AUDIENCE, SCOPE, AND COURSE PURPOSE The primary audience is the new fire chief in volunteer or combination departments. The secondary audience includes new career fire chiefs in larger departments, department leaders who may become fire chiefs, and local government administrators and elected officials who are involved in the administration of a fire department. This 2-day course addresses critical knowledge and skills pertaining to the responsibilities of a fire chief; the nature of local politics and the fire chief's role in local politics; and liability and risk management issues and resources available to help the new fire chief meet his/her responsibilities. We must, as an organization, keep our foot on the pedal and continue to grow and develop our people and our organization. Our goal at the LaGrange Fire Department is to continuously exceed the expectations of the community and our stakeholders. In 2019 we reached three major milestones. We added a fifth fire station that will provide quicker response to the northwest quadrant of the city. We added a training center that meets all our training needs. We maintained our ISO classification of 2 during our last audit. To have these two additions to our department within a single year is exceptional and to maintain our ISO classification was monumental. Each of these milestones helps us provide a better service for the citizens of LaGrange.

The Department was able to complete some significant projects while still experiencing an ever-increasing demand for service. Thanks to prudent fiscal planning by the City, the Department was able to continue to provide its usual high levels of service to the community during the current economic downturn. In 2009, the Department’s response times were some of the fastest in the region.     2018 TOWN OF GREENFIELD APPOINTED FIRE CHIEF JOB SUMMARY Responsible for the day to day Fire and EMS operations of the Greenfield Fire Department. Performs supervisory and administrative work in planning, organizing, budgeting, staffing, managing, and directing all administrative and tactical operations of the department. Will have a good working knowledge of and exercise good judgment of best practices consistent with the policy and procedures of the Town of Greenfield and the Greenfield Fire Department. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works with considerable operational independence and personal judgment under the administrative direction of the Selectboard. Uses judgment and initiative in interpreting orders, rules, regulations, procedures, laws, and in meeting emergency situations. Work is reviewed by conferences and observation of effectiveness of work performed. Confers regularly with the Town Administrator and the Selectboard. Work is annually reviewed through observation of the effectiveness of work performed and conferences by the Town Administrator. Such assessments may be appealed to the Selectboard, the final authority in evaluations.     Fire and EMS Terminology If you have never set foot inside a fire or EMS department before, some of the lingo might be unfamiliar to you. To provide you with a little background, below are some commonly used terms and their definitions. Please note that some terminology may vary depending on the location. Apparatus – Vehicle used in transporting firefighters to the scene of an incident. Types of apparatus include aerial or ladder trucks, engines or pumpers, and brush trucks, among others. In some areas, it may also be referred to as a “rig.” Career, call, and volunteer – Career refers to individuals who make fire and emergency services their primary occupation. They have shifts at a station and are paid. Call refers to individuals who have a different, primary job and are paid only for incidents that they respond to. Volunteer refers to individuals who respond to incidents without pay. EMS – Emergency medical service. EMT – Emergency medical technician. Individuals who are specially trained and certified to provide basic emergency care and life support services before and during transport to a hospital or other care facility. Engine – This is an apparatus designed for fire attack and is equipped with a water tank, water pump, and firefighting hose. Also called pumpers. First responders – Individuals who, in the early stages of an incident, are responsible for the protection and preservation of life, property, evidence, and the environment. This general term includes firefighters and EMTs. Firefighters – Individuals who respond to fire incidents and, frequently, to other types of emergency calls such as medical emergencies and natural and man-made disasters.
