The 34th Annual Young Members’ Night

Thursday April 8th, 2021

ASM International is a materials science and engineering society where materials users converge to provide and foster information, networking, training, and professional development. The “Golden Triangle” chapter of ASM meets monthly and has a large and active professional, academic, and industrial membership. We are happy to host Young Members Night where students can meet and interact with members from industry.

Gathertown Info for Poster Session Event link: https://gather.town/i/ct8XbAvS Gathertown is an interactive virtual platform that allows participants to move around and interact via avatars. Avatars can navigate the event, move close to others to start a conversation or walk up to view posters. More information on how to navigate Gathertown can be found at the end of this document.

Zoom Info for Speaker Session/Helpline For the poster session attendees, this link will also be provided within Gathertown once speaker sessions are about to start. This link will also function as a helpline during the poster session: https://cmu.zoom.us/j/94995845653?pwd=cENOT3FaeFViSDk5L0hXN2cxVlM4Zz09 Meeting ID: 949 9584 5653 Passcode: YMN2021

Silas Petrie Navigating Legal Careers for Engineers

Silas is a Patent Engineer in Michael Best’s Intellectual Property practice group in Milwaukee, WI. He works with attorneys to prepare and prosecute patent applications in the U.S. and around the globe. He has experience working with a variety of mechanical and electrical technologies, including control systems, sensing devices, motor control devices, 3D printers, and information software, as well as materials science. Prior to joining the firm, Silas was an application engineer with Rockwell Automation. Silas was the winner of the of Wisconsin- Milwaukee’s Student Start-up Challenge and selected from a pool of 300+ applicants to develop his invention for a bicycle lock product and successfully launched a company to sell his product.

Ryan Cohn Instance Segmentation for Direct Measurement of Satellites in Metal Feedstock Powders for Additive Manufacturing

Ryan is a third year PhD candidate in Materials Science and Engineering Holm Group at Carnegie Mellon University. He hopes to help engineers eventually improve the quality, consistency, and cost efficiency of feedstock powders for additive manufacturing by providing different metrics to characterize powder samples by applying computer vision and machine learning.

Abstract: Satellites are known to affect the flowability and spreadability of metal powders used in powder bed fusion additive manufacturing. However, there are no current experimental techniques for directly measuring the satellite contents of these powders. Instance segmentation is a powerful technique for automated image analysis but has not been adopted by the materials science community. By generating individual segmentation masks for every object that is recognized in an image, this technique can be applied to measure the size distribution, morphology, and other features of interest in powder samples with great detail. In this study we show how instance segmentation applied to SEM images of metal powders can be used to directly measure satellites in these materials.

Welcome to Gather!

Gather is a wonderful new tool for getting to both explore and chat with other people. It is also a very new tool and has a few quirks. This document is to help you with the basics so you can discover and play on your own. Try it out here: https://gather.town/app/p4B9DUqB8NAazd3t/DemoConference What you need: • A desktop/laptop with a mic and camera. • A web browser (Chrome or Firefox recommended). • We strongly recommend using headphones to help prevent feedback. • That’s it! There’s nothing to install, no software to download.

How it works: • Gather is a video chat platform that has avatars move around a map. As you get close to other avatars, your videos will pop up and you will be able to chat. • Move around the space using the arrow keys. • When your avatar moves closer to an interactable object, it will glow yellow and there will be a notification that shows up saying ‘Press x to interact with -object-’. This can range from informational flyers, playable arcade games, integrated Zoom meetings, and more! • By moving your avatar around you can have spontaneous conversations with those around you. These can be either one-on-one or small groups depending on how many people are around your avatar.

Opens the settings menu:g • Change Name • Change Audio/Video Devices • Respawn button to return to start • Click for Mod Settings: Change room password, change mod message, toggle force mute whole space Not-So-Obvious Features: Here are some things you might find useful but aren't immediately obvious. • There is a messaging feature that allows you to message people in four ways: 1. individually by clicking on their name in the participant panel, 2. locally to the people you are video chatting with, 3. room chat (must be requested) with all the people in the current room you are in, 4. globally to all the people in your map. • There is a locate feature to find others by clicking their name in the participant panel. The participant panel is the bottom-mot option in your toolbar on the left. • Interaction distance is also sometimes altered by designated private spaces. This allows conversations to only include people inside that space. • Want to full screen someone else’s video? Just click on their video. • Talking to a group of people? Click the down arrows centered below the videos to shift into grid view.

Privacy Features: We have three ways for you to control who has access to your map: • You can add a password via the mod setting for a room • If you want to only allow certain people you can create an email whitelist here. • Domain whitelists allow the moderator to allow entry into the space for all those who share the same email domain (ex. [email protected]). For managing people who are already in the space we have the following options: • Any moderator has the ability to ban individuals during the event

Technical difficulties: • Refreshing the page will fix most things! • If that doesn’t work, try muting and unmuting your mic and camera in Gather. • Check if your browser permitted camera and mic access Additional troubleshooting at https://gather.town/video-issues
