It is an intensive certificate course of 200 hours which prepares students for teaching yoga techniques to healthy adults. The course covers theoretical and practical aspects of ancient yoga, as well as experimental learning of unique techniques and concepts initiated by the founders of the Institute. II. THE YOGA INSTITUTE ThE Yoga InstitutE, Santacruz (East), Mumbai, India was founded in 1918 by Shri Yogendraji, and is the oldest centre of yoga in the world. Shri Yogendraji believed that yoga was not meant exclusively for bearded men living in the mountains, and he wanted to bring it to householders—the men and women who have to work, toil, commute, earn a living, raise children, and fight the battle of life everyday. He wanted to bring it to people living in the town and the city, because he believed that the householder could benefit immensely from this knowledge. Little surprise then that Shri Yogendra is known as the Father of Modern Yoga Renaissance. Although most people wished to learn yoga only to address their physical problems, Shri Yogendra wanted the Yoga Institute to be more than a place that would help them cope with physical ailments; he wanted it to be a ‘Life School’ where one learnt to live. The Yoga Institute, with its simplicity, sincerity, and non-commercial outlook, reaches out to householders and attempts to help them lead happy, healthy, and balanced lives in a world that is constantly throwing up challenges. Spearheading the “Yoga for the Householder” movement in the world, the Institute interacts with over two thousand people everyday for training, health benefits and consultations. It also offers Yoga teacher-training courses, and brings out books on yoga therapy, asanas, pranayam, couples counseling, traditional scriptures, ethics for everyday life, and a variety of other subjects on yoga education. Shri Yogendraji’s son, Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra, who passed away recently, was a sincere and committed torch-bearer of the founder’s legacy. His spirit continues to guide us through Guru Smt. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra, well-known all over the world, and today Director of The Yoga Institute, whom also serves as president of The International Board of Yoga. III. FINCA ELEFANTE Finca Elefante is a mountain reserved for the spiritual legacy of meditation, yoga and classical culture of ancient India. Meditating along with the archetypal nobility of the elephant, we send love and joy to all living beings that inhabit this planet. In our centre in Costa Rica we work with some of the ancient techniQues and classical approach of yoga and meditation from The Yoga Institute. CLASSICAL MEDITATION The really deep moments in meditation are unpredictable, unique, unforgettable, always unrepeatable and, in general, indescribable. They are like a trip of self-discovery by unexplored internal lands, which is completed only when we have opened our eyes with perceptions “of the beyond” different from those who have never embarked on trips of this kind… They are like the episode of a ceremony that celebrates connecting to an inner source of inexhaustible energy. At Finca Elefante we learn meditating, being through silence that we nourish ourselves with wisdom. We work with one of the oldest meditation techniQues in India: anitya bhavana, which consists of sitting down to observe the own natural breathing as a means to cross from the noise of the mind to the deep silence of consciousness. During our practical sessions, long periods of immobile meditation are combined with breathing exercises and simple postures of ancient yoga, just as they did in the yogic communities and classical universities of India thousands of years ago. ANCIENT YOGA The yoga that we practice is simple, humanized and based on a meditative tendency according to the principles that gave rise to it in ancient India. Among its various action goals, the most basic is to strengthen the following four faculties of the mind (called bhavas) through simple postures and breathing exercises: I. Purpose of life (dharma bhava) II. Detachment (vairagya bhava) III. Self-knowledge (jnana bhava) IV. Self-suffiency (aishvarya bhava) Similarly, in approaching life in a holistic way, ancient yoga defines the following four fundamental pillars and their respective daily practices for achieving integral health: I. Healthy diet (ahar) II. Healthy recreation (vihar) III. Healthy routines (achar) IV. Healthy thoughts (vichar) CONSCIOUS NOURISHMENT Food seems to inspire in us not only hunger or satisfaction, but much more: love, patriotism, forgiveness, devotion; probably up to depression, anger, loneliness, nostalgia. The relationship we have with food goes beyond simply satisfying hunger or nourishing the body. It creates connections, makes friends, favors romanticism, and makes the child trust his mother… It connects us to others, it connects us to Nature. When food strengthens the body and the Earth, it nourishes; when it pollutes, it depletes. What happens, then, when this principle also applies to our relationships through food? What happens when it separates us from the rest of the community? What when we lose the point and become extremists? Can the rigidity of thought lead us to true health? And to all this, what then is food? What is its meaning in our lives? What to eat, when to eat, how to eat? Where should food come from: from nature or from the factory? Why is food essential? What is its role in our connection with the Earth and our body? Who should we listen to when we are hungry: the body or the recommended nutrient table? – to calories or to official information? Are we made to have a relationship with food? Who should answer these Questions: common sense, instinct, or the wisdom of the body? –or fear, information, or rumours? Let’s find the answers within us, each morning at sunrise, sitting next to the silent energy plunged into deep meditation. Let us learn, explore and understand our relationship with nature, silence and food, leading a healthy life that allows us to smile from the heart. Those of us who live here, as well as those who come to enjoy our meditation and yoga trainings and retreats, feed mostly with clean products grown at the farm, and prepared under totally vegan and gluten-free standards. This is how we make food a gift of love towards ourselves. IV. RESERVATION DETAILS FOR THIS TRAINING The Course will bE ConDuCtED in English. 4NCE Whenever we see Dr. Jayadeva, we are reminded of Patanjali's Yoga Sutra: "When one becomes disinterested even in Omniscience One attains perpetual discriminative enlightenment from which ensues the concentration known as Dharmamegha (Virtue Pouring Cloud)". - Yoga Sutra 4.29 He represents a mind free of negativity and totally virtuous. Whoever comes in contact with him will only be blessed. The Master, Dr Jayadeva, was teaching in the Yoga Teachers Training class at The Yoga Institute. After the simple but inspiring talk, as usual he said. IIAnyquestions?" After many questions about spirituality and Yoga, one young student asked, "Doctor Sahab how did you reach such a high state of development?" In his simple self-effacing way he did not say anything. Theyoung enthusiast persisted, 'Please tell us.II He just said, "Adisciplined mind." Here was the definition of Yoga of Patanjali, "roqa Chitta Vritti Nirodha" Restraining the modifications of the mind is Yoga. Naturally the next sutra also followed "Tada Drashtu Svarupe Avasthanam". "So that the spirit is established in its own true nature." Recently, there was a function to observe the 93fd Foundation Day of The Yoga Institute which was founded by Dr. Jayadeva's father, Shri Yogendraji - the Householder Yogi and known as "the Father of Modern Yoga Renaissance". At the end of very "learned" inspiring presentations, the compere requested Dr.Jayadeva." a man of few words" to speak. Lowry August, 2011 Examining Committee Members: Ricky Swalm, Advisory Chair, Kinesiology Michael Sachs, Kinesiology Catherine Schifter, Education Jay Segal, Public Health ii © Copyright By Robin A. Lowry 2011 All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT A SURVEY OF YOUTH YOGA CURRICULUMS By Robin A. Lowry Doctor of Philosophy Temple University, 2011 Doctoral Advisory Committee Chair: Ricky Swalm, Ph. D. Introduction: Yoga is increasingly recommended for the K-12 population as a health intervention, a Physical Education activity, and for fun. What constitutes Yoga however, what is taught, and how it is taught, is variable. The purpose of this study was to survey Youth Yoga curriculums to identify content, teaching strategies, and assessments; dimensions of wellness addressed; whether national Health and Physical Education (HPE) standards were met; strategies to manage implementation fidelity; and shared constructs between Yoga and educational psychology. Methods: A descriptive qualitative design included a preliminary survey (n = 206) and interview (n = 1), questionnaires for curriculum developers (n = 9) and teachers (n = 5), interviews of developers and teachers (n = 3), lesson observations (n= 3), and a review of curriculum manuals. Results: Yoga content was adapted from elements associated with the Yoga Sutras but mostly from modern texts, interpretations, and personal experiences. Curriculums were not consistently mapped, nor elements defined. Non-Yoga content included games, music, and storytelling, which were used to teach Yoga postures and improve concentration, balance, and meta-cognitive skills.

JOURNAL OF THE YOGA INSTITUTE FIRST ISSUED IN 1933 VOL LXI NO.6 PAGES 32 I EMAG YOGA AND TOTAL HEALTH JANUARY 2017 A TRIBUTE TO LIFE AND WELL BEING 98YEARS OF YOGA 01 We lead our life but are we thinking about life itself, the purpose of life? Who am I? Why am I here in this universe? What are my duties? Many questions, but unfortunately our attention does not go that way - we are too busy with our day to day work. Every single practice in yoga points to that direction. When we sit in Sukhasana, the mind can get quiet. In a quiet mood, some clarity can occur, some thinking can happen. These are opportunities during the day when we get such a chance. We have to consider whether we are utilizing such opportunities. We are too busy with our day to day work, we do not have any time to ourselves - this has been going on all our life and it will remain. But in the midst of all this, isn’t it our duty also to understand a little more about life? Or should we just keep carrying on like animals - eat, drink and be merry? This is something that can be considered. Great people, who were respected, were able to think a little more, think a little deeper and improve their life. They were able to help others also as a result. We can do that, but we never think on these things. We just think on continuously earning, eating and enjoying. It isn’t a wonder that his father and Founder of The Yoga Institute, Shri Yogendraji once said of Dr. Jayadeva, “He is a true Yogi. He never gets angry.” Dr. Jayadeva always said, real Yoga is balance of Chitta/Mind in any circumstances. An exemplary yogi, he lived up to this saying verbatim until his last breath. A simple man and a true Yogi, Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra was born in 1929.

Considered to be the “spiritual capital” with which India hoped to garner material and financial support from the West, yoga was originally presented by its Eastern disseminators as “an antidote to the stresses of modern, urban, industrial life” and “a way to reconnect with the spiritual world” without having to compromise the “productive capitalist base upon which Americans [stake] their futures.”1 Though exact practitioner statistics are hard to come by, it is clear that the popularity of yoga in the U.S.
