Rcguha's Deep Ecology
R.C.Guha’s Deep Ecology The respected radical journalist Kirkpatrick sale recently celebrated “the passion of a new and growing movement that has become disenchanted with the environmental establishment. Decrying the narrowly economic goals of mainstream environmentalism, this new movement aims at nothing less than a philosophical and cultural revolution in human attitudes toward nature. Ramchandra Guha develop a critique of deep ecology from the perspective of a sympathetic outsider. Ramchandra Guha’s treatment of deep ecology is primarily historical and sociological, rather than philosophical, in nature. He makes two main arguments : first, that deep ecology is uniquely American. Second, that the social consequences of putting deep ecology into practice on a worldwide basis are very grave indeed. The defining characteristics of deep ecology are fourfold. First, deep ecology argues that the environmental movement must shift from an “anthropocentric” to a “bio-centric” perspective. The anthropocentric------ bio-centric distinction is accepted as axiomatic by deep ecologists, it structures their discourse, and much of the present discussions remains mired within it. The second characteristic of deep ecology is its focus on the preservation of unsploilt wilderness and the restoration of degraded areas to a more pristine condition – to the relative neglect of other issues on the environmental agenda. Historically, it represents a playing out of the preservationist and utilitarian dichotomy that has plagued American environmentalism since the turn of the century. Morally, it is an imperative that follows from the bio-centric perspective ; other species of plants and animals, and nature itself ,have an intrinsic right to exist. And finally, the preservation of wilderness also turns on a scientific argument – viz.; the value of biological diversity in stabilizing ecological regimes and in retaining a gene pool for future generations. -

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES Richard Van Buskirk, Chair; Deke Gundersen The Environmental Studies Department (www.pacificu.edu/as/enviro/) in the College of Arts and Sciences provides students with an education that takes full advantage of Pacific University's liberal arts curriculum. In this program, students and faculty have opportunities to pursue interests that span a wide range of disciplines. In addition to the two full-time faculty members in the department, Environmental Studies offers the expertise of faculty affiliated with the program who are based in the disciplines of biology, chemistry, political science, economics, history, art, sociology, anthropology, philosophy and literature. This results in a wide range of opportunities to investigate environmental problems that cross traditional boundaries. Students in Environmental Studies can choose to apply their knowledge through research opportunities in unique nearby surroundings such as the coniferous forest of the John Blodgett Arboretum, the riparian corridors of the Gales Creek and Tualatin River watersheds, and the 750-acre Fernhill Wetlands. The B Street Permaculture Project (a 15-minute walk from campus) is a learning laboratory for sustainability that directly addresses the human component of environmental problem solving. Regionally, there are many exemplary resources available within a one- to two-hour drive of campus such as the Willamette and Columbia Rivers, Tillamook and Willapa Bays, and the forests of the Coast and Cascade Ranges. The proximity of Pacific University to study sites both wild and human-influenced is one of the main strengths of the Environmental Studies program. The Environmental Studies curriculum includes majors that lead to a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree. -

Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara (Guan Yin) Renunciation Day Guan Yin Renunciation Day (观世音菩萨出家 日), the day she became a nun, falls on the 19th day of the 9th Lunar month 农历九月十 九 (19 Oct 2016). Thian Hock Keng celebrates this day with a Buddhist ritual. The temple has Lamps of Blessings for devotees to offer for one's good fortune and well-being. In the evening, Siong Leng Musical Association will put up Nanyin performances in the temple. Nanguan (南 管), also known as Nanyin, is a style of Chinese classical music originated in the southern Chinese province of Fujian. It is typically melodic and employs four basic scales. A Piece of History - The Original Guan Yin Statue in Thian Hock Keng The original Guan Yin statue in Thian Hock Keng was a wood carved statue covered in gold leaves. Academicians who researched on and published the book "Pearl of the South Seas" (南海 明珠) in 2010 deduced that the statue was brought in from Pu Tuo Shan ( 普 陀 山 ) Zhejiang, China by Venerable Guang Tong ( 广 通 大 师 ) in 1919 for a prayer ritual. The statute is now kept and was last displayed in 2012 during an exhibition organized in conjunction with the 7th World Fujian Convention. To read more about the statue, please click here. The conclusion is that the author-translator’s adoption of amplification and omission serves for the construction of asymmetrical power relationships, which has negative influence on cultural communication based upon equality between the west and the east. Index Terms—Eileen Chang, Chinese-English self-translation, amplification and omission, critical discourse analysis Eileen Chang was a legendary writer in Chinese literature history in 20th century but few people know that she is also an excellent translator. She has translated many English novels including Hemingway’s The Old man and The Sea and some of her own works. In recent years, the research on Eileen Chang is very hot whereas the research on her translation, especially on her self-translation is limited. It is easy for us to take for granted that it should be the most faithful that the author translates his/her own works. -

Covid-19 fears forces JB Chingay celebrations to be toned down Malaysiakini 12 February 2020 CORONAVIRUS | The annual Chingay parade in Johor Bharu regularly draws hundreds of thousands of revellers onto the streets. In light of the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak, however, the organisers said they will scale down the celebrations on Friday although the state government advised them to cancel the parade. “The government believes that if the disease spreads, it will not be able to maintain control of the situation. We respect the state government’s decision and cancel this activity […] “However, the procession of the deities is our tradition, so for this year, we will do the next best thing. “We have negotiated with the state government, so the five deities will be paraded on the back of trucks, while other things like the dragon and lion dances, parade floats are all cancelled. “I am very sorry. Everyone has worked hard to prepare for the parade, especially the floats. Millions have backed the floats, but it will not materialise,” Johor Baru Tiong Hua Association president Ho Sow Tong told a press conference today. Customarily, effigies representing the deities would have been loaded onto litters to be carried by a group of people during the parade. According to Bernama, last year, some 300,000 people had attended the parade. In a statement earlier today, the Johor government had urged the organisers to cancel the Chingay parade over concerns it would help spread the Covid-19 disease. Menteri Besar Sahruddin Jamal said the decision was based on the state Health Department’s risk assessment and its inability to conduct large-scale health screening of the parade’s visitors. -

Chinese Religion and the Challenge of Modernity in Malaysia and Singapore: Syncretism, Hybridisation and Transfi Guration1

Goh National University of Singapore Abstract Th e past fi fty years have seen continuing anthropological interest in the changes in religious beliefs and practices among the Chinese in Malaysia and Singapore under conditions of rapid modernisation. Anthropologists have used the syncretic model to explain these changes, arguing that practitioners of Chinese “folk” religion have adapted to urbanisation, capitalist growth, nation-state formation, and literacy to preserve their spiritualist worldview, but the religion has also experienced “rationalisation” in response to the challenge of modernity. Th is article proposes an alternative approach that questions the dichotomous imagination of spiritualist Chinese reli- gion and rationalist modernity assumed by the syncretic model. Using ethnographic, archival and secondary materials, I discuss two processes of change — the transfi guration of forms brought about by mediation in new cultural fl ows, and the hybridisation of meanings brought about by contact between diff erent cultural systems — in the cases of the Confucianist reform movement, spirit mediumship, Dejiao associations, state-sponsored Chingay parades, reform Taoism, and Charismatic Christianity. Th ese represent both changes internal to Chinese religion and those that extend beyond to reanimate modernity in Malaysia and Singapore. I argue that existential anxiety connects both processes as the consequence of hybridisation and the driving force for transfi guration.
