Job Title: Wild-Land Department: DPS Reports To: Fire Chief or designee FLSA Status/Union:

SUMMARY: Under the supervision of Fire Chief or designee, this position shall serve as a Wildland Firefighter with the Fire Department. This position is responsible for protecting lives and property endangered by fire. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of the Fire Chief or designee.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: below is not intended to be an all-inclusive of the duties, skills, and responsibilities of the Wildland Firefighter  Serves as a firefighter or engine operator during prescribed burning and suppression activities, such as nozzle operation, directing fire streams, and building ventilation.  Participates in pre-fire plan surveys and preventative maintenance and repairs on various equipment such as fire engines, tractors, mowers, chain saws, and hand tools.  May have the potential to assist other refuges as well as other federal or state agencies throughout the nation with prescribed burning and .  Will be required to achieve an arduous rating on the "Pack Test," which requires you to walk 3 miles with a 45 pound backpack in 45 minutes or less. The Pack Test is correlated to measures of aerobic and muscular fitness as well as performance in field tasks such as working with hand tools or carrying loads over rough terrain.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. High School Diploma, or GED equivalent; 2. S-130/S-190, I-100 and L-180 certified; must have Incident Qualification Card (red card) and 3. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico driver’s license and be insurable by City’s vehicle insurance provider.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Fire and emergency scene activities may require lifting light and heavy objects, climbing ladders, operating charged hose lines, distinguishing between shades of color, height and depth perception, prolonged periods of walking and standing and the use of equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The majority of the duties performed by a wildland firefighter are outdoors. Experiencing elements of all four seasons is not uncommon. Depending upon where you are stationed, you may experience all four seasons within a few days. Most duties are related to prescribed burning, wildfire suppression, and fire preparedness. May be exposed to the danger of , fumes, noise and smoke.
