The Panthers trailed at each of the first two changes and led by five points at three-quarter time before kicking 10 goals in a spectacular final term to ensure that a double injury blow didn’t spoil a fairytale exit for the four-time premiership hero. The 29-year-old regular fullback, playing his 150th senior game for the club, kicked an unlikely five goals at full forward including the first and last goals of the match as Morningside beat the Eastern Conference battlers 22-15 (147) to 15-12 (102). Tuggeranong, at the tail of the NEAFL Eastern Conference has been an improved side since ex-Richmond ace Marc Dragicevic took charge recently, had the better of the early exchanges in especially heavy conditions following Brisbane’s recent big wet. They led 4- 4 to 3-5 after a first quarter highlighted by a stunning goal from ex-Redland player Matthew Ghirardello in which he turned his opponent inside out and split the big sticks from 40m. A double disaster hit Morningside 10 minutes into the second quarter when No.1 ruck man Peter Mollison and co-captain and leading goal-kicker Kent Abey went down within 60 seconds of each other. First Mollison, one of the big improvers in the competition this year, rolled his ankle when he landed awkwardly at a centre bounce. As the trainers were attending to him Abey, coming off 11 goals in his two previous games, took the next centre bounce and suffered a fractured cheekbone. He was taken to hospital and according to Rogers will miss the next six weeks. The Panthers, battling to regroup, trailed 6-10 to 9-6 at halftime and even local stalwarts were starting to wonder how they were going to kick a winning score without injured spearheads Abey and Shaun Mugavin. But in a fitting tribute to Price and an appropriate reward for the tireless efforts of Coach Rogers, they found heroes all over the ground as they kicked 6-4 to the visiting Hawks’ 3-3 in the third quarter to hit the front. Will Wolbers, a 203cm stripling in just his fourth senior game, stepped up to take charge in the ruck and more than erase the disappointment of being left out of the State U18 side for their last two games in Melbourne. “He (Wolbers) rucked the last two and a half quarters on his own and did a fantastic job for us,” said Rogers. “He took it as a real challenge and stepped up big time.” Up forward Price, centre half forward Jason Elliott and goal sneak Sam Faure combined for 16 goals. Given that they’d kicked 15 goals in a combined 27 games through the first 13 rounds it was an improbable return. Best afield Elliott worked tirelessly in a superb four-goal performance while the opportunistic Faure bagged a career-best seven goals to complement Price’s five as the Panthers registered 20 goals for the first time this season and bettered their previous highest score by 44 points. In the second half Morningside scored 101 points – the second-highest in the Northern Conference this season and 43 points more than their previous best second half in a Round 11 loss to Mt.Gravatt. The senior trio of Shelton, Upton and Adam Spackman were other standouts in a Morningside midfield which took charge in the second half, but Coach Rogers was just as pleased with the effort of 19-year-old Ben McNiece. “He’s been improving every week,” said Rogers. “He’d been playing mainly up forward but we put him into the midfield group this week and he had his best game for the club.” Blane Delbridge, too, played strongly, while Rogers was also full of praise for his defensive group. But Rogers revealed it wasn’t until late Thursday that Price, a wingman in the Siders’ 2003-04 grand final wins before playing at fullback in the 2009-10 flags, had accepted an invitation to play one last game and become the club’s third 150-gamer of the season behind Upton and Mugavin. It wasn’t a total stab in the selection dark. Although Price had kicked only two goals in 56 games since the start of 2009 as he patrolled the defensive goal square, he was at times a most effective forward in his earlier days and once kicked seven goals against the Suncoast Lions (Brisbane Lions Reserves) at the Gabba in 2007. “He (Price) is just a good footballer and he obviously learned a few tricks playing on some pretty good forwards over the years because he did a good job for us,” Rogers said. But it was a game plan which took a little while to kick into gear before setting up Morningside’s second NEAFL win of the season and giving the Panthers fresh hope of avoiding the wooden-spoon. “We took a while adjusting to the conditions and the foreign opposition and when a couple of guys (Mollison and Abey) went down we were under the pump,” said Rogers, whose side is now only one win behind eighth-placed Aspley and ninth-placed Mt.Gravatt. “It was great, then, for the guys to be able to come out and really dominant an opposition like we did in the second half. To finish the way we did in the last quarter was pretty special.” Hawks Memberships Now Available Tuggeranong Hawks Memberships are now available for season 2012; the club has a variety of membership packages available including: Full Adult Membership $40.00 (Admits to all home games) Full Family Membership $80.00 (2 Adults & 2 Juniors, admits to all home games) 3 Game Adult Membership $20.00 (Admits to 3 home games only) Junior Hawks Membership $20.00 (Juniors aged 17 and under) All financial members are eligible to win $500 cash by being in attendance at one of the 3 CASH BONUS home games in 2012 (This will be the round 13, 16 & 21 games of the NEAFL season) Not won in round 13 so Jackpot now $1000.00 Membership forms are available for download on the clubs website or email [email protected] Support those who support us!
