Course Information Description This course covers front and rear suspension systems, balance, and steering systems and components. Students will be required to perform a front and rear wheel alignment. 3 Cr (2 lect/pres, 1 lab, 0 other) Total Credits 3.00 Total Hours 64.00

Remove / inspect and replace leaf springs / insulators / shackles / mounts / bushings and brackets 3 Identify and interpret steering system concerns; determine necessary action Learning Objectives Lube suspension and steering systems Assess suspension and steering componets and operation Inspect manual or fluid level, condition, flush, fill and bleed system Describe power pump operation Test power steering pump / volume and pressure Diagnose power steering fluid leakage; determine necessary action Remove ,reinstall power steering pump, press fit pulley, reseal pump, check pulley/ alignment Remove , inspect, replace, and adjust power steering belts, hoses, and fittings Diagnose power steering (rack and ) binding, uneven turning effort, looseness, hard steering, and noise, determine necessary action. Diagnose power steering gear (non-rack and pinion) binding, turning effort, hard steering, looseness, and noise Adjust non rack and pinion worm bearing preload and sector lash Inspect and replace pitman arm, relay (centerlink/intermediate) rod, idler arm and mountings, and steering linkage damper. Inspect, replace, and adjust tie rod ends (sockets), tie rod sleeves, and clamps. Describe manual and power rack and pinion function Inspect rack and pinion / mounts / bushings and brackets Inspect and replace rack and pinion inner tie rods and boots Replace rack and pinion steering gear 4 Rotate / inspect / adj. pressure / reinstall and torque lug nuts Learning Objectives Inspect tire and wheel assembly for air loss, repair tire using internal patch Diagnose wheel/tire vibration, shimmy, and noise, perform tire/wheel balance, both static and dynamic Measure wheel / tire / and hub runout Inspect tire condition; identify tire wear patterns; check and adjust air pressure; determine necessary action. Rotate tires according to manufacturer's recommendations. Dismount, inspect, and remount tire on wheel equipped with tire pressure monitoring system sensor. Reinstall wheel; torque lug nuts. Inspect, diagnose, and calibrate tire pressure monitoring system. 5 Diagnose wheel bearing noise/vibration/ replace sealed wheel bearing Learning Objectives Inspect ,service or replace front or rear wheel bearings.

6 Service steering column components Learning Objectives Diagnose steering column noises / looseness and binding, determine necessary action Disable and enable supplemental restraint systems (SRS) Inspect and or replace , lock cylinder, column components, time SRS clock spring Service steering shaft universal joints, flex , and collapsible column, lock cylinder mechanism, and steering wheel; perform necessary action.

Common Course Outline - Page 2 of 3 Tuesday, September 25, 2012 9:19 AM 7 Identify steering geometrical angles Learning Objectives Perform prealignment inspection and measure/adjust ride height; perform necessary action Diagnose wandering, pulling, hard, bump,torque, memory, and steering return concerns Diagnose tire pull problem; determine necessary action Prepare vehicle for wheel alignment on the alignment ; perform four wheel alignment by checking and adjusting front and rear wheel caster, camber; and as required; center steering wheel. Check rear wheel thrust angle; determine necessary action. Check SAI and included angle/determine repairs Check front cradle (subframe) alignment; determine necessary action Explain damaged strut diagnosis Check toe-out-on-turns (turning radius); determine necessary action Check front wheel setback; determine necessary action
