“The History of Hatha Yoga in America: the Americanization of Yoga” Book proposal By Ira Israel Although many American yoga teachers invoke the putative legitimacy of the legacy of yoga as a 5000 year old Indian practice, the core of the yoga in America – the “asanas,” or positions – is only around 600 years old. And yoga as a codified 90 minute ritual or sequence is at most only 120 years old. During the period of the Vedas 5000 years ago, yoga consisted of groups of men chanting to the gods around a fire. Thousands of years later during the period of the Upanishads, that ritual of generating heat (“tapas”) became internalized through concentrated breathing and contrary or bipolar positions e.g., reaching the torso upwards while grounding the lower body downwards. The History of Yoga in America is relatively brief yet very complex and in fact, I will argue that what has happened to yoga in America is tantamount to comparing Starbucks to French café life: I call it “The Americanization of Yoga.” For centuries America, the melting pot, has usurped sundry traditions from various cultures; however, there is something unique about the rise of the influence of yoga and Eastern philosophy in America that make it worth analyzing. There are a few main schools of hatha yoga that have evolved in America: Sivananda, Iyengar, Astanga, and later Bikram, Power, and Anusara (the Kundalini lineage will not be addressed in this book because so much has been written about it already). After practicing many of these different “styles” or schools of hatha yoga in New York, North Carolina, Florida, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Paris as well as in Thailand and Indonesia, I became so fascinated by the history and evolution of yoga that I went to the University of California at Santa Barbara to get a Master of Arts Degree in Hinduism and Buddhism which I completed in 1999. -

Whoever comes in contact with him will only be blessed. The Master, Dr Jayadeva, was teaching in the Yoga Teachers Training class at The Yoga Institute. After the simple but inspiring talk, as usual he said. IIAnyquestions?" After many questions about spirituality and Yoga, one young student asked, "Doctor Sahab how did you reach such a high state of development?" In his simple self-effacing way he did not say anything. Theyoung enthusiast persisted, 'Please tell us.II He just said, "Adisciplined mind." Here was the definition of Yoga of Patanjali, "roqa Chitta Vritti Nirodha" Restraining the modifications of the mind is Yoga. Naturally the next sutra also followed "Tada Drashtu Svarupe Avasthanam". "So that the spirit is established in its own true nature." Recently, there was a function to observe the 93fd Foundation Day of The Yoga Institute which was founded by Dr. Jayadeva's father, Shri Yogendraji - the Householder Yogi and known as "the Father of Modern Yoga Renaissance". Weekend Seven Choosing a Yoga Style Sherry Roberts Nearly all yoga styles are rooted in hatha yoga, yoga’s physical discipline that focuses on developing control of the body through asanas or poses. In Sanskrit, h a represents sun and t ha represents moon. Hatha represents the duality in life — yin and yang, masculine and feminine, darkness and light. It leads the way to balancing these opposing forces. It is the yoga of physical wellbeing. While all yoga styles seek to balance the body, mind, and spirit, they go about it in various ways. They may differ in how asanas are done and where they focus the attention (on mastering and holding the posture, on strict alignment, on breathing, on the flow of movement). Some will use props for the asanas; others will crank up the temperature in the room and go for the sweat. No style is better than another; it is simple a matter of personal preference. You'll get a good picture of what distinguishes a style, a bit about its history and philosophy, and what a typical practice entails (including detailed instructions and attractive photography of poses). -

His talent at capturing the mood of the gray winter months has made his work widely respected and popular. His photograph Oak Tree, Snowstorm printed on the title page of this thesis is an example of his work. Some people may look at the photo and be awed by the beauty and splendor of the gray shadows and snow. However, others may have a very different reaction. They may look at the photo and be reminded of the nightmare of depression, fatigue, lethargy, and hopelessness they feel each year during the winter months. These people may suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder and the intent of this thesis is to explore how yoga can help them. What is Seasonal Affective Disorder? Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a form of major depression that corresponds to seasonal changes during the year. People with SAD generally experience recurring depression beginning in late fall or early winter, which alternates with periods of a high or normal mood during the rest of the year. SAD is linked to the changing levels of light during the year. SAD is described as an “energy crisis” in which many physical and mental functions of the body are affected. Typical characteristics of SAD are: oversleeping or disturbed sleep, daytime fatigue, increased cravings for carbohydrates, weight gain, difficulty concentrating and processing information. -

A CHAIR BASED YOGA WORKSHOP FOR SELF-CARE AND STRESS MANAGEMENT FOR SOCIAL WORKERS AND MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS Abstract ABSTRACT This dissertation is a continuing education unit (CEU) course that teaches social workers and other mental health professionals how to cultivate resiliency and enhance self-care through the ancient practice of yoga. The course explores emerging research that reveals how yoga and other mindfulness-based practices can positively impact neurochemistry and brain biology. Most of the yoga positions and breathing exercises are practiced from a chair and can be adapted to any level of flexibility and fitness level. Designed to make yoga accessible for everyone, the techniques are gentle and available to individuals with various physical abilities, including participants who may be in a wheelchair. The program is experiential in nature but also includes power point slides and traditional classroom style instruction. -

Pain Management Center Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Program Home Practice Workbook: Awareness of Breathing Noticing the Physical Sensation of Breathing Locate where in your body you notice the physical sensation of breathing most prominently. That physical location will become the anchor point for your attention. Notice the sensations of the inhale, and then the exhale. Conscious Breathing Repeating silently to yourself: “Breathing in, I am aware I am breathing in. Breathing out, I am aware I am breathing out.” Counting the Breath Use silent labelling of the stages of the breath to help anchor attention. During the inhale, silently say “one.” During the exhale: “two.” During the next inhale: “three,” and so on, up to ten. Then return to one. If you lose your focus, return to one, without judging yourself! Candle Breathing Using the fingers of one hand as “five candles,” or perhaps just the index finger as “one candle,” imagine that you are systematically and gently blowing on the “flame,” but not so forcefully as to extinguish it.
