AUTHOR OF MODERN AND ANTJENT GEOGRAPHY FOR THE USE OF SCHOOLS. STEREOTYPED BY J. HOWE. PHILADELPHIA: BLANQHARD AND LEA. 1851. G- PREFATORY NOTE INDEX OF DR. BUTLER'S ANTIENT ATLAS. It is to be observed in this Index, which is made for the sake of complete and easy refer- ence to the Maps, that the Latitude and Longitude of Rivers, and names of Countries, are given from the points where their names happen to be written in the Map, and not from any- remarkable point, such as their source or embouchure. The same River, Mountain, or City &c, occurs in different Maps, but is only mentioned once in the Index, except very large Rivers, the names of which are sometimes repeated in the Maps of the different countries to which they belong. The quantity of the places mentioned has been ascertained, as far as was in the Author's power, with great labor, by reference to the actual authorities, either Greek prose writers, (who often, by the help of a long vowel, a diphthong, or even an accent, afford a clue to this,) or to the Greek and Latin poets, without at all trusting to the attempts at marking the quantity in more recent works, experience having shown that they are extremely erroneous.

II. de GOEJE. INTRODUCTION.

• The Greek Epigraphic Evidence for Healer Women
THE GREEK EPIGRAPHIC EVIDENCE FOR HEALER WOMEN IN THE GREEK WORLD Jennifer C. Irving Bachelor of Ancient History (Honours, 1st Class) Department of Ancient History, Macquarie University Thesis submitted to Macquarie University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Supervisors: Dr. Ian Plant, Associate Prof. Paul McKechnie 10th October 2015 1 Declaration This work has not been submitted for a higher degree to any other university or institution. This thesis conforms to the length of a doctoral thesis and is no longer than 100,000 words. ___________________________________ Jennifer C. Irving Abstract The ancient healer woman is not a well-documented phenomenon. She is seen as a silent figure who challenged the boundaries of society, based on the assumption that women were seen negatively in skilled occupations. This thesis challenges such assumptions, then demonstrates how healer women were valued in their communities and in a comprehensive catalogue of epigraphic evidence. Individual case studies create a more nuanced understanding of the Greek healer woman. The thesis explores the healer woman in her own context and in doing so, answers questions concerning her education, status, and reputation. The evidence set forth in this thesis has shown that not all healer women were challenging the boundaries of their societies, but rather that they could be respected as professional and skilled authorities. The arguments of this thesis are supported by discussion of associated Greek terms, and show that literary evidence was not always a direct reflection of reality. This thesis also leads the way for future research on Roman evidence from later periods, and gives recognition of a public acknowledgement of the contribution of healer women.

Schmidt. The steps leading up to it are uneven. This is especially true of first steps. It is due in part to the writer's inex perience, which will be seen to decrease as the work goes along. It seemed to the writer important that sources so valuable should be put at the disposal of many — shall we say the world of scholarship? — as soon as possible, even though imperfectly. That was one cause of early unevenness. Another was the writer's lack of information in the early part of his work. He was aware of this and sought by diligent inquiry to fill in his gaps. Some of this information was available from the beginning (Classical Philology XXXVII [191+2] 21+5 f.) in the writer's immediate neighborhood$ it was not made available to him. Without it he set out with what speed he could muster on the course of publication. He has never seen the originals. Even the accumulating copies came to his hands slowly after work on them by others. This much for the record- With this, publication took shape as followso My own work proceeds from AJSL LIII (1937) 126-10* and ZDMG XCI (1937) 652-72 to AJSL LVII (191+0) 197-228, 330^07 31+1-1+30 and LVIII (I9i+l) 169-76.
