concept of developing a knowledge-based society has never spread so rapidly. At the turn of the millennia, the very approach of research and innovation, as a premise for ensuring the quality of human existence gradually shifts to another reality space, becoming top reasoning, with its relevance focusing on philosophical categories that are more crucial to the present and future. The quintessence of civilization's concern has become the continuity of ensuring living conditions for generations, by trying to establish a friendly dialogue with the environment, using natural resources and energy as rationally as possible. The main effort in the future will aim at reducing the level of environmental pollution in anthropogenic activity, manifested by toxic compounds from industry, energy and transport, reducing the risk of threat to aquatic, terrestrial and air spaces manifested by spread of pathogens and antimicrobial resistance, while implementing increased rationality management, restoring and preserving biodiversity in nature reserves. Obviously, the compromise between these rigors and ensuring the increase of people's well-being and quality of life, associated with trends in the sudden increase in the use of natural resources is possible only by implementing the range of scientifically argued solutions and recommendations provided by academia. General challenges set out above, together with the specific features of economic, scientific and cultural development, geographical location and availability of natural resources and energy in the Republic of Moldova, serve as a cornerstone in developing and implementing state research and innovation policies, aligned with the paradigms and desideratum of institutions involved worldwide and promoted in the most ambitious way in the European space. Against this background, the support provided for the development by organizations of research and innovation areas in the country is part of the list of the most important priorities for decision makers. Research institutions, universities, the private sector and public associations with an innovative component are the entities that acts in service of the national interest through noble activity, which condition the present and future of the country. PhD, Deputy General Director, National Agency for Research and Development 4 Public research and innovation infrastructure in the Republic of Moldova Chapter I – State higher education institutions 1.1 Moldova
