Their continuous support over the past decade has strengthened our efforts to build capacity for the developing world. The main donors of BiGS-DR are: the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) via the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), the Robert Bosch Foundation and the Volkswagen Foundation. For a complete list of all donors please have a look at table 2, page 6 in this brochure.     JERUSALEM Illustrated History Atlas Martin Gilbert Preface In this Atlas, I trace the history of Jerusalem from biblical times to the present day. Each map is illustrated by a facing page of prints or photographs. The sixty-six maps, taken together, are intended to provide a broad survey of Jerusalem's history, with special emphasis on the City's development during the last hundred and fifty years, when it grew from a remote and impoverished provincial town of the Ottoman Empire, with a population of less than 40,000, to a capital city with a population of more than 360,000. In the bibliography, beginning on page 124, I have listed those maps, atlases, guide books, travellers' tales and historical works which I consulted while preparing the maps, and on which I drew for the contemporary material which they contained for each decade of the city's history. Sie umfaßt die Literatur von etwa 1800 bis 1940. Nach dem Tod von Hermann Degering 1942 und Alois Bömer 1944 lag diese Bibliographie als Ma- nuskript vor. Von 1955 bis 1990 wurde ihr Text von Rudolf Schetter, Johannes Bauermann, Helmut Müller und Bertram Haller bearbeitet, ergänzt und zum Druck gebracht. Eine Arbeit, für die von Bömer und Degering keinerlei Vorarbeit vorlag, war die Anfertigung eines alphabetischen Gesamtregisters. Dieses ist das Werk in erster Linie von Rudolf Schetter. Rudolf Schetter hatte bereits 1945 die Bearbeitung der Bibliographie und ihres Registers nach den damals gültigen Kriterien übernommen. Diese Kriterien entsprechen heute nicht mehr den modernen Anforderungen.

Diese Reaktionsspanne war auf den Ort der Gra- bung zurückzuführen: Mit dem Außenlager des Konzentrationslagers Buchenwald war erstmals in Deutschland ein Ort der nationalsozialistischen Ge- waltherrschaft untersucht worden. 2 Während Zeug- nisse des 20. Jahrhunderts bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt eher zufällig bei anderen Grabungen zutage traten 3 und deren archäologische Relevanz selten über die Klassifzierung als »Störung« hinausgingen, war die Anfrage der Stadt Witten an die LWL-Archäolo- Abb.
