İnsan gücünün yetmediği işleri kolaylıkla yapabilmesi, ona karşı duyulan hayranlığın nedenidir. Aslında bu hayranlık makineye değil, insanın kendisine duyduğu hayranlıktır. Nihayetinde insan, kol gücüyle yerine getiremediği veya bilişsel kapasitesinin yetmediği işleri yine kendisinin ürettiği bir “makine” ile yerine getirebilmektedir. İster yontulmuş bir taş parçası ister gelişmiş bir bilgisayar olsun, makineler insanın önce doğaya karşı hayatta kalmasını, ardından onu keşfetmesini ve nihayetinde ona hükmetmesini sağlamıştır. Dolayısıyla insanın makinelere duyduğu hayranlık, biraz da kendini onda görmesindendir. Bu çalışmada Helenistik Dönem’de mekanik biliminin gelişimini felsefî-teorik temelleri itibariyle incelemeye çalıştık. Bu amaçla Antik Yunan filozoflarının zanaat (tekhnê) ile ilgili görüşlerini inceledik, doğa filozoflarının doğayı açıklamaya yönelik çabalarını ele aldık ve Helenistik dönem mühendislerinin mekanik bilimi (mêkhanikê) ve otomatik mekanizmalar (automata) üzerine yaptıkları çalışmaları araştırdık. Böylece Türkçe literatürde, Helenistik dönem mekanik araştırmaları için küçük de olsa bir katkı sağlamayı umuyoruz. Öncelikle bu çalışmayı yapmamı mümkün kıldığı için tez danışmanım, hocam ve üstâdım Prof. Dr. İhsan Fazlıoğlu’na teşekkür ederim. Bu çalışmada, Helenistik Dönem Yunan felsefesinde mekanik biliminin gelişimi hakkında temel bir soru ortaya atıldı: Felsefî bağlamda tekhnê kavramından fiziksel bir entite olarak automata’ya geçiş nasıl oldu? Platon ve Aristoteles, zanaat (tekhnê) ürünlerinin madde ve formun birleşimi olduklarını göstermişlerdir. Zanaat tümel olanın bilgisidir; zanaat erbâbı, faaliyetinin ne olduğunu ve ürettiği ürünün neden ve niçin üretildiğini bilen kişidir. Zanaatın nihaî ereği ürün olduğu için Aristoteles’e göre bu üretici (poetikos) bir bilimdir. Sokrates-öncesi filozoflar varlığın ilkesini doğal bir entitede arayarak, doğayı oluşturan elementlerin niteliksel ve niceliksel olarak tanınmasını sağlamışlardır. Pisagor, matematiksel orantı ve uyumun tüm varlığın ilkesi olduğunu belirterek tüm varolanlar için niceliksel olarak geçerli olan bir ilke öne sürmektedir. Atomcu gelenek, varlığın ilkesinin atomlar olduğunu söyleyerek doğanın mekanik bir nedensellik ile işlediğini iddia etmektedir. Arkhitas ve diğer Pisagorcu filozoflar, matematiksel ilkelerin fizikî nesnelere nasıl uygulanabileceğini göstermişlerdir. Aristoteles’e atfedilen Mekanik Problemler kitabı ile ilk kez günlük hayata ilişkin teknik problemler, kaldıraç ve daire ilkeleri ile açıklanmıştır. Helenistik dönemde Arşimet, Ktesibios, Philon ve Heron gibi mühendisler, matematiksel ilkeleri makine tasarımı ve imalatına uygulamışlar ve böylece mekanik bilimini sistematik bir hale getirmişlerdir. Bu çalışmaların ardından artık bir disipline dönüşen mekanik bilimi hem teknolojik ilerlemeyi sağlamış hem de doğa felsefesi araştırmalarını etkileyerek evrenin mekanik bir yapı olarak anlaşılmasını mümkün kılmıştır. In this study, a fundamental question about the development of the discipline of mechanics in Hellenistic Greek philosophy was put forth: What is the transition from the philosophical concept of technē to the physical entity of automata? Plato and Aristotle have shown that products of craft (technē) are the combination of matter and form. Craft is the knowledge of the universal and craftsman is the person who knows what the product is and why it has been produced. Craft is a producer (poeiticos) science according to Aristotle because its ultimate purpose is the product. Pre-Socratic philosophers have provided qualitative and quantitative recognition of the elements that made up the nature by seeking the first principle of existence in the natural entities. Pythagoras has suggested a quantitative principle that is valid for all existing ones by stating that mathematical proportion and harmony is the first principle of existence. Atomic tradition has claimed that the first principle of existence are atoms and they proposed nature is working with a mechanical causality. Archytas and other Pythagorean philosophers showed the way that how mathematical principles can be applied to physical objects. The book of Mechanical Problems attributed to Aristotle show forth how the technical problems related to daily life can be explained with principles of leverage and circle. Engineers such as Archimedes, Ctesibius, Philo and Hero in Hellenistic Era applied mathematical principles to machine design and manufacturing, thus they organized the mechanical science in a systematically way. In this respect the science of mechanics has not only improved technological development but also affected the natural sciences and made it possible to understand the universe as a mechanical structure. And, within the tradition of Latin poetry, the fourth century marks a turn towards writing that privileges the reader’s involvement in shaping the meaning of the text. Therefore, this dissertation addresses a set of problems related to the aesthetics of Late Antiquity, the reception of Classical Roman poetry, and the relation between author and reader. I begin with a chapter on contemporary methods of reading, in order to show the ways in which Late Antique authors draw attention to their own interpretations of authoritative texts and to their own creation of supplemental meaning. I show how such disparate authors as Jerome, Augustine, Servius, and Macrobius each privileges the work of secondary authorship. The second chapter considers the use of prefaces in Late Antique poetry. The imposition of paratextual borders dramatized the reader’s involvement in the text. In the third chapter, I apply Umberto Eco’s idea of the open text to the figural poetry of Optatianus Porphyrius, to the Psychomachia of Prudentius, and to the centos from Late Antiquity.

    Presocratic Philosophy First published Sat Mar 10, 2007 The Presocratics were 6th and 5th century BCE Greek thinkers who introduced a new way of thinking about the world and the place of human beings in it. They were recognized in antiquity as the first philosophers and scientists of the Western tradition. This article is a general introduction to the most important Presocratic philosophers and the main themes of Presocratic thought... The standard collection of texts for the Presocratics is that by H. Diels revised by W. Kranz (abbreviated as DK). In it, each thinker is assigned an identifying chapter number (e.g., Heraclitus is 22, Anaxagoras 59); then the reports from ancient authors about that thinker's life and thought are collected in a section of ―testimonies‖ (A) and numbered in order, while the passages the editors take to be direct quotations are collected and numbered in a section of ―fragments‖ (B). Alleged imitations in later authors are sometimes added in a section labeled C. Thus, each piece of text can be uniquely identified: DK 59B12.3 identifies line 3 of Anaxagoras fragment 12; DK 22A1 identifies testimonium 1 on Heraclitus. 1. Who Were the Presocratic Philosophers? Our understanding of the Presocratics is complicated by the incomplete nature of our evidence. Most of them wrote at least one ―book‖ (short pieces of prose writing, it seems, or, in some cases, poems of not great length), but no complete work survives. Instead, we are dependent on later philosophers, historians, and compilers of collections of ancient wisdom for disconnected quotations (fragments) and reports about their views (testimonia).

    Nachlass Adolf Dyroff (1866-1943) Inhaltsverzeichnis zum bisher unbearbeiteten Teil des Nachlasses Bearbeitet von Uwe Kriegel† und Jonas Abs Bonn 2016 1 Adolf Dyroff wurde 2.2.1866 in Damm bei Aschaffenburg geboren. Als Sohn des Bankdirek- tors Heinrich Dyroff studierte er an den Universitäten Würzburg, Bonn und Berlin klassische Altertumswissenschaft, Germanistik und Geschichte und wandte sich daneben philosophi- schen und kunstgeschichtlichen Studien zu. Er studierte bei M. Schanz, H. Usener. F. Bü- cheler, H. Schell und W. Dilthey. Besonders der Kontakt zu Dilthey veranlasste ihn, die Philo- sophie zum Mittelpunkt seiner Arbeit zu machen. 1892 wurde er in Würzburg mit der Ab- handlung „Geschichte des griechischen pronomen reflexivum“ promoviert. 1894-1899 war Adolf Dyroff Gymnasiallehrer in Würzburg. 1899 habilitierte er sich bei G. von Hertling in München mit seinen „Demokritstudien“. Bereits 1901 wurde er außerordentlicher Professor in Freiburg. 1903 folgte Dyroff dem Ruf der Universität Bonn auf den Lehrstuhl für katholische Philosophie. In Bonn wirkte er bis zu seiner Emeritierung 1934 und in den Jahren 1940-1941 als Lehrstuhlvertreter. 1925/26 bekleidete er das Amt des Rektors der Universität Bonn. Adolf Dyroff war mit Margot Lermann (1875-1962) verheiratet. Der später geschiedenen Ehe entstammten die Töchter Irene und Ellen-Marie (Ellen) sowie der Sohn Gunther, der 1916 als 19jähriger Kriegsfreiwilliger fiel. Adolf Dyroff starb am 3.7.1943 in München. Adolf Dyroff vertrat einen ganzheitlichen Wissenschaftsansatz.. Hervorzuheben sind seine Schriften zur Philosophie der Renaissance. „Der Ruhm, die Bedeutung der Renaissance-Phi- losophie voll erkannt zu haben, gebührt Adolf Dyroff“ (A. Dempf). PRESOCRATIC FRAGMENTS IN PERIPATETIC SOURCES AFTER ARISTOTLE n ancient philosophy the fragmentary text is a crucial element of Itransmission and scholarly discussion, and requires special attention for its complex relation to a lost concrete whole (i.e. the actual text on a physical carrier) and a presumed doctrinal whole (the set of ideas arranged into a theoretical construct).1 They are, so to speak, defined as much by the absence of text as they are by the presence of it. The three main points I will make are interconnected and especially relevant for the Presocratic material preserved in Peripatetic sources after Aristotle: firstly, I will ask what we mean by ‘fragment’ as a way of focusing briefly on the underlying metaphor of pieces broken off from a material object – a notion which I believe can sometimes be misleading; secondly, I will recall how the long- standing categories of Diels (‘testimonium’, ‘fragment’ and ‘imitation’, labelled A/B/C in Diels-Kranz) have become criticised as no longer ade- quate, where I will focus especially on the interpretation of testimonia as the more problematic category. Kurfess, Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh, 2012 The history of philosophy proper, claimed Hegel, began with the poem of the Presocratic Greek philosopher Parmenides. Today, that poem is extant only in fragmentary form, the various fragments surviving as quotations, translations or paraphrases in the works of better-preserved authors of antiquity. These range from Plato, writing within a century after Parmenides’ death, to the sixth-century C.E. commentator Simplicius of Cilicia, the latest figure known to have had access to the complete poem. Since the Renaissance, students of Parmenides have relied on collections of fragments compiled by classical scholars, and since the turn of the twentieth century, Hermann Diels’ Die Fragmente der Vorsokratiker, through a number of editions, has remained the standard collection for Presocratic material generally and for the arrangement of Parmenides’ fragments in particular.

    Archimedes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archimedes Archimedes From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Archimedes of Syracuse (Greek: Ἀρχιμήδης; Archimedes of Syracuse c. 287 BC – c. 212 BC) was a Greek (Greek: Ἀρχιμήδης) mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer. Although few details of his life are known, he is regarded as one of the leading scientists in classical antiquity. Among his advances in physics are the foundations of hydrostatics, statics and an explanation of the principle of the lever. He is credited with designing innovative machines, including siege engines and the screw pump that bears his name.
