EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

GUS SEEBECK

Dear Members, Supporters and Friends,

There's little doubt that season 2009 will be judged a huge success by all reasonable measures. After the best part of nine long years, the East Coast Eagles finally realised our ultimate goal by winning the Club's first Premier Division Grand Final in emphatic style. This success was the result of an enormous amount of hard work, dedication and sacrifice from many people, both on and off the field. It was a long time coming, but I'm sure everyone will agree it was well worth the wait!

One of the things I love most about playing football and being part of a football club is that it exposes those involved to a vast spectrum of emotions, often at a relatively young age. These emotions can have a lasting impact and we are forced to process and deal with them, often with very little preparation. Football teaches us how to handle criticism and how to lose, whilst 'keeping our heads up' and sticking together as a team. Conversely, it teaches us how to win with grace and humility and how to enjoy life's great highs, knowing full well that they are moments to savour and don't last forever.

In the near ten years since our incarnation as the East Coast Eagles, those involved have experienced just about every emotion. We've won almost every award and accolade there is to win from Reserve Grade and U/18 Premierships to the Club of the Year, League medals and more. We've also experienced the other end of the spectrum languishing at the bottom of the ladder, collecting the wooden spoon and losing Grand Finals in every grade. We've won games by 1 point and by more than 100 points and lost games by 1 point and more than 100.

Throughout this time, however, there remained one elusive feeling - one emotion that the club was yet to experience. That of the sheer jubilation and euphoria which reverberated around Blacktown Olympic Park when the final siren sounded on Grand Final day and the realisation began to sink in that after so much hard work, dedication and sacrifice, we had finally realised our dream.

The seeds of this success were planted many years ago. The vision of previous Boards and Directors to work tirelessly towards acquiring our own home ground, Bruce Purser Reserve, that we all showed off with great pride at the AFL NAB Challenge game earlier in the year. I believe it's no coincidence that our first year with a ground to call our own also coincides with the current level of success. I'm also very proud to say that despite the heartache we felt over the last three years losing two Grand Finals, at no stage did we as a club point fingers or look to apportion blame to others. We all took responsibility and stuck together knowing we were on the right track and with continued hard work, success was not far away.

Throughout the pages of this report, many people will be identified and thanked. Each of these acknowledgements is thoroughly well deserved. Personally, I would like to thank my fellow Board Members, Craig Abercrombie, Mark Pinchen, Phillip Bester, Chris Ford and Martin Tolar for their wisdom and experience in helping to oversee the Club's direction and governance. I would also sincerely like to thank all our valued sponsors, especially our Premium Sponsors PMA Solutions and Base Course Management. I would like to echo the words of many others through this report and thank all those who gave up their time to volunteer throughout the year and help to ensure our match days and other functions were such a great successes. ______6 ______2009 YEAR BOOK

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. I'm very pleased to report that the club remains in a strong position off the field as well as on. We remain debt-free and will return a modest profit in 2009. We have a robust strategic plan in place that will enable us to build on the successes of the year.

My lasting memory from 2009 will be the way our club united after the final siren on Grand Final day. The emotion and joy we shared was so significant because we all knew how long the journey had been. We knew how much had been sacrificed over so many years. We have all ridden the ups and downs together and in the end no victory is real without having those who are most important to us there to share it.

Finally, I would like to sincerely thank my beautiful family, Laura and Ella for allowing me to take so much time out of our lives to dedicate to football.

My most sincere congratulations to all involved with the club. Here's to the next ten years of hard work and to the successes we will share together.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. OUR MOST VALUED SPONSORS

CRAIG ABERCROMBIE Director of Marketing and Sponsorship

In late 2008 we remembered what, at the time, was the most successful year that the East Coast Eagles had experienced. We had three teams in the Grand Final, celebrated a Reserve Grade Premiership but unfortunately, lamented an opportunity lost when beaten in the senior Grand Final. It would be another year of planning and preparation that would hopefully see us get another rare opportunity to bring home what this club so desperately wanted…

The rest they say is history, and needless to say, 2009 has been our most successful year to date. This Year Book will be filled with rightful congratulations and the first ever senior Premiership will be remembered and relived long after we are all possibly able to.

It is a cliché, but this year possibly more than ever, could not have been achieved without the tremendous support of so many who give time and money to ensure this club achieves the success it aspires to. There is no questioning that the corporate support that the East Coast Eagles enjoy is second to none in the league and envied by not only our own community, but also by those from other sporting codes.

In 2009, I am so glad that this club has been able to reward those who support us with a little piece of Premiership history.

Once again, our sincere thanks go to Phil Okill and his outstanding team at PMA Solutions. PMA have been the premium sponsor of the East Coast Eagles for five consecutive years. It is this level of commitment that has helped this club achieve the results it has and we are forever grateful.

It is a pleasure that the Eagles have been able to reward Steve Gawley and Base Course Management with a piece of premiership glory. Steve’s commitment to this club goes well beyond financial support and the scenes of celebration in the stands from Steve will always be a great memory of mine. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

And speaking of support and celebrations, there come no better in both categories than Maree Gawley and the fabulous support from Profiler Sales and Service. Maree, you are simply the best. There was no escaping your support during the big game and I would like to think that at least two of the big fella’s goals can directly be attributed to you. I am so glad you are on our side.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. With our new home came a new partner in the Mean Fiddler Hotel. The Mean Fiddler has welcomed the Eagles in 2009 with arms wide open. It is so great to have the facilities of the best hotel in the country available to us and this was proven with the success of both our Jumper presentation and Grand Final luncheon.

To Brett McCall and his team at the Mean Fiddler, thank you and we look forward to a long and prosperous association.

Our match day sponsors took things to a new level this year as we were (finally) able to welcome them to our real home at Bruce Purser Reserve. And it was so great to see them make it their home as well. To John Geary and his team from Wirtgen , thanks again for “backin’ up the profiler’ for our successful retention of the Warren ‘Pops’ Quintrell Trophy.

To Jan and Peter Barber from Coulton Isaac Barber Accountants, thanks for your ongoing support in 2009.

To Deb and Kevin Whiley, thank you for packing up The Beauty Shack and bringing it down to Bruce Purser for the day. It was fantastic to be able to offer footy and facials to our members in 2009.

And to Gary George and the wonderful support from Gary George and Co. Lawyers, thanks for once again choosing to join us as a match day sponsor this year and also for your wonderful professional support.

Swans Limousines joined us in 2009 and there seems to be no limit to the generosity of Greg and Jean Bell. Swans Limousines not only took sponsorship of the BPR scoreboard but continued their support with many great offers for our auction and other prizes. We look forward to a great future with Swans Limousines and the Eagles.

In 2009, we welcomed back a sponsor with a new look. Tony and Gayle Moran continued as our match ball sponsors in 2009, but with a new brand. A great big thank you to Aussie Home Loans, a wonderful partner we are proud to have. I may never be able to say thank you enough to you …. especially Gayle.

Kings Transport continues to be a great partner of the East Coast Eagles. To Michael Sankey and his ever growing team of Eagles, thank you.

Also, to Richard Blagrove and the crew form Kleen Heat Kwik Gas, thank you for your support and initiatives in 2009.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc.

Norwest Tint-a-Car joined us in 2009 and a big thank you to Ian and Joan Francis for once again choosing to support us.

Also, thanks to Melanie Morson and the Directors of The Castle Hill RSL Club who are amazing supporters of community sport in the Hills area. And to C2K gym and especially Matthew Corringham, thank you.

Finally to a man who, in his own words, “gave the Eagles a horn in 2009”. Glenn Johnston has a wonderful way with words and even though his blood once ran maroon and gold, it has turned a bright blue and gold. Stockwells Joinery Pty Ltd were great sponsors of the Bruce Purser Reserve siren (or horn!)

I realise that the last paragraph started with the words finally, but the support of the East Coast Eagles really has no limits. In 2009 our player sponsorship program saw an unprecedented number of supporters join us in our maiden Premiership year. To all the supporters below, a big thank you.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. In 2009, the Eagles were able to offer permanent perimeter signage at Bruce Purser for the very first time. The club would like to thank the following companies for their support.

We also thank the NAB for their very generous sponsorship of the mid season ECE Golf Day played at the Long Reef Club. A great day was had by all ….

Much like a football team, each of our partners played their own special part in the club’s success in 2009. We look forward to your ongoing support as we look to continued success and growth through 2010 and beyond.

On a personal note, I would like to thank my fellow Board members for their support in 2009. It has been such a joy to work with you all as we start to implement many of the plans we have set for the successful future of this club.

Also, to Anthony Dignan, thank you for playing your part in the success and best wishes in your future pursuits. The club will need to grow and learn to survive without your expertise.

To Rowan Bilkey, thanks for bearing the brunt of my rants and generally being a sounding board throughout the year. Well done on your success, you deserve it.

Of course, this club enjoys the financial support of many wonderful companies, but it is also the invaluable time given by so many volunteers that creates the success we enjoyed in 2009. It is impossible to name all and I know that many of you will be acknowledged properly in other parts of the Year Book. Needless to say, to you all, congratulations on becoming the Premier club in 2009. To coaches, managers, trainers, players, physios and every cog in the wheel of this great club, well done on yet another successful season.

To my girlfriend Natalie, thank you for affording me the time to spend with my beloved Eagles. I don’t think you really understood what I was talking about when I said I was “involved” with a little local footy team. I look forward to a couple of free weekends over summer.

As you may all know, 2009 has been a year of great change and challenges for the Abercrombie family. This club has been my family’s passion for 25 years and has given back to us more than we could ever give it. To all of you who have shown us great support through the year, thank you. There has been no prouder moment than to see Rosscoe drinking from a Premiership cup, a memory that will stay with me forever.

Now I don’t mean to sound greedy, but now that we have tasted our first Premiership there seems only one thing to do… One More Eagles!

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc.

STRATEGIC PLANNING

MARK PINCHEN Director of Planning and Development

The year 2009 will be regarded as one in which dreams were realised; the new ground and our first Senior Premiership flag. In the brilliance of these results it would be easy to overlook other achievements – the Swans v pre-season game and the inauguration of our ‘Thirds’ senior team are notable as additions to 2009’s successes. To cap it off we have grown to have 166 players run out in East Coast colours this year, compared to 126 last year!

To some outside the club it may seem as though these things ‘just happen’, but we are very mindful of the hard work and dedication that has been needed. We have faced challenges and have done our fair share of learning in the transition from a ‘nomadic club’ to a club in possession of the enviable asset that is Bruce Purser Reserve and being well placed to thrive. In all this we remain clear that our success is the product of effective planning and consistent effort on the part of a great number of people throughout the club, and that it is these things which will be the basis of our continued success, as well as the means by which we will go forward and grow as a club.

Some of you may remember the planning day in November last year. It was attended by the following people who gave up their valuable weekend time for the benefit of the club:

Craig Abercrombie Chris Ford Peter Mack Alan O’Connor Phil Bester Glen Garner Ryan Madden Peter Physick Peter Bleus Jon Gawley Dianne Mann David Polkinghorne Rowan Bilkey Trevor Hangan Peter Mann Gus Seebeck Anthony Dignan Ron Heathcote Alan Moeller Peter Steer Jason Duss Liz Holmes Tammy Moeller Julie Whale Liz Duss Richard Lee Tony Moran Peter Whale

In broadening the knowledge and experience thinking about the requirements for Season 2009, this day provided a number of positive initiatives that were to prove crucial in the successful season that has just been completed. Possibly the most significant being the action plans set in motion for the canteen, match day organisation, and the on-going management of the ground & facilities at Bruce Purser Reserve. In particular a great deal of thanks is owed to Julie Whale, Tammy Moeller and Peter Physick who took these actions forward from the planning day and made them work.

It is this sort of work that is serving us so well in the pursuit of our purpose: “To be the leading club in the Sydney AFL, delivering on-field success and providing a positive experience for all involved”

No one should believe we are yet fulfilling this purpose to the extent possible, but we are making significant gains in the five key success areas that frame our strategic plan.

• On-Field Success – Development, growth & performance of the player base

We have our first senior flag and the ‘Thirds’ are now an established part of our club but, arguably as significant for our future as anything else, is the fact that we have had 40 more players this year wearing the East Coast strip. This means we have a stronger, broader pathway from U/18 football to seniors, one ______13______2009 YEAR BOOK

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. that will promote the depth and development of our playing list. In turn, this underlines the importance of quality processes and structures to support on-field management and performance; and of ensuring that they are well understood, seen to be fair and remain appropriate to the needs of the club and its playing list.

• Administration – The governance of the club, including its Board, rules, policy & procedures

The loss of a full-time General Manager posed a significant challenge for us. The Board very quickly went from being a governance body to a management committee – concentration of that workload on a part-time group is not something that can or should be sustained. As a result, five new committees will be instituted in the coming weeks. Some will formalise existing structures that have grown to meet the needs of the club, others anticipate what will be needed to manage and grow the club going forward. These committees will be for Match Day Management; Sponsorship & Membership Development; Facilities & Ground Management; along with a Social Committee and a Canteen Committee. The role descriptions for these committees can be found on our website & participation is keenly invited.

• Resources – Personnel, coaches, grounds & infrastructure needed to field teams

The depth and breadth of our volunteer base remains central to the success of East Coast Eagles. It might not have seemed possible, but the number of people who have volunteered their time and effort has increased from last year! Unfortunately, there are still a number of people upon whom the workload falls disproportionately. While this can be maintained in the short-term, it is not something we should accept as being the norm. Spreading the involvement, workload and responsibilities will need to be a focus for 2010. This is partially the reason for the introduction of the committees, but it will also require us finding ways to make it easier for people to do the tasks for which they volunteer – further development of checklists, role descriptions and other aides are all part of making it easier and less burdensome to volunteer. In short we need to learn from the experience of this year.

• Community – Access & influence we have in our community to promote and support our club and code

This is probably the area that has been given the least amount of attention in 2009, with the focus of energy and effort being mainly internal on finding our way at BPR. We have arrangements with alliance clubs which saw U/18 players going back to their ‘home clubs’ to participate in Junior Club training and U/16’s being invited to train with the U/18’s. Kellyville also ran Auskick sessions and their juniors were given access to the rooms during senior matches (Thanks to Trevor Hangan for running with this). These are areas we will continue to develop.

Never-the-less we need to do more to engage our stakeholders in the life of the East Coast Eagles. Our sponsors and the East Coast / West Coast relationship are two priority areas as we turn our attention outwards from the running of Bruce Purser. In 2010 we plan to be more proactive in providing value to our sponsors and we will be implementing an agreed action plan with West Coast to build more mutually beneficial links that will reinforce and enhance an already strong relationship.

• Operating Imperatives – Those fiscal imperatives needed to sustain operations now and in the future

The financial position of the Club is addressed elsewhere, but 2009 has been financially successful. We must not however, lose sight of the fact that the financial demands of a home at Bruce Purser Reserve are significant – a profitable canteen and the success of key events (like the Swans v Western Bulldogs match) are demonstrative of the way we must utilise BPR to earn revenue in support of our requirements.

Hand-in-hand with the increased complexity of our finances is the need to structure our accounts and reporting systems to provide the necessary transparency of up-to-date information. Consequently we plan to structure our budgeting and accounts to make stronger associations between the funds raised and the cost of raising them (profit centres), as well as introduce more robust budgeting to make a clear

______14______2009 YEAR BOOK

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. association between the physical requirements of our teams and the cost of their equipment and resources (cost centres).

In these five key success areas, East Coast has achieved a significant measure of success. In achieving the milestone of winning our first Premiership flag, some say we have “got the monkey off our back; we can relax.” I disagree. Good clubs don’t relax, they enjoy the success, but then look to do better.

In establishing ourselves as a community-based football club in Sydney’s Hills District, we need to continue to set ourselves a standard of excellence that rivals, if not exceeds those normally expected in more noted operations. This realisation underpins our strategic plan now and for the future so, as our creed declares, we will continue to, “…know no boundaries”.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. FINANCIAL

PHIL BESTER Director of Finance and Administration

Firstly I would like to give a huge thank you to anyone who volunteered throughout the 2009 season. With a new facility and an extra team, a lot of time, effort and money were needed to ensure we would continue to be the leading club in AFL Sydney and it is due to these wonderful people that this was achieved.

2009 has been a year of more challenges that even I expected. It started with us hosting an AFL pre season match and due to the efforts of many it gave the club a much needed financial boost at the start of the year. However for us to continue to keep our heads above water, we will need this type of support and the continued support of our wonderful sponsors for us to pay our debt to the AFL for the ground.

To all who helped out in the canteen and BBQ (Ron Heathcote and Jon Gawley) you can be proud of the fact that you contributed to a very profitable resource, as we almost doubled what we budgeted for in profit. This is mainly due to the great work of a few people and to all of those who Julie Whale thanked in her canteen report, I also would like to acknowledge and reiterate her comments.

A huge thank you must go to Julie and her family for their help in managing the canteen. A lot of work takes place during the week to make sure we all run to plan on the day. I also would like to thank Trevor Hangan for his efforts to help sell items on Thursdays and clothing on game day. To those who set up, (and usually pack up) on home games, well done. You go above and beyond.

To the players I ask that you support the volunteers as much as possible, as without them you will not be able to play football.

A huge thank you to our sponsors, who Craig Abercrombie has thanked in his report. Thanks also go to Craig and Rowan Bilkey for once again providing the “best in the League” productions which they continue to provide to us at no cost to the club.

Thanks to Anthony Dignan for his work this year and his help since his role was made redundant.

Congratulation to the Seniors on delivering what has been so hard to get for the Eagles over many years and well done to all who contributed in their own way both on and off the field.

Thank you Deidre Mack for her outstanding work in collecting all U/18 membership fees and thank you to all U/18’s for paying so early.

For senior players please be more proactive in the future as it is not an easy task trying to continually chase players for payment. Fees are crucial to the club and are still very cheap in comparison to other sports.

A financial statement will be made available at the Annual General Meeting, with full financial reports available once the accounts are fully audited. After starting the year with a lot of unknowns, assuming all outstanding debts are paid, we should finish in a healthy position financially again this year. This will enable us to implement detailed planning into our growth at BPR and make a dent into our debt to the AFL.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. The last two years have been satisfying in knowing I have contributed to helping the club run to its potential. With the General Manager position no longer in existence, the club needs all members and supporters to help as much as possible. For five months of 2009 I have been unemployed and during that time there would not be a day that I haven’t spent time on football tasks, but it is now time for me to let someone else take over the reins and I will be finishing at the end of this year.

I would lastly like to thank my beautiful girlfriend, Renee who has not only had to put up with all the hours I have spent on football this year, but also spent many hours volunteering in the canteen as well. I appreciate your support and thank you so much for your help.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. NORWEST ALLIANCE

ROWAN BILKEY

2010 will see a new zoning policy introduced to the AFL Sydney competition. Essentially, each Premier Division club will be allocated a number of junior clubs within their region from which to draw new players. Every junior player from within that zone, should they choose to continue playing our game once they graduate from U/16’s, is obliged to play for the club that they are aligned to.

So what does this mean for the East Coast Eagles? The Eagles, along with the Norwest Jets and Holroyd-Parramatta have been allocated the following junior clubs: Baulkham Hills, Kellyville / Rouse Hill, Hawkesbury, Winston Hills, Quakers Hill, Parramatta, Blacktown and St Clair. Above all else, it means that the Eagles will need to establish, continue and strengthen our relationships with these clubs.

Throughout 2009 we had 60 players representing the U/18’s. More than half of the squad were new players to the club, and a third had progressed directly from U/16’s at one of our proposed 2010 feeder clubs. Considering that Baulkham Hills fielded three U/16’s teams in 2009, with their Division 1 side playing in the Grand Final of the Northern Sydney competition, and the Norwest Eagles and St Clair finished in the top 5 in the Western Sydney Competition, there is an abundance of talented juniors running around in the Hills area. It is our club’s responsibility to ensure that these players view East Coast Eagles as an attractive environment to continue their football.

While in 2009 energy was focussed primarily on finding our feet at our new home, relationships with junior clubs were not given the full attention that they deserve. However, this does not mean that efforts were not made. Throughout the year, U/18 players twice returned to their junior clubs to assist with training and give an insight into the step from junior to senior football. In July the Castle Hill RSL held a junior football clinic and invited the East Coast Eagles to assist with the running of the day. Five senior players helped run the clinic on the day … some were even seen signing autographs afterwards.

The Norwest Eagles joined in with our U/18 training on four occasions. Junior players from the Kellyville Magpies were given access to the rooms during senior Eagles matches throughout the year. And of course, there was no better sight that seeing Kellyville juniors hang around after their own training on a Tuesday night to watch the big boys run around on Bruce Purser Reserve.

A concerted effort in 2010 to nurture our relationships with our local junior clubs is vital to the long term success of our club. Over a third of the 2009 senior premiership side were local juniors. There is no reason why this number cannot increase in the future.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. CANTEEN REPORT

JULIE WHALE

In our inaugural season at Bruce Purser our vision for the canteen was to serve tea coffee and soup in crockery mugs and to provide a variety of quality food at affordable prices. I am proud to say we achieved all of this and still made a substantial profit.

We were fortunate to share the canteen with the Kellyville juniors. Our thanks and best wishes go to their canteen manager, Fiona and the Kellyville Magpies for their support and co-operation throughout the season.

Our first few home games were at times a little trying, especially when we ran out of food and various supplies. Then we got into the swing of things and there was no stopping this team!

The culinary delights of homemade cakes and soups added the spice and icing to our picturesque sporting venue. There are so many who were so giving of their time. Our thanks to the many club supporters who baked and assisted at each home game.

By the end of the second half of the season, every club knew and marvelled over Ron’s fabulous Eagle Burgers.

Not Ronny Heathcote, but Mick Bowles on the barbie ….

At our early games, the order for bacon and egg rolls was faster than the speed we could unload the supplies from the cars!

We received compliments from both local and visiting club players and spectators and were told we were the ‘Best Canteen’ in the competition. Not bad for our first season at Bruce Purser!

Special thanks should go to Kerren Gatte who meticulously organised and labelled the canteen cupboards and storeroom. Kerren worked tirelessly at every home game and often midweek, to ensure the canteen was adequately stocked and ran smoothly.

It was also a pleasure to work with Phil Bester and Renee who would often be at the ground by 7am and not leave till very, very late. Thank you Renee for adopting our footy club and for your help throughout the season. It was greatly appreciated.

A special thanks to Philby who is not only the ‘Male’ face of the canteen but also the Director of Finance and Administration for the club. He was always only a phone call away to assist with food ordering and rosters. Last, but not least, thanks to Melissa who assisted with the shopping at Campbells and was always on hand to provide support where ever it was needed.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. BRUCE PURSER RESERVE

PETER PHYSICK

Leading into last year’s finals, the East Coast Eagles were training at the local showground, in and amongst an on-site circus and its inhabitants. This had been the venue all season and it was certainly not the most conducive environment to winning a Premiership. History shows that the Club failed in its second attempt to win an AFL Sydney Grand Final in 2008.

However in February 2009, the Eagles took possession of their brand new home at Bruce Purser Reserve and things began to fall into place. $6.9 million dollars had been spent on the new facility and in the words of that famous movie ‘Field of Dreams’, “If you build it, they will come”, life at the Eagles suddenly became a whole lot different. Not only did the Club finally have a home after 10 years of nomadic existence, members and supporters flocked to the ground for home matches.

With the complex situated as it is in the Rouse Hill development area, many local residents, who presumably weren’t AFL fans before, became attracted to the game. Dozens of new families appeared on the terraces and the mounds, providing East Coast with a brand new fan base and most importantly, a host of new junior supporters. Night games under the 500 lux lights were particularly popular in the moderate Sydney climate and our best attendances were achieved in televised matches against local rivals Pennant Hills.

We now had a pre-season training home, the Swans had chosen to play a NAB Challenge Cup match against the Western Bulldogs, opposition Clubs requested permission to play home games there and at season’s end the venue was used for some finals matches. Sponsorship income increased dramatically, as did revenue from catering and canteens. The scene had been set from an admin perspective and the Club then anxiously awaited the on field results from the squad assembled by senior coach Glenn Garner.

Those results are covered elsewhere in this Year Book, however suffice to say Bruce Purser Reserve was a huge contributor to that Premiership success, as we knew it would be. That pot of gold under the rainbow was just waiting for us.

The first season saw some challenges when the winter rye grass didn’t take properly, leaving the surface appearing to be uneven once the couch grass browned off in mid winter . However that has been fixed for 2010 with Council completely re-sewing the rye grass, which will provide the “SCG like” surface we had expected.

More spectator mounds are needed, as are nets at each end of the ground behind the goals. Dialogue to achieve these has started with Council, as has the planning of the East Coast Eagles Social Club to cater for sponsors, members and supporters. Initially we had assumed we would build the Club adjacent to the canteen, with that spacious area deliberately left vacant to achieve that aim in the future. However building a second storey across the wide expanse of the current facilities block now appears to have favouritism. There is still much to be done before any construction can commence, not the least of

______20______2009 YEAR BOOK

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. which is receiving planning approval from Council and more importantly, raising the necessary funding to facilitate construction.

Kellyville Rouse Hill Magpies were excellent co-tenants in our first season and the working relationship with President Keith Leggett and his committee was a major factor in the smooth running of our first season. As were the North West Sydney Hurricanes Cricket Club under President Aaron Lewis who cooperated significantly in allowing us to use the complex for the full pre-season whilst it was in “summer mode” for cricket. We were also able to stage the major event of the Swans v Western Bulldogs NAB Challenge match on March 7th with cricket’s cooperation in moving a scheduled match to another venue. Aaron Lewis scoring the first ever "ton" at Bruce Purser in September 2009. In conclusion we once again thank the Hills Shire Council for their foresight in acknowledging the growth of AFL football in Sydney and the Hills district. In particular we extend our sincere thanks to Simone Francké, the permanent grounds person at BPR who has devoted countless hours to ensuring the ground could be in as good a condition as possible for football. As much as Simone thinks we are pretty good tenants, we think the world of her.

Oh, and we need a flagpole ….

DAVID ELLIOTT

November 2009 will mark the tenth year of the ground breaking partnership between West Coast and East Coast Eagles and it is clear to me the continued success of this relationship is testament to the hard working ECE individuals who are the lifeblood of this AFL Sydney powerhouse.

After spending most of the last decade as nomads we are thrilled ECE can now claim residence at Bruce Purser Reserve, the first East Coast Eagles home ground of AFL class. This historic transition is a massive improvement from the disjointed playing arrangements of the past and I share your enthusiasm in the vital project finally reaching completion.

Season 2009 was an exceptional year for ECE, thanks to the leadership of first year chairman Gus Seebeck whose talent is not limited to the off field management of the club. Ten goals in a Premiership match and finishing the year with 111 goals is an immense feat, well worth the Rod Podbury medal for best on ground. Congratulations Gus on a terrific achievement and the significant impact you have had at ECE.

Undoubtedly the 54 point victory in the senior’s Grand Final was the result of the coaching skills of Glenn Garner, the on field leadership of Captain Jon Vlatko and the gutsy effort of the determined squad. Witnessing the power performance, with the loyal supporters shaking with excitement in the stands, was a highlight of my involvement with East Coast. West Coast can be proud of our association with such an exemplary example of leadership, professionalism and passion.

Young Jack Dimery truly demonstrates these values; as such we were proud to announce Jack as the recipient of our sponsored award, the ‘Eagles Rising Star’ for 2009. At just 16 years of age the local Baulkham Hills boy has already played 19 senior games for East Coast and scored a senior Premiership medallion; an amazing effort.

Special mention must also be given to the Reserves squad for making their fifth consecutive grand final. Three out of five Premierships is an outstanding accomplishment and I am confident this year’s result will only drive you to further success in season 2010.

The bond we have with East Coast was continued this year in January when we had the pleasure of hosting Coach Glen Garner and players Ed Wilson and Damien Bowles to spend four days with our coaching team. The hospitality was then repaid on May 14th with Peter Sumich attending the East Coast Thursday night training session and team selection, with ‘Suma’ greatly appreciating the camaraderie of the group.

Then on Saturday the WCE Sponsors Golf Day at Camden Lakeside Country Club was significantly enhanced with the attendance of Gus Seebeck, Anthony Dignan, Tony Moran from Aussie Home Loans, Scott Gatte, Peter Mann and Glenn & Michael Johnston which proved to be a valuable networking opportunity for all involved.

I must acknowledge the tireless work of Steve Gawley and Peter Physick who are essential components to the ongoing success of our relationship. Also many thanks to Anthony Dignan for his time at ECE and best wishes to ‘Digs’ and family with their new venture.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. VOLUNTEERS

TAMMY MOELLER

Season 2009 was always going to be a year of learning as we finally moved into our own home ground facilities at Bruce Purser Reserve. The East Coast Eagles are rightfully now the envy of every other Sydney AFL Club with the best facilities available not only for us, but also for our visitors... and a Premiership to boot!

Each home game requires a large number of volunteers to make it run smoothly, and at East Coast we are fortunate indeed to have so many willing and able parents and supporters who are prepared to put their hand up to help out. At away games too we need support to get our teams on the field, and I thank everyone who followed our teams wherever they played, to ensure we filled the necessary volunteer roles at all of our games.

Thank you for doing your bit with ground set-up, ground managing, team managing, timekeeping, umpire escorting, goal umpiring, boundary umpiring, water carrying, physio and medical support, stats, video recording, amenities duty, canteen and BBQ duty, ball retrieval and ground pack-up. Thank you all for your help throughout 2009.

George Acland deserves a medal! George was our Central Umpire for all but one game of our U/18 Challenge Cup team this year. Well done and thanks George.

Forging a relationship with the Kellyville Magpies also proved beneficial as a few of their young guns helped out with boundary umpiring responsibilities this year. Lachlan, Cameron, Arin, Matthew and Josh are to be congratulated on their contribution at the East Coast Eagles this year. We look forward to their continuing support in the years ahead. Thanks boys!

Another idea for Season 2009 at Bruce Purser was to provide fruit for the umpires. This was greatly appreciated amongst the umpiring group as they all wanted to come back to BPR, not only because of the fantastic ground, but because of the East Coast Eagles hospitality.

I would like to thank the Board, in particular Chris Ford, Craig Abercrombie and Mark Pinchen (and Anthony Dignan in the early part of the year) for their support for me as Volunteer Coordinator this year. I have enjoyed being part of such a fantastic Club with so many wonderful people who don't hesitate to help out if asked. Our volunteer base has grown in 2009, which has helped enormously as far as filling the necessary roles is concerned. We have certainly learned a great deal as new tenants at Bruce Purser this year and we look forward to improving in various areas next year and beyond. Umpires’ escort – Maree Gawley

Congratulations to the Premier Division on winning their first Sydney AFL Premiership.

On a final note, I would like to acknowledge and thank Peter and Laima Physick. Dreams do come true!

MEDIA AWARDS

A sporting club can do everything in its power to promote its purpose, its contribution to the community, its sponsors and in our case, the code of AFL Football, but nothing succeeds like the power of the media.

In 2009, we were fortunate to engage the enthusiasm and support of two entities to further spread the word about footy and the East Coast Eagles.

At the 2009 Club Champion Night we acknowledged the contributions to our success of Michael Vettas from Michael Vettas Photography and Pranesh Nageshwar from the Hills Shire Times.

Michael Vettas

Michael was appointed by AFL Sydney to capture professional images of matches involving all Clubs in the Premier Division. His superb work is displayed on line at www.saflphotos.com.au Michael very quickly came to grips with how to photograph AFL football and having seen the quality of his picture taking, it quickly became apparent that East Coast could benefit from a partnership with him.

Agreement was reached with MV Photography for them to provide all photos taken at matches involving East Coast for use on our website, in this Year Book and for distribution to local newspapers. Photo selections, together with Peter Physick’s match reports, were sent to the local press each week on a Sunday evening.

There is no doubt that the high quality of photos supplied were significant reasons why we were able to get such excellent coverage at a local community level.

Pranesh Nageshwar

The local community are now very much aware that the East Coast Eagles are specifically a based Hills Club, despite their more generic football descriptive name. It was important to create an awareness campaign in the neighbourhood and the biggest ally to us in that regard was Pranesh Nageshwar, the Sporting Editor of News Limited’s Hills Shire Times. Pranesh also introduced us to their sister publication Rouse Hill Times which also provided great coverage.

The only week we didn’t receive major space with club story and photos was when there was no football because of the Representative game against AFL Canberra. True to Pranesh’s form however he went with the headline of “Seebeck sensational” to keep the Eagles in the forefront of readers’ minds.

We look forward to maintaining the association with the Hills Shire Times in the seasons to come.

The Chairman’s Award was created to recognise the significant contribution to the Club’s wellbeing, by any individual who gives more than could ever be asked for. In a Club the size of East Coast, there is any number of candidates who would be worthy winners.

But each year someone always stands out …

And in 2009, that person is Tammy Moeller.

East Coast has always had a large base of volunteers as the club traipsed its way around Sydney for 10 years whilst playing at numerous different “home ground” venues. But with the inclusion of a fifth team and the move into Bruce Purser Reserve, it became apparent that some concentrated and dedicated attention needed to be given to the recruitment and coordination of the huge number of volunteers who would be required to run the show.

Tammy immediately put up her hand to take on this enormous task and set about drawing up a total season roster covering every conceivable duty that would be required. And more were added as the year wore on.

On home match days, Tammy arrived early and went home late having controlled the operations and paperwork at the official desk, as well as vocally supporting her husband Alan in his occasional forays in Third Grade. Whilst training nights saw Tam cleaning everything that needed to be cleaned, ably assisted by her partner in crime Liz Duss.

Congratulations to Tammy Moeller – a very worthy recipient of the 25th East Coast Eagles Chairman's Award.

A club is only as good as its people. Be they players, coaches, administrators, managers or supporters. We have many such people at East Coast who happily provide their assistance in a variety of ways. Some do it financially, others do it with time. Some do it with both.

With the move to Bruce Purser Reserve this year some enormous logistical issues confronted the Club to ensure that we made the best of our brand new complex. The canteen was but one of those and it loomed as a major revenue raiser if it could be set up and operated as our members, supporters and visiting spectators would like.

Julie Whale put up her hand instantly to volunteer her services to be the canteen ‘boss’ and get it set up to a standard that all would be proud of. Significant planning went into securing the items needed, given that it had nothing to start with. Not even a coffee cup existed, nor were any of the other basics there that we now take for granted.

The first big test was the Swans v Western Bulldogs match and considering that we hadn’t played a game at BPR yet, nor run a canteen, bar and food outlets to trial the set up, it worked perfectly thanks to Julie and all the volunteers we had on the night. From there you could say it was all downhill for the rest of the season. However there was still much to be done on a weekly cycle to ensure that the initial high standard was maintained on a consistent and regular basis. Julie covered off all that in a breeze.

The proof of any individual’s work comes from the regular and unsolicited observations from our own supporters and those of visiting clubs who often commented about the high quality of food and service from Julie’s canteen team. Certainly the Financial Director of the Club appreciated Julie’s efforts with the canteen providing an income way beyond the original amounts budgeted for the season.

It certainly goes to show that if you run a business with hard work and a smile, it pays off for all concerned.

Congratulations to Julie Whale our 2009 Club Person of the Year.

The leading Goal kicker in the Club was for many years awarded to the player who kicked the most across all our grades of footy, no matter where they played, or how often. In 2001 it was changed to recognise First Grade senior goals only.

In 2009 the Leading Goalkicker is Gus Seebeck with 111 goals for the season.

Reserve Grade Ash Moeller (32) Under 18’s Premier Cup Damon Steer (58) Third Grade Jared Patira (10) Challenge Cup Stuart Tibben (12)

Gus has won his 4th Leading Goalkicker title at East Coast in 2009.

And didn’t he do it with a flourish!

The luxury of keeping Seebeck at full forward the whole game allowed Glenn Garner to set his match plan accordingly, knowing that the strongest marking forward in Sydney football would grab most of what came his way.

Unfortunately Gus missed out on the official “100 goals in the season” when he finished Round 18 stuck on 97. However 14 goals in two finals matches (and a Premiership) more than made up for any disappointment he may have personally felt.

A remarkable 10 goals in the Grand Final sealed the Bulldogs’ fate and he became the first East Coast Eagle to kick 100 goals in a single season.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. CLUBMAN OF THE YEAR

Perpetual trophy donated by Tint•a•Car Norwest

This award had always automatically gone to the winner of the Best & Fairest trophy in First Grade. The Club Executive chose to introduce revised assessment criteria from 1999 onwards, thus allowing any East Coast player to win. This trophy will now be awarded to that player who displays exemplary form both on and off the field in relation to overall Club contribution. Up until and including 2006, this award was titled Footballer of the Year.

All footy clubs across Australia have fine people. People who make it their mission in life to ensure that “their club” is the best. East Coast is no different to any other.

The Eagles have many such people and to receive acknowledgement as Clubman of the Year can be humbling because potential candidates do not set out to win such an award. They just turn up at every training night, match day, social occasion and working bee simply because it is the right thing to do for their club.

Tim Jenson epitomises what a footy club is all about. There is nothing he can’t, or won’t do if it means that his club can be one step closer to achieving the ultimate aim. The fact that East Coast won a Premiership this year is due in no small way to Tim’s 24/7 efforts to help where he can.

The accompanying picture demonstrates just a small part of the varied tasks he took on this year. Throw into the mix his enthusiasm, his generosity and his cheerfulness and it all adds up to a powerful recipe for others to follow.

Highly popular with the club, all members will be delighted for Tim and his acknowledgement as the 20th Clubman of the Year.

PREVIOUS WINNERS

2003 Luke Stanford 2004 Trent Goodrem 2005 Brad Ure 2006 Phill Entwisle 2007 Anthony Stubbs 2008 Michael Johnston

A truly fairy tale season unfolded for Jack this year.

The 16 year old Baulkham Hills junior was trialled in the pre season matches to see if he had the goods. 19 senior matches later, with a Premiership medal around his neck, everyone agreed that he did!

‘JD’ was an extraordinary find and his penetration and pace from the wing was a revelation for such a young footballer. His season has been capped off by winning the West Coast Eagles sponsored “Rising Star” Award for 2009.

Already acknowledged by Geelong with an AFL Scholarship, Jack has plenty more to give as he continues to learn with every match he plays.

“He is as good a kid as I have ever seen in Sydney footy”, remarked Glenn Garner. “I first noticed him in the time trials in January when I realised he was up there with Shane Ryan and Brad Ure”.

“For a lad who is that young and to play the style of game he plays, is remarkable”, continued Garner. “JD is very steady under pressure and performs beyond his years. His attacking footy is as good as his defensive abilities. I gave him some major ‘run with’ roles to play on key opponents in the finals and he succeeded admirably”, said Garner.

We congratulate Jack Dimery on his selection as the seventh West Coast Eagles Rising Star of the East Coast Eagles AFL Football Club. ______34______2009 YEAR BOOK

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. FOOTBALL OPERATIONS

CHRIS FORD Director of Football

The East Coast Eagles were established in the year 2000 as a Senior Club originating from the Baulkham Hills Falcons. It is with great pride that we have now captured our first Premiership flag as East Coast Eagles following an outstanding performance defeating the UNSW – ES Bulldogs with dominance across the whole ground. Executed by a team who turned up to play and were not going to let the cup slip from our grasp. Congratulations to the coach Glenn Garner, assistant coach Michael Sankey and captain John Vlatko in leading a committed group to the ultimate prize.

The Grand Final score was:

East Coast Eagles 22.12 (144) UNSW-ES 13.12 (90)

This is representative of the enormous success we have had on and off the field and is a deserving reward recognising the efforts of our players, sponsors, volunteers, members and supporters. All of whom have contributed to this significant milestone and deserve to celebrate the fact that East Coast Eagles are now “PREMIERS 2009”.

In support of this ultimate success were over 160 players who pulled on the Eagle jumper. Through weight of numbers, East Coast increased the number of teams competing in the competition by the inclusion of a Division Two team. This resulted in having five teams on the park each week, which we did successfully with the Division One side (the Mighty Twos) reaching the Grand Final for the fifth successive year and the U/18 Premier Cup side also making a semi finals appearance.

Congratulations to the coaches and managers of all teams on a job well done, as all efforts contribute to the success of our club on and off the field. We now have the depth of players most clubs dream about.

The year 2009 will also be remembered for the opening of Bruce Purser Reserve which, after many years as a nomadic club, gave us a home and permanently places us in the Hills as a major sporting entity with outstanding facilities. Even better …. a Premiership flag to run up the flag pole.

It has been a long year with lots of new challenges as we built volunteer structures and learnt how to operate and manage the new facilities. Our success could not have been achieved without the help of some key people who undertook crucial roles in us evolving as a club. An example of our ability to deliver was the ownership and delivery of the ground operations associated with the AFL pre-season game between the and Western Bulldogs. This was a huge success at Bruce Purser with well over 4,000 people in attendance and demonstrated the ECE club capability to a broad community.

It is important to recognise Tammy Moeller as Volunteer Co-ordinator. Tammy has been crucial to the club organisation of the army of volunteers who all gave their time generously to allow the players to compete week in, week out with a minimum of disruption. Working with Tammy has been Deidre Mack with co-ordination of the U/18’s volunteers who are an important part of our club and continue to grow in strength. Both have been outstanding in the organisation and execution of their roles which are often demanding and certainly consume large amounts of time.

Another area where ECE have shown leadership within the league was the appointment of an umpires’ coordinator with a view of not only facilitating the umpire requirements week in week out, but also begin work around developing local talent to increase the umpire pool for the betterment of the AFL game. George Acland has undertaken this role in a very constructive and low key fashion and built solid ties

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. with the Kellyville Magpies Junior AFL club in the supply of boundary umpires and George recognises David Arndt for his organisation. As an initiative ECE have supplied a link to the AFL Sydney umpires’ website - a first for a senior club and we will continue to promote umpiring in NSW. The club also created a first by supplying fruit and refreshments to the Umpires on game day. This was a real treat and was very much appreciated by the umpires on the day.

We are very fortunate to have had a long association with Sports Physio Norwest who provide exceptional medical coverage for all our teams and was this year headed up by Nathan Halliday. This highly skilled group has been significant in our success through their efforts in covering all teams every weekend, no matter the location or grade. The enthusiasm with which they have worked their magic has been greatly appreciated by all involved.

• Kathryn Warr & Joanna Graham - Physio students who were responsible for strapping at every training session and provided for both the Premier and Challenge Cups for the U/18s. Their skills and enthusiasm were fantastic and greatly appreciated by all the players.

• Sam Ennis - 3rd grade physio. Having been around the club for several years now, the players highly regard Sam’s skills and are very appreciative of her time, effort and knowledge to allow the best possible injury management to be able to play every week, often in trying circumstances.

• Sarah Bailey - In her 2nd year at the club as physio, Sarah confidently approached her role and was well appreciated by everyone. She has a good rapport with all the players and coaches and was vital to the overall success of the senior teams.

Supporting the Sports Physio Norwest team are the other medical personal - Rudi Bylsma and Brian Lawler who helped out with strapping and massage on game day and were invaluable to the club’s success.

Lastly, recognition must be made to Anthony Dignan who was our General Manager until the role dissolved midyear. A large part of the successful position we are currently in, both on and off the field, is due to the effort he put in over a number of years. His recruiting, financial management, club passion and day to day operations prior to the structural change have been significant and as a Club, we wish ‘Digs’ and his family all the best in their new endeavours in Victoria.

Overall a stunning year in any terms of measurement, with a new ground, five playing sides, exceptional operations, outstanding player facilities and support, large loyal supporter base, excellent sponsors, volunteers, three sides in the finals, First Grade top of the ladder and finally the 2009 senior Premiership.

Thank you all …. and as a great man has always said, “One More Eagles, One More”.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. UNDER 18’s – CHALLENGE CUP

Coach – Ryan Madden Manager - Jamie McNeil Captain – Mitch Dinan

TROPHY WINNERS

Best and Fairest Adam Hutt Jaren Serdar Coach’s Award Paul Mildwater

Played 16 Wins 5 Losses 11 Final position Sixth

When I look back on season 2009 for the U/18 Challenge Cup side, I find it extremely difficult to put all the successes of the team into words. It was the most successful season for the East Coast Eagles Challenge Cup when you look purely at the number of wins (5) but there were so many more successes than just purely the games won.

In some ways it was a frustrating season in that we could have been a lot closer to the top four when you consider that we lost five games in a row by a margin of less than two goals. This included a loss to the eventual premiers Sydney University, who had been a class above every side all year, by just one point. If we had managed to turn two or three of these games into wins, the end of the year could have been very interesting as we may have pushed for a top four spot.

I learnt very quickly that there is a lot more to the Challenge Cup side than just winning games. For many of the players it is just the opportunity to run out each week and have a kick with their mates. For some it is a stepping stone to playing in Premier Cup and eventually senior football. As the year went on I realised more and more how much of a development side the Challenge Cup side was. As an example, in our final game for the year against Parramatta, every player, except for one, was under 17 or younger and this truly shows where the future of the club lies. It shows even more how successful we were as every week we came up against clubs where we were playing their best U/18 side.

The 2009 Challenge Cup side has unearthed a number of new players to the game. Inclusion within this team has given them the opportunity to learn the skills of the game and I am very hopeful that these players will continue in 2010 as they have all showed sufficient potential to develop into future players of the club.

From a pure numbers point of view we always managed to field a side of at least 18 players each week and it was only on two occasions where we had to rely on top up players from local juniors. I would like to thank Geoff Newson and the U/16’s from Baulkham Hills who helped us out on these occasions and to the Nor West Eagles players who also offered their services during the year. ______39______2009 YEAR BOOK

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. We had a number of players who made the step up to Premier Cup during the year. Jaren Serdar, Tom Kitto, Kyle Healy, Mitch Dinan and Stu Tibben were all a part of the Premier Cup side at some stage during the year. And on the flip side there were a few players who returned from Premier Cup either through form, injury or a pure numbers point of view. To these players, thank you for your contribution as you always gave your all when required. This really reflected the spirit of the U/18 squad rather than two separate teams.

As I mentioned earlier, there was a period of five games where we lost by a margin of two goals or less. It was during this period that I was probably most proud of the team. At no stage did they drop their head, or lose heart. They continued to attend training and worked hard on the areas of their game that they needed to. The side was rewarded after the five losses when, in round 8 against Macquarie University, they comprehensively won by 91 points. It was just reward for the side that was also given top billing that night as the last match on the program for the club. It was a highlight for the side and a great opportunity and experience for the boys to play a night game.

The development and improvement I saw on the field was also matched with their efforts off the field. Their discipline to keep coaching staff informed as to their whereabouts and availability for both games and training was the envy of other clubs. As other clubs would inform me on a Saturday morning that they may have 18 to start, I always knew what side I would have and was able to focus on preparing the team for the game ahead. Whilst it may only seem a little thing, these little things went a long way to the smooth running of the side.

To our award winners for season 2009. We had joint Best and Fairest Winners this year, Jaren Serdar and Adam Hutt.

Jaren showed his competitive spirit from round one and never backed away from a contest. Jaren was the ‘go to’ guy in the middle and the one most likely to win the contested possession and bring his team mates into the game. He was rewarded during the year with a number of games in the Premier Cup team and has a very strong future.

Adam gave his all every week. He consistently ran himself into the ground and was prepared to work at both ends of the field. Adam was very aware of his abilities and was prepared to utilise his strengths and work hard at his weaknesses. There wasn’t a week that went by when he didn’t run himself into the ground as he got to contest after contest and this is a just reward for his consistency throughout the year.

The Coaches award goes to Paul Mildwater. Paul was new to the game this year and took on every challenge that was thrown his way. He was prepared to take advice on board and then apply himself at training and games. By the end of the year Paul was a key member of the side and was prepared to take on a wide variety of roles whether that be as a key member of the back line or through the midfield. Paul has a strong future in the game and we look forward to seeing him develop in the coming years.

To our captain, Mitch Dinan - from the preseason Mitch put his hand up as a leader of the U/18 squad and took on the responsibility of leading the relatively inexperienced Challenge Cup side.

There are a large number of people who I need to thank, as I wouldn’t have made it through the season without the help of these dedicated individuals. Firstly to my assistant coach, Jamie McNeill - whatever was needed to be done, you put your hand up. Whether that was organising drink bottles and medical kits on a Thursday, to running, or coaching the side when I was unavailable, I couldn’t have got through the season without your help. Thank you for your support, ideas and advice throughout the year.

To Peter Steer - your dedication to not only the U/18 program, but to the East Coast Eagles never ceases to amaze me. The sheer number of hours that you put in to your role can never be questioned. I really appreciated all the support and guidance that you provided to me over the duration of the season. It is people like you who truly make this club function.

To my match day manager - Sandra Hutt, thank you for your assistance. The less paper work I had to look after the better and you always managed to keep me on track. You took on the role enthusiastically and I really did appreciate your support. ______40______2009 YEAR BOOK

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. To our runners during the year - Alex Foxall, Lindsay Mayo, Jamie McNeill and the cameos from Peter Steer and Jonee Lee thanks for your help in the smooth running of the team. To Jo Graham and Kat Warr, our trainers, thanks for your efforts each week, we really appreciate your help in looking after any injuries that occurred during the year.

We had a great number of parents and siblings who supported the Challenge Cup team throughout the year and I truly thank you for your support. A side and club such as this doesn’t function without the help of volunteers and it was a very rare occasion that I may have had to chase someone to fill in a job on game day.

The first of these is George Acland, our club umpire. It is such a luxury having someone of George’s experience and skill to umpire our games. He always gave a clear and quick explanation of his decisions. I can’t thank him enough for his efforts during the year.

Particularly I would like to thank the following for their roles as goal umpires and time keepers, Carol Gray, Shane Dinan, Glen Moynihan, Max Bancroft, Grant Robinson and Gary Kitto. I am sure that I will have forgotten someone in this list and if I have, I do sincerely apologise but I do appreciate everyone’s help during the year.

Congratulations to Glen Garner and all those involved in bringing home the first Premier Division flag for the East Coast Eagles. To Jason Duss and the Reserve Grade side - although you didn’t manage to win the big one, to get there five times in a row is a massive achievement.

Whilst the Challenge Cup side was unable to make the finals this year what was shown by the whole squad, not only in improvement as players, but more importantly in their development as people, made this a hugely successful season. It has truly been a pleasure to be involved with this group of young men.

After a good 2008 season, we had a big turnover of players, with some 26 leaving the U/18 squad. This opened the door for some younger players to step up and meant we had to really focus on recruiting, and our Norwest Football Alliance clubs provided a wealth of talent to fill the hole. Numbers were very strong which meant we could once again field the two U/18 teams. The ability to field two teams has significantly added to the strength of the U/18’s and the club in general, and we are one of only two clubs in this very strong position.

Once again, the season started with the pre-season camp with the seniors and we had numerous players attend. They gained enormous benefit from the camp, and they built some excellent relationships with some senior players, who to their credit remained involved with the 18’s all year. This type of support is invaluable and certainly fast tracks a young player’s development.

The squad started to shape up and we looked to field a very strong Premier Cup team and expectations and our team goals were high, but realistic. A top 3 finish was what we were aiming for and we needed to win at least 14 games to achieve that goal. This was going to be no easy task, but the players really rallied together to become a particularly cohesive unit.

We had the privilege of being the first East Coast team to play on our magnificent new home ground at Bruce Purser Reserve and who better to front up to, but Pennant Hills. The team were really fired up and set the scene for our season ahead with a hard fought 37 point victory over our arch rivals. Our season was mapped into four discreet components, the home and away series being split into three groups of six games and then the finals series. After the first six games, we were sitting in 2nd spot on the ladder with a 5:1 win loss record and we were off to a fine start. Some of our new recruits were stamping their mark on the team and the competition, and certainly justified their move to East Coast.

______43______2009 YEAR BOOK

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. The next six games were a mirror image of the first six, with us winning five and losing one, while still holding onto 2nd spot on the ladder. Our form was excellent and we were playing a high standard of football and the belief in each other was on an all time high.

The last six games of the home and away season produced a significant win over our nemesis North Shore and a draw with the Dragons. We consolidated our 2nd position and achieved all of our goals to this point. The anticipation and expectations were understandably high for our finals campaign.

Our preparation and lead up to the finals was particularly good, but we did not manage to display the form that got us to this point and went down to St George in the Qualifying Final and bowed out of the finals race with a very disappointing loss to Wollongong in the Semi Final. This result was certainly not a part of the plan and before we knew it our season was over and there were a bunch of devastated players and officials. If nothing else, this should serve as a painful reminder that finals are not won easily and nothing but a 100% effort will get us across the line.

It was an absolute pleasure to coach such a talented and respectful bunch of players and once again we featured strongly in representative football. We had a total of 17 players play representative football this year. Congratulations to all the players who represented themselves, their parents and the club with distinction:

• Trent Monaghan – U/16 Pioneers & U/16 State Team Train on Squad • Damon Steer, Michael Clinch & Jack Hemmings – U/16 Pioneers • The following players were selected for the U/18 Pioneers: James Randall, Alex Foxall, Justin Steer, Tate Dimech, Tom McNamara, Dean Siljanoski, Josh Patira, Michael Johnston, Daniel Spiteri, Ben Bourke and Jack Dimery • Martin Karafilis – U/18 Northern Heat • Cory Dimech – U/15 Pioneers

It has been a huge team effort this year and I would like to thank the following people for their outstanding contribution, dedication and support of the U/18’s.

To Ryan Madden, our Challenge Cup Coach and Premier Cup Assistant Coach (Forward Coach), who did a great job with the Challenge team and provided excellent support for me and the Premier players. His footy knowledge and passion for the game are to be admired and without Ryan, there is no doubt the U/18’s would not have had such a good season.

To Peter Mack, who again took on the role as Team Manager and Midfield Coach and his contribution should not be underestimated. His professional approach to the role made him a stand out performer on match day and was easily the most organised and efficient Team Manager. This makes the job of coaching so much easier and we all appreciate your efforts Pete.

To Deidre Mack, our U/18 volunteer coordinator and registrar, who was at nearly every training session and worked tirelessly to ensure all the jobs for game day were allocated and people knew exactly what was required. The introduction of this new role was a huge success and that can be solely attributed to Deidre’s commitment and efforts. Thanks.

To Mark Pinchen, our Defence Coach, whose astute footy knowledge turned several games for us and none more important than his “let’s roll the dice” moves against North Shore and his now infamous “take off your jumpers” address against Riverview. His passion and commitment are second to none and very much appreciated. Thanks Mark.

To Jamie McNeil, Challenge Cup Assistant Coach and Match Day Assistant. Jamie came to the club this year and made an immediate impact. His input and support was outstanding and the players learnt a great deal from him this year. His “do whatever it takes” attitude saw him provide much needed assistance in numerous roles. Thanks Jamie.

To Lindsay Mayo, our reliable Runner for both the Challenge and Premier Cup teams. His tireless efforts each and every week and his support at training were very much appreciated by the coaches and players alike. Thanks Lindsay. ______44______2009 YEAR BOOK

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. To Glenn Johnston, our specialist Forward Coach, who imparted his knowledge and experience with passion and vigor. His unique approach was very well accepted by the players and made a huge difference to the team. Thanks mate.

To the Leadership Group, Justin Steer, Matthew Mack, James Dwyer, Sam Pinchen and Scott Pierce, a big thankyou for your commitment and leadership all season. You all made very significant progression in this area and were encouraged to work outside of your comfort zone and you took to this challenge with enthusiasm and it made a big and positive difference to the team. Thanks guys.

To Alan Moeller, our U/18 Coordinator for all your support, especially in helping us set up the support base we had this year.

To Glenn Garner, our Senior Coach, congratulations on the Seniors’ Premiership and you have set a level of professionalism within the club that is the benchmark for the competition and I have learned a great deal from you this season. Thanks for your support.

To Jason Duss and Scott Gatte, congratulations on an excellent year and thanks for the support your have provided us. The way you all welcomed the U/18’s into your team had a very positive impact on the players and made their transition to senior footy a rewarding experience. Thanks guys.

To Trev Hangan, I can’t thank you enough for all you help this year. Your behind the scenes work and support of the U/18’s was absolutely outstanding. Thanks Trev.

To Anthony Dignan, thanks for your support and we all wish you the best with your future outside of East Coast.

To Rowan Bilkey and Craig Abercrombie (and Digital Sports), a huge thankyou for assisting us in bringing the latest technology to the U/18’s and the excellent support from you both. The introduction of electronic statistics and individual player video highlights has again put the East Coast club at the forefront in Sydney footy and these innovations greatly assisted me as coach and the players. Thanks!

To the East Coast Eagles Board (Gus Seebeck, Craig Abercrombie, Phil Bester, Chris Ford, Mark Pinchen and Martin Tolar), your support of the U/18’s has been very welcomed and we have all worked together to ensure the 18’s are an integral part of the club. Thanks.

To our Junior Alliance Partners, in particular Geoff Newson (Baulkham Hills) and Graeme McCumiskey (Hawkesbury), thanks for your support throughout the season. It was a pleasure having your teams be a part of East Coast and thanks for providing us with players when we were short. I’m sure the relationship will continue to grow and will benefit both parties. Thanks guys.

A big thank you to the parents for your contributions each week and the support you have shown your sons and the coaches

A special thankyou to my wife De for supporting me throughout the season and enabling me to undertake my passion of coaching.

While the year did not finish the way we had hoped, we have again had a good season and raised the bar in regards to professionalism and performance and I’m very proud to have been a part of the team this year.

The year that had to be … in the first year where we put three senior teams on the paddock, we all knew there would be challenges … there had to be. But the step needed to be taken.

So started the challenge … bring together 15-20 players to fill the side when injuries prevented us filling the Thirds through the core senior group. Consisting of ex footballers, supporters, friends and family, the group had everything … experience, youth, talent, enthusiasm … but most of all heart.

The on-field success started early, winning two of our first three games … but it was also where it ended; as we went on to win one more game for the year in a season that, on paper, showed we were not competitive against the top four sides.

Despite the results, to the team’s credit we fought out every game … and after every game we left the field proud of our performance, regardless of the score. Because in every game we had our small victories, our stand out players, and the knowledge that we were never far off the pace … a win was always ‘just around the corner’.

But the Thirds are more than on-field results. In theory, the team was designed to give the ‘not selected’ players an opportunity to play in the Eagles’ colours, and the chance to be seen and considered for selection the following week based on on-field performances. In reality we had only a handful of games where anybody missed out on a spot and many more where the phones rang hot on a Thursday evening to get the two or three extras we needed to field 22.

Therein lies the true depth of the East Coast Eagles Football Club, as all hands reached out and volunteered for a game … from the Challenge Cup boys to Trevor Hangan and Ryan Madden. In the end no less than 65 players fronted for a game in the Thirds through 2009, with 15 playing their first game of competitive AFL.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. Even more remarkable was the fact that 45 players gained votes in the club Best and Fairest … proof that every player who wore the East Coast colours in Third grade this year gave 100%, earning respect from their peers and supporters.

A great effort from all and well done. A special thankyou to everyone who found the extra bodies and those who, against their better judgment, pulled on the boots and had a run.

Congratulations Chris Moore on winning the Best and Fairest. You consistently gave 100% whenever selected in the Thirds, regardless of the reason you were there. Your commitment to the club is a reward to all of us; some personal on-field recognition is just reward to you.

Matt Scholz, your constant drive to improve is second to none. Well done on a successful year, and congratulations on winning the Runner up Best and Fairest Award.

And Ben Hynes, Most Committed. From training to match day, your commitment on and off the field this year deserves to be recognised. You set the standard for the rest of the team, always giving 100% and never giving up.

I would personally like to thank everybody who supported the Thirds this year, from parents and friends to the Eagles’ Board, sponsors, members and supporters, who give such a huge part of their lives to the club.

Special mention has to go to Gary Bailey who volunteered to help out where he could as Team Manager, and ended up only missing just one game. I couldn’t have done it without you.

Nathan Halliday and the team at Sports Physio Norwest … your commitment to provide training staff at every game, without fail, was exceptional and highly appreciated by all.

Tammy Moeller, thank you for adding the Thirds to your list … I know you had a huge job coordinating all the club volunteers, but sorting out the Thirds’ roster was above and beyond!!

Glenn Garner and Jason Duss … thank you for the support and guidance you gave me this year in my first year of senior coaching … I learnt more than you realise and truly appreciate the experience.

And finally thank you to my family, who without question supported me, and the team, week in week out, through the highs and lows. I cherish your love and support.

It was another successful season for the East Coast Eagles Reserve Grade team. Many people will label it as disappointing; however, I believe that a team who has gained a place in its fifth successive Grand Final, deserves high recognition. It is not by chance that we achieved this. Instead, it was another reflection of the standards which our boys set for themselves, yet more importantly, their mates.

The competition was shuffled around a little this season, which saw our Reserve Grade team become part of the Division One competition. New teams such as Manly and UTS were promoted into this division to make it more competitive. These sides certainly deserved to be exposed to a better standard of football and proved to be a force within this competition. It is now us, as a club, who need to raise the bar to challenge these sides in a competition, which once belonged to us.

Promoting youth was again an aspect which saw the Ressies pass through an extensive list of both experienced and eager players, week in week out. This is not the most pleasant part of the job, but if we want to move forward and continue with our current success, we need to look to the future. It was great to see our third senior team take shape and compensate for the disappointed players who missed games on a weekly basis last season. There is no reason why we cannot aim to get all three senior teams playing finals in season 2010.

As we all know, football clubs don’t just take shape and run themselves. They rely on people. People who dedicate themselves for a common cause… Success! We are the benchmark of the competition from an administrative point of view. We have an enormous band of volunteers who just can’t say no. And we, as both coaches and players, are ever so grateful for this.

I would like to thank both Scott Gatte and Trevor Hangan for their assistance to me in season 2009. You guys help make a tough job easier. Your weekly input and presence around the playing group was

______54______2009 YEAR BOOK

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. greatly appreciated. Being a coach draws a lot of energy out of you and requires many sacrifices. Thank you.

To our tremendous Board of Directors. Most people probably don’t even know how much planning was done and how the foundation was laid for season 2009. With the loss of the General Manager throughout the season, we were left with multiple shoes to fill. Congratulations to those individuals who put their hands up and took on the spare roles. You made this season what it became.

To Glenn Garner and Michael Sankey. Congratulations on producing the club’s first senior Premiership. Two blokes who understand their footy extremely well. It was a pleasure to work with both of you. Let’s make sure it’s not the last one!

To Peter Steer and Ryan Madden. Well done on your achievements in 2009. Another fantastic season where you proved that our club has a bright future. It can be a difficult task to lead kids in the right direction, but both of you have certainly done just that. Thank you for your weekly input and assistance throughout the finals series.

To Anthony Dignan and family. I want to personally wish you and your family the best of luck in your future, wherever footy will take you. The roles and tasks which you fulfilled as our General Manager were astounding. It isn’t until you lose someone like ‘Digs’ that you find out just how much he did. Thanks again.

To the biggest supporters of all. Family, wives and girlfriends. Football takes up a lot of time. Thank you for your continual support of the playing group, through their numerous sacrifices. It is pleasing to know that we will always have your support, regardless of success. Thanks.

To our sponsors, members and supporters. Your contributions, both financial and morally have rubbed off on many of the players. I want to thank you for your extensive assistance with our club. East Coast Eagles wouldn’t be the same without your contributions. Thank you all.

To the medical staff. Thank you for your weekly injury updates and the treatment you provided to our players when needed. I would only think that other clubs are jealous of your professionalism and dedication which you put into our club. Thank you.

To Peter Bleus and our leadership group. Thank you again on the presence you had both on field and off field. Your assistance in guiding our youth and providing aspirations for others to follow are greatly appreciated. Thanks to all of you.

Lastly, to the playing group. Each and every one of you ought to be congratulated on your individual and collective achievements this season. Your numerous sacrifices and efforts to be the best you can are certainly valued. It may be disappointing to lose a Grand Final, but bottle up the hurt and unleash the fury next season. I am a firm believer that our Reserve Grade is still the best team in this competition. Season 2010 is our next opportunity. Let’s make it ours!

Thank you once again to all of the people who were involved in season 2009. Some teams hope to play finals each season. We have made it a habit. Whether it continues, is up to all of you. Best wishes to everyone.

I sit here and write this with a deep sense of pride and satisfaction. On reflection, I would have to say that the year certainly ran to script. Even the disappointment of losing the Grand Final in 2008 and some patchy form through the back half of this season, served as a valuable tool and learning experience for the group. I am extremely proud of our playing group’s ability to take last year’s Grand Final loss for exactly what it was - a poor performance on the day.

I was and still am of the opinion that we had put three of probably the most dominant finals displays seen for a long time together to reach last year’s GF and took tremendous confidence out of the fact that we had been almost a 10 goal better side than eight other teams in the competition. In the hours following the 2008 Grand Final and in the days following, the quest for redemption was well and truly forged. Right from the first session of pre-season training to the culmination of our dominant 2009 Premiership performance, the group’s attitude, mindset and determination remained steadfast that achieving anything less than a Premiership was unacceptable.

I would like to thank all players for their time, effort and commitment over the last 10 months; you have been outstanding as individuals and as a group to make the required sacrifices to achieve our ultimate goal. I would also like to thank all the wives, partners and parents for their understanding and support. I ______59______2009 YEAR BOOK

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. have no doubt that the extra training sessions and late nights have been an inconvenience at times and please accept this as an apology for this year, and in advance for season 2010!

I would like to thank the Board for helping to provide a winning environment for our players and giving me the opportunity to steer the club’s on field direction. In order to consistently perform at a high level and win Senior Premierships, there needs to be a balance between the on and off field resources, personnel and performance. East Coast Eagles have for a long time been perceived as probably the most professional club off the field and due to this we have had more than our fair share of detractors.

Those people who have neither the desire nor ability to reach those standards have been quick to take a pot shot that it was a wasted effort as we had not won a Senior Flag. As I pointed out in my post match speech on Grand Final Day, if you work long enough and hard enough you will eventually achieve success. It has been my aim as a coach to not only set and meet my own high standards, but to ensure that I meet and exceed the standard and expectations of the club, players and its loyal supporters.

This year’s Premiership was truly a reward for all and is the reason I thought it fitting to acknowledge some of the individual contributions made by support staff, volunteers, supporters and sponsors over the last two years and in years previous. I can honestly say that being able to share the presentation of the eight spare Premiership Medals with my players and feel the sense of achievement and satisfaction it brought to the entire room was a moment I will always remember. Lastly, but certainly not least I would like to thank my fellow coaches and all of you who have helped me personally in filling game and training related roles. You have all played an instrumental part in achieving our success and your assistance, advice and friendship is much appreciated and valued.

I would like to congratulate Dussy, Scott Gatte and the Division One players on their efforts to make another Grand Final. Although you had a disappointing day you should be extremely proud of the qualities you showed to get there, and I have no doubt that without the inclusion of two senior sides into the restructured competition, we would have added another flag to the collection. The bar has now been raised in this division and we once again need to rise to the challenge and perform accordingly to regain the title. This will take a greater level of commitment and fitness from our players wishing to play in Division One and will conversely lift the standard of our new Division Two team.

Although I am sure he knows this already and was disappointed in not getting another crack at winning the Premier Cup Flag, our U/18’s under the guidance of Peter Steer have improved immensely over the last two seasons. ‘Steery’ has introduced a system and game plan that will not only consistently provide future opportunities to win Premierships, but allow his players to make a smooth transition to senior football. I have enjoyed watching his players, tactics and game plan consistently evolve as he is truly assisting in the development of an Eagles’ Philosophy. Along with Sean Streat and Ryan Madden we have certainly got a great coaching team.

I am proud to have played a part in the Eagles first Senior Premiership and would like to once again thank and congratulate everyone involved with this great club. I would also like to take the opportunity to remind you all that the hard work to get to the top will be required over and over again to ensure we stay there. We now know the feeling of Premiership success at both senior levels and I have no doubt that we can continue to build our teams into the benchmark in all grades if the club, coaches and players continue to set high standards and work hard to achieve them.

There is only one thing more satisfying than winning a Premiership…..that is to defend it! OUR FLAG WILL HAVE TO BE TAKEN, AS IT WILL NOT BE SURRENDERED…...WE OWN IT……..See you at the Fortress in 2010.

PREPARATION – PROFESSIONALISM – PERFORMANCE

Yours in Football,

Glenn Garner

A major upgrade in our statistics has occurred throughout this season thanks to Scott Gatte and Peter Physick. Increased information can be seen above and also in the separate Match Statistics sections included in each team report in earlier pages.

Due to the complexity of this task, we invite any player who may feel their statistics to be wrong, to contact Scott Gatte on 0420 503635.

The table above includes only those who played for the Eagles in 2009 and who have played at least one (1) First Grade game.

For posterity, the 2010 Year Book will have a total list of players who have played AFL Sydney First Grade games whether currently playing or retired.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. PLAYER MILESTONES REACHED DURING 2009

The Match Statistics sections for each grade are included within the overall team reports elsewhere in the Year Book. Those statistics, whilst listed alphabetically, are now ranked according to total number of AFL Sydney First Grade games played for East Coast Eagles (ECE), including any AFL Sydney First Grade games played for Baulkham Hills Falcons (BHAFC) prior to and including 1999.

Following the statistics upgrade conducted this season, we now also record and recognise only those East Coast Eagles games played across all grades. Some players may appear twice in the milestones.

We have made the decision to cease including BHAFC matches played after season 2008. Eventually, as players who have progressed through from the BHAFC junior club take retirement, these statistics will become pure ECE games played.

However it is important to also maintain a register of the number of games played for the “Club”. The definition of the “Club” for this purpose is all matches played with ECE and BHAFC in any grade, or age group prior to and including 2008. These individual statistics are shown against each player’s name in the respective Match Statistics for each grade.

The manner in which milestones will be acknowledged in this and future Year Books is as follows:

• 50 / 100 / 150 / 200 etc senior First Grade games. (Includes any First Grade games at BHAFC.) • 50 / 100 / 150 / 200 etc total ECE games across all grades • 200 / 250 / 300 etc Club games across all ECE grades and any matches played at BHAFC prior to 2008.

Congratulations to the following players who reached personal milestones during season 2009.
