PRESS RELEASE CITY OF BENICIA City Manager’s Office 250 East L Street Benicia, California 94510 Contact: Josh Chadwick Acting Deputy Fire Chief (707) 746-4275 [email protected] Welcome Engine 12 in “Wet-Down, Push-In” Ceremony Thursday, August 31st – 9:30 a.m. Fire Station 11 – 150 Military West Benicia, CA (August 23, 2017) — The Benicia Fire Department welcomes Engine 12 to its service fleet in a traditional “wet-down, push-in” ceremony on Thursday, August 31st at 9:30 a.m. The community is invited to join firefighters, other City staff and the City Council in celebrating the arrival of this new piece of safety equipment. The new 2017 Seagrave Pumper fire engine, a state-of-the-art front line pumper, is replacing an existing engine, a 2008 Seagrave, at Fire Station 12. The 2008 engine will become a reserve engine in the department’s fleet. Industry standard for the life of a fire engine is 20 years, with 10 years as “first out” and 10 years in reserve status. “The purchase of this new engine is an investment in the City and its citizens’ safety in regards to fire response,” Acting Deputy Fire Chief Josh Chadwick stated. The 2017 Seagrave custom built pumper features a fully-enclosed stainless steel cab and a stainless-steel body that helps protect firefighters in any rollovers and other crashes. It is also equipped with 360 degree LED lighting “that turns night into day”, which is an important safety feature. It is equipped with a 500-horsepower engine, 1500 gallons per minute pump, a 500-gallon water tank. -

In August of 1979, the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) convened a “Women in the Fire Service” seminar in College Park, Maryland. This seminar brought together a group of fire service leaders and others to discuss the relatively new phenomenon of women -- perhaps 300 nationwide -- employed as firefighters. Today, women in firefighting positions have increased to approximately 3,000. As a result of the symposium, the USFA in 1980 published a document called The Role of Women in the Fire Service. The publication summarized the issues discussed at the seminar, presented the participants’ recommendations and personal insights into many aspects of women’s work in the fire service, and described existing initiatives and resources in the area. -

Nelson Vaughan, III Chatham Borough Council Members Dear Mayor and Council, The following is a report of activities of the Chatham Borough Fire Department for the calendar year 2010. During the year, the fire department responded to a total of three hundred and fourteen (314) incidents, which was an increase of eighty-seven (87) over last year. Fortunately in 2010, there were no significant fires which caused reportable fire loss. During the year however, there were twenty-nine (29) reported fires. This included four (4) building fires, nine (9) cooking related fires, three (3) furnace or boiler fires, four (4) chimney fires, five (5) brush or trash fires, and four (4) passenger vehicle fires. Actual loss was reported for only three (3) months during the year totaling only $8300. This was a very significant decrease of $155,900 over last year in which a loss of $164,200 was posted. The members of the Chatham Fire Department contributed a total of eight thousand seven hundred fifty-three (8753) man-hours of service to the community in 2010. Incident responses accounted for one thousand seven hundred eighteen and three quarters (1718 ¾) man-hours while the remaining seven thousand thirty-four and one quarter (7034 ¼) man-hours were logged for training, work details, and fire duties to facilitate the many programs sponsored by the department throughout the year. This year was a very active year, with an increase of one thousand four hundred and six and three quarters (1406 ¾) man hours compared to the total logged for 2009. -

COSUMNES FIRE DEPARTMENT HISTORY The rich history of the Cosumnes Community Services District (District) dates back 127 years to the establishment of three districts: the Elk Grove Fire Protection District (1893), the Galt Fire Protection District (1921), and the Elk Grove Recreation and Park District (1936), which combined in two phases. In 1985, the Elk Grove Fire Protection District and Recreation and Park District merged to form the Elk Grove Community Services District. The Galt Fire Protection District merged with the Elk Grove Community Services District in 2006 to form today’s District, which takes its name from the nearby Cosumnes River. The following is a chronological history of the Cosumnes Fire Department, with the Elk Grove and Galt’s Fire Department’s history listed prior to the merger. ELK GROVE FIRE DEPARTMENT 1892 – 2006 • After a series of fires destroyed all but two buildings on Main Street in 1892, a group of citizens who started the Elk Grove Water Company, constructed an 80-foot water tower on Elk Grove Boulevard. The tank held 45,000 gallons of water, and 3,500 feet of water main was laid east and west on Elk Grove Boulevard, and five fire hydrants were installed. The Elk Grove Water Company conceived the idea of forming a Fire Department. • In 1893 the Elk Grove Fire Department was founded with a single hose cart and a small group of dedicated volunteers. • In 1897 a hose cart shed, hose drying tower, and fire bell were installed to alert the volunteer firefighters, special ordered from San Francisco. It was erected in the hose-drying tower located east of the Southern Pacific Depot. -

Meet the Seattle Fire Boat Crew the Seattle Fire Department Has a Special Type of Fire Engine

This engine is a fire boat named Leschi. The Leschi fire boat does the same things a fire engine does, but on the water. The firefighters who work on the Leschi fire boat help people who are sick or hurt. They also put out fires and rescue people. There are four jobs for firefighters to do on the fire boat. The Pilot drives the boat. The Engineer makes sure the engines keep running. The Officer is in charge. Then there are the Deckhands. Engineer Chester says, “The deckhand is one of the hardest jobs on the fire boat”. The deckhands have to be able to do everyone’s job. Firefighter Anderson is a deckhand on the Leschi Fireboat. He even knows how to dive under water! Firefighter Anderson says, “We have a big job to do. We work together to get the job done.” The whole boat crew works together as a special team. The firefighters who work on the fire boat practice water safety all the time. They have special life jackets that look like bright red coats. Officer Hedrick says, “We wear life jackets any time we are on the boat”. The firefighters who work on the fire boat want kids to know that it is important to be safe around the water. Officer Hedrick says, “Kids should always wear their life jackets on boats.” Fishing for Safety The firefighters are using binoculars and scuba gear to find safe stuff under water. -

We had many accomplishments and should be proud of our growth. We took a department that was in a good place and made it extraordinary. We continue to be an example for other departments to follow. As I have said it’s easy to be great once but the real challenge is being great all the time. We must, as an organization, keep our foot on the pedal and continue to grow and develop our people and our organization. Our goal at the LaGrange Fire Department is to continuously exceed the expectations of the community and our stakeholders. In 2019 we reached three major milestones. We added a fifth fire station that will provide quicker response to the northwest quadrant of the city. We added a training center that meets all our training needs. We maintained our ISO classification of 2 during our last audit. To have these two additions to our department within a single year is exceptional and to maintain our ISO classification was monumental. Each of these milestones helps us provide a better service for the citizens of LaGrange. -

One only has to listen to a fire scanner and there will be at least one, if not two, area fire departments out on them. There even have been a couple mutual aid alarms from surrounding departments. What are they? They are spring time grass and field fires. Harlem-Roscoe Fire is well equipped though to join the fight. A mini-pumper type grass rig is located at each of the three fire stations. And, Station’s 1 & 3 also each house a 4- wheel drive grass rig. March 30, all five grass rigs were put in to use on a field fire at Kieselberg Park on Swanson Road.
