www.sydneyafl.com.au www.sydneyafl.com.au AFL FROM THE EDITOR Not only is the Premier Division tight but the story P W L D % Pts is the same across the eight divisions in the AFL Geelong 8 8 0 0 138.3 32 Sydney competition. Collingwood 8 7 1 0 164.1 28 Hawthorn 8 6 2 0 129.8 24 Essendon 9 5 3 1 133.2 22 It is pleasing to see that the competition across all grades has not only produced close results, but also competition for all Carlton 8 5 2 1 120.6 22 spots on the ladder. This is arguably the most competitive season in AFL Sydney history, and this is a credit to the clubs and also the Divisionalisation structure employed by the League. West Coast 8 5 3 0 131.0 20 Fremantle 8 5 3 0 103.0 20 Premier Division sees East Coast, Sydney University and Balmain all equal on top in terms of ‗Match Ratio,‘ with a logjam behind them including North Shore, UNSW, Pennant Hills ,St George and Illawarra also sitting equal, two games behind. Sydney 8 4 3 1 99.9 18 The same is true in Division One with Manly Warringah and Macquarie University impressive to date, with three sides close Richmond 9 4 4 1 91.3 18 behind. Melbourne 8 3 4 1 105.0 14 Seven out of the ten teams in Division Two have won at least half of their games, while the same can be said for half of the Western Bulldogs 8 3 5 0 92.6 12 sides in Division Three. One of those sides is Saints afc, who have been more than competitive after jumping up a grade at Adelaide 8 3 5 0 86.3 12 the last second. They lost narrowly to the top side in UNSW on the weekend– their second loss of the season. St Kilda 8 2 5 1 90.0 10 Probably most indicative of the fight for places is the Under 18 Premier Cup competition. All ten sides have won at least one North Melbourne 8 2 6 0 87.0 8 game, with East Coast the only undefeated side after seven rounds. A number of players here are already impressing at a Gold Coast 7 2 5 0 53.3 8 senior level, with some have already tasted Premier Division action, and Rising Star nominations. Brisbane 8 1 7 0 80.0 4 The ninth round of Premier Division features more enticing match-ups. Campbelltown host a Balmain outfit coming off the Port Adelaide 9 1 8 0 67.2 4 bye but still with some injury and availability clouds lingering over their side. The Blues were competitive against Illawarra at home last start so both sides will need to be on their game to get the desired result. At Picken Oval, Western Suburbs face another tough assignment against Sydney University. The Magpies failed to kick an opening half goal against East Coast, highlighting their struggles this year. In contrast, the University side have been strong in attack, averaging 160 points in their Geelong 15.12-102 def. Carlton 14.16-100 last three matches. St Kilda 16.10-106 def. Melbourne 13.8-86 Fremantle 21.16-142 def Port Adelaide 14.6-90 East Coast, as noted before, sit atop the ladder and are strongly favoured to defeat the winless UTS who were competitive Brisbane 10.13-73 def North Melbourne 8.11-59 against North Shore at stages last week. The closest match of the weekend fixture could well be at Mike Kenny Oval with Richmond 16.9-105 def Essendon 13.11-89 Pennant Hills playing host to Illawarra. Both sides won last weekend courtesy of a strong start– something that will be im- Collingwood 20.15-135 def Adelaide 14.8-92 portant again on Saturday afternoon. Finally, the Foxtel Match of the Round is at Blacktown, with St George looking to regain momentum after two heavy losses in the last fortnight against UNSW. North Shore, currently in fourth, have the bye. Hawthorn 15.16-106 def Sydney 8.12-60 West Coast 26.19-175 def Western Bulldogs 8.4-52 Last weekend also saw smiles at the Manly, with the senior club playing their first matches at their Weldon Oval home for Gold Coast Bye two seasons. After a long wait, the Wolves celebrated with a win the Seniors (Division One) after narrowly losing their Divi- sion Two and Under 18 Challenge Cup curtain-raiser matches. ROUND 10 ROUND 11 Finally, the milestones continue in the umpiring ranks, with Peter Nilson set to wave his flags for the 500th time this week- Friday Friday Melbourne v Carlton @ MCG Essendon v Melbourne @ MCG end.
