Iyengar Ruth Ann Bradley is an Intermediate Junior II Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher. She is the founder and owner of the Yoga Institute of Broward in Cooper City, Florida, established in 1998. (www.yogabroward.com) Ruth falls in the ranKs of countless others that have turned to Iyengar yoga to find relief and healing after a life-changing event. A horse racing accident in 1985 left her with numerous broKen bones in her leg, anKle and foot. With the help of Iyengar yoga, she feels she was better equipped to deal with the 28 years of chronic pain that eventually led her to a Total AnKle Replacement in 2013. Ruth says: “My attraction to yoga started at a young age when I spotted one of those ‘pocKet booKs’ sold at the grocery store checKout lines. At the time, the booK cost maybe 25 cents and the photo on the front was a woman standing on her head. I convinced my mother to buy it for me and that is what started my yoga practice. 3. HINDUISM Chapter Overview According to the time line at the back of this book, Hinduism is the oldest global religion. Pre- cursors of this Vedic faith may include some aspects of the Dravidians, advanced cultures of the Indus Valley, and the Harappans. A hotly contested scholarly reconstruction concludes that those called Aryans who were nomadic invaders from outside India eventually overran these highly organized cultures. Others though maintain that this religion is not foreign-born. Indian religion and philosophy have influenced many other religions and cultures. The country could be considered the birthplace of Eastern thought and practice. By pointing out to students that Hinduism provides ample opportunity to begin comparing and contrasting Eastern and Western forms of religious ways, they may better appreciate why it is the first global religion presented in the book. Indian religion combines the material and the spiritual in creative ways. There is something for everyone -- from the advocate of a strictly trained body to the quite philosophical thinker. Excellent work from an excellent student!!- Editor REPORTS ON YAMAS AND NIYAMAS YAMAS: BRAHAMACHARYA Laura Biagi Generally translated as “restrain of sexuality”, this Yama – while involving the awareness and control of sexual energy – is not limited to sexuality as we understand it in the West. In Yoga 1 to 10, Dr. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani writes that Brahmacharya is “the continuous residence in the principle of creativity”. The first step to take in this analysis and understanding is the relationship between the principle of creativity and the principle of sexual energy. Yamas are tools to control our animal nature and to progress in our human evolution. Let’s look at the evolutionary steps we took from being animals to being humans in relation to our sexuality. Animals use their sexual energy to pro- create . The procreative instinct is very strong in animals. It is vital ( vital comes from the Latin vita , life). Animals spend quite some time and energy mating, coupling, procreating, making a new nest, taking care of the young and so on. Animals have quite different habits in the way they use their sexual energy, too. As humans, we are still carrying with us some of the instincts and emotions of animals: most of us have probably felt one time or another a sexual attraction or repulsion, a sexual arousal, attachment to a mate, fear or loosing the mate, desire to find a mate, jealousy, passion, and so on. -

Community Empowerment in Conservation Work of Angkor Complex Keiko Miura, who is engaged in fieldwork in Cambodia, has been working or involved in Siem Reap for more than six years. She contributed this article on the efforts of the local and foreign community in the area of conservation Thibaud Lepage National and international framework of conservation of Angkor Following the two decades of war and instability, and prior to the UN-sponsored national elections in Cambodia of May, 1993, Angkor was inscribed on the World Heritage List in December, 1992, when it was also declared a World Heritage Site in Danger for the proba- tionary period of three years. This was the culmination of years of preparatory efforts made by the Cambodian authorities and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). Then, the World Heritage Committee (WHC) made an exceptional decision to temporarily lift normally required inscription conditions pertaining to national mechanisms for site protection.1 Further development concerning the conservation of Angkor heritage site was made through the Tokyo Declaration of October 1993, which led to the establishment of the International Co-ordinating Committee for the Safeguarding and Development of the Historic Site of Angkor or ICC. Japan and France co-chair ICC, with UNESCO in charge of its secretariat. Ever since, the international conservation work in Angkor has been co-ordinated, and a framework to examine on-going projects and new ones has been established.2 Meanwhile, the legal framework for the conservation of the Angkor heritage site has been established by the Government of Cambodia, in co-operation with UNESCO and other international organisations. -
