressing through the system?

Over the years, we’ve had Michael Johnston to Hawthorn and last year Kruges [to the Swans], so it does give players that option that if they actually work hard and commit themselves it doesn’t matter what competition you’re in – you’ll be seen. Credit to Kruges, he just worked hard every day to achieve that and he finally got there and the Swans see that value in him. So it’s a matter of everyone believing in themselves. You’ve got the Swans who are around the corner and you’ve got GWS coming on board so a lot of the young blokes know there’s another level above.

The club will be playing in the inaugural Foxtel Cup this year, is this something the club is looking forward to?

It’s very exciting. Playing against Port Adelaide is going to be a very big challenge but one we’ll definitely enjoy. We kind of feel as though we’re representing AFL Sydney so we really want to put on a good show – espe- cially on the SCG.

Which four other clubs do you think can make this year's top five?

You’d think Sydney Uni will be around the mark again this year. You can never write-off Pennant Hills or North Shore. I think you’ll find Balmain will improve out of sight this year.

Which other club is most likely to reach the Grand Final?

You’d probably have to say Sydney Uni at this stage based off how they went last year.

Who do you think will win the 2011 Phelan Medal?

I’ll go Jamie Vlatko

7 Round 1— April 2-3, 2011 www.sydneyafl.com.au 2010 NAB AFL SYDNEY RISING STAR

Ryan Bottin-Noonan—Campbelltown

Campbelltown youngster Ryan Bottin-Noonan has celebrated a stellar first season by being named as the 2010 AFL Sydney NAB Rising Star Award.

Bottin-Noonan spent most of the year playing at Centre Half Back with the respon- sibility of containing the oppositions best forward and he completed this task with aplomb. He was also able to provide plenty of counter attacks for his side with his hard running through the middle of the field.

The 18 year old's year was highlighted by selection in the AFL Sydney Repre- sentative side which played against the Victorian Amateurs and also in the AFL Sydney Team of the Year.

To be eligible to win the NAB AFL Sydney Rising Star the player must be:

• Under 21 years of age; • Play a minimum of four Premier Division matches during the season; • Be in his first full season of senior football (i.e. Played less than four senior matches in AFL Sydney or equivalent competition prior to this season); • The weekly award winners are nominated by their clubs and awarded accordingly on their performances over the previous weeks • The NAB Rising Star winner will be determined by AFL Sydney Pre- mier Division Coaches from the weekly nominees.
