Rudman Since the United States has become an ethnically and culturally diverse country and has become a microcosm of the world, multicultural children’s literature has attracted more and more attention and raised questions about its quality. The purpose of this study was to determine what images of Chinese people, Chinese-Americans, and Chinese culture were attributed in children’s and adolescents’ fiction. The study was achieved by examining 57 fictional books written by Chinese-American authors and other-American authors for readers from kindergarten through junior high school published in the United States from 1980 to 1997. VI This study was an example of the descriptive method of research using content analysis, a technique for evaluating the descriptions and information from the selected books in a systematic and objective manner, to achieve “systematic examination” by analyzing the information identified in the books under the study. The content of the books was analyzed to discover the ways Chinese people were portrayed and the ways Chinese cultures were represented, and to examine whether or not they were stereotyped. This study used two instruments, including a total of thirteen categories, to examine the images and representations from different perspectives. The results of the study indicated that the images of Chines people were attributed both realistically and in a stereotypic manner, and the representations of Chinese culture in many books were inaccurate and unauthentic. It was also found that most of the inaccurate information and misrepresentations were made by non- Chinese-American authors and illustrators, though a few inaccurate pieces of information were made by Chinese-American authors and illustrators. The present study may be helpful to authors, illustrators, book reviewers, curriculum specialists, and others working with written materials about China, Chinese and Chinese-Americans, and also to scholars of children’s literature who wish to analyze other cultures well. Directed toward the elimination of the stereotypes of Chinese and Chinese-Americans in Children’s and adolescents’ literature, the study promotes the realization of intercultural understanding, a necessary concomitant to the further development of cultural pluralism in this country. The conclusion is that the author-translator’s adoption of amplification and omission serves for the construction of asymmetrical power relationships, which has negative influence on cultural communication based upon equality between the west and the east. Index Terms—Eileen Chang, Chinese-English self-translation, amplification and omission, critical discourse analysis Eileen Chang was a legendary writer in Chinese literature history in 20th century but few people know that she is also an excellent translator. She has translated many English novels including Hemingway’s The Old man and The Sea and some of her own works. In recent years, the research on Eileen Chang is very hot whereas the research on her translation, especially on her self-translation is limited. It is easy for us to take for granted that it should be the most faithful that the author translates his/her own works.

Al-Zubaidi Executive Director Arab Society of English Language Studies Abstract Bahasa Melayu (Malaysian Language) like other languages has borrowed a number of words from other languages. This paper presents a study of Arabic borrowed words in Bahasa Melayu. It illustrates the main characteristics of the Arabic borrowed words: nouns of different types, adjectives, astrology, sciences, finance, trade, commerce, religious words and daily expressions. The researcher brought together ten categories of loan words (in three languages, Malay, Arabic and English). In conclusion, the researcher finds out that the main stream of Arabic borrowed words in Bahasa Melayu is due to the large influence of Islam. This study will provide the groundwork for further researches which will lead to enrich the linguistics and Islamic studies. Anwar Esmaiel Deeb Lecturer, Department of English, Faculty of Languages and Translation, October 6 University ABSTRACT: The practices or beliefs subsumed under the heading of ‘Superstition’ are often rejected in modern times as irrational thinking or laying beyond rational explanation. The use of the Superstition in Amy Tan’s work is generally well-known though not widely discussed. The purpose of the current paper is to discuss the development of this theme in the fiction works of the female Chinese-American writer emphasizing how irrational expressions can sometimes imply an underlying rational thought, especially in its relation to “Chinese American" identity. Tan concentrates on rationalizing the ghost or visions, even if they are not real. This irrational rational quality is presented by Amy Tan through her illustration of the language barriers and her use of oral storytelling tradition, in a structure of a frame (whole) narrative that comprises individual interrelated narratives. Therefore, this paper aims to approach this issue and deal with the concept of the Superstition, its use and application in three selected novels by Amy Tan: The Joy Luck Club (1989), The Hundred Secret Senses (1995), and The Bonesetter's Daughter (2001). Tan masterfully uses various forms and manifestations of the superstition. Each novel has certain elements that have considerable effect on those characters who practise them, either spiritually, psychologically or in making their decisions.

The purpose of this inquiry is to understand living the life of a resistor as a way of being. The six women of my research and myself, the seventh, are all from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. We are Muslim and Arabs. Being an Arab Muslim researcher of human science, I do not believe in an epistemology that claims one true "reality." Neither do I believe in a corresponding theory of truth. Any truth is always culturally and temporally contingent. In my worldview all human-made or human-reached truths and knowledge are perspectival. My research has been a journey of narrative inquiry. It has employed narrative to generate knowledge, telling a story as my way of spontaneously and authentically relating to others.

Now remarried, she settles in San Francisco, has a daughter, Jing-mei (June), and starts a Joy Luck Club similar to one in China with three other women. The four form strong friendships. As she grows up, Jing-mei and her mother struggle to understand one another. They never completely resolve their differences, and Suyuan dies unexpectedly. At the next meeting of the Joy Luck Club, her mother’s friends tell Jing-mei that Suyuan’s twin daughters have been found. They give her a check so she can visit them. As the novel ends, she meets her sisters in Shanghai. A second set of stories focuses on An-mei, who lives with her grandmother because her mother has been disowned. When An-mei is nine, her grandmother dies; and An-mei leaves with her mother to live in the home of a wealthy man and his other wives.

Yet the act of transplanting their texts into a new cultural, linguistic, and literary context has not been adequately addressed.

  • 21 South-East Asian Englishes
    21 South-East Asian Englishes The term ‘South-East Asia’ has considerable currency outside linguistics and has a broadly geographical reference, namely to countries which are at the south-east corner of the Asian mainland and to the many islands which are to be found in the area off this land-mass, bordered in the west by the Indian Ocean, in the south by Australia, in the east and north-east by the Pacific and in the north by the South China Sea. In essence, this encompasses the countries Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines. For the purposes of the present lin- guistic discussion, Hong Kong is taken as falling into the ambit of South-East Asia (Bolton 2000a), a practice which is sometimes reflected in linguistic treat- ments of English there (see Platt 1982), although it lies some distance north of the Philippines in the south of China. This allows one to treat the English language in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia (Nabahon 1983), the Philippines and Hong Kong together (but see McArthur 2002: 348–72 who treates Hong Kong English in a section on East Asia). For the current chapter the title ‘South-East Asian Englishes’ has been chosen deliberately. The plural is necessary for several reasons. The areas where these Englishes exist are not geographically contiguous (contrast this with South Asian English). The English-using countries of South-East Asia have typologically different background languages and different colonial pasts, mostly British, but in the case of the Philippines, American. Given this situation, English in the South-East Asian arena is at different stages of development and hence forms of Englishes are located at different points on a life-cycle (Bolton 2002a: 19; Llamzon 1986).
