He has spearheaded an unprecedented worldwide movement for a stress-free, violence-free society. Gurudev has developed unique, impactful programs that empower, equip and transform individuals to tackle challenges at global, national, community and individual levels.

Member Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev ji Sadhguru is a man whose passion spills into everything he encounters. A fearless rebel from the start, his childhood was punctuated with solitary forays into the jungle for days at a stretch, snake-catching and class cutting. In youth, his blunt clarity into life made him an unofficial counsellor to his problem-ridden college mates. His love of adventure led him on motorcycle expeditions, and his early business endeavours into poultry farming and construction were met with success. Just when you’ve summed him up as a cool maverick, he surprises you with a gentle side that can shed tears of compassion and extract laughter from hardened faces. Equally at home with bright-eyed village children, ash-smeared yogis and top-notch executives, Sadhguru defies any narrow description. With a keen mind, balanced by a heart that knows no boundary, he infects his zest for life into all who seek to live their lives to the fullest.

Member Swami Chidananda Saraswati H.H. Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji’s motto in life is, “In the Service of God and humanity.” and austerities high in the Himalayas. Pujya Swamiji is President and Spiritual Head of Parmarth Niketan Ashram, Rishikesh, India, one of the largest interfaith, spiritual institutions in India. Pujya Swamiji has also increased several-fold the humanitarian activities undertaken by Parmarth Niketan (www.parmarth. org). Now, the ashram is not only a spiritual haven for those who visit, but it also provides education, training, and health care to those in need.

1412 Yoga Sudha Governing Council

Member Sri O P Tiwari ji Sri Om Prakash Tiwari was born in North India in 1933. As the direct student and disciple of the late and founder of Kaivalyadhama Institute in Lonavala, India, he is one of the few remaining Hatha Yoga Masters in the world. Swami Kuvalayananda gave him the responsibility of managing the Nature Cure Hospital at Kavailyadhama, and later in 1966, he was entrusted with the entire institute, serving as Secretary General, overseeing areas of education and administration. Although he wants no worldly recognition, he is one of only a few authentic and true Masters alive today.

Member Swami Bharat Bhusan An eye capturing and heart touching handsome young boy of 18 years with fair complexion, strong muscular built, always cheerful & glowing face and deep bright eyes, abundant energy, self-confidence, leadership skill, wonderful art of oratory with offers of film industry, class one jobs in police, army and in private sector and other worldly attractions all around but… clear vision. This young boy was touched with the paining heart, self-confidence, courage to accept and stand for truth, revolutionary life, selfless service and truth pricked words of Swami Dayanand Saraswati and Swami Vivekanand, Kabir and Nanak Dev. Their lives made him to decide to stay above and make the best use of his life by leaving all such attractions aside and serve the humanity as a servant of Divine. At so early an age he became a popular teacher among young generation always surrounded by youth. Youth felt proud to come in his association and found a beam of light in the clouds of confusions and darkness. The name of this young Bharat Bhushan became synonym of ‘Guru ji’ as youth from all classes and faiths were at his home or around him where ever he went for solution of their problems, quarries and curiosity. It was his life style that attracted the youth from being spoiled and understands the meaning of true health, strength, beauty, religion, social service, patriotism and importance of coexistence and spiritualism. His home became a popular visiting centre for Hindus, Muslims, Christians and all other faiths. May it be Diwali, Eid, Xmas day, Independence Day, Republic Day or the incarnation days of Nanak Dev, Kabir, Raidas or Balmiki or sacrifice days of our great martyrs, his home was always crowded with people of different faiths who were there to celebrate these occasions with social, patriotic, spiritual color. His home became the only place where people enjoyed the literary & cultural activities, social and national discussions along with spiritual living with liberty to continue their religious faiths, where youth of different faiths did never hesitate in celebrating holy Yajan, Holi, Eid, Diwali, and Xmas day all together.

June 2018 1513 Governing Council

Life of Gurudev Bharat Bhushan ji, is a living example of the high tradition of great souls traveling this planet whenever humanity is in great need of such revolutionary seers to spark and flash light of true knowledge to prevailing darkness of ignorance and sorrows in society. Guruji is the symbol of perfection in all spheres of life whether it be academic education, sports, co-curricular activities, moral values, literature, speech, poetry, music, relationships, journalism, social work, spirituality, Ayurveda and bodybuilding as he is the only vegetarian Mr. India as well. But the aim of his life was pretty clear from the very beginning. He is a mentor who has changed the lives of many others. He is just like Paras that converts everything in gold which comes in contact with him. The only ‘Padma Shri’ recipient in the field of Yoga in 1991 by the then Shri R. Venkatraman and the explorer of the Indian spiritual in more than 60 countries Yoga Guru Padma Shri Bharat Bhushan behaves just like an ordinary man when he caresses his cow, when he waters the plants of his ashram and when he shares his wonderful moments of life with his students and is always surrounded by youth around him.

Yoga is about clearing away whatever is in us that prevents our living in the most full and whole way. With yoga, we become aware of how and where we are restricted - in body, mind, and heart - and how gradually to open and release these blockages. As these blockages are cleared, our energy is freed. We start to feel more harmonious, more at one with ourselves. Our lives begin to flow - or we begin to flow more in our lives. Cybele Tomlinson

Section A - An Improved Case of Neurology

Can yoga mitigate the scourge of dreadful cancer? Astonishingly, the answer is a resounding ‘yes’, judging by the response to treatment given to a cancer patient at Arogyadhama. Sceptical professionals in the established allopathic system may ridicule this but the very patient, who got tremendous relief after taking the treatment, will testify to the efficacy of the yoga system of treatment.

Mr. Manohar (name changed), a 42-year-old professor, came to our Arogyadhama with complaints of recurrent lower back pain since 2010. The pain kept increasing despite taking painkillers. In November 2012, he was diagnosed with cancer. The CT guided biopsy of the spine at NIMHANS showed a lesion with secondary metastatic carcinoma. Despite all investigations the primary source of cancer could not be traced and he was administered six cycles of chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy, but his PET scan actually showed an increase in the metastasis to 25% after the last cycle.

By now the patient had lost weight, appetite became poor, stricken by severe constipation, developed hyperpigmentation of skin, had hair fall all over, felt terribly weak and could not walk without support. It was at this stage he came to our Arogyadhama and put on pranayama practice 3 to 4 times a day and Om meditation. He was given a cleansing diet with fruit juices, wheat grass juice and daily enema. He gradually gained weight and started doing gentle along with cyclic meditation (CM) and mind sound resonance technique (MSRT) regularly. He also started doing pranic energisation technique (PET) daily. Ayurvedic herbal preparations and antioxidants were added to his routine.

Improved Parameters:

With this treatment Mr Manohar was doing well even after 12 months of the declaration that he would survive 3 to 4 months only. Muscle strength in his legs had improved and he could walk a few steps daily. His hair grew again, skin texture became normal, there was no pain in leg and spine and his bowel functions were normal. His haemoglobin levels improved from 7 to 12 gm% and he gained around 8 to10 kg in weight. However, he continued to intermittently have mild pain in spine. His MRI scan also showed no further progression of lesions.

Section E - An Improved Case of Back Pain

A radiating low back pain since several years, varicose veins since 6 to 7 months, overweight since the past few months and left knee pain for six years. All these had caused the 37-year-old Sarika (name changed) considerable distress and a lot of stress.

The participant came to Prashanti, Arogyadhama, in Sept 2015. Her low back pain radiated to the right leg. The pain, which was a gradual onset, had aggravated recently. She developed varicose veins during her third pregnancy. Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins near the surface of the skin. They are most common in the legs and ankles. They usually aren't serious. These veins contain one-way valves to ensure that the blood flows towards the heart. Failure of these valves allows blood to flow backwards and causes varicose veins to develop. In the case of Sarika, these became painful since 2 to 3 years and were associated with swelling on prolonged standing. In addition, she has been overweight since 5 to 6 months and this aggravated her left knee pain.

During her two-week stay at Arogyadhama, she underwent various yoga practices based on Integrated Approach to Yoga Therapy which comprised a special yoga module designed specifically to relax, strengthen and make the person more flexible at the body and mind level to achieve total wellbeing. Also, Pranayama, Cyclic Meditation, Mind Sound Resonance Technique and relaxation techniques were included in the schedule. Lectures on lifestyle and dietary habits were organised to ensure better lifestyle for overall health. She specifically learnt certain techniques designed to

2422 Yoga Sudha immediately alleviate her back and neck pain and, over a period of time, altogether rid her of these pains. She was trained in some breathing practices such as sukshmavyayama and certain Yogāsanas which were specifically designed to facilitate relaxation.

Along with this, she underwent Ayurveda, naturopathy, and physiotherapy treatment. Counselling sessions were arranged to calm her disturbed emotions and control her stress levels. There were biweekly cleansing procedures called kriyas to cleanse her system completely.

Her schedule used to start at 5:30 am with pranayama and meditation followed by various activities that continued till 7:30 pm. These activities included special techniques (asanas, loosening exercises and relaxation techniques) designed to reduce pain. In order to enhance her relaxation and calmness special meditation techniques were administered (cyclic meditation, trataka and mind sound resonance technique). Koshas that proved to be of considerable help to her were Annamaya Kosha, Pranamaya Kosha and Manomaya Kosha. Her parameters were monitored on a daily basis to keep a record of her progress.

Condition on Discharge: The Participant is relaxed and better after her stay in Arogyadhama. There has been a consistent improvement in all her vital and clinical parameters. Improvement in Brahmari time and straight leg raising have been positively recorded. Details of assessments before and after yoga therapy are as under

The world has suddenly come to the profound g realization that we are destroying nature; the Prof. T M Srinivasan idea that we should be custodians of nature Professor, Division of Yoga and Physical Sciences, S-VYASA is permeating sciences and even Western philosophy. We are not the masters of nature who can ruthlessly destroy nature in the name of progress. Some Western intellectuals and philosophers have started to question the notion that earth has unlimited resources, Dr. Henryk Skolimowski from Poland being a prominent one. He was concerned regarding the great paradox of the Western world: in the process of developing and acquiring technology at an ever- increasing pace, we downgrade and marginalize culture. As we all well know, the initial objective of Yoga is to set the mind in proper order. In this, the first two angas, yama and niyama gives us a profound attitude change that impacts not only us, but every single entity around us including nature. In the opening verse of Bhumi Suktam, it is said that many actions of humans sustain this earth. They are: (adhering to) profound truth, unchanging honesty, piety, dedication, capability arising from honesty and yagña or gratifying Gods (and nature that is so bountiful to us) through proper rituals.
