OPENING PANDORA’S BOX David Cameron’s Referendum Gamble on EU Membership Credit: The Economist. By Christina Hull Yale University Department of Political Science Adviser: Jolyon Howorth April 21, 2014 Abstract This essay examines the driving factors behind UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s decision to call a referendum if the Conservative Party is re-elected in 2015. It addresses the persistence of Euroskepticism in the United Kingdom and the tendency of Euroskeptics to generate intra-party conflict that often has dire consequences for Prime Ministers. Through an analysis of the relative impact of political strategy, the power of the media, and British public opinion, the essay argues that addressing party management and electoral concerns has been the primary influence on David Cameron’s decision and contends that Cameron has unwittingly unleashed a Pandora’s box that could pave the way for a British exit from the European Union. 1 Morto Guglielmo Epifani: ex leader della Cgil e segretario del Pd di Redazione 07 Giugno 2021 – 19:21 Genova. E’ morto a 71 anni l’ex leader della Cgil e ex segretario del PdGuglielmo Epifani. Epifani, attualmente deputato di Leu, è morto dopo una breve malattia. Nato a Roma nel 1950 da genitori di origine campana, socialista, nel 1979 incomincia la sua carriera di dirigente sindacale con l’incarico di segretario generale aggiunto della categoria dei lavoratori poligrafici e cartai. Vice di Sergio Cofferati dal 1994 al 2002, a seguito della conclusione del mandato di Cofferati, diviene segretario generale della Cgil fino al 2010. Alle elezioni politiche italiane del 2013 viene candidato alla Camera dei deputati come capolista del Partito Democratico, venendo eletto deputato della XVII Legislatura. L’11 maggio 2013 è stato nominato, in seguito alle dimissioni di Pier Luigi Bersani, segretario del Partito Democratico fino alle elezione a leader dem di Matteo Renzi il 15 dicembre seguente. “La vita di Guglielmo Epifani è stata un esempio di partecipazione democratica e impegno sociale, sempre al servizio dei lavoratori e dei più deboli.
