LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE KENOSHA COMMUNITY SAILING CENTER

I welcome all who read this to our 2014 Kenosha Community Sailing Center Catalog. It is a reflection of our growth and of our community and an invita- tion to come and be a part of our activities at the KCSC.

The KCSC, located at the Kenosha Yacht Club at the harbor on beautiful Lake Michigan has been established for the purposes of educating youth and adults in the sport of sailing as we partner with the community, local organi- zations and our schools. Safe and fun sailing, understanding and caring for the waters of our lake and encouraging participation in our racing program are all priorities as we offer opportunities throughout the year.

As President of the KCSC Board, I am excited to offer this catalog and I extend a big thank you to all our advertisers. You have helped assure that the quality of our sailing program continues this year and we are grateful. Last year we saw our best year at the KCSC as we welcomed more youth and adult students than past years. In anticipation of an even bigger year we have included our 2014 class schedule, our contact information and an upcoming schedule of events.

I invite you to enjoy this catalog, read the articles, learn more about who we are, patronize our ad- vertisers and come on down to the KYC and sail with the KCSC.

I Wish You Fair Winds and Smooth Sailing!

Joyce Rinehart, President, KCSC

ABOUT THE KCSC

The Kenosha Community Sailing Center (KCSC) is first and foremost an educational collaborative effort between the Kenosha Yacht Club (KYC) and local organizations and schools. KCSC’s primary goal is to educate Kenosha youth in the sport of sailing while integrating academic, leadership, and life skills. The KCSC also promotes access to the Kenosha Harbor and the resources of Lake Michigan.

The KCSC is always looking for individuals and busi- nesses who would like to donate boats for use in our sailing program. Unlike other community sailing cen- ters, we do not charge our participants a hourly or daily fee for the use of boats. We’re able to do this thanks to a quality team of individuals donating their time and labor for the upkeep of our boats and facili- ties. We also gladly accept goods and services to help us keep our rates the lowest you will find anywhere.

HISTORY

The KCSC was established in the spring of 2008 as a registered 501 (c)(3) nonprofit. In the summer of 2009, the KCSC created an introductory sailing course through collaboration with KYC members and community teachers. In 2009, the KCSC also received a grant to pay for a boathouse building on the KYC dock which provides the organization work, storage and sail loft space. This building has been instrumental in allowing for the continued growth of the organization.

PARTNERSHIP WITH HARBORSIDE ACADEMY

Harborside Academy was one of the principle partners at the inception of the KCSC and has joined with the KCSC on a number of projects. Harborside principal Bill Haithcock’s support of the KCSC has been unwavering since its incep- tion. In fact, three of the founding Board Mem- bers of the KCSC were Harborside teachers. Over 100 students of Harborside Academy have learned to sail at the KCSC over the past five years. Other KUSD schools, such as Curtis Strange, are now coming on board and having their students experience the lifelong sport of Sailing. We hope to increase KUSD participation in the KCSC in the coming years.

The Harborside Racing Team was started two years ago with the help of Bill Haithcock. In the past two years, Harborside Academy has started to compete in High School Regattas as part of MISSA, the Midwest Inter- scholastic Sailing Association. The racing season goes from April through June in the spring, and September through November in fall. There is also a summer racing series that is open to all and not affiliated with any High School. If your child wants to get involved in racing even if they don’t attend Harborside or is interested in starting a team at their High School, please contact the KCSC at: [email protected].

SEA SCOUTS

Sea Scouts is a youth program provided by the Boy Scouts of America. You can join the Sea Scouts if you are between the ages of 14 to 21. Some of our Sea Scouts are Boy Scouts, were Boy Scouts and some were never in the program.

Most of the program is devoted to on-the-water activities. The summer sailing schedule starts in May and ends in October. Some nights are devoted to pleas- ure sailing and some evenings we race in the harbor. Sea Scouts maintain and use a fleet of boats at the Kenosha Yacht Club. They are available for use by Scouts who have demonstrated basic abilities and safety sense on the water.

There is also training aimed at increasing the skills of the Scouts with part of the program is devoted to advancement. That’s where you get to demonstrate skill in boat handling and seamanship. Most of the training and familiarization is really handled by Scouts who have been in the program a few years. There is also a focus on leadership and communications. That’s part of Sea Scouts too. It’s up to the Scouts to decide what THEY want to do and how THEY will plan the activity.

Will Sea Scouting be right for your son or daughter? Most Scouts seem to enjoy the program and are proud of the confidences they have gotten from the experience. The program is greatly helped by the examples of the Scouts who return to our program in the summer during college. If interested, for more information, con- tact Tim Helgesen at 262-652-2320 or at: [email protected]. 5

SAFETY & ATTIRE All students and coaches are required to wear a lifejacket (PFD). It is recommended that you bring your own personal lifejacket, which insures your size and fit, but we do have lifejackets you can bor- row. Students do not have to know how to swim. However, it is entirely possible that you will end up in the water, so you should be comfortable in deep water wearing a lifejacket. For adult sailors re- member it is cool on the water, so please bring a jacket or sweatshirt. Soft-soled shoes (white soles) are required. If it’s raining but there’s no , we will sail, so bring a rain jacket. Sailing is a fun sport, but it can be dangerous if sailors behave recklessly. Disregard for sailing instructors and reck- less behavior will not be tolerated. Students will not be allowed to return. Refunds will not be given to students who are removed for reckless behavior.

FEATURED ACTIVITY AT THE KYC: FLYBOARD WISCONSIN

Over the years we have partnered with various organizations to provide additional activities at the KYC. This last year we invited Flyboard® classes on our premises. Even though Flyboard Wisconsin is not affiliated with the Kenosha Yacht Club or the Kenosha Community Sailing Center, we enjoy the publicity this amazing activity has brought to our organization.

The Flyboard® which looks like a snowboard with a giant, 55-foot fire hoses attached to it can turn almost anyone instantly into a superhero capable of flying above the lake surface. Flyboard Wiscon- sin on Lake Michigan is the only officially recognized Flyboard® instruction in Kenosha County.

Learning to operate the Flyboard® is much easier than you might think. When given proper instruc- tion almost anyone will start flying the Flyboard® dur- ing their first 5 minutes in the water. Some people will have a natural ability and a faster learning curve, but almost anyone will have a lot of fun during their first ride and it only gets better each time.

With plenty of nearby water, Kenosha has always been a great place for lake sports like sailing, paddle board- ing, and kite surfing. This year there’s an absolutely in- sane leisure attraction, one to add to your summer to- do list…Flyboarding. You can contact Flyboard Wiscon- sin to schedule your flight at www.flyboardwi.com.

RACING AT THE KYC & BUCCANEER FLEET Thursday nights are KYC race nights. In addition we race every other Sunday throughout the sum- mer. Keelboats come to the KYC dock to pick up crew members, and if you have taken a keelboat class, you can crew.

Buccaneer Fleet

Lake Michigan’s fastest growing one design fleet is Kenosha’s Buccaneer fleet. The fleet races both Thursday nights and Sundays giving everyone plenty of opportunities to get out on the lake. Why is this growing? The Buccaneer is relatively cheap as far as boats go. Competitive boats can be found for as little as $1000. The Buccaneer gives you three-sail racing in a comfortable stable boat. It is typically raced with a crew of two. This simple sloop is a blast to sail, and easy to maintain. The Buccaneer Class is friendly and family oriented. If you are interested in learning more about this style of boat to eventually own and race, contact [email protected]. Sum- mer storage available on the KYC at a rate of $100 for the entire summer.

KEY FEATURES:

-Great Class for Daysailing or competitive Racing

-Fast Planing Hull Design

-Sloop Rig, Roller Furling Jib

-Integral Spinnaker Launch Tube

-It's a "sit in" rather than a "sit on" boat

-Easy to trailer, rig and store

-Launches from a trailer or crane 21

KYC OFF-SHORE RACING

In addition to regular Thursday night buoy races and Sunday sailing/races, KYC members can be found competing in other regattas.

Our sailors have a long tradition of success in Lake Michigan off-shore races. Similar to the famed Chi- cago-Mackinac race, the Hook is a 3-day race up Lake Michigan, around Death’s Door at the top of Door County, and down Green Bay.

KYC boats regularly compete in many other races such as the Lake Michigan Singlehanded Society’s short- handed races, the Queen’s Cup which is a night race from Milwaukee across the lake and other local races between Racine to Waukegan.

THANK YOU DANIEL BERNOULLI

Anyone who takes a sailing class is introduced to Bernoulli’s Principle. The in- structor probably won’t mention the term Bernoulli’s Principle but will talk about the physics of sailing and how a sailboat can sail into the wind. This arti- cle was not written as an introduction to Bernoulli’s principle but as an expla- nation of how Bernoulli’s principle introduced me to sailing. If you are inter- ested in Bernoulli’s Principle or the physics of sailing, there is an unlimited amount of information online. Daniel Bernoulli was a Swiss Physician, doctor and Mathematician who lived in the seventeen hundreds. His principle is the foundation of many en- gineering applications, such as aircraft wing design and carburetors. It also explains how a pitcher can throw a curve ball and a sailboat can sail into the wind. My introduction to sailing was different than most people who sail. It started in the early seventies when I was in college. I had enrolled in a class titled Conceptual Physics. My counselor explained that it was a class where we would study physics concepts without doing the difficult math. It sounded like the perfect class for me. We were intro- duced to Bernoulli’s Principle in that class and it changed my life. I was so impressed with Bernoulli’s Principle that I did a research paper on the subject. Twenty five years later Bernoulli introduced me to sailing. While on vacation in Northern Wisconsin my father-in-law, Ron Althoff, purchased a Sun- fish sailboat for our lake front property up North. Some time during that summer Ron challenged me to sail his . I said “how hard can it be, it’s science?” and then I told him all I knew about Ber- noulli’s Principle. I did take the Sunfish out sailing that day and learned how to handle the boat and get it from our cabin on the Trout River to Alder Lake and back. I sailed that little Sunfish many times that summer. Because of that experience I learned to windsurf and now own a thirty foot sailboat that we sail on Lake Michigan. I truly believe that my Conceptual Physics Class in College and Ber- noulli’s Principle is the reason that I am a sailor. Author: Gary Powell, KYC Member 24
