concept of developing a knowledge-based society has never spread so rapidly. At the turn of the millennia, the very approach of research and innovation, as a premise for ensuring the quality of human existence gradually shifts to another reality space, becoming top reasoning, with its relevance focusing on philosophical categories that are more crucial to the present and future. The quintessence of civilization's concern has become the continuity of ensuring living conditions for generations, by trying to establish a friendly dialogue with the environment, using natural resources and energy as rationally as possible. The main effort in the future will aim at reducing the level of environmental pollution in anthropogenic activity, manifested by toxic compounds from industry, energy and transport, reducing the risk of threat to aquatic, terrestrial and air spaces manifested by spread of pathogens and antimicrobial resistance, while implementing increased rationality management, restoring and preserving biodiversity in nature reserves. Obviously, the compromise between these rigors and ensuring the increase of people's well-being and quality of life, associated with trends in the sudden increase in the use of natural resources is possible only by implementing the range of scientifically argued solutions and recommendations provided by academia. General challenges set out above, together with the specific features of economic, scientific and cultural development, geographical location and availability of natural resources and energy in the Republic of Moldova, serve as a cornerstone in developing and implementing state research and innovation policies, aligned with the paradigms and desideratum of institutions involved worldwide and promoted in the most ambitious way in the European space. Against this background, the support provided for the development by organizations of research and innovation areas in the country is part of the list of the most important priorities for decision makers. Research institutions, universities, the private sector and public associations with an innovative component are the entities that acts in service of the national interest through noble activity, which condition the present and future of the country. Conferința-omagiu „Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu: Patrie, Onoare şi Ştiinţă” THE RECEPTION ODYSSEY OF THE BESSARABIAN BRILLIANT WRITER B.P. HASDEU IN THE ROMANIAN CULTURAL AREA Natalia LUCHIANCIUC, senior lecturer, Marianna FUCIJI, senior lecturer, Cahul State University „B.P.Hasdeu”, Department of Languages and Literatures Abstract: Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu’s personality and literary works gave rise to divergent views - some criticized and challenged him either for certain attitudes to political or cultural events or for the works that completed his creation, but others appreciated him especially for the roads opening in his works, for vastness and encyclopaedism, or for his patriotic activism. Realizing a historical perspective on how the Hasdean creation was received in different periods of time, we can see that the interest in the study of the Hasdean creation began quite late in the interwar period, although the scientist's literary works were explored by many of his contemporaries. In this respect we will remark that Hasdeu’s post-mortem literary creation will be spread out by the famous scholars, philologists, and historians who have updated it, specifying it in the history of literature, science, and Romanian culture. Keywords: the Hasdean personality and creation, Hasdeu's literary achievement, patriotic activism, divergent views. At certain stages of the evolution of artistic consciousness, in some literature, some names of authors, some book titles, some characters, and criticism of divergence of opinion only justify the prestige of literary values or the failure of others. It is a legacy through which all the generations and 40 Conferința-omagiu „Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu: Patrie, Onoare şi Ştiinţă” literary promotions, regularity related to appearances, gestures, and mimics of the phenomenon pass, which also reveal the complexity and essence of the artistic metamorphoses.

EDITORIAL ALIONA GRATI NEVOIA RECITIRII LUI PAUL GOMA Institutul de Filologie al AŞM Abstract This issue is dedicated to Paul Goma, a remarkable personality of the Romanian culture, a writer well-known all over the world. On the 2nd of October, 2010, the writer, born in Bessarabia, the Mana village, Orhei, celebrates his 75th anniversary. At this moment, his work encompasses over forty books written in Romanian and translated in several international languages. They represent for us an incontestable moral landmark. Questions which are being answered by the authors in this issue concern the fact whether the writer deserves to be placed on an honoured place in the culture he enriched and whether his creation had criticisms of the same level as his talent. We consider it our moral duty, as Paul Goma’s conationals, to honour and respect our national personalities, especially those who were unjustly persecuted and exiled from their motherland. Keywords: celebrated, writer, dissident, exile, spiritual presence.

  • Anti-Semitism in Europe Before the Holocaust
This page intentionally left blank P1: FpQ CY257/Brustein-FM 0 52177308 3 July 1, 2003 5:15 Roots of Hate On the eve of the Holocaust, antipathy toward Europe’s Jews reached epidemic proportions. Jews fleeing Nazi Germany’s increasingly anti- Semitic measures encountered closed doors everywhere they turned. Why had enmity toward European Jewry reached such extreme heights? How did the levels of anti-Semitism in the 1930s compare to those of earlier decades? Did anti-Semitism vary in content and intensity across societies? For example, were Germans more anti-Semitic than their European neighbors, and, if so, why? How does anti-Semitism differ from other forms of religious, racial, and ethnic prejudice? In pursuit of answers to these questions, William I. Brustein offers the first truly systematic comparative and empirical examination of anti-Semitism in Europe before the Holocaust. Brustein proposes that European anti-Semitism flowed from religious, racial, economic, and po- litical roots, which became enflamed by economic distress, rising Jewish immigration, and socialist success. To support his arguments, Brustein draws upon a careful and extensive examination of the annual volumes of the American Jewish Year Book and more than forty years of newspaper reportage from Europe’s major dailies. The findings of this informative book offer a fresh perspective on the roots of society’s longest hatred. William I. Brustein is Professor of Sociology, Political Science, and His- tory and the director of the University Center for International Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. His previous books include The Logic of Evil (1996) and The Social Origins of Political Regionalism (1988).
