The world over, the pandemic is affecting health, lifestyle and economy. However, we are striving to bring you reliable, timely updates from The Yoga Institute. It is common for people to feel overwhelmed and anxious when there is so much update on the Corona virus and its adverse impact on our physical and mental state as well as on our nances. COVID-19 is absolutely the biggest global threat of our time. However, it is not the only news. The Yoga Institute has been sharing ways to cope up with the predicament by debunking myths, updating facts, spreading awareness, and also hosting live Yoga sessions. Make the most of this time to travel inward and discover the blissful world within by following Yoga way of living. Keep practicing Yoga to stay sane and safe. Remembering Dr. Jayadeva on his 91st Birth Anniversary, with profound respect and deep love, we want to share this true yogi’s take on fear and faith. Dr Jayadeva, in one of his talks stated, “ We lack the inner calm, certainty and condence because we don’t believe in such an element that provides this condence and certainty. Right from childhood, we are conditioned to see uncertainty in every situation. If there is faith, fear disappears. Faith, that whatever happens anywhere, God will be there to take care of it. “ With that faith, we respect and abide by the 21-days lockdown, the most conscious decision for the welfare of India. The Yoga Institute has always been at the forefront to help society during testing times. To express our gratitude to all the unsung heroes like BMC staffers, police ofcers, health care professionals, and other essential workers, we are providing them with free sattvic meals. So with deep conviction, we continue to do our duty and take every step we can to keep safe. Together, we look forward to continuing our journey with you all through this health crisis, and on the other side of it, when India prevails. Stay home, stay healthy, and stay in touch. He would even remind me to wear ornaments and be as ‘normal’ as I could. When I had the additional responsibilities of giving interviews and shooting with TV channels, I wasn’t able to manage my household chores along with that. That’s when Dr. Sahab stepped in and took up some of the household work to help me through it. I then convinced him to get the assistance of a maid. He only had one condition, that she would train under me so that she would understand the responsibilities correctly. He was Smt. Hansaji J. Director, The Yoga Institute. 5 YOGASATTVA FROM THE TEACHER’S DIARY MINDFULNESS GUIDELINES FROM THE BUDDHA A few lines from the nal discourse To the orange and yellow robed bhikkhus For the last meeting with their venerable Buddha.... Ananda, the chief disciple, says... The evening sun, bright and orange Multitude of bhikkhus in their orange and yellow robes Sitting in quiet repose in their asana... Waiting for their Lord and master... Buddha, also called the Sakhya Muni, To start his evening discourse.... Seven long years it took my beloved master, says Ananda. To master the art of supreme mindfulness Ananda recounts this nal sharing of the Venerable Buddha.... And this evening he was going to share with his beloved ....and the Lord Buddha, with yellow and orange coloured bhikkhus photons Thronged under the ery orange shafts of light Floating around his Noble Head... Filtering through the leaves of trees Mindfully, he places his sandals neatly on the steps As mindfully, they listened to his every word...says Ananda. Mindfully, he removes his shawl, folds it... Arranges his robes mindfully.. .... And mindfully sits in Padmasana. And Buddha said ...beloved bhikkhus, start watching the breath .... For nine counts initially Watch the breath, coming in and going out, There’s a hushed silence, bhikkhus watching Like a watchman who sees people coming in and going out. Their beloved master, sitting mindfully... Just watch the breath, the short breath, the long breath, Then he closes his eyes and mindfully watches his breath... mindfully The inow of air soft. Prolonged. Until the breath itself seems to stop and the mind seems to And the outow long and prolonged too. dissolve. Soon he will be in Samadhi...the samadhi of mindfulness, says Ananda. ... Anapanasati, explained by Ananda, Who had mastered the art with the venerable Buddha, continues To explain, the art of mindfulness... .....and my venerable master, mastered the art of mindfulness Over a long period of disciplined meditation on mindfulness Watching the inow and outow of breath At the tip of his nose, until, his breath-and-mind fused...In Samadhi. With the help of Iyengar yoga, she feels she was better equipped to deal with the 28 years of chronic pain that eventually led her to a Total AnKle Replacement in 2013. Ruth says: “My attraction to yoga started at a young age when I spotted one of those ‘pocKet booKs’ sold at the grocery store checKout lines. At the time, the booK cost maybe 25 cents and the photo on the front was a woman standing on her head. I convinced my mother to buy it for me and that is what started my yoga practice. It was the greatest gift she gave me, just as it is said that the inverted poses are the greatest gift to humanity.” In addition to her travels to India to study with the Iyengar family, she continues her studies with Colleen Gallagher, Mary Reilly and Manouso Manos.

4NCE Whenever we see Dr. Jayadeva, we are reminded of Patanjali's Yoga Sutra: "When one becomes disinterested even in Omniscience One attains perpetual discriminative enlightenment from which ensues the concentration known as Dharmamegha (Virtue Pouring Cloud)". - Yoga Sutra 4.29 He represents a mind free of negativity and totally virtuous. Whoever comes in contact with him will only be blessed. The Master, Dr Jayadeva, was teaching in the Yoga Teachers Training class at The Yoga Institute. After the simple but inspiring talk, as usual he said. IIAnyquestions?" After many questions about spirituality and Yoga, one young student asked, "Doctor Sahab how did you reach such a high state of development?" In his simple self-effacing way he did not say anything. Theyoung enthusiast persisted, 'Please tell us.II He just said, "Adisciplined mind." Here was the definition of Yoga of Patanjali, "roqa Chitta Vritti Nirodha" Restraining the modifications of the mind is Yoga. Naturally the next sutra also followed "Tada Drashtu Svarupe Avasthanam". "So that the spirit is established in its own true nature." Recently, there was a function to observe the 93fd Foundation Day of The Yoga Institute which was founded by Dr. Jayadeva's father, Shri Yogendraji - the Householder Yogi and known as "the Father of Modern Yoga Renaissance". At the end of very "learned" inspiring presentations, the compere requested Dr.Jayadeva." a man of few words" to speak. A SURVEY OF YOUTH YOGA CURRICULUMS A Dissertation Submitted to The Temple University Graduate Board in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY By Robin A. Lowry August, 2011 Examining Committee Members: Ricky Swalm, Advisory Chair, Kinesiology Michael Sachs, Kinesiology Catherine Schifter, Education Jay Segal, Public Health ii © Copyright By Robin A. Lowry 2011 All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT A SURVEY OF YOUTH YOGA CURRICULUMS By Robin A. Lowry Doctor of Philosophy Temple University, 2011 Doctoral Advisory Committee Chair: Ricky Swalm, Ph. D. Introduction: Yoga is increasingly recommended for the K-12 population as a health intervention, a Physical Education activity, and for fun. What constitutes Yoga however, what is taught, and how it is taught, is variable. The purpose of this study was to survey Youth Yoga curriculums to identify content, teaching strategies, and assessments; dimensions of wellness addressed; whether national Health and Physical Education (HPE) standards were met; strategies to manage implementation fidelity; and shared constructs between Yoga and educational psychology. Methods: A descriptive qualitative design included a preliminary survey (n = 206) and interview (n = 1), questionnaires for curriculum developers (n = 9) and teachers (n = 5), interviews of developers and teachers (n = 3), lesson observations (n= 3), and a review of curriculum manuals. Results: Yoga content was adapted from elements associated with the Yoga Sutras but mostly from modern texts, interpretations, and personal experiences. Curriculums were not consistently mapped, nor elements defined. Non-Yoga content included games, music, and storytelling, which were used to teach Yoga postures and improve concentration, balance, and meta-cognitive skills.

JOURNAL OF THE YOGA INSTITUTE FIRST ISSUED IN 1933 VOL LXI NO.6 PAGES 32 I EMAG YOGA AND TOTAL HEALTH JANUARY 2017 A TRIBUTE TO LIFE AND WELL BEING 98YEARS OF YOGA 01 We lead our life but are we thinking about life itself, the purpose of life? Who am I? Why am I here in this universe? What are my duties? Many questions, but unfortunately our attention does not go that way - we are too busy with our day to day work. Every single practice in yoga points to that direction. When we sit in Sukhasana, the mind can get quiet. In a quiet mood, some clarity can occur, some thinking can happen. These are opportunities during the day when we get such a chance. We have to consider whether we are utilizing such opportunities. We are too busy with our day to day work, we do not have any time to ourselves - this has been going on all our life and it will remain. But in the midst of all this, isn’t it our duty also to understand a little more about life? Or should we just keep carrying on like animals - eat, drink and be merry? This is something that can be considered. Great people, who were respected, were able to think a little more, think a little deeper and improve their life. They were able to help others also as a result. We can do that, but we never think on these things. We just think on continuously earning, eating and enjoying. On 16th Feb 2018, Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra surrendered to this union of individual energy and universal energy. Fondly known as Dr Sahab, he had mastered the art of self control. It isn’t a wonder that his father and Founder of The Yoga Institute, Shri Yogendraji once said of Dr. Jayadeva, “He is a true Yogi. He never gets angry.” Dr. Jayadeva always said, real Yoga is balance of Chitta/Mind in any circumstances. An exemplary yogi, he lived up to this saying verbatim until his last breath. A simple man and a true Yogi, Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra was born in 1929.

Shri Yogendraji believed that yoga was not meant exclusively for bearded men living in the mountains, and he wanted to bring it to householders—the men and women who have to work, toil, commute, earn a living, raise children, and fight the battle of life everyday. He wanted to bring it to people living in the town and the city, because he believed that the householder could benefit immensely from this knowledge. Little surprise then that Shri Yogendra is known as the Father of Modern Yoga Renaissance.
