EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. WHAT IS THE YEAR BOOK ALL ABOUT?

The history of any sporting club is vitally important as the years roll by. In the case of the East Coast Eagles AFL Football Club Inc, we have some significant history emanating from the Falcons at Baulkham Hills.

Since 1976 when the Club was first founded, many people have put time and effort into ensuring that nothing is missed in a particular season in relation to results, winners of awards and general recollections of each season.

We at the Eagles intend to maintain that unbroken record of publishing full financial details of the organisation and writing about the highs and the lows of life around our Football Club. For those who have maintained copies of previous Annual Reports, there is great pleasure to be had in reviewing past editions and reading about the kids who have progressed right through the various age groups and on to success at a senior level in the Sydney AFL and beyond.

They can also settle arguments as to who did what and when and in time will be invaluable aids to future generations of East Coast administrators, players and supporters. We are always on the look out for different aspects to our history and how and what should be recorded.

The editors will always accept suggestions from members and players as to how we can do it better for those who will read this document in 10, 20, 30 years time. Its importance to the history of the Club cannot be underestimated.

Please enjoy this year’s edition and we hope that it provides hours of enjoyment for those who support our Club.

Don’t forget as well that our excellent website at www.eastcoasteagles.com.au is fully maintained by Digital Sports Productions and is interactive with it’s own professional Guestbook / Message Board where Members can exchange views on all sorts of topics to do with AFL footy and in particular our Club and the Sydney AFL. Match reports from all Grades are posted weekly along with great news items. The Photo Gallery is updated weekly by Peter Physick with his excellent action shots and player portraits.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. PRESIDENT’S REPORT

PETER PHYSICK

Perhaps we should put a poll question on our website as to what is the most important outcome of running a Footy Club. Is it ….

1. Winning a First Grade senior Premiership? 2. Running a profitable Club? 3. Grooming elite junior footballers? 4. Developing young men into responsible mature adults? 5. Just having fun?

Indeed we should ask if there are other valid reasons why so many people put so much time into ensuring the Club exists from year to year. I think we do 2,3,4, & 5 pretty well but of course we haven’t achieved #1. Not through want of trying of course but as many writers inside this 2004 Year Book will attest, their view is that it may not be too far away.

To do it we need a fixed income stream, a dedicated team of players, coaches, managers, supporters and administrators melding into a dedicated Club. Taking these one by one, let’s look at what we already have as assets.

Income by way of sponsorship has dramatically increased following the arrival into the Club of Steve Gawley. His networking capacity and initiative is huge. Only surpassed by his love of the Eagle brand. Be it East Coast or West Coast. I cannot provide a higher accolade for Steve than presenting him with the coveted President’s Award for 2004. (See page 22) Additionally, revenue was on the up through sponsors’ luncheons, but we missed out somewhat in the social area when we did not adequately cover for the absence of last year’s committee who were a powerful driving force for social events. Equally however, I am very pleased to note the extremely strong bond between the players who mustered 27 attendees for the players’ trip away to Cairns in mid October.

The list of playing personnel is good. Very good. One probably should express disappointment that we didn’t finish higher on the ladder than 5th but one should also acknowledge that 9½ wins is a substantial improvement on 2003. Recruiting continues unabated with targeted positional players being a priority.

We have been fortunate to have had the services of Michael Knuppel as Senior coach for the last two years with a contracted third term in 2005 unable to be completed by mutual agreement between the two parties. In his First Grade report (page 38) Michael explains the reasons why he felt he needed to step aside and devote far more of his time domestically than he previously could. Consequently the Club is undertaking a search for a replacement who can continue to harness the excellent culture that Michael has brought to the Eagles. On your behalf may I say thank you to Michael and offer he and Libby our very best wishes for the future. No doubt Jasi and Thomas will see plenty of East Coast games in 2005.

Scott Abercrombie holds the Club record for number of games played at 362. Scott has announced his retirement in order to continue his coaching aspirations. As our Reserve Grade coach for the last three years, I don’t believe there would be anyone else in Sydney football that would have as good a knowledge of opposition players and teams as Scott. His input will be invaluable to the incoming Senior Coach. Trevor Hangan too is undecided as to what his future will be after coaching our 18’s for the last two years. There is plenty of off field options for us in 2005.

Our Team Managers as usual were outstanding. Ross Abercrombie did everything he had to do including a stint of goal umpiring at Wagener Oval one week. Alan Brotherston backed up for both 18’s and First Grade and his contribution to our cause is extensively covered on page 23.

______8 ______2004 YEAR BOOK & Annual Report

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. An East Coast supporter is a fabulous person. We have a very strong team who provide considerable noise and advice to our players, not to mention the umpires. Opposition clubs enjoy hosting East Coast at away (for us) games because they know there will be a large contingent of people who will turn up clad in Eagle merchandise.

Administratively the Club has been well served, except for the lack of Social occasions. Our Executive committee has toiled manfully to cover everything it has needed to. Apart from Graeme Merkel, who is spared the task of having separate day to day business interests, Bob Wynne, Steve Gawley, Chris Bilkey and I all have extensive personal business responsibilities to undertake through the week. Unfortunately these impact on the time available for volunteer footy work. As a consequence we have decided to appoint a fulltime General Manager who will be funded from our own resources this time. Not the NSWAFL whose General Manager grant was withdrawn more than 18 months ago. I am delighted to welcome Dave Ralston to East Coast as our GM effective early November. Dave hails from Wangaratta in the Victorian Ovens & Murray competition and has extensive experience in AFL football clubs in Victoria and Queensland.

Mix all this together and we have the ingredients to bake ourselves a pretty successful cake. One which rises in the middle and grows to its full potential when heat is applied. And which won’t crumble when people try to cut it open. This cake has the ability to win First prize at the Show.

One impact on our desire to win Premierships and develop footballers is the interaction between ourselves and the junior footy clubs in our area. We haven’t paid due attention to this issue in 2004, however the appointment of Dave Ralston will more than cover this aspect as it will be a key plank in his job description.

Our most immediate task is the appointment of our Senior coach. Interestingly enough six of the eight clubs who competed in 2004 are looking for new coaches. The market for such people is not huge in Sydney and we will therefore not be rushed into an uninformed decision.

The long standing negotiations with the Baulkham Hills Council continue as we maintain “project Withers Rd” to secure our own ground. We have cleared several further hurdles during the year just passed and as Chris Bilkey says in his report on page 19, the site certainly meets all our long term needs.

The opportunity of hosting the Sydney AFL Finals’ canteens arose again this year on its rotational basis between clubs and naturally we grabbed the chance to earn additional revenue. The beaut thing about making decisions like this is that we always know there will be a myriad of people who will offer their assistance and again we were not let down. A big thank you to all who made their time available to buy, sell, cook or build as the case may have been.

Financially I’m pleased to say that again we have finished on the positive side of the ledger and my thanks go to Bob Wynne who not only capably managed our finances but acted as our General Manager for much of the season. Thanks to Graeme Merkel who tirelessly works on Football Operations matters and absolutely deserved his seven week holiday overseas after Grand Final day. My thanks too go to Chris Bilkey who as Vice President ran the Club in my absence overseas in April & May.

The future looks rosy and the incoming coach has much to look forward to...…

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. GENERAL MANAGER

BOB WYNNE

Unfortunately, our 2003 General Manager, John Evernden, was unable to continue in the role due to personal commitments and the need to spend some time with the “London Eagles”. John’s presence was sorely missed throughout the season.

The Club is greatly indebted to Stephen Nash, Melbourne Manager for West Coast Eagles, for his ongoing support and advice. Stephen is a key reason for the success of our relationship with West Coast and we thank him for his efforts during 2004 and wish him every success in his new employment.

We have moved closer to playing finals football at Senior level, but just fell short. The latter part of the season showed some strong results as the playing group got to know each other’s games. If we can keep this squad together, we will certainly be a force in season 2005. The Reserves and Under 18’s reached the finals for the fourth time in five years. The Club remains committed to developing young players and giving them First Grade experience.

Special thanks to our football operations manager, Graeme Merkel, who works tirelessly at all aspects of our Club’s performance.

The coaching and support staff sustained the building program commenced in 2003. Due to family and employment commitments, Michael Knuppel will not be able to continue as senior coach for season 2005. We thank Michael for his efforts in developing the football club over the past two years, especially in changing the culture of the club to expect to play finals football and win. The coaching and management staff of Nick Trask (Assistant Coach), Phil Bester, Mark Horan, Scott and Ross Abercrombie, Andrew Moylan, Trevor Hangan, Alan Brotherston and Bruce Stokes gave their all to get our Club into a winning position and their efforts are greatly appreciated.

We are very fortunate to have an excellent medical crew supporting our players. Matt Stewart, Rudi Bylsma and Blake Ure ensure our players are attended to in a very professional manner.

Game day requires a lot of people to perform a wide range of duties, including:

Timekeepers: Graham Logan, Paul Madden, Chris Bilkey, Geoff Cottee, Frank Ure Scoreboard: Richard Lee, John Clark, Jared and Liam Patira Gate attendants: Thanks to Gary Delaney from the Falcons for bringing his sons over. Raffles: The Angels Cheer squad: The Angels Canteens at Bankstown: Cathy Wynne, Paul and Karen Madden, Leonie Ure, Sharon Patira, the Under 18’s parents and Reserve grade players.

Thanks to the staff of the Corus Hotel Sydney, who ensure our functions that are held there are great successes, and to the Committee and members of North Ryde Golf Club, who provide a wonderful environment for our post match functions.

Thanks to Simon Laughton and Anthony Dignan from the AFL NSW/ACT Commission for their ongoing support and assistance in running the SFL competition.

STEPHEN NASH / VICTORIAN MANAGER / WEST COAST EAGLES

So close and yet so far is probably the simplest and easiest way to sum up the 2004 season for the East Coast Eagles Football Club.

From my observations, the 2004 season showed that the Club is able to match it with the best in the competition. However, through the disappointment of just missing out on the Finals, there should be plenty of hunger and optimism within the player group to build on for 2005 and to move forward next year.

During my time with the Club I have continually mentioned the importance of building and setting the foundations off-field which will in time ensure the strength and viability of the East Coast Eagles.

This isn’t easy especially in a “non AFL friendly” market like Sydney.

However, the work that the Peter Physick led Board and in particular the behind the scenes work of the ever enthusiastic Steve Gawley has to be admired and applauded.

The results of this will be announced at Club Champion Night.

It was with sadness that I recently received a phone call from Michael Knuppel announcing his decision to resign. During Michael’s short time at the Club he has made a significant impact in reinforcing the disciplines needed for success. I truly believe that Michael’s legacy is engraved into the fabric of the club for many years to come.

On behalf of the West Coast Eagles I thank Michael for his input which will not be forgotten and in time will bear fruit.

While on resignations, for those who are unaware, I recently tendered mine to the West Coast Eagles. And my legacy to the East Coast Eagles will be to ensure that the relationship between our two great Clubs continues.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my involvement over the years and I will continue to watch with interest the progress of the mighty East Coast Eagles Football Club.

JUNIOR CLUB LIAISON

BOB WYNNE

Our ability to further develop our junior club program during 2004 was hampered by a lack of resources. We did, however, achieve a number of key outcomes.

Despite the West Coast Eagles game against Sydney being scheduled for Canberra, we were able to arrange a visit by David Hart to a number of schools and junior clubs. David’s visit coincided with the finals of the Paul Kelly Cup. The local St Michaels primary school was playing in the Finals, but their coach was interstate for the week. David was able to give the boys a coaching session prior to the Finals, which was greatly appreciated by the school and the players – And they went on to win the Kelly cup!!

Another key development from David’s visit arose following a coaching session at the school, when Arndell College resolved to adopt AFL as a school sport. Senior East Coast players have supported the coaching days to ensure the program is a success and Steve Gawley has managed the process to ensure the school continues the program.

Senior players, Nick Trask and Kingsley Hutcherson assisted the Under 16 Falcons coaching staff with preparation for the Finals. Although the Senior assistant coach is not sure about taking on 16 year olds again, the visit paid off as the Falcons were the Under 16 Premiers!!

Once again, the Kellyville / Rouse Hill Magpies presented two ‘East Coast Eagles’ trophies on presentation day. We are working closely with their committee to ensure the code gets a second ground in the Hills area.

LIFE MEMBERS - 2004

1. Life Membership may be conferred upon any Member who has 10 years active involvement with either Baulkham Hills Australian Football Club Inc (BHAFC) or East Coast Eagles AFL Football Club Inc. (ECE) and has rendered outstanding service, or has displayed exceptional, unusual, or distinguished merit to the Club. 2. Past service with the BHAFC up to and including the year 2001 will be deemed as service to ECE for the purposes of ECE Life Membership eligibility.

RUDI BYLSMA

It was about 10 years ago that two young men decided to leave the Parramatta Goannas to join the Baulkham Hills Falcons Football Club. Not only did we gain two talented players but we gained a Dad who was very keen to do what he could to assist the teams his children were playing for. Rudi has always been actively involved in the on field training regime giving freely of his time whenever required and often outside of match day. But you could always count on him being there to tend to the needs of his beloved footballers. He straps them, he rubs them, he stretches them, he runs them water and above all, he cares for them.

Rudi is one of those guys who is in it for the long haul, even though neither son is involved with the Club at the moment. But both will be back one day and the three Bylsmas will be cheerfully re-united as a football family.

Thanks Rudi for your contribution to the Eagles and the Falcons and congratulations on becoming the 29th Life member of our Football Club.

RICHARD LEE

It was about 1992 or so that Richard first showed up at the Falcons with two kids in tow who wanted to continue playing Aussie Rules, having grown up in South Australia with the sport. Keen to be involved in everything he could, Richard has always offered to help where he can. He has been a Team Manager, he has been the Club Secretary and he has been the Vice President. Now actively involved in the vital area of Fundraising, we saw the record breaking 2003 Auction night steam roll all previous records for funds raised. Again in 2004 when we needed the same role to be filled, Richard kindly put up his hand and volunteered to coordinate and produce the Auction night once again.

Like Rudi, Richard doesn’t have those two kids playing anymore but each and every home game he can be found tallying the scoreboard whilst at the same time indulging in his other passion where he holds a PHD in Umpire Advising.

Thanks for continuing on with the Eagles Richard and being inducted as our 30th Life Member of the Club.

BOB WYNNE

Like Rudi and Richard, Bob has also had two sons playing for the Club. Becoming involved with AFL footy was a new experience for him back in the early nineties having grown up with Rugby League. But he quickly grew to love and understand the sport and wanted to put back something into the administration side. Throughout these subsequent years Bob has demonstrated considerable skills in the area of providing financial input to our Club. After all he is an Accountant and for many years now has taken on the role of custodian of our funds.

In recent times Bob has been an Executive Board Member providing valuable and constructive business advice particularly in the early formative years of the Eagles.

The Club is certainly fortunate to have volunteers such as Robert Wynne and we congratulate him on becoming our 31st East Coast Eagles Life Member.

PLAYER LIFE MEMBERS - 2004

1. ECE Player Life Membership will be awarded to any player who provides 10 years of playing service, not necessarily consecutive, from and including games played (minimum of one) in any grade from and including the year 2000 onwards. 2. Past service (in playing years) with the BHAFC can be included in determining eligibility.

Comments in italics are taken from the Annual Report for the player’s first year of football at the Club.

TRENT GOODREM ….. Trent was a first year player who improved out of sight in all areas, so much so that he was a deserving winner of the Most Improved Award. His ability to read the play and a strength, which belied his stature, held him in good stead. In the last game of the year Trent was thrown in the deep end at centre half back, against a much taller opponent and had a blinder cutting off that avenue of attack for French’s Forest. Congratulations on a great year Trent. Keep working and you too should have a bright future. U/9 Hawks 1994

Whilst Trent is a true Eagle, we only had him for 9 games this year, as and when RAMS commitments allowed. The growth in his talent and abilities has been outstanding since his debut 10 years ago. A dual Baulkham Hills Falcons’ Junior Footballer of the Year, it was only a matter of time before Trent played at Senior level. The fact that he was able to do with flair and maturity surprised no one and he is to be congratulated on winning the West Coast Eagles sponsored Rising Star Award for season 2004.

ALEX WYNNE ….. Unlike most players, Alex likes playing in the backline. Similar to his brother he is always willing to learn. With another two years in U/9’s, he should be a real possession winner in the coming seasons. Keep up the positive attitude Alex. U/9 Kookas 1995

Even in 2004 Alex is still an extremely capable backline player. His 18’s coach Trevor Hangan encouraged him to play prior to the finals to enable him to qualify and strengthen the team. Unfortunately due to other commitments with junior finals and studying for school exams he was unable to play. Alex will be a pivotal player in future Eagles’ teams. Our congratulations go to Alex for Captaining the Premiership winning U/16 Falcons.

……… didn’t Ben Macnamara have a wonderful season? Just how many possessions did he get across the 18 games? ……… why do the West Coast Eagles continue to be involved with us? Perhaps it’s because we seek the same outcomes in footy and share a similar desire to see the code grow in Sydney. ……… how do the members of the Executive find then time required to do all the things they do? ……… why can’t we have more home games than every one else, seeing as how we have more potential home match day sponsors than we have games? ……… what a great initiative it was that saw East Coast put their logo on the First Grade footies and then presented the signed match ball to the match sponsor? ……… was it just me, or did the umpiring improve markedly through out this season? Or were we just nicer to the men in white …. sorry, orange. ……… why don’t the NSWAFL increase their budget to Digital Sports to allow more than a one camera shoot for the Fox Footy Match of the Day? ……… just how big a thrill did Matty Stewart get out of seeing the Pennant Hills Physio wearing Benny Rogers’ footy gear? ……… is there no limit to the support that the Angels give to our boys? ….….. there are people in Sydney footy circles who call East Coast under achievers? ……… how good was it that Pilko finally finished up in front for once in Eagles Extravaganza? He outlaid $5,950 for a total return of $10,677.50. ……… will the Billy McLeod Medallist Liam Madden become a London Eagle with his brother Ryan in 2005? Who else is going to make the pilgrimage to the UK? ……… who was it that hurled the Cairns’ rubbish bin and gave Billy’s boy Luke 13 stitches in his head? ……… how did the World’s Greatest Runner, West Coast’s David Hart, get the nickname of “Dhuf” and why is it that he has an infatuation with Karaoke buses? ……… how good a ground is for playing and watching footy at? Best in Sydney? ……… after more than seven years of negotiation with Baulkham Hills Council, it looks like we are just one voting session away from having our own home ground at long last. ……… whatever happened to the old concept of individual player sponsorship? Time to get that back. ……… we are determined to position our September sponsors’ luncheon as the Premier Sydney AFL Grand Final function to be seen at in Grand Final week. ……… geez, we have some generous and loyal sponsors who need to be rewarded real soon. ……… early reports from our recruiting people suggest that there will be some quality new recruits in 2005 to supplement the excellent list we already have. ……… the united help we had from Club supporters for the three weeks of the Finals’ canteens was outstanding. Significant thanks to all concerned. ……… will the League introduce a 2nd Division for Under 18’s football next year? ……… how lucky are we to have the “Pilko and Gawley” show on our side? ……… thank goodness Ash Loxton recovered. And so quickly!! ……… who will be the first to beat Scott Abercrombie’s Club record of 362 games? Will anyone reach 500? ……… how many people will take advantage of the Castle Hill RSL’s fabulous C2K gym offer? ……… will Simon Marshall stay away from balconies and be back on the track next year? ……… did you know that if East Coast had kicked just two more goals then they would have had the second highest “points for” aggregate in the First Grade competition? ……… everyone is looking forward to Dave Ralston’s arrival at the Club in November 2004 as our new General Manager. Dave has extensive experience with football club management and we look forward to his input. ……… how good is it to have three corporate naming rights sponsors lined up for the next three years? ……… when the new East Coast jumpers arrive for next season, the Club will go up another notch with its presentation on and off the field. ……… should we consider fielding a team in London?

Notes:

The Club was aiming to have all debt repaid by 31 December 2004. This goal will not be totally achieved, however we have continued to reduce our debt to AFLNSW and will continue to work at reducing all debt.

The Club committed to improving playing strength to overcome our low position on the First Grade ladder for the past two seasons. To enable this, Steve Gawley actively sought out additional sponsors to supplement existing support. Steve achieved excellent results in his endeavours, producing an additional $30,000 for the club with the match day sponsors being a great hit. Great work Steve!

Unfortunately our major auction night did not achieve anywhere near the wonderful result from 2003. Due to the loss of the majority our social committee to London, we were also well down on social functions and the revenues they produce. To offset these losses, the Club was allocated the canteen rights for the SFL finals series which produced a positive return of $10,000.

Special thanks to the small band of dedicated workers who worked tirelessly over the four days of the Finals. Also, thanks to those players who pitched in and helped.

The amount shown for “Association fees” includes insurance costs and the reduction represents a saving from the AFL’s efforts in securing reduced premiums.

“General Manager costs” were not incurred during 2004 as the NSW AFL did not continue with the grant as in prior years.

FACILITIES DEVELOPMENT

CHRIS BILKEY

One of the critical success factors for East Coast Eagles’ continued growth is clearly the establishment of the team at a ground that we can truly call our home. Roger Sheeran Oval, while excellent in some respects, is simply not available to us as often as we would like, either for fixtures or for training purposes. Furthermore, our ability to attract and retain a sponsorship base is hampered by our almost nomadic existence.

For these reasons, the Executive Committee has been actively exploring a range of options to provide a long term nest for the Eagles. The options evaluated have included:

• Long term tenancy at Roger Sheeran Oval. Unfortunately the cost of such an option is very high, and does not provide access to the ground for the required training periods. • Relocation to other sites outside the Baulkham Hills Shire. The uncertainty that surrounds the development of such sites makes these options untenable. • Relocation to a site within the Baulkham Hills Shire.

While the last option has been an ongoing objective of the club for many years, little has eventuated until recently. Now the Council has approved the development of a site in Withers Road, Rouse Hill, for use as an Australian Rules ground / cricket ground. With the active support of the NSWAFL and Cricket NSW, the club submitted a proposal to become a permanent co-tenant of the ground, along with the junior club, the Kellyville Magpies, and a cricket club.

We believe that this site will meet most of the club’s requirements going forward. In particular, the plan includes a fenced oval of adequate size, with lighting, a grandstand with amenities block and changerooms, and off-street parking.

The site is readily accessible for players and fans, most of whom live in the Shire. Furthermore, the M2 makes it a relatively quick trip from areas closer to the city. It certainly meets the club’s need for a ground anchored in a growth area that will provide a ready source of new talent.

While there is still much yet to discuss and resolve with Council, the Committee believes that the option provides the best solution for the Eagles in the future. We look forward to working with the Council to provide a valuable resource for the area, and to consolidating our own future as Premiership contenders for many years to come.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. OUR MOST VALUED SPONSORS

STEVE GAWLEY

Following several meetings in late 2003 and early 2004, the concept of East Coast Eagles Enterprises was progressed under the banner of “Sponsorship, Fundraising & Community Support Committee” with Steve Gawley as Chairman and a committee comprising Richard Lee, Frank Ure, Arthur Sanderson, Chris Bilkey, Peter Marshall and Peter Physick. The prime objective of this committee was to seek sponsorship from existing and new sponsors to meet the ever increasing financial needs of the East Coast Eagles Football Club.

In 2004, the support of our sponsors was fantastic with three key areas of sponsorship achieved:

1. Major Sponsor Draw.

The 2004 Major Sponsor Draw was well supported, although slightly down on previous years in revenue received. The participants included many existing sponsors and supporters, however many new personal and company sponsors entered the draw. The winner of the 2004 Major Sponsor Draw was Bradnam Windows and Doors who have been a major supporter of the Club over many years. The runners-up were Coulton Isaac Barber and Saska. Congratulations again go to Bradnam’s and all the other entrants who contributed significantly to the 2004 draw.

2. Match Day Sponsors.

A new and innovative idea from the Enterprises Meetings for 2004 was to introduce the concept of Match Day Sponsorship. The Match Day Sponsor was allowed signage, entry and public acknowledgement on each home match day and the concept was extremely well accepted and quickly absorbed into the East Coast Eagles home game culture. The support from both new and existing sponsors was overwhelming with all home games “snapped up” within days of the advertising appearing on the club’s website.

In 2004, the East Coast Eagles Match Day Sponsors were:

Round Sponsor 2 Base Course Management 4 Signwave Blacktown 6 Wirtgen Australia 8 Thomas McKnight Consulting 10 ProGroup Management 12 Sapphire Mortgage Services 14 All State Roads 16 Custom Fleet 18 Coulton Isaac Barber

Match Day Sponsorship for 2005 will continue and is already fully subscribed with the majority of 2004 sponsors accepting our invitation to again be an East Coast Eagles “Match Day Sponsor”. East Coast sincerely thanks all 2004 Match Day Sponsors, their employees and Club helpers for making this new idea an extremely successful initiative.

______20 ______2004 YEAR BOOK & Annual Report

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc.

3. Club Sponsors.

The support for East Coast Eagles continued from many and varied sources in 2004 and our loyal and long serving sponsors again stepped forward to ensure the Club met its financial requirements. Mike Pilkington of Taxi Clothing again stepped forward and “Pilko” continued to support and sponsor the club, Craig Barber of Corus Hotel Sydney again supplied accommodation packages to East Coast supporters and provided world class facilities at his hotel for several functions throughout 2004, Keith Cormican of Custom Fleet who supplied the Club vehicles and vocal support, the Frost Family from the Lamson Paragon Group of Companies again supported the Eagles in 2004, Scott and Craig Abercrombie from Digital Sports whose support at Eagles games never falters, Leonie and Frank Ure of Kenthurst Printing Machine Sales cheering again in 2004, Chris Bilkey at Banjo Books, Ian and Joan Francis at Signwave Blacktown, Base Course Management Pty Ltd and many others.

One of the most encouraging and positive aspects of sponsorship in 2004 was the introduction, acceptance and confirmation of long term support from newly introduced sponsors from a wide field of businesses. Peter and Helen Brady along with Jon Gawley of Sapphire Mortgage Services commenced their support of East Coast Eagles in 2004, John Geary and Staff at Wirtgen Australia, Ken McCracken and Don Stein as Directors of ProGroup Management Pty Ltd joined the Eagles sponsorship team in 2004, Jan Barber of Coulton Isaac Barber who were runners up in the Major Sponsor Draw, Barry Wellard of Loscam and Paul Coughlan of All State Roads who, after completing his duties as Assistant Coach for Campbelltown Football Club, then joined the Eagles post-game to present the Match Day Sponsors Award!

There are many sponsors and supporters who donate both time and money to the Club who we may have missed in our summary above. To them, thank you so much. Also, a very big thankyou to the East Coast “Angels”, in particular, Frankie and Janie who, without asking or prompting, ensured our Match Day Sponsors and their guests enjoyed a relaxed and friendly atmosphere at each home game. Well done ladies!

Overall, 2004 was an extremely successful year for East Coast Eagles in maintaining, securing and consolidating the financial future for the Club over the next year and hopefully, thereafter. The securing of sponsors is an ongoing task with new and innovative ideas continually being appraised and acted upon by the Club. In 2005, the East Coast Eagles have exciting news regarding Major Sponsors and stay tuned to find out the great news!

Finally, as I have mentioned previously, the hard working committee, on behalf of the club, wishes to whole heartedly thank all those sponsors, supporters, helpers, assistants and people who have helped the club in 2004.

Roll on 2005!!!!!

FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE

RICHARD LEE

Once again a very successful Auction Night was conducted at the Corus Hotel Sydney. The night raised $15,000.00 that goes towards the running of the Club. The night was well attended with about 120 people turning up to bid on some fantastic Auction items. Once again, Graham Logan and Gus Seebeck performed magnificently not only in their roles as Auctioneers, but in providing the entertainment as well.

Id like to thank Base Course Management, IMG, The East Coast Players, Nathan Symes of QM Technologies, NEC, the Goodrem Family, B.Physick’ly Active, the Novotel / Accor Group, Laima Physick, Yokohama, and The Corus Hotel for their most generous donations to the main auction.

Id also like to thank Jason Crawford, Sharon Green, Mick Knuppel, Custom Fleet, Phil Bester, Darren Chapman, Banjo Books, Trevor Hangan, Al Brotherston, Ross Abercrombie, Marie Gawley and once again the Corus Hotel for their generous donations to the Silent Auction.

To the many helpers on the night, my sincere thanks. Special thanks go to Bob Wynne for all his work in collecting the monies and guidance and to my wife Colleen, for all her support and assistance both on the day and prior to the Auction.

It was a great night that was enjoyed by all.

It is almost impossible that one man can fall in love with a footy club as quickly as our 2004 President’s Award winner has done. Last year’s Annual Report carried the story of how we wanted to create an entity called East Coast Enterprises to provide a solid and on going base for future income streams to the Club.

No sooner was the ink dry on that plan, than the man I call East Coast’s Fairy Godmother materialised. He had always been around but the time for heavy involvement wasn’t right. I’ll never forget the night in February this year when I met this man for dinner in Castle Hill. I went in seeking his company’s financial support and came out not only with that but also having secured our Club’s new Chairman of the Sponsorship, Fundraising and Community Support program.

Steve Gawley is a hopeless West Coast Eagles tragic. He has always done, and always will do whatever he can to support his beloved club. His move to Sydney some years ago allowed him to discover a Football Club here where he can fulfil his enormous passion that he has for the Eagles’ brand.

Steve not only invests his own money without any fanfare, but he is virtually single-handedly responsible for the legion of corporate sponsorship that we now enjoy. The innovation of the home match day sponsor and our ability to be able to offer them great entertaining facilities from the balcony at Blueys, meant that we had more companies wanting to participate then there were home matches.

A more warm hearted and generous man you wouldn’t find. East Coast are delighted that he has chosen to call this football club his home and I am proud to acknowledge Steve as our President’s Award winner for season 2004.

One often wonders how we get through each season as we do. It is of course due to the many volunteers we are lucky enough to have. Sometimes there are more jobs than people, as was the case this season. But there is always someone who stands up and makes themselves available to take on an extra responsibility. He loves his sport no matter whether it is cricket, or football. The year is totally taken up with an addiction for both and fortunately it is with East Coast that he spends his winter weekends.

Alan Brotherston was made a Life Member of the Club in 2001 and he was overwhelmed with that honour. I suspect that he will be equally honoured with the 2004 Club Person of the Year Award. He deserves it wholeheartedly for the effort he always puts in to whatever task he takes on. This year it was once again as Team Manager for his beloved U/18’s and then backed up every day as the First Grade Manager as well.

His devotion and commitment to the Club is unwavering.

This award was introduced to cater for the growth in the Club and to acknowledge people who do so much behind the scenes. We have many such volunteers who we trust are recognised in the various team and committee reports.

However it is important to recognise very special and largely unheralded work from certain individuals. In 2004 we are delighted to acknowledge Frank & Leonie Ure. Their input in so many areas of the Club’s activities is outstanding. Two nicer people you couldn’t meet and who, like so many others are the “heart and soul” of the footy Club. Nothing is ever too difficult for them. Frank will ring to ask if there is something that needs to be done. If so, he and Leonie are there like a shot.

Thankyou to the Ures, and we trust that this Award sits very comfortably on your mantelpiece.

The Leading Goal kicker in the Club was for many years awarded to the player who kicked the most across all our grades of footy, no matter where they played or how often. A couple of years ago we changed that to recognise 1st Grade senior goals only.

In 2004 there were 25 different goal scorers, with once again the Eagles lacking that big marking target player in the forward line. Interestingly however the First Grade team was only two goals away from being the Club with the second highest “For” in the competition.

Leading the charge of goal kickers was Nick Trask with 47 goals. An elusive and extremely creative and talented footballer Nick would be the first to admit that 47 just wasn’t enough and that season 2005 will see him back recharged and ready to go. But nevertheless the goals are on the board for 2004 and we congratulate Nick on his season and winning the Banjo Books “Leading Goalkicker Award for 2004.

This award has always automatically gone to the winner of the Best & Fairest trophy in First Grade. This trophy will now be awarded to that player who displays exemplary form both on and off the field in relation to overall Club contribution.

Ben Macnamara has had an outstanding season having only joined East Coast at the beginning of this year from UNSW/ES. Not only has he been named as Footballer of the Year at the Eagles, Ben won the Club Champion trophy and the highly sought after Players’ Player trophy.

For the last couple of years Ben’s name has been in the Umpires’ little black book but in season 2004 he displayed exemplary conduct and was rewarded with the Runner Up position in the prestigious Phelan Medal for the Best & fairest player in the Sydney AFL Premier League.

His rebound style of football off the halfback flank caused heartache for the Club statisticians as he continually picked up 30 and 40 possessions each match constantly turning defence into attack.

We congratulate Ben Macnamara on a wonderful season.

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. FOOTBALL OPERATIONS MANAGER

Graeme Merkel

The year commenced with great enthusiasm and a determination by all concerned to build on the on field performances achieved in 2003. Unfortunately we lost several players who decided to widen their life experiences by travelling overseas, but this was more than made up for by experienced new recruits in Ben Macnamara, Nick Trask, Kingsley Hutcherson, Kristian Pearson and Joel Keating. All of these recruits made valuable contributions to the Club, both on and off the field during the year. We also welcomed back Gus Seebeck, Gavin Walsh and Blake Ure, who all missed a substantial part of the 2003 season through injury. With the quality of the additional players and the development of the remaining players, a place in the final four this year was aimed for and expected.

Looking back on the year, it appears that the First Grade team did not achieve their potential with the talent of players available; however an excellent base is in place for our quest for a finals berth in 2005. Certainly the last six games of the year were excellent, beating all teams except the eventual Premiers but earlier losses or draws, especially against lower ranked teams made the Club’s aim of making the Finals extremely difficult.

The Reserve Grade team again had an excellent season, unfortunately again losing in the Preliminary Final. Coaching a Reserve Grade team with players being elevated to and returning from First Grade, is always a difficult task, but this team was a tight knit group and even the unfortunate few who could not be included in the side some weeks were very much part of the team. This reflects a lot of credit on all those involved in the team.

The Under 18 team again preformed creditably. It was always going to be difficult for coaches and players, playing against very good sides one week and then against weak sides the next in a lop sided competition. Trevor Hangan and his assistants can look back with a great deal of satisfaction on the way their players have developed during the year eventually losing to the eventual Premiers in the elimination final.

I would like to thank all coaches and managers for their efforts during the year. Especially I would like to thank Alan Brotherston who not only carried out his duties as the under 18’s manager, but also stepped up and managed the First Grade team for most of the year.

A great deal of credit for our successes this year is due to our first rate medical staff. Matt Stewart our physiotherapist and Rudi Bylsma our trainer, both of whom are experts in their field, played a big part in our injury management endeavours. Excellent news for the club is both Matt and Rudi have committed to remain with us in 2005.

I would also like to specially thank the members of the Club Executive who have continued to give me great support in attracting talented players to the East Coast Eagles and providing the best possible facilities for all players.

We will go into the 2005 season full of hope, enthusiasm and commitment, determined to make our Club the very best in the Sydney Football Premier League.

Although the U/18’s did make third spot on the ladder to get the second chance, two losses in the finals meant a disappointing end to the season. The team had a season of significant highs and lows but do have a number of players who will fit in easily to the higher grades. Unfortunately St. George proved to be too good for us in the First semifinal and went on to take out the Premiership by one point against Pennant Hills.

The East Coast Eagles team had a 12/4 win loss ratio which included the highest score ever recorded being 37-15 (237) against Campbelltown and the lowest score ever 3-3 (21) against North Shore who proved again to be our bogey side, even though they finished out of the Finals campaign. The U/18’s also had the second and third highest scores ever in the history of the Eagles with 236 points against Holroyd Parramatta and 202 against the hapless Campbelltown.

Les Jarjoura returned to the Eagles nest to assist Trevor Hangan in the coaching duties at training and also attended matches when he was not away following his son Luke in the Canberra league.

Apart from Trent Goodrem, who played the whole season in First Grade when not on Rams or representative duty, Ben Rogers was the only player who managed to gain a start in a very strong First Grade side playing five games in the early part of the season.

Fourteen of the twenty seven players used in 2004 are still eligible for next season, along with another six players who played for the Redbacks but are registered as Eagles’ players.

Nathan Peters finished as the Eagles’ highest goal scorer in the competition with a total of 74 which included a career high of 14 against Campbelltown.

Two junior Falcons namely Timothy Kear and James Mann made their U/18 debut in 2004, with the pint sized dynamo Timmy featuring strongly in the Finals series and kicking some vital goals to get the team into the business end of the season. EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. Alex Wynne also had five matches in the Eagles U/18’s and would have played in the Final series if he did not have other priorities.

The most satisfying win for the season was an away match against Wollongong. The team looked professional with the latest team shirts and played out of their skins to record a 40 point win. Another notable win was in the last away match of the season against the Southern Sharks when the winning margin of 122 points proved to be just enough to scrape into third position on the ladder thus enabling the double chance in the Finals. 2005 also marked the entry of Riverview into the competition and the team will recall the “fairy” episode for many years to come.

The team was capably led throughout the season by the captain Jared Madden who is keen to take his football to a higher level and follow in the footsteps of his two older brothers. The appointed vice captains were Ben Rogers and Michael Murrell the former with a lot of experience and the latter returning to the Eagles fold after a stint with the Redbacks in 2003. Both were major ball winners and are expected to have many more games in the Eagles colours.

The team lost Jeremy Cocks before the season even started when he injured his knee at training for a state javelin championship. The backline was strengthened with the inclusion of Sam Forrest who would have featured heavily in the best player voting prior to an almost season ending hip injury. Sam is to be congratulated for his efforts in returning for the Finals campaign despite not being 100% fit as he was a strong contributor who marked the opposition’s best forward each week. He will be a tower of strength in 2004 and should be considered for a leadership position.

After much coaxing, Ian Manson returned to the field but with injuries, work commitments, family issues and other sporting endeavors he did not feature too heavily in the starting line ups. This was a pity as he could have some potential if he put in a strong pre season.

Five players namely Tom Baldwin, Stephen Diasinos, Jared Madden, Michael Murrell and Nathan Peters took the oval in all eighteen matches played by the U/18’s this season. Brad Ure returned to the Eagles after a season spent at basketball having a magnificent year to be one of the midfield dynamos and is another player who will follow his brother’s lead to push for a senior spot. Brad was also elated to get his favourite number 14 jumper back as Chris Cottee moved up the ranks. As expected Craig Stokes was a major force in 2004 but did struggle through some games carrying persistent hamstring or shin injuries. He was consistently playing off half back and leaving opponents in his wake.

Fellow Central Coast player Tom Baldwin created many Eagles’ opportunities and his early season form would have had him as an unbackable winner for the team’s Best and Fairest but with his mate Tim Hillman giving the game away mid season, it was difficult for Tom to attend training and this may have contributed towards a slackening in his domination. Sam Brotherston, the player with the distinction of attending the most training sessions, had a capable season in a strong backline but needs to ensure he is fit enough to recover and mark his direct opponent if the ball is turned over.

Brett Rizzo could always be relied on to fill a gap in the forward or backline when he remembers which ground we are playing at. Despite putting in a full pre season, Sam Wood took up a position in real estate which prevented him playing most weekends. He was persuaded to return for the final match against the Redbacks but the day prior to the match had to pull out due to a sudden interstate family illness. Stuart McKinley showed only glimpses of what he is really capable of and concentration on socialising whilst his parents where on an overseas jaunt towards the end of the season did not help his cause. Joshua Walsh was a real stalwart in defence when able to play and his opponents knew they were in for a hectic time as his tackling was fierce.

After finding his feet Andrew Weaver had a massive mid season as the after match awards were consistently coming his way. He must have a good CD collection by now. The other Brad in the team had a Whale of a time but unfortunately had an injury just prior to the finals. After a slow start Stephen Diasinos finished the season with many stints on the ball. Both Brad and Stephen will be a lot stronger in 2005 after the experience they gained this season. Chris Moore got used to playing a defensive role

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. which was different from what he had been used to in the past and was one of the players whose voice could be heard screaming out for the ball. He was also a bit of a goal sneak as he managed to get into open space eluding his direct opponent.

Michael Laird showed plenty of speed and was another goal sneak finishing with 16 which were mainly scored prior to his mid season long vacation to America. Michael is also an extremely capable baseball player and is now weighing up if he wants to concentrate on pursuing that as his major sport whilst studying in the USA. James Fitzpatrick also returned to the team after a year off but with his late start to training and finding a full time city job just after the season started, he found it difficult to get a lot of game time. Hopefully he will get motivated earlier for next season.

The brothers in arms Liam and Jared Patira were consistent performers and took up key positions. Liam had to do most of the ruckwork and was always willing to use his strength to break down opponents. Jared’s marking is his major strength and he is an accurate goal kicker that even the Swan’s Nick Davis could learn from. In the record scoring match against Campbelltown when the coach was only taking players off if a point was kicked, Jared was still forced off. But he was quickly returned to the oval just prior to the siren to enable him to get his tenth goal. Ten goals no points is a mighty effort. Maybe Jared could give Gus some tips for next season.

Scott Mabey, Chris Webber and Michael White were all late starters to the fray and had some significant interruptions with family commitments, work and holidays but should now be aware of the level they need to achieve to make a major contribution to the team goals. Chris took up a stint with Parramatta late in the season to try and get more game time.

The off field support from all players’ parents and friends was much appreciated. Some need special mention for their contributions. Rick Laird for the thankless task of boundary umpiring, runner when required and also in the Finals as our water carrier. Rick would turn his hand towards whatever was needed and also supplied the after match snakes, cordial and ice. Gerry Fitzpatrick also relieved as boundary umpire and took the goal flags many times. Other goal umpires included Greg Murrell, Ian McKinley, Paul Madden and Ian Rogers. Thanks also to Paul Madden and Frank Ure for timekeeping and the latter for his annual stint on the pre final training session barbecue. Greg Murrell for “volunteering” as “fill in Manager” when Alan was away at his parent’s golden wedding anniversary.

But an extra special effort was again put in by Bruce Stokes who performed the runner’s duties once again and also assisted with training along with the ever reliable Rick Laird. Les Jarjoura also turned his hand to running duties in the big games including the Finals and both he and Bruce really needed to concentrate to ensure they were not on the oval together by using the interchange.

Mike Pilkington again put his hand up as the major team sponsor and the players really look forward to those match day best player awards. Mike you are an absolute champion and we apologise for not making a stronger run at taking out the Flag as your continued support deserves better. Mike was always on the phone checking the score from his son’s football when the teams clashed or if he was away on business.

Graeme Merkel did a great job looking after all the football equipment and administrative matters and Blake Ure did the bulk of the first aid supply needs along with Colin Moore when called on. Also thanks go to Matt Stewart and Rudi Bylsma for medical issues when they were able to.

At the time of going to press the make up of the U/18 support team is unknown for next season but there is much to look forward to with a new batch of players to join those who remain from 2004. This could very well include the seven players who featured in the Redbacks squad which put the Eagles out of finals contention including their captain Travis Thripp.

Coach – Scott Abercrombie Manager – Ross Abercrombie

TROPHY WINNERS Best and Fairest Liam Madden Runner Up Jason Duss Coach’s Award Peter Bleus Most Improved Ash Loxton Players’ Player Jason Duss

Another year over and another third place finish which in the context of the season as a whole, was a pretty positive result. At the beginning of pre-season in December 2003 the coaching staff believed that Reserve Grade would be competitive and if things went our way, would be right amongst it at the business end of the season.

Yet again we saw a large turnover of players from the previous year’s squad with an exodus of players off overseas to satisfy the travel bugs within, as well as the usual player losses through retirement and injury. This loss of numbers was counter acted by a good group of kids coming out of last year’s U/18’s and an increase in total senior numbers through some very good off season recruiting. This meant that the expectations at the beginning of the season were hopeful but not unrealistic. Our first goal was to play finals and once we had put ourselves in a position to do that, the rest would be a matter of how we performed on the day.

After a rigorous pre-season that saw a players camp at Colo, where the goals and team rules were discussed and established for the entire Senior playing group as well as undertaking a fairly taxing physical program, it was obvious to the coaching staff that there was a very good feeling amongst the players and that there was a determination to perform this season that we had never seen before. This was highlighted by the large number of players who attended the sessions prior to the start of the season and the intensity and enthusiasm with which they approached these training sessions.

From a Reserve Grade point of view this was very exciting because it was the first time in a number of years where we were going into the season not overly concerned about playing numbers. This would become a strength throughout the season with the unprecedented situation of, with the exception of round 3 against St George, having to leave players out of the team on most weeks that they were fit to play. These large numbers of players also assisted in player management as it was not necessary to play guys that were carrying injuries, as had been required in the past, and risk causing further and worse injuries. The most pleasing part about this was the way in which all the players accepted the fact that we had good numbers and that they may be required to miss games during the year, even though they were fit to play. This was a fact that even the coach had to come to grips with and in hindsight it may have been the fact that got him to the end of the season in one piece.

Looking at the season as whole it was pleasing to see the improvements that were made both as a team and by individuals and to see that the processes that had been put into place by the football staff were starting to have a marked effect on the way the East Coast Eagles players approached every part of their football. From preparation through training and playing all the way to what was probably the most noticeable improvement this year and that was injury management and making sure that each player took responsibility for being in the best physical shape for the following week’s game. Matt Stewart can take a lot of the kudos for this change in attitude towards injury ______33 ______2004 YEAR BOOK & Annual Report

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. management and therefore resulting in a situation where there were more players available for selection each week than there has been in the past.

Although Reserve Grade once again finished third, it is a genuinely exciting time to be involved with the team and with the East Coast Eagles as a Club. Although I have been involved with the Club now for twenty years, I see this as the most exciting time for us since we first ventured into the senior ranks. With the quality of player that is coming through the Under 18’s along with the maturing of some of the younger players who have been with the Club for some years now and the successful recruiting work that is being done behind the scenes, I feel that the success that we have all been longing for is much closer than it has ever been before. However, with this being the case it is even more important that as a playing group we maintain the work rate and enthusiasm that was evident this year and have confidence in the processes that have been put in place.

I would like to congratulate all the members of the Reserve Grade squad this year on achieving the improvements and results that they did, however, there were some players who stood out and deserve specific mention here.

To Liam Madden on being voted by the coaches as the “Bill McLeod” Medallist, it is reward for two years of hard work and growth as a player and a person. From the disappointment of not being selected in a Premiership side in 2002, to this year being an integral part of the Reserve Grade machine. Liam’s on field performance each week was always 100% no matter where he was asked to play and his growth as a leader within the entire senior playing group, not just Reserve Grade, was very pleasing. He was always asking the coaches were he could improve his own game and the performance of the team. Liam has indicated that he may join brother Ryan travelling next year and if he does he will be missed greatly not just as a player but also as a friend, however hopefully he gets this out of his system quickly as he should be a vital part of this Club’s playing staff for many years to come. I am sure I am not the only one at the club that wants to see the day when all three Madden boys run out in First Grade. Congratulations Liam on winning the “Bill McLeod” Medal.

Jason Duss was one of the players this year who was on the verge of First Grade selection each week and probably suffered a little from the small number of injuries we had this season. That being the case, as Reserve Grade coach it was a pleasure each week to have Jason in our side. I could always rely on him to set a wonderful example for the younger players in every aspect of the game and his attitude and handling of his situation were a credit to him. Jason’s skill level is amongst the best at the club and through this he brought a new dimension to Reserve Grade footy at the Eagles. He would constantly work with the younger players to assist them with their skills and through his performances they could see the benefits of having great skills rather than just adequate skills. Jason’s leadership and hard work are also qualities that should be copied and all of these things would have contributed to him gaining votes from the coaches and also from his peers in order to win the Players’ Player award. Well done Jason on being Runner Up in the “Bill McLeod” Medal and also winning the Players Player Award for a second year running.

The Coaches Award this year goes to a guy who I have personally played football with or against for a number of years now and it is a pleasure to give him this award. Peter Bleus last year was a shadow of the player he could have been due to work and study commitments. This year Peter turned up at pre-season training, which in itself was an improvement, with a new attitude and a commitment to take on the responsibility that comes with being a senior player around the Club. On the back of a strong pre-season and the shedding of a number of kilos, Peter had one of his best seasons with the Club, if not his best and he was rewarded with a couple of appearances in First Grade. But from a coach’s point of view, the most pleasing aspect of Peter’s season was his emergence as a very good on and off field leader who gained the respect of the players through the strength of his on field performance. Peter your effort and support this year were of great assistance to the coaches this year. Thank you and congratulations.

The Most Improved Player this year eventually came down to a race in two. One was a player playing his first full season of senior football, the other playing his first season of football full stop. The first was Ash Loxton who went from being a shy Under 18 who you didn’t hear much from on the track, to a significant member of the team. The other was Dean Eggleton who came down to have a go at footy and took to it like a duck to water. There were others who showed glimpses like Mitch Clarke, Shannon Hinkley and Stephen Davidson but the first two guys showed a real consistent improvement throughout the season. Dean showed a real interest in learning all he could about the game and when he wasn’t selected to play early in the season made sure he was involved in some way so that he could continue to develop his football. This sort of attitude will see him continue to improve and develop into a regular senior player for the club.

However, the guy that actually receives this award is Ash Loxton. Ash arrived at pre-season this year straight out of last year’s Under 18’s and acted like any other young player would in his first full season of senior footy but it didn’t take long for him to become comfortable in his surroundings. It was evident that Ash had good fitness but ______34 ______2004 YEAR BOOK & Annual Report

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. needed some work on his skill level in order to become a regular player in Reserve Grade. Throughout the year Ash rarely missed a training session and also did extra sessions in order to work on this. He became a valuable member of the team both as a player and a personality and this was illustrated by the reaction of the players in the Semi final when Ash was knocked out in the second quarter. With continued hard work and the same attitude as he showed this year, Ash will continue to improve and it will not be long before he finds himself playing First Grade football. Well done Ash.

On a personal note, this season would not have been possible without the support and assistance of a lot of people and it would be impossible to list all of them here. However, I would like to extend my thanks to all the people that have had an involvement with Reserve Grade this year. That being said, there are a number of people who do warrant a special thank you.

To my Assistant Coaches Phillip Bester and Andrew Moylan your help and guidance was a god send this year and allowed me to play and coach without any concerns on game day. The last two seasons working under Mick Knuppel have been great for me and what I have learned from him will hold me in good stead in my coaching future. Thanks Mick for all your help over the last couple of years and be warned that I may call you for advice in the future.

To the guy who takes all the administrative worry out of game day, the Manager that rules with an iron fist, Ross Abercrombie thanks on so many levels but mostly for keeping everyone in line and allowing me to concentrate on the requirements of coaching and playing. A big thank you goes to Matt Stewart and Rudi Bylsma for their work on the medical side of things which is always important to Reserve Grade in getting a lot of the older players on the park each week, me included. Their biggest achievement this year however was the way in which they changed how players look after their own injuries after games. This resulted in more players being available every week. Thanks again for your wonderful work this season.

To Trevor Hangan and Alan Brotherston and all involved with the Under 18’s thanks for your help through the season. To the Committee, the Supporters and the Players of the East Coast Eagles thank you for your unconditional support throughout the season. It was something that I could rely on every week.

And finally to my family and especially my fiancée Nicole, without your support and good wishes none of this would have been possible. Thank you.

Twenty years as a player at one club is a long time and I have enjoyed every day of those twenty years. Now my involvement with the Club will continue in a non playing capacity and this will throw up new challenges and problems, which I am looking to attack with the same vigour as I did my playing career. I am looking forward to continuing coaching with the Club and working through these exciting times. 2004 was a successful season in many ways but hopefully will be remembered as the starting point of a very successful period for the Club.

TROPHY WINNERS Club Champion Ben Macnamara Runner Up Gus Seebeck Coach’s Award Ryan Fitton Most Improved Matthew Arbon Rising Star Trent Goodrem Players’ Player Ben Macnamara

Coming off a much improved 2003, hopes were high for continued improvement this season. Preparation began the week after finals, and I embarked on a range of initiatives to take the playing group further. The Match Committee met and examined the year and out of a list of 10, identified skill acquisition, stronger bodies and repetition of game plan as the top three key components of preseason training. We held interviews for players in November where we gave them feedback on 2003, identified key areas to develop, set goals for 2004 and heard from them about what they felt they and / or the Club needed. These proved to be most worthwhile.

Pre-season officially started in December with three Sunday sessions, at St Joseph’s College, Mac Uni, and Balmoral, culminating in the Family Christmas Day. Players were issued comprehensive individual programs, and training as a squad began in earnest again mid-January. We welcomed key new recruits Kristian Pearson from Morningside, Ben Macnamara and Joel Keating from Easts, Nick Trask from Sale, Kingsley Hutcherson from South Fremantle, and had new Captain Gus Seebeck back from long- term injury. Adam Lovett graduated and Trent Goodrem was available when not on Rams duty. Some 12-odd players departed for one reason or another, yet we successfully retained our core playing group who, it was expected, would have benefited greatly from 2003. Mark Richardson also departed, as runner and fitness advisor, a role that I took on in addition to coaching.

Pre-season training was varied and fresh, no doubt benefiting partly from my having spent time in December with West Coast. I was able to incorporate many drills, game plans and the warm-up routine as a result of my liaison with John Worsfold’s coaching staff. I thank them for their time and generosity. Boxing became a key component of every session, and this added toughness, which was built on when we went on our Pre-season camp, held at St Joseph’s College’s camp on the Colo River. The camp was a huge success, despite some players not attending, with group leaders marshalling their troops in the games, runs, and most notably in the mascot-stealing and ensuing ransom demands. Joel Keating proved he could host his own tonight show, Pearso’s boys cut and edited ‘Jackass 5’, and points were awarded throughout in a variety of games and activities, from 4-way tug’o’war to nearest the pin. From the Heartbreak Hill run through to the public speaking Joke competition, a great time was had by all. Many players cite this single initiative as the biggest key to our mateship and spirit, displayed in games throughout the season.

______38 ______2004 YEAR BOOK & Annual Report

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. The players set short and long term goals, and we developed our season values. Players aimed to:

• Beat every side at least once • Finish with a % over 100 • Finish with a positive win/loss ratio • Win three games in a row • Finish top 4

The values which our group decided upon:

T = tenacity E = excellence A = accountability M = mateship

Our on-field leaders were chosen and roundly endorsed; they were Gus Seebeck – Captain; Rodney Frost – Vice Captain; and Matt Arbon – Deputy Vice Captain.

On to the season, and we opened against 2003 Premiers Easts, leading for a half but falling away. Missed opportunity, or perhaps some self doubts? These were erased with a thumping 20 + goal win over Balmain, with skipper Gus booting 10. North Shore signalled they would be the team to beat by giving us a work over, a loss which interestingly led to us towards plotting their downfall later in the year. I challenged the players after this game with a question: Can we beat them? Time would tell.

We rounded the half way mark with a string of wins and some losses, all to the top four sides. Our next challenge was to beat sides above us. We began this quest with perhaps our best win of the year, crushing Easts to rewrite our round 1 loss. The confidence continued to grow.

Then came the best win that many supporters can recall, a resounding and comprehensive towelling of North Shore. We proved too tough, disciplined and skilful on the day, and we had answered our question from round 3 in the affirmative: Of course we could beat them!! A heartbreaking draw with Wests, followed by a one point loss the next week to Pennant Hills tested our resolve. Weak players and coaches simply throw up their hands and quit, but we met as a group behind closed doors and made a pact. Yes, we were disappointed missing out on the win, yet we looked to the positives. We were gone against Wests but clawed our way back to get points, and we led Penno until the last seconds. Surely we were close and we set about winning our next five games, perhaps sneaking in to the finals.

Well, we won four! And what great wins they were. We began our finals assault with a win so huge no one expected except the players, crunching Campbelltown (who narrowly lost to Penno the week before) by over 26 goals. Then we knocked off second, St. George at their ground after losing to them by two kicks a few weeks before and to get that elusive third win in a row, we defeated Pennant Hills in a classic encounter at our home ground. We had to beat Wests, and have St George and Penno lose games, to sneak in. Well, we did our part, winning our third game of the season at Wagener, and entered the rooms singing our song to learn that Penno had lost in an upset. Incredibly, what so few thought possible was unfolding; the dominoes were falling, we had given ourselves a chance to achieve our final goal for the year.

We took on North Shore at home, and after an even first half with scores locked, we fell behind and at ¾ time most thought the game all over. Not us! We conspired to kick six goals in a winning final quarter and had the eventual Premiers wobbling and spent, before missing two shots at goals that would have got us level with all the momentum. We missed, and the rest is history. A small loss to a side very thankful we did not get into the final four.

We concluded season 2004 as one of the “in-form” sides, and can be proud of the great steps forward we have made. We met all but one of our season goals, beating every team, and finishing with four wins in a row, and most notably, an extremely healthy percentage of over 110%. We groomed some great ______39 ______2004 YEAR BOOK & Annual Report

EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. talent, in Goodrem and Lovett, new players like Ben Macnamara rose to new heights, being runner-up in the Phelan medal. Blake Ure rightfully took on the crown as the best full back in the competition. We finally had a potent forward line, with Gus and Nick in the 40's. We had seven players play every game, actually crushed teams which is testament to our hunger, and had mainly close losses, proof of our pride in any scrap. We finished with a positive Win/Loss ratio, we played 36 players, yet maintained a very strong core group who remained virtually injury-free and playing some good football. Most critically, I can safely say that, as a playing group, we have graduated, we have “come of age”. If 2003 was our baptism, this year was our confirmation. Nine and half wins doubled 2003, and we have gone from last to 5th in two seasons. The signs are ominous. This must be built upon on 2005. It is very close.

Another example of our continued improvement was our positive Free Kick count: 261 FOR, 235 AGAINST. Apart from a few exceptions, our players were respectful and disciplined and have won the praises of the umpires. They “enjoy” umpiring our games, and any coach will gladly take an extra 26 possessions at the start of the season. This points again to players following, by and large, team rules.

As I prepare my final report, regretfully retiring as coach due solely to the ever increasing demands of a young family and work, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the players for their undivided loyalty and support as I strived to change the playing culture at our football club. Their commitment to excellence and our team goals, and their faith in me and the direction I steered them, I will not forget and has resulted in our close bond. I urge them and the Club to maintain this direction: it is bearing fruit. And crucially, the great improvement is being made by the local players, who “own” this club and see it as their home. New players come and go, and the impact made by some new faces this year, is to be applauded. They add to the core group who deserve every success. To see kids come through the system and play very good Senior football gives all of us great pride and satisfaction, for these are the fruits of our labour and their coaches in previous years, their families and support networks, the Mums and Dads that drive them to training and wash their clothes, share this credit.

My job is made easier through the hard work of many. I would like to publicly acknowledge the amazing amount of work Phillip Bester puts in behind the scenes, as Chairman of Selectors. His job is never ending and his support much appreciated. Thanks also, in no particular order, to both Scott Abercrombie and Trevor Hangan, for their support and unity, and to Alan Brotherston for taking on the added role as Team manager. Fantastic work Al! Appreciation too goes to the tireless work of Peter Physick as President, who is now seeing the success his club deserves, and to the off field work of Steve Gawley and his band of supporters who have given our club the very generous injection of sponsorship. Thanks to Mike Pilkington, a fellow footy person, for all his support and generosity, and for his clear head and ability to see clearly when madness surrounds. Many thanks for the professional work of Matt Stewart, for coming on camp and his regular updates. His advice and care was, as usual, most professional. Thanks too to Rudi Bylsma, Loges, Richard Lee, Frank Ure, and Ellen Hawes for their work. Thanks also to Jan Frost again and the loyal supporters who follow our fortunes without prejudice. To Simon Marshall, Bob Harvey and their Stats team, thank you! A hard job, but a critical link in the chain. To our myriad of runners, Jason, Nathan and Richard, thanks! Naturally there may be omissions, and if so, I apologise.

Finally, thanks to my family, Lib, Jas and Tom, who allowed me to indulge in this crazy passion of mine, and celebrated our wins and stood strong when the odd down times occurred.

I hope I leave the playing group, and club, better for my involvement, and hope we have all learned things other than footy along the way. I am certainly better for having served you. Season 2005 will be very successful for East Coast, deservedly so.
