With not only a new year but also a new decade upon us, we need to make sure to set attainable goals for ourselves for a happy, healthy and balanced 2020. Yoga can surely help, having weathered many new decades successfully . What better way to start the new decade than by continuing our self-improvement, guided by our very own guru, Hansaji. She suggests “A Three-point Programme for the New You” that includes Focus, Vairagya and Tapa, helping us to master the demands of the new decade. This edition of Yogasattva also gives special attention to senior citizens and how they can practice yoga effectively in everyday life. In the winter months, skin care should not be neglected by anyone and we will be sharing some tips on that. After our celebrations at the end of the old year, stepping into the new one, Dr. Jayadeva reminds of of the “Need for Discipline” in his insightful article on the topic, cautioning us not to give in to chaos, violence and untruth. Finally, Shri Yogendraji sheds light on the “Changing Image of Yoga” that was as visible when he wrote the article as it is today with ever new permutations of ‘Yoga’ coming to the fore. Wishing you a joyous and prosperous 2020! Change should always be enthusiasm. This new decade inspires us to transform slow. Slowly reduce the quantity of food and then make a gentle Aourselves for the better. Three most important qualities shift to nutritious and home cooked food. Eventually, you will that you can develop are: Focus, Vairagya (detachment towards reach a stage where you will not have any likes or dislikes for results) and Tapa (working hard) . food. A strong personality needs to be developed that is beyond likes and dislikes. It is possible when you do Tapa (working Focus on knowing yourself thoroughly well, know your body hard). strength and limitations and most importantly, know your mind, its nature, thought processes when with others and when alone, You have to work hard and succeed in life. If you fall down, it is and also know your emotions. If the focus is self-growth then okay, get up again and start again. But do not push yourself very automatically, the attention will not go to others, what others are hard, understand the limitations of your body and respect them. doing, why they are doing it and what they should or should not In one of the cancer camps, I was telling the patients that if they do. reduce overthinking, then their body will heal because then the body will be in touch with the soul. A restless mind doesn’t allow All our sensory organs are open to the external world, hence our going closer to the soul. rst attention goes to the outside world. Somebody’s behavior, somebody’s thoughts, somebody’s action becomes our centre. To be successful in transforming, you will have to put an effort We have to deal with others, hence our mind weighs more and remain self- motivated. Your journey to reach this goal towards the outside world. We have to shift the mind from the should be creative and it is possible only if you know yourself external to the internal to achieve Vairagya or detachment well. from the material world. In Yoga there is a technique called Yoni Mudra where you close all the senses to go within. This should be practised for 5 to 10 minutes a day. Vairagya is a positive virtue, it helps you to do your duty well. If you keep your hand close to your heart, you won’t be able to see it properly. But if you keep it away from you, then you will be able to see it properly and if it has any problems, you can rectify it by doing your duty. Remember we should not change anybody; we have to accept everybody. Smt. Hansaji J. Yogendra Now to become a new you, identify the weaknesses and learn Director, The Yoga Institute. from it. Yoga is a set of discipline based on four basic factors that should be understood and followed in our daily life. 1. AHAR: Follow discipline in taking your food intake, eat 4 to 5 times a day but remember that food should be easily digestible and never overeat. No solid food intake after 8 pm. Do not eat when upset (angry) or not hungry. 2.VIHAR: Spend some time on a hobby of your choice. Do relaxation at least twice a day (SAVASANA). Spend some time Shri Manohar Bhatia remembering God and meditate on his name. 6 YOGASATTVA YOGA MD Care of the Skin I found a very useful book by Shri Yogendraji, Hatha Yoga Simplied. I have realized that Yoga is a holistic system of self- culture and it involves and encompasses many branches of science like neurology, anatomy, psychology, physiology. It aims at the development of health of body and mind and through its practice, can give a healthy life and longevity. The skin is the largest organ of the body. It also makes up 15% of the body weight. If this barrier were not there, what would happen? The internal organs, like the heart, the stomach, the lungs, the liver, the pancreas, etc.

Whoever comes in contact with him will only be blessed. The Master, Dr Jayadeva, was teaching in the Yoga Teachers Training class at The Yoga Institute. After the simple but inspiring talk, as usual he said. IIAnyquestions?" After many questions about spirituality and Yoga, one young student asked, "Doctor Sahab how did you reach such a high state of development?" In his simple self-effacing way he did not say anything. A SURVEY OF YOUTH YOGA CURRICULUMS A Dissertation Submitted to The Temple University Graduate Board in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY By Robin A. Lowry August, 2011 Examining Committee Members: Ricky Swalm, Advisory Chair, Kinesiology Michael Sachs, Kinesiology Catherine Schifter, Education Jay Segal, Public Health ii © Copyright By Robin A. Lowry 2011 All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT A SURVEY OF YOUTH YOGA CURRICULUMS By Robin A. Lowry Doctor of Philosophy Temple University, 2011 Doctoral Advisory Committee Chair: Ricky Swalm, Ph. D. Introduction: Yoga is increasingly recommended for the K-12 population as a health intervention, a Physical Education activity, and for fun. What constitutes Yoga however, what is taught, and how it is taught, is variable. The purpose of this study was to survey Youth Yoga curriculums to identify content, teaching strategies, and assessments; dimensions of wellness addressed; whether national Health and Physical Education (HPE) standards were met; strategies to manage implementation fidelity; and shared constructs between Yoga and educational psychology. Methods: A descriptive qualitative design included a preliminary survey (n = 206) and interview (n = 1), questionnaires for curriculum developers (n = 9) and teachers (n = 5), interviews of developers and teachers (n = 3), lesson observations (n= 3), and a review of curriculum manuals. Results: Yoga content was adapted from elements associated with the Yoga Sutras but mostly from modern texts, interpretations, and personal experiences. Curriculums were not consistently mapped, nor elements defined. Non-Yoga content included games, music, and storytelling, which were used to teach Yoga postures and improve concentration, balance, and meta-cognitive skills.

JOURNAL OF THE YOGA INSTITUTE FIRST ISSUED IN 1933 VOL LXI NO.6 PAGES 32 I EMAG YOGA AND TOTAL HEALTH JANUARY 2017 A TRIBUTE TO LIFE AND WELL BEING 98YEARS OF YOGA 01 We lead our life but are we thinking about life itself, the purpose of life? Who am I? Why am I here in this universe? What are my duties? Many questions, but unfortunately our attention does not go that way - we are too busy with our day to day work. Every single practice in yoga points to that direction. When we sit in Sukhasana, the mind can get quiet. In a quiet mood, some clarity can occur, some thinking can happen. These are opportunities during the day when we get such a chance. We have to consider whether we are utilizing such opportunities. We are too busy with our day to day work, we do not have any time to ourselves - this has been going on all our life and it will remain. But in the midst of all this, isn’t it our duty also to understand a little more about life? Or should we just keep carrying on like animals - eat, drink and be merry? This is something that can be considered. Great people, who were respected, were able to think a little more, think a little deeper and improve their life. They were able to help others also as a result. We can do that, but we never think on these things. We just think on continuously earning, eating and enjoying. It isn’t a wonder that his father and Founder of The Yoga Institute, Shri Yogendraji once said of Dr. Jayadeva, “He is a true Yogi. He never gets angry.” Dr. Jayadeva always said, real Yoga is balance of Chitta/Mind in any circumstances. An exemplary yogi, he lived up to this saying verbatim until his last breath.
