THE READER AND THE POET THE TRANSFORMATION OF LATIN POETRY IN THE FOURTH CENTURY A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Aaron David Pelttari August 2012 i © 2012 Aaron David Pelttari ii The Reader and the Poet: The Transformation of Latin Poetry in the Fourth Century Aaron Pelttari, Ph.D. Cornell University 2012 In Late Antiquity, the figure of the reader came to play a central role in mediating the presence of the text. And, within the tradition of Latin poetry, the fourth century marks a turn towards writing that privileges the reader’s involvement in shaping the meaning of the text. Therefore, this dissertation addresses a set of problems related to the aesthetics of Late Antiquity, the reception of Classical Roman poetry, and the relation between author and reader. I begin with a chapter on contemporary methods of reading, in order to show the ways in which Late Antique authors draw attention to their own interpretations of authoritative texts and to their own creation of supplemental meaning. I show how such disparate authors as Jerome, Augustine, Servius, and Macrobius each privileges the work of secondary authorship. The second chapter considers the use of prefaces in Late Antique poetry. The imposition of paratextual borders dramatized the reader’s involvement in the text. In the third chapter, I apply Umberto Eco’s idea of the open text to the figural poetry of Optatianus Porphyrius, to the Psychomachia of Prudentius, and to the centos from Late Antiquity. -

Archimedes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archimedes Archimedes From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Archimedes of Syracuse (Greek: Ἀρχιμήδης; Archimedes of Syracuse c. 287 BC – c. 212 BC) was a Greek (Greek: Ἀρχιμήδης) mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer. Although few details of his life are known, he is regarded as one of the leading scientists in classical antiquity. Among his advances in physics are the foundations of hydrostatics, statics and an explanation of the principle of the lever. He is credited with designing innovative machines, including siege engines and the screw pump that bears his name. Modern experiments have tested claims that Archimedes designed machines capable of lifting attacking ships out of the water and setting ships on fire using an array of mirrors.[1] Archimedes is generally considered to be the greatest mathematician of antiquity and one of Archimedes Thoughtful by Fetti (1620) the greatest of all time.[2][3] He used the Born method of exhaustion to calculate the area c. 287 BC Syracuse, Sicily under the arc of a parabola with the summation Magna Graecia of an infinite series, and gave a remarkably Died accurate approximation of pi.[4] He also c. 212 BC (aged around 75) Syracuse defined the spiral bearing his name, formulae for the volumes of surfaces of revolution and Residence Syracuse, Sicily an ingenious system for expressing very large Fields Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Astronomy, numbers. Introduction When ancient Greece is mentioned, people immediately think of its sculptures and temples, and - almost two inseparable words - Greek art. They will then mention the great philosophers and Athenian democracy, probably the Greek theater, and poetry perhaps. We also know that Greece shone in science. In mathematics, we still have memories of the theorems of Pythagoras or Thales, of Euclid's geometry, of the "Sieve of Eratosthenes" in arithmetics. And then of course in physics, Archimedes' principle. In astronomy, thinking of the names of the planets is enough to remind us of Greek culture. More than a thousand years ahead, the Greeks had discovered that the Earth was round, calculated its diameter and the distance from the Earth to the Moon. Het is dan aan de leerling zelf om een vak, een onderwerp en een onderzoek te kiezen. Dat vond ik nog niet zo makkelijk. Ik ben toen bij mezelf nagegaan: welk vak doe ik puur en alleen omdat ik het leuk vind en waar wil ik tachtig uur mee bezig zijn? Die vraag reduceerde mijn opties tot Grieks en nog enkele vakken. Ik bedacht me dat ik door een profielwerkstuk te maken over een Griekse wetenschapper wellicht een leuke combinatie kon maken van Grieks, een vak dat ik gewoon leuk vind, en een bètavak, een van mijn profielvakken, om er toch een profielwerkstuk van te maken. -

This project, the first of its kind, explores Eudocia's three poems as a unified whole and demonstrates how they exemplify the literary and cultural concerns of the fifth century. Since her poems are each apparently unique, I approach them first in isolation and tease out their social background, literary dependencies, and possible interpretive strategies for them before painting a broader picture of Eudocia's literary contribution. The first of her surviving poems is a seventeen line epigraphic poem from the bath complex at Hammat Gader, which acclaims the bath's furnace for its service to the structure's clients but, at the same time, illustrates the religious competition that surrounded late antique healing cults, of which therapeutic springs were part. Next is the Homeric cento, which borrows and reorders lines from the Iliad and Odyssey to retell parts of the biblical narrative. -

Europeana Learning Scenario Title: Tangram: an ancient educational material Author(s): Karagiannis Iraklis Summary: The LS explores tangram as educational material. Initially, students research mathematics textbooks and identify the thematic areas using tangram. They then research the Europeana Collections information on tangram, and particularly the ancient Greek mathematicians Pythagoras and Archimedes, who devised tangram, respectively. They then discover tangram’s relation to the proof of geometrical problems, such as Pythagorean Theorem. As a final activity, some students design and construct Pythagoras tangram, Archimedes “ostomachion” or tangram, while others create their own tangram inspired by the material from the Europeana Collections.
