JAYADEVA YOGENDRA 22-23 EDITOR’S NOTE Namaste, e are constantly expressing our love to our family, friends and of course many other loved ones, but have we ever articulated Wlove to our self? Well, we can't truly love someone else until we love ourself. These days, ‘Self-Love’ is a very popular term that gets tossed around in normal conversations. But yoga way of living connects it with our true self on a deeper level because yoga is an internal journey of self-discovery. It is also important to cultivate love for self due to its association to the yogic principle Ahimsa (non-violence), which is the first Yama of the Ashtanga Yoga. To practice Self-love is to practice ahimsa toward self and to respect self too. Through regular, mindful yoga practice, we connect with our inner Self. In the process, we are also practicing love and devotion to the Divine. Only when we are self accepting and self loving, then we can nurture other relationships too with love. Last year, on 16th Feb, The Yoga Institute and the entire yoga fraternity bid adieu to beloved Dr. Saab. A true yogi, Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra propagated Yoga as a way to encourage conscious evolution. He will continue to enlighten our paths with his great teachings forever. He always believed that the show must go on and what better way to continue by paving way for the arrival of his grandson Saatvik Yogendra within minutes of his last breath. As we pay respect to Dr. Saab on 16th Feb 2019, his 1st death anniversary, we celebrate life by showering blessings to the youngest Yogendra family member, Saatvik, on his 1st birthday. Let us take this opportunity to implement the profound teachings of this great scholar and visionary by understanding the Game of Limitations. A horse racing accident in 1985 left her with numerous broKen bones in her leg, anKle and foot. With the help of Iyengar yoga, she feels she was better equipped to deal with the 28 years of chronic pain that eventually led her to a Total AnKle Replacement in 2013. Ruth says: “My attraction to yoga started at a young age when I spotted one of those ‘pocKet booKs’ sold at the grocery store checKout lines. At the time, the booK cost maybe 25 cents and the photo on the front was a woman standing on her head. I convinced my mother to buy it for me and that is what started my yoga practice. It was the greatest gift she gave me, just as it is said that the inverted poses are the greatest gift to humanity.” In addition to her travels to India to study with the Iyengar family, she continues her studies with Colleen Gallagher, Mary Reilly and Manouso Manos.

A SURVEY OF YOUTH YOGA CURRICULUMS A Dissertation Submitted to The Temple University Graduate Board in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY By Robin A. Lowry August, 2011 Examining Committee Members: Ricky Swalm, Advisory Chair, Kinesiology Michael Sachs, Kinesiology Catherine Schifter, Education Jay Segal, Public Health ii © Copyright By Robin A. Lowry 2011 All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT A SURVEY OF YOUTH YOGA CURRICULUMS By Robin A. Lowry Doctor of Philosophy Temple University, 2011 Doctoral Advisory Committee Chair: Ricky Swalm, Ph. D. Introduction: Yoga is increasingly recommended for the K-12 population as a health intervention, a Physical Education activity, and for fun. What constitutes Yoga however, what is taught, and how it is taught, is variable. The purpose of this study was to survey Youth Yoga curriculums to identify content, teaching strategies, and assessments; dimensions of wellness addressed; whether national Health and Physical Education (HPE) standards were met; strategies to manage implementation fidelity; and shared constructs between Yoga and educational psychology. Methods: A descriptive qualitative design included a preliminary survey (n = 206) and interview (n = 1), questionnaires for curriculum developers (n = 9) and teachers (n = 5), interviews of developers and teachers (n = 3), lesson observations (n= 3), and a review of curriculum manuals. Results: Yoga content was adapted from elements associated with the Yoga Sutras but mostly from modern texts, interpretations, and personal experiences. Curriculums were not consistently mapped, nor elements defined. Non-Yoga content included games, music, and storytelling, which were used to teach Yoga postures and improve concentration, balance, and meta-cognitive skills.

The formal techniques that are now known as Yoga are, therefore, based on the collective experiences of many individuals over many thousands of years. The particular manner in which the techniques are taught and practiced today depends on the approach passed down in the line of teachers supporting the individual practitioner. Yoga is essentially a spiritual discipline based on an extremely subtle science, which focuses on establishing harmony between mind, body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature and a holistic approach to health and well- being. Yoga is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with ourselves, the world and Nature. It is an art and science for healthy living.
