Romero IAR-CONICET/UNLP, Argentina FCAGLP, UNLP, 2018 Epistemology Episteme, as distinguished from techne, is etymologically derived from the Ancient Greek word ἐπιστήμη for knowledge or science, which comes from the verb ἐπίσταμαι, "to know". In Plato's terminology episteme means knowledge, as in "justified true belief", in contrast to doxa, common belief or opinion. The word epistemology, meaning the study of knowledge, is derived from episteme. Plato Epistemology is the general study of cognitive processes and their outcome: knowledge. Knowledge is the product of cognitive operations made by an inquiring subject. It is not a thing or a substance, but a series of brain changes in the knower. Knowledge is not independent of the knowing subject, although we often feign it is for practical reasons. Knowledge is different from belief: I can know a story, for instance, but do not believe it. Belief implies a psychological adherence to some propositions. It is possible to believe something without understanding it, so belief is not necessary associated with neither truth nor justification. Knowledge acquisition requires a modification of the brain of the knower. This can be done in different ways, hence there are different kinds of knowledge. (i) Sensory-motor knowledge: the result of learning from actions. (ii) Perceptual knowledge: the result of perceiving events, either internal or external to the subject. (iii) Conceptual or propositional knowledge: the result of ideation, conjecturing, testing, correcting. Notice that not all knowledge is beneficial: we can learn trivialities, falsehoods, or highly harmful habits The three kind of knowledge are interrelated: conceptual knowledge can improve motor skills and perception; perception is used to evaluate conjectures; motor skills can help to improve perception and build instruments such as books, that enhance the ability to learn. -

The Russian Revolution: a Wider Perspective
- THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION: A WIDER PERSPECTIVE PREFACE to the Source Collection on the Russian Revolution This is a collection of sources provided by members of the Euroclio network and curated by three members of the Historiana team. It Insert Source here: is not a comprehensive overview of the Russian Revolution. Its purpose is to provide some insights into how politicians, diplomats, senior military officers, other officials, revolutionaries, eye witnesses, bystanders, newspaper editors and journalists, ordinary people and even children perceived some of the key events in Russia from January 1917 through to December 1922. We hope that this transnational and multiperspective collection will widen students’ understanding of what happened in Russia in those critical years. The sources have been provided by history teachers and historians from 13 countries, including the Russian Federation, neighbouring states that in 1917 were part of the Russian Empire, states that were then allies or enemies of Russia and even states which were neutral non-combatants in 1917. To obtain these sources the contributors turned to their own national digital and physical archives. Where necessary, contributors summarised texts in English. HASDEU IN THE ROMANIAN CULTURAL AREA Natalia LUCHIANCIUC, senior lecturer, Marianna FUCIJI, senior lecturer, Cahul State University „B.P.Hasdeu”, Department of Languages and Literatures Abstract: Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu’s personality and literary works gave rise to divergent views - some criticized and challenged him either for certain attitudes to political or cultural events or for the works that completed his creation, but others appreciated him especially for the roads opening in his works, for vastness and encyclopaedism, or for his patriotic activism. Realizing a historical perspective on how the Hasdean creation was received in different periods of time, we can see that the interest in the study of the Hasdean creation began quite late in the interwar period, although the scientist's literary works were explored by many of his contemporaries. In this respect we will remark that Hasdeu’s post-mortem literary creation will be spread out by the famous scholars, philologists, and historians who have updated it, specifying it in the history of literature, science, and Romanian culture. Keywords: the Hasdean personality and creation, Hasdeu's literary achievement, patriotic activism, divergent views. At certain stages of the evolution of artistic consciousness, in some literature, some names of authors, some book titles, some characters, and criticism of divergence of opinion only justify the prestige of literary values or the failure of others. The Road to Afghanistan
Introduction Hundreds of books—memoirs, histories, fiction, poetry, chronicles of military units, and journalistic essays—have been written about the Soviet war in Afghanistan. If the topic has not yet been entirely exhausted, it certainly has been very well documented. But what led up to the invasion? How was the decision to bring troops into Afghanistan made? What was the basis for the decision? Who opposed the intervention and who had the final word? And what kind of mystical country is this that lures, with an almost maniacal insistence, the most powerful world states into its snares? In the nineteenth and early twentieth century it was the British, in the 1980s it was the Soviet Union, and now America and its allies continue the legacy. Impoverished and incredibly backward Afghanistan, strange as it may seem, is not just a normal country. Due to its strategically important location in the center of Asia, the mountainous country has long been in the sights of more than its immediate neighbors. But woe to anyone who arrives there with weapon in hand, hoping for an easy gain—the barefoot and illiterate Afghans consistently bury the hopes of the strange foreign soldiers who arrive along with battalions of tanks and strategic bombers. To understand Afghanistan is to see into your own future. To comprehend what happened there, what happens there continually, is to avoid great tragedy. One of the critical moments in the modern history of Afghanistan is the period from April 27, 1978, when the “April Revolution” took place in Kabul and the leftist People’s Democratic Party seized control of the country, until December 27, 1979, when Soviet special forces, obeying their “international duty,” eliminated the ruling leader and installed 1 another leader of the same party in his place. -
Brief History of German Anti-Semitism
Chapter 1 Writings on the Wall Chapter 1 A Concise History of German Anti-Semitism In 1942, in a suburb of Berlin known as Wannsee, Reinhard Heydrich (head of the infamous Nazi secret police, the Gestapo) finalized the Nazi commitment to the extermination of the Jews within the Third Reich’s sphere of influence (Gilbert 281). According to some historians, these announcements made at Wannsee were the culmination of step-by-step decisions that had brought about what Adolf Hitler meant when, in 1920, he announced the Nazi party’s position that “None but members of the Nation may be citizens of the State. None but those of German blood, whatever their creed, may be members of the Nation. No Jew, therefore, may be a member of the Nation” (qtd. in Gilbert 23). Both ancient and contemporary European and German anti-Semitic forces were about to collide in Wannsee. That collision tragically ignited one of history’s most devastating and most documented genocidal conflagrations—what today is commonly called the “Holocaust.” Some historians suggest the Holocaust was the result of the Nazi targeting of Jews as scapegoats by suggesting that world-Jewry collectively had had something to do with the “stab in the back” that brought the World War I German war effort and World War I itself to a turbulent end. Some researchers suggest European Jewry was singled out for “special treatment” because they, the Jews, were somehow responsible for the unexpectedly final battlefield- failures, the consequent enormous war reparation payments, the collapsing stock markets and the subsequent spiraling inflation that financially crippled the German nation.
