Hansaji (Director- The Yoga Institute) An exemplary yogi and a scholar transforming millions of lives worldwide Dr. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra is currently the Director of The Yoga Institute, Mumbai, the world‟s oldest organised Yoga center. She is also the President of International Board of Yoga and Senior Vice President Indian Yoga Association (IYA). She is the leading face of householder Yoga and has conducted over 1,00,000 theoretical and practical sessions of Yoga till date. Her significant contributions in areas like Yoga education, research, experiential learning, standardisation of Yoga practices have been widely recognized. About Smt. Hansaji Born on 8 October 1947 to Yogic Jain parents Shri. Jitendra Phulchand Patni and Shrimati Tara Patni of Indore, Hansaji‟s life is an epitome of Yoga. Smt Hansaji right from her childhood days exhibited extraordinary inclination towards Yoga. Early childhood days were spent in quiet meditative contemplation and reciting verses from Shrimad Bhagavad Gita that astounded her friends and family. A strong foundation based on Gandhian principles shaped her beliefs. She was a science graduate. Then she when on to complete her Yoga teacher training course at The Yoga Institute as well as her law degree from the Government Law College, Mumbai. When she married Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra (President of The Yoga Institute,) it was a turning point in Hansaji‟s life. She brought about key revolutionary changes in the Institute. Her emphasis on spreading Yoga education especially for women led to the expansion of the Ladies Wing, more special classes for women, Pregnancy, Ante-natal and Postnatal camps, and the Menopause Women‟s Camp. She learnt and taught yoga at a time when women were not considered a part of the Yoga fraternity. She is well-known for her oratory skills and is quite popular amongst the national and international Yoga fraternity. Her capacity to engage the audience using real life incidences to convey Yoga Philosophy is remarkable. She gives her talks in English, Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati. Smt.Hansaji- ―First Lady of Yoga‖ made the nation proud by being the only lady yoga guru to share the stage alongside-Honourable Prime Minister of India-Shri Narendra Modiji at the ‗First International Yoga Day‘ (21 June 2015-New Delhi) She has inspired millions of people around the globe who wish to inculcate the yoga way of life! Under her astute guidance, The Yoga Institute (TYI) became the first AYUSH certified yoga teacher training school in India. Also she was former Chairperson of THE YOGA CERTIFICATION COMMITTEE-AYUSH Recognising and honouring the philanthropic work done under Dr. Hansaji Yogendra‟s guidance, The Yoga Institute won the prestigious PM‘s award for spreading the yoga goodness in June 2018. Smt. Hansaji‘s invaluable contribution to the Central Government Smt. Hansaji is a charismatic leader who played a pivotal role in making key changes in the Central Government‘s policies to further the cause of Yoga awareness and spread the message of holistic health and peace through Yoga for the wellbeing of humanity. NCERT (NATIONAL COUNCIL OF EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH AND TRAINING) – In 1989 Smt. Hansaji was the committee member alongside Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra and helped design the syllabus for schools that was implemented throughout the country. SMT HANSAJI chaired advisory board committee for 3 consecutive years viz- 2015, 2016 and 2017 to give her expertise to celebrate the International Day of Yoga worldwide. Former Member of Steering as well as the Technical Committee for Quality Council of India (AYUSH) - Smt. Hansaji‟s invaluable contribution led to standardisation of Yoga practices as well yoga education protocol throughout the country. Former Chairperson of the yoga certification committee of Quality Council of India (AYUSH) - Smt. Hansaji was elected as the Chairperson for the certification Committee of „Quality Council of India, Government of India‟. Smt. Hansaji was Co-chairperson of the 3 Technical Sessions during the International conference on „Yoga for Body and Beyond‟ at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on 22nd and 23rd June, 2016 to celebrate the International Day of Yoga by the Ministry of AYUSH. Ministry of AYUSH – Smt. Hansaji is a member of the Academic Committee of Yoga and Naturopathy. Smt. Hansaji has worked towards strengthening of educational systems of yoga & naturopathy. Ministry of AYUSH - Smt. Hansaji is a member of the Academic Committee of Yoga and Ayurveda. Smt. Hansaji has worked towards strengthening of yoga educational systems of ayurveda division and expediting the enforcement of quality control. Appointed as „Special Executive Officer‘ by the ‗Government of Maharashtra‘, on 20 June 2011. MORARJI DESAI NATIONAL INSTITUTE of YOGA (MDNIY) Non-official member of the Governing Body and the General Body of „Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, New Delhi.‟ (MDNIY) Research The Yoga Institute conducted a special one month intensive residential research programme for training State Government school teachers, with a view to introducing Yoga in schools. Memorandum of Basic Guidelines drafted by the teachers of Classic Yoga and approved by The Yoga Institute, signed also by some enlightened members of the public was presented to the All India Seminar of Yoga, Science and Man, sponsored by the Ministry of Health Government of India, held in March 1975. Study done on students of seventh and eight standards in a girls` school – Sarvodaya Balika Vidyalaya. It was found that when standardized courses of Yoga education are incorporated in school programmes, beneficial results do follow. A scientific study of Asanas and the Locomotor System by Dr. L.N. Kurulkar, radiologist and Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra. Journal of the Yoga Institute. “Yoga and Nose” research report by Dr. P.B. Rajput and Hansaji on the effects of Yoga for allaying common nasal problems with case reports. Journal of the Yoga Institute, (December 1984) Substantial research work has been conducted by Smt. Hansaji on the treatment of Asthma, Diabetes, Orthopaedic disorders and Heart Diseases; the results of which have been published in the books. They are quite popular. Smt. Hansaji‘s research project on „Stress Management though Yoga for Mothers of Children Appearing for Competitive Exams‟ was well received and the results were published in JAPI. Research project How to By-pass the By-pass was conducted at The Yoga Institute and findings were published in “Yoga Daily Planner for Heart Care” had been released in four languages (English, Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati.) It reveals the findings of scientific study on 200 participants at cardiac camps. It is a practical guide on how to prevent heart ailments and for rehabilitating cardiac patients. (1990) A benchmark research project of „Caring Heart‟ was conducted at The Yoga Institute; where patients underwent intensive Yoga Lifestyle Training for a year. Study group and control group study was unique feature to this project. Results were a great success. On evaluation regression of coronary artery disease was discovered. The results were published in JAPI (Journal of Association of Physicians of India) in April 2004, and in the book How to Reverse Heart Disease The Yogic Way- Research, Facts and Programme. Findings were very well received worldwide. Yoga training classes started in Mahindra and Mahindra, Automotive Division, Kandivali Plant in April 1992. The training consisted of 15 days, one hour per day, conducted after working hours. Training included research on the impact of cure and prevention of illness, development of concentration and memory, stress management and better coping with stress. Yoga For Back and Joint Disorders (1995-1999) A Research Project conducted by Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra, Hansaji J. Yogendra and Dr. P. Mamtora. The results were published in the book Yoga For Back and Joint Disorders in three languages (English, Hindi and Gujarati.) BMC Research: (2007) Yoga way of Life and Bhavas (attitudes) as the basis of an experiment in teaching Yoga to BMC school children; To evaluate the changes in the anxiety, self-concept and self-control levels of adolescents through the efficacy of Yoga education. The key concepts of the Bhavas were the same throughout the syllabus from Standard 1 to 12. The results were published in the special research issue of Yoga & Total Health in 2012. Significant Contributions Celebrated charismatic presenter of the popular television series ‘Yoga for Better Living‘, first aired in 1980 on DD (National Channel) It was judged all time popular series of the time. This program was also christened by IIT Professors as one of the most Scientific and Logical TV Series. As a Yoga Expert she was the consultant as well as the presenter for the „Yoga Sutra‟ section programme aired on ZEE TV. The show was aired across the globe in 162 countries. Smt. Hansaji‟s varied articles on Yoga and education regularly appear in various newspapers (The Times of India, Maharashtra Time, Indian Express etc.), Journals (Journal of Association of Physicians of India etc) and Magazines (Yoga and Total Health, YogaSattva, Chitralekha etc) to name a few.
